I really don’t want to lay into Britney Spears. I feel like there is this unacknowledged agreement in the media that we all treat her with kid gloves right now, because she’s not falling apart as badly as she was. In fact you could almost say that she’s pulling her life together. And I am nothing if not a big supporter of the underdog. I love hearing about the girl with the drug problem who ended up going to Yale. And for Britney Spears, getting to be on How I Met Your Mother TWICE is pretty much her equivalent. However to be honest, I think she got into college because of her money or her name, or maybe slept with the dean or something. Because she was not competing with the rest of the students.
Though Brit seemed to get some decent reviews for her first performance, I thought she ranged from stilted and awkward to cheesy and overdone. This time around more reviewers seemed to be honest about her performance – it was sub par at best. the writers gave her a few more lines and made her more integral to the story – definitely a big mistake. To be fair to Britney, How I Met Your Mother seems to be suffering from some strike-induced stress, because it hasn’t been quite up to par lately. If you just started watching it for the first time because of Britney, it’d be fair to think it was mediocre at best. But it actually is one of only three great sitcoms left on the air in this pathetic age of reality crapivision. The other two being the illustrious Office and 30 Rock.
Bringing Britney back onto the show reeked of a desperation that How I Met Your Mother should not have bowed to. They clearly shoehorned her in at the last minute. Several reviews noted that she and Neil Patrick Harris had absolutely no chemistry. Harris told the Associated Press that the show shouldn’t employ Britney again, and should steer away from Will & Grace-esq stunt casting. Even though he later retracted his comments (in a manner you could tell was forced), I’m sure it made things awkward between him and Britney – and the result was flat, even in Harris’ usually brilliant performance.
Overall it led to a lackluster night. Britney should stick to what she used to be good at – performing songs. She clearly knew how to put on a great show, and that’s where her fans probably want to see her. While it’s nice to try to stretch your wings a little, acting is not her forte. My cat and I gave a more convincing performance of infatuation last night when we wrestled over the last bit of a ham sandwich. Brit, we’re routing for you. Keep up the good work, do great things from here on out – just stay away from television.
Here are some clips from Brit’s performance last night.
When Britney appeared in Will and Grace (and in the movie Crossroads) I though she did quite well with her acting but here it seemed that the audience almost forced themselves to laugh, but to be fair the jokes and the writing itself was not that good.
At least Britney is trying, so good for her.
I wonder how much of her storyline was planned for the season, and how much of it was just created on the spot and shoehorned in so that she could be on the show. Neither of the episodes–overall, not just her–were as funny as regular episodes have been. HIMYM is generally a show with strong continuity, with all of the pieces fitting together over time. So my guess is that both were written much more quickly (we know the first one was, and the second only happened because the first was successful) than is typical.
I thought she was fine the first time, although not amazing, but I didn’t think last night’s episode worked at all.
with the exception of the Britney episodes, I’ve actually thought the show has been better since the strike. The pre-strike portion of the season fell far short of the first two seasons, IMO.
I agree, in a bit part “Abby” worked just fine. It’s a flat character, even without britney holding her up. You can’t have a flat character carry an episode though and I think that’s why last night everything sucked balls. Including Britney’s acting, and we all know I’ll stand by brit until the day my 12-yr-old-fangirl-self can stand no more.
Britney was awful and I actually FELT NPH’s pain in having to have her on the show. I totally respect him for coming forth with his thoughts on “promotional” guest spots. UGH.
Ugh… it was PAINFUL to watch! I kinda liked her the first time, but last night was just plain painful.
I don’t have a problem with her and Harris not having chemistry… it kinda went with the storyline.
Isn’t the point of having a guest star to boost the ratings? Did anyone really tune in just to watch Britney? I for one love this show but could barely watch last night.
I have no idea what Bays was thinking, maybe improve the writing already…the show is pretty funny without the stunt celeb casting…
yeah that was pretty cringe worthy. i mean cheers for trying and nothing against her… but… not so great.
I HATE saying this too but she looks BIGGER. It shouldn’t matter but… she does look preggers or something lol
Agree that the lack of chemistry worked in her favour. Her character is supposed to be awkward in that she doesnt get the joke, so on that level it worked. I think she did an okay job with a not-so-great script.
I just kept thinking how pregnant she looks – especially in the light blue sweater – and wondering who’s the daddy!
First of all, this show SUX big time. It’s worse than According to Jim or Two and 1/2 Men.
There are two kind of careers paths in the business: the enduring career and the big flash. Britney is the second type. She was a pop tart phenomenon for a few years, but that’s all she was meant to be. She was a shooting star, she lit up the sky and now she is all burned out.
hey, is there a section just for latest news
