Spoilers – do not read this if you’re waiting to watch the finale, which aired last night
After watching the True Blood finale I have to say there were about 15 minutes of very good material and the rest seemed like decent filler to me, as is typical for an episode this season. The major revelation, where Eric told Sookie that Bill was hired by the Queen of Louisiana to get close to her, was a welcome plot change. I’ve read the books and suspected that was coming, but you never know where Alan Ball is going to take it. Bill and Sookie needed a wrench in their relationship, and I was hoping they would break up. They did – in spectacular fashion.
The other plotlines were only a fraction as interesting. Jason saved the town of Hotshot from a DEA raid and seemed to take responsibility for helping the people there after Crystal’s crazed fiance shot their leader, her dad, in the face. Sam may or may not have shot his little brother after he stole all the money from his safe. Tara chopped her hair off and seemed to be saying goodbye to the town after she had a romp with Sam. I doubt she will be missed. She’s seen a lot and is clearly haunted by it, but the angst from her was too much. Lafayette started hallucinating, a likely after-effect of the V, and learned that his boyfriend, Jesus, is a witch.
Hoyt had an amusing run-in with his mother and his simpering ex girlfriend, who tried to stage an intervention at his job along with his high school guidance counselor. He asserted his love for Jessica and told them where to stick it. He called his mom a “mean, prejudiced old control freak” and told the counselor “You’re not even a real therapist. Everybody knows you’ve got a bottle of Malibu rum in your desk.” Hoyt and Jessica got a house together and got engaged but we were forewarned that it wouldn’t last. A baby doll lay abandoned on the floor in one of the rooms, warning us of their trouble to come.
We figured out that Sookie didn’t want anything to do with Eric or Bill when she was bargaining with a chained-up burnt-to-a-crisp Russell at Fangtasia. She was watching him during the day while the other vamps slept. Russell promised Sookie a million dollars and the option that he would kill either Bill and/or Eric if she set him free. She bargained him up to $5 million and told him she wanted both of them dead. She didn’t release Russell though, and Bill and Eric later took him to a construction site where they encased Russell in concrete and told him he’d go mad. Eric’s maker, Godrick, kept appearing to him in visions and telling him to forgive Russell, but Eric went through with it anyway.
The show was at its best and most shocking when Bill unexpectedly double-crossed Eric, throwing him into a vat of fresh concrete and stealing his phone. He then imitated Eric’s voice to call one of his minions and order him to kill Pam.
Bill rushed over to Sookie’s house to declare his undead love for her immediately afterwards. She was starting to buy his pleas when a very gray-looking Eric showed up at the door. Here’s part of their dialogue:
Bill to Sookie: “I ended Eric. He tasted you, he knows what you are. I intend to bring the true death to all that have tasted you and know what you are. Eric, Pam, the queen… I will do anything it takes to keep you safe, even if it means me not being a part of your life. This I swear to you. I have never loved, nor will I ever love, as I have loved you.”
Eric shows up at the door.
Eric: “You did tell her you were originally sent by the Queen of Louisiana to procure her because of what she might be.”
Bill to Sookie: “I did not know why she wanted you. As I grew to know you, I purposely kept you from her.”
Sookie: “Were you ever going to tell me?”
Bill: “I hoped to, someday.”
Eric: “What about you letting two psychos beat her until an inch of her life so you could feed her your blood the night you met. You think she’ll forgive you for that?”
Sookie to Bill: “Oh my God? Is it true?”
Bill: “Yes”
Eric: “He tried to silence me tonight so you would never know. He doesn’t want to protect you, he only wants to protect himself.”
Sookie to Bill: “Get out of my house. Don’t ever come here. Don’t ever call me, don’t ever talk to me. Ever. You manipulated me into falling in love with you.”
Bill: “It is who you are, Sookie, not what you are that I love. I will love always until I meet the true death.”
Sookie: “Love, you don’t even get to use that word.
“I rescind my invitation.”
Bill is propelled out the door and is sitting on the dirt outside, dazed, when Eric gives the best line ever.
Eric: “I want my phone back.”
Sookie to Eric: “You too, get the f*ck off my porch and out of my life.”
Eric: “For the record, I would never have given you to Russell.”
Sookie: “Go back to hell where you came from, you f*cking dead piece of sh*t.”
Eric: “I’m sorry to see you suffer like this. I thought you had the right to know.”
When Eric got back to Pam at Fangtasia, we learned that she killed the guy that Bill sent to kill her and then rescued Eric. Next, Bill invited the Queen of Louisiana over to his place and told her that only one of them was leaving the house. She said “You dare challenge me. I’m over twice your age?”
“Yes, but I have nothing left to lose”
Mild spoilers for future episodes
At the end of the episode, Sookie went out to the cemetery to sit at her grandmother’s grave and was visited by her fairy relatives. It was all kind of ethereal and unnecessary. I know it’s a big part of the plot to come in the book series but the whole fairy business is too much in the books, and it seems cheesy on screen. The vampires need a motivation for lusting after Sookie, though, and there it is. I’m hoping that the show follows some of the other plot points in the books, specifically a new romance for Sookie and another guy I won’t name. Most of you know who I’m talking about, though. It will be a whole 9 months before we find out. Damnit.
The last few episodes have been kind of meh. Like you said, the only exciting moment was when Bill pushed Eric into concrete vat.
After Sookie was rescued from Russell’s house it just seemed to fall flat. I really don’t care about any of the other characters’ story lines all that much except for Tara. I love her character and I want her to find happiness. Didn’t care for Sam and his little bro (we knew from the start that wasn’t going to end well), Arlene and her pregnancy, or Jason and his were panther girlfriend Crystal. I do like Hoyt and Jessica though. And I don’t really care for this fairy business… Next season they’re bringing witches into the fold (we got hints of it with Lafayette’s bf being a witch and that new waitress Holly) so maybe that will be more exciting?
The biggest question for me was why the f*ck did Eric wear a shirt ALL season????
My Sunday nights got a lot free-er, as TB,Hung and Entourage ended for the season. The only show I have left is Mad Men.
As for the TB finale, it was okay, not great. Entourage, which sucked most of the season, actually had a good finale for the season.
Looking forward to Boardwalk Empire though.
I was a bit disappointed by the finale, I guess I expected more. The first two season’s finales were way better and more intense. I still love True Blood and can’t wait for it to come back, but there were better episodes this season than this last one.
Hah, @Dorothy, I really agree. Unclothed Eric is like Top #3 reasons I watch this show. Every scene was like “Gwar! He’s wearing his FREAKING shirt again!”
This whole season was sort of “whatever” to me, I was wondering when the main arc would take hold and then bam! season finale! Of course, last night’s show opened up some cans of worms, and someone needs to kill Mrs. Fortenberry. She sucks. Tara needs to move on from eggs–I guess I am unsympathetic, but wasn’t most of their “love” determined whilst under the spell of the maenad? Enough, she barely knew the guy. And why the traumatized flashback to the crazy vamp being killed–thank goodness he was! She is too much unnecessary drama.
Honestly, how is it possible for a man to still look sexy even after he’s escaped from a giant pit of cement? Am I just too obsessed with him? Or does he really just have that much swagger?
This season started out the best of them all, but I would only give the finale a 7.5/10. Breaking up Bill & Sookie brings them closer to the books, but they’re so far off that storyline who knows what they’re going to do. I am confident, however, that there will be more naked Eric next season. I think they’re doing the fairy storyline all wrong & I think HBO coulda/woulda/shoulda sprung for something more than Halloween costumes if that is the way they want to go.
Also, CB, Crystal’s finace shot “their” dad. They’re half-siblings.
@JULIE He has that much swagger…such a pretty piece of man meat….
@Dread Pirate, I thought they were cousins? That’s why when he sad “dad” last night I was confused, because I could have sworn Crystal said they were cousins a few episodes back?!
meh
This season didn’t live up to the 1st two, but whatever, I’ll give them a pass. I’ve stopped equating the books to the series and vice versa, for me I have to look at them individually. I love Lafayette, and I’m glad that he always has an interesting story going in the series. I get bored with Bill and Sookie.
i’m f*cking SO over bill.
after he f*cked lorena i was over him.
PLUS! the fact that he allowed the rattrays to be the sh*t out of sookie like that!!!
unforgivable. 🙁
alcide!
you’re up!
To many writers have made the last 2 seasons of what could be a GREAT series,a convoluted mess. The series is based on the book series but has veered off in so many directions it is almost impossible to make sense of it. Case in point, Arlene is pregnant with a Renee’s baby? What is Bon Temps in a time warp too?
@fc2010 – the ENTIRE series has taken course over only like 3 months (at the most). It could only be Rene’s baby. The timeline makes perfect sense.
Personally, I thought Eric’s best line was (to Bill and Alcide, who were glaring at each other): “Well if you 2 are finished eye f-cking each other, can we go?”
I laughed so hard when he said that.
Yeah this season was just kinda meh, nothing really happened. I really hope that was the last we’re going to see of Tara for a while, I cant stand her! And yes, the whole fairy thing was incredibly cheesy
Even though I always watch it, that show really bores the crap out me. I spend half my time fast forwarding through the gay stuff and that overacting black girl with the quivering lips in every scene…. It’s just boring endless shots of 2 or 3 people talking to each other all the time. There’s more action in an old episode of Star Trek than this show.
I enjoyed the finale but was kind of undertwhelmed, generally speaking. There wasn’t enough Pam – and I love me some Pam.
FKT, I’m almost positive she said she didn’t want to marry her half-brother.
@Sophie, I laughed at that too.
I also laughed at the intervention for Hoyt. “What consequences?” “You won’t be welcome in my home.” “I left.” And then when the guidance councellor tries to get in on the hug and Mama Hoyt pushes him.
Otherwise, that episode SUCKED HARD. The whole season sucked. Why must there be so many storylines? And these are HBO writers, do they not know how to write a decent episode, let alone a season finale. The one moment of drama was Bill pushing Eric and putting a hit on Pam. And that drama lasted what? Two minutes?
And Sookie didn’t take long to cave. Bill shows up and boom, the welcome offer came pretty quick.
As for the scene with Bill and Sophie-Anne about to fight, good God, that was pure fromage.
As for Jason. Really? So waiting for marriage is what’s stopping her cousin/brother from breeding with her? Because inbred, crystal meth dealing were-panthers are traditional, is that it? And is Jason now Uncle Daddy Jason? Last night, they made me hate the Jason characters.
As for Tara, shoot her. At least she cut off that nasty weave. And why did she go to her mother’s? It was such an unecessary scene.
Ugh, the whole thing was awful. When Eric and Bill were standing over the about to be incased Russel, Bill’s accent was back but then he stumbled over a line.
At least Pam didn’t die.
1) Alan Ball needs to fire about half of the writing staff. There were WAY too many crappy episodes this season (and I’m counting 80% last night)
2) The Fairy stuff in the books is much better (ie: non-cheesy), I don’t understand why they had to screw with that part.
3) I really like Tara, but I don’t think the writers have any idea what to do with her character (see #1). She is so different from the books, & while I like that aspect of the show, something has to be done.
I have more, but I can’t remember them all… ;P
@spooge “the black girl’s” name is Tara by the way. Which you should know if you watch the show all the time. Which makes me believe you were trying to be obnoxious with that remark. Also, if you have to fast forward past all the “gay scenes”, perhaps you should find a show that doesn’t offend your delicate sensibilities by “gasp” featuring gay people.
The finale sucked. Hard. This entire season, with the exception of the Russell storyline, and the presence of Eric and Pam, was a disaster. The fact that Alan Ball wrote the finale says all you need to know about what a mess his show has become. I think It may be time to break up with the Vamps of TB. Oh well, at least I still have Mad Men which is having it’s best season ever to watch on Sundays! And unlike Alan Ball, Matthew Weiner is a genius who can write the hell out of an episode. Adios Bloodsuckers. It was real.
@Julie: It’s possible that you’re too obsessed but in that case, you’re not alone 😀
season three was a total drag. they better pick it up 10 notches next year or else they will be down viewers.eric needs to grow his hair back long… that’s all i’m sayin.
@julie, in season 3 sookie states her gran was murdered 6 mos ago, so exactly how does this time line make sense? To many different writers…
I hope its Alacide…he’s definitely grown on me…yum yum.
I hate sookie. whew, that feels good to let it out. I find her character so tedious. I was disappointed by this season overall.
I’m convinced that Alan Ball hates Tara, because every terrible thing that can happen to a character has happened to her. WTF? I mean taking away that fine-as-all-get-out-eggs was enough to make a girl want to kill herself.
And unlike spooge, I feel like there isn’t enough ‘gay’ stuff. The hetero sex scenes are so graphic (i feel like we have all but given sookie a pap smear), but then the gay sex scenes are g-rated. What’s that about? As a straight woman, I demand more man on man action!
Tara scenes are the best,I’m glad she’s changing that hairstyle. The chick can seriously act.Sookie and Bill need to break up to bring back some excitement.I like Jason,Sam and the rest of the cast, too.I was hoping Tara and Sam would be a couple.I know “Mr Alan Ball” better not kill off “Tara”,all my friends watch this show because it’s so diverse, not many vamp movies are willing to bring this type of cast to life! so, keep “Tara” and her funny azz cousin- Lafayette.Jesus is so HOT,keep him too.Great show. Can’t wait until next yr!
Oh and I like to see Tara and Sookie spend more time together, their friendship seems to be over! the best sex scene this yr … Bill fycking Lorena, when he turned her head all the way around, stating he will never love her, priceless!
Well, CB, if they even mention this unnamed love interest’s pansy purple eyes, my friend Meg may just stop watching the show!
And I agree, the phone line was awesome. My God that man has swagger. Even covered in cement! He and Pam are just amazing with their delivery and dialogue.
The entire season was a waste of time with dull plots and storylines. Eric’s backstory was the only interesting thing all season. I also do not like Anna Paquin as Sookie.
Julie — About Eric … He DOES have that much swagger; Alcide is running a close second. I am just so grateful they didn’t kill off my viking.
@ WTF & tuan: I agree about Sookie! She’s only a slightly annoying character in the books, but portrayed by Anna Paquin she graduates to nails on a chalkboard, IMO. Too bad they can’t re-cast that part, but it’s too late now.
I loved the first 2 seasons, but my interest in this season petered out after episode 8. Haven’t watched it since then. I’ve been reading the recaps, so I know what’s been going on, and that’s enough for me. It varied between being a snoozefest of boredom or there were so many storylines going on it was just too much to follow. In short, this season was a mess. Hope Season 4 is better!
This show can get as outrageous as it wants to get … I’m an addict. Just don’t kill off my viking man.
I like what they did to Bill’s hair (blood red highlights). He’s not so drab looking.
I think I might be in the minority here, but I love TB’s Russell Edgington’s character. He had some great lines this season. He and Eric lying in the parking lot, sizzling like bacon, Eric all intense and dramatic, while Russell was just irritated and argumentative – I found it very funny. I hope we haven’t seen the last of him. Of course, if Eric escaped, we can assume Russell can, too.
Weirdest/most out of character part of the finale: Sookie putting Talbot’s goo down the garbage disposal and laughing maniacally. Who is that woman, ’cause its not Sookie! (Although the scene where Ginger is drying off the container and putting it back on the bar like its business as usual was pretty funny)
I love the Charlaine Harris books so much and I love the Sookie Stackhouse character. I think Alan Ball has done a nice job bringing it to television I just wish that he would have followed the books a little bit more closely. I HATED that he made the MaryAnn character so large last season. She was SO irritating and in the books it was relatively small. I thought this season was pretty good. I was SOOO happy with the Alcide casting choice, I can’t stop daydreaming about that man. I think that since Alan Ball is going to continue to not follow the books so closely Sookie and Alcide should be together, in the books unfortunately they never get together. Or, if he does want to follow the books, Bring QUINN in, the were tiger. He’s a wonderful character too! Which is who I think CB was referring to.
I think the show is so fun and I look forward to when it’s airing and when the new season starts.
Moops, I agree with you about Sookie, she always tries to do the “good Christian thing to do” in the books and on the show she’s a sweet girl, so it was SUPER out of character when she took enjoyment from Russell’s pain.
Anyway next season there should be more Sookie, more Alcide(shirtless), more Eric (shirtless too or in any type of v-neck sweater). I can’t wait for the witches and Amelia! One thing I hope Alan Ball does, is to please stop making Sam Merlotte into a messed up character. If Alan Ball wants to follow the books a little more closely I would really enjoy that, but either way, I equally love True Blood and the Sookie Stackhouse novels.
I’m sort of 50/50 on the finale, which is how I was on the show all season – some really great stuff (Russell) mixed with drab and boring (Hot Shot).
I feel like we’ve done the “you’ve betrayed me!” “but I love you” break up with Sookie and Bill so many times. If she gets back together w/ him 5 minutes into season 4, as she’s done every other time they fight, I’ll be pissed!
I like how they got rid of Russell, Bill double crossing Eric, and Eric and Pam getting out of it.
Sam’s situation, and Tara leaving, were good set ups for next season, but I found the other cliffhangers a bit of a let down. The fairy stuff is cheesy on the show, as was Bill and Sophie’s Matrix fight positions or whatever the hell that was. The Hot Shot stuff was bad all season, and ended poorly too. So what, is Jason now going to be Mayor of Toothless Town? Yuck.
Sookie is an extremely frustrating character. I like her when she’s sassy and not buying everyone’s crap, but most of the time she’s stupid, reckless, and annoying.
I’m hoping next season is a little more consistent, this year was very uneven.
Is it me or did this season seem really short?
That wasn’t the greatest finale ever made, and it’s annoying to me that many of the after-show things gave away surprises to come. Some of us still like being surprised when we watch something.
Cool recap. 🙂
Can’t wait to rent season 3. I don’t know why Ball doesn’t stick to the books. The books are crazy enough without all of the silly plotlines the show’s writers make up…
I really liked crispy fried Eric and Russell in the opening, that was funny. I miss the quick wit of Lala I hope they bring that back as well as Jason’s intelligence. He seems to have gotten dumber this season.
This series has become so boring and ridiculous.
Lets watch Tara lip quiver every episode…tell that woman to get some range of emotion.
Will these vampires ever actually do some fighting? Wasted a whole finale with no fighting. You can’t count that last scene, that was some lame mid-air cat pounce which I feel has little strategic significance. (unless he’s powering up….)
Who CARES about Tara’s crazy mom. End that story already.
Jason needs to be killed or at least maneuvered into crazy sex scenes. Why? He’s not getting smarter and he’s not accomplishing anything, at least make him entertaining.
Eric didn’t even smack Bill around for trying to encase him in concrete, explain that one to me.
This season was by far the worst, I may attempt to view the next one in hopes they actually start writing something other than dialogue.
I LOVED season 3, I thought it was the best by far. Russell’s line to Eric, ‘Would you just hurry up and fucking die already?’ Classic.
The phone. Hilarious.
I hated the whole Jason plot-line though. BUt man he is HOT
The main thing I dislike about True Blood is that they keep taking great characters from the books and making them d@mned annoying on the show. I love them for Lafayette and Jason, though.
And whoever was worried about Eric being killed off? Don’t. He’s more popular than Bill & Sookie, and in the books, she ends up with Eric after the 4th or 5th book. 10 books in they’re still together.
I finally watched the last episode I am OK because they didn’t kill Eric but mehhh is all I have to say
