Michael C. Hall talks candidly about cancer, life & the new season of Dexter

I am a huge fan of Michael C. Hall. I was a little late coming to the Dexter party, but now that I watch it (on DVD), I totally get why people are so in love with him. To play a serial killer with such compassion, heart, humor and dare I say… likeability… well, he’s an amazing actor. Early this year, Hall announced that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He went through chemo and was almost immediately given a clean bill of health – apparently, they caught it very early. Since then, Hall’s fellow actors and his legion of fans have come out to sing his praises, and Hall has meanwhile kept his head down and done his work, almost as if he didn’t want the attention. This is the first major interview I’ve seen from Hall since his diagnosis. He’s given other interviews, obviously, but none this comprehensive, or this candid. I just love this guy so much. The full NYT piece is here, but I’m putting the full piece in – it’s so good!

MICHAEL C. HALL plays a character who has, by his own count, murdered more than 60 people. He has also done battle, in a kind of Ultimate Serial Killing Championship, with a succession of bloodthirsty adversaries, one of whom turned out to be his own brother. So when Mr. Hall announced in January that he was undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma — shortly before accepting trophies in January at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild award ceremonies wearing a knit cap on his bald head — it was hard not to feel a shiver at the coincidence: the star of the Showtime series “Dexter,” the most death-obsessed show on television, contracting a potentially fatal disease at 38.

For Mr. Hall, though, any resonance between television and real life was trivial. There was another parallel that struck much closer to home: his father’s death from prostate cancer at 39.

“I think I’ve been preoccupied since I was 11, and my father died, with the idea of the age 39: Would I live that long? What would that be like?” Mr. Hall said last month, over breakfast at a restaurant off Los Feliz Boulevard. “To discover that I had the Hodgkin’s was alarming, but at the same time I felt kind of bemused, like: Wow. Huh. How interesting.”

Mr. Hall received his diagnosis while Season 4 of “Dexter” was still being shot, and his calm, studied approach included keeping his condition a secret on the set until production had wrapped. He began treatment the next day, and the cancer is now in remission. (He turned 39 in February.) Production on Season 5 was in full swing when we spoke; his illness had caused no changes in the “Dexter” schedule, and he had even managed to shoot a movie, “East Fifth Bliss,” in the East Village during the show’s hiatus. His hair had grown back, and the only possible sign of concern for health was his breakfast order: a lonely cup of chamomile tea.

If anything, he said, he felt an extra energy after the effects of the chemotherapy wore off. That could come in handy in the new season, which begins next Sunday night. Dexter Morgan, police forensics expert by day and avenging-angel serial killer by night, will be going through some big changes. As dedicated viewers know (spoiler alert here if you’re still catching up with the show on DVD), Season 4 ended with the shocking murder of Dexter’s wife, Rita (Julie Benz), by a fellow serial killer. As Season 5 begins, his usual burdens of secrecy, guilt and uncontrollable homicidal urges are supplemented by single fatherhood and being a suspect in his wife’s death.

“Obviously the fourth season recalibrated everything,” Mr. Hall said. “Everything we’d seen him build up is now gone. It was sad to see Julie Benz go and leave the ‘Dexter’ family, but from an acting standpoint, creatively, it’s really been invigorating to have him so completely decimated.”

In addition to Mr. Hall’s tightrope-walking portrayal of a sympathetic killer, one that has earned him three consecutive Emmy nominations, “Dexter” has been marked by a series of flashy, season-long guest-killer performances by actors like Jimmy Smits and, last season, John Lithgow, roles collectively known on the set as the “big bad.” But that too is in for a change.

“I think as far as the emergence of the adversary, the big bad if you will, that form may have been perfected last season,” Mr. Hall said, “I think there was a desire to move beyond, to break that mold.”

The biggest name joining the cast this season is the actress Julia Stiles, and while not much has been revealed about her character, it appears that she won’t be a thoroughgoing killer in the mold of Mr. Lithgow’s Trinity or Christian Camargo’s Rudy, Dexter’s seriously disturbed older brother.

“There will certainly be adversaries, but it’s more plural and as far as Julia’s role, it’s not an adversarial relationship,” Mr. Hall said. “You know, Dexter’s yet to get involved in any significant way with someone he hasn’t ended up killing, so we’ll see if he can manage.”

The one successful, essential relationship Dexter has is with his bull-headed and passionate foster sister, Debra. In this case the parallel between television and real life can’t be denied: Debra is played by Jennifer Carpenter, who married Mr. Hall after they finished shooting Season 3. Ms. Carpenter, who appears as high-strung and vulnerable in person as Mr. Hall seems measured and guarded, recalled during a break in filming at the “Dexter” soundstage in Hollywood that she cried for a couple of days after the cancer diagnosis arrived, one year into their marriage. Then she began to take her cues from how he handled it himself.

“The triumph of a man, to have gone through something like that and not even give the crew any suspicions that he was in any sort of need, it’s impressive,” she said. “And I’m not sure he ever would have told anyone about it had he not been expected at those award ceremonies.”

With five seasons as the bottled-up funeral director David Fisher on the HBO series “Six Feet Under” and now another five as the secret killer Dexter Morgan, Mr. Hall is aware that he has spent a decade, and built a career, playing men with an almost comical degree of repression.

“Yes, I think simulating that kind of repression day in day out for a decade probably has its effect,” he said. “At the same time the fact that I’ve been called upon to play these characters is probably not a complete coincidence, so I have my own repressed people in my life that I’ve drawn on, and had my own tendency toward repression. Maybe it has to do with not knowing quite what to do with the storm of feelings that accompanied my father’s death. Maybe it’s a learned behavior.” He smiled. “Now I’m taking it to the bank.”

How long he’ll continue taking it to the bank is, he acknowledges, a good question. He said the writers have done a good job of maintaining the “fundamental disconnect, or wacky justification” necessary to pull off a show in which the sympathetic protagonist has to murder people continually to keep the plot going (even if those people, by Dexter’s reckoning, deserve to die). But time will run out, perhaps sooner rather than later.

“We finished the first season, and I thought we should just stop,” Mr. Hall said. “It’s sort of beyond the beyond as far as the landscape of Dexter’s life now.”

Chip Johannessen (“24”), who joined “Dexter” as this season’s show runner, pointed to two things that continue to close in on the writers: the growing likelihood that Debra, a crack police detective, will discover her brother’s secret life, and Dexter’s gradual normalization, his progress toward “some recognizable human place.”

When either happens, the show will be over. “I think it’s going to be up to Michael,” Mr. Johannessen said.

Mr. Hall, who is an executive producer of the show, will also have a say in the nature of Dexter’s fate. “With the way the fourth season ended, the suggestion seems to be that there are consequences. And it’s hard to imagine it ultimately ending well for him.”

It’s hard to imagine that even the show’s most hard-core fans could protest too much if Dexter’s fate were a grim one, in keeping with the punishments he has handed out himself. In the meantime Mr. Hall continues to see how human he can make a character who doesn’t believe in his own humanity.

“When I first encountered the character, my first question was: Is this a person who could ever be? Really?” Mr. Hall said. “And I’m still not sure. I think I’m coming closer and closer to believing that he’s real. And I think Dexter’s coming closer and closer to believing that he’s real too.”

[From The New York Times]

I heard that in the new season, Deb moves in with Dexter to help him take care of the kids. I hope that happens, because Deb has become my favorite character, and I love her evolution, and I love the way she and Dexter feel about each other. Her radar with men and with people in general is so screwed up – and I blame Dexter for that. The person she’s closest to, the person she trusts the most is a serial killer. It’s f-cked her up in ways she doesn’t even know. Plus, I can’t wait to see how Angel and the chief’s lieutenant’s marriage plays out. Ah… f-ck, I love this show!

  1. Super Sleuth says:

Great show, great cast. I love Michael C. Hall!

  2. LittleFATMe says:

Oh, Kaiser, isn’t he awesome! I fell in love with him as David on Six Feet Under. When we watched Dexter I was glad he was there, but worried I wouldn’t be able to remove him from the David role – not to worry, he blew me away!

  3. california angel says:

It is such a good show! The visuals and cinematography are stunning. I also really think he shined in Six Feet Under.

  4. Jen says:

    Top-notch guy, there.

  5. gillie says:

LaGuerta is their lieutant, not the chief.
i have a sneaking suspicion that Quinn and Deb are gonna get together this season

  6. lena says:

Kaiser…do you watch Spartacus…the lead on that show Andy Whitfield who is gorgeous by the way, was diagnosed with Hodgkins if I’m not mistaken, then given the clear, and now has it again. The 2nd season will continue with a prequel, but after that the show may be in limbo while Andy is recovering. I’m only asking because Michael and Andy sort of share similar stories.

  7. Eleonor says:

Love the show, I was sad when Rita died. I whish him all the best, he seems a nice person.

  8. Kaiser says:

No, I don’t watch Spartacus, so I really didn’t know how that guy was. I feel for him, though.

  9. Iggles says:

Michael C Hall is amazing. I didn’t catch season 4 of Dexter (I switched back to HBO; Won’t get two premiums at once).

I have to say, I’m reluctant to watch. I liked Dexter and Rita together! Loved their wedding and I’m pissed that she’s been kidding off 🙁

  10. TaylorB says:

I REALLY HATE the cable company, I am pretty sure every time I attempt to navigate their phone maze aka. ‘F*ck you customer’ system I develop a rash and a tic. However whenever Dexter is on I pick up SHO until it is over for the season.

  11. jen says:

I’m in countdown mode for the new season. I never get this excited about a show, but this show it absolutely top notch. And MCH is definitely a world class actor. I saw him at TIFF – very briefly, but I saw him – and I was damn near giddy LOL

BTW this:I heard that in the new season, Deb moves in with Dexter to help him take care of the kids.

That’s what I was thinking would happen.

    CANNOT WAIT!!!

  12. jen says:

@ Iggles – you HAVE to watch season 4! Watching two amazing actors like MCH and John Lithgow go head to head….SO GOOD 😀

  13. lena says:

@ Kaiser…well if you like over the top CGI blood and pretty bad acting you’ll enjoy the slow. Plus the men are half naked and after the 1st 3 episodes the plot gets pretty good…it’s on the violent/gory side though.

  14. TaylorB says:

#13 (sorry my ‘puter sucks and I can’t read your name)

I agree, season #4 with Trinity was amazing. Lithgow was perfect as Trinity, not sure if he got any but he deserved awards for that. And Hall was brilliant as well.

  15. jen says:

TaylorB – he got an Emmy for it! I think MCH got one at the same time, too 🙂

  16. liz says:

Lithgow got a vast amount of acclaim and awards. It was ultimately shocking and sad that Rita died, especially in the way that she did but I’ll admit I found her character abrasive and annoying. I think Deb and Quinn will experiment together a little. Julia Stiles? Looking forward to what she might do with this role.

    Excited!

  17. TxGal says:

Dexter is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Before the series came out I had read 1 or 2 books of the Dexter series. I almost didn’t but my husband convince me to read it. Since than I have not stop reading the books. Even though the series does not really follow the books I still enjoy watching Dexter.

The Trinity season was one of the best especially with John Lithgow in it.

  18. Katyusha says:

Am I the only one who thought Rita was a nagging, manipulative b*tch? When she died, I was happy for Dexter.

I saw the comment earlier when someone said they liked Rita and Dexter together – seriously??
If I was married to that lady (the character), I’d kill myself.

  19. Iggles says:

Katyusha – What can I say? I love Julie Benz. She was awesome as Darla on Angel/Buffy.

And I cheered when Dexter dumped Lila and went back to Rita! The wedding/baby was awesome. I don’t think she was annoying. She’s thinking she’s married to a regular dude, not a sociopathic killer (even if he is lovable).

jen – Hmm. I am intrigued. Loved the season with Jimmy Smits and so I was sad I missed #4 when it premiered. I’m not looking forward to Rita dying, but I’ll guess I’ll woman up and watch it sometime soon.

  20. Katie says:

He is an amazing actor. Seeing him on Six Feet Under and then in this role…his whole physicality is different. It’s quite impressive. He is also very well spoken in real life and gives off the impression that he is smart, likable, greatful, and not totally obsessed with fame or himself. LOVE HIM.

  21. asiont says:

love him and the show, it’s my favourite tv serie so far

  22. Katyusha says:

    @ Iggles

Oh man, Lila was a different story…

Don’t get me wrong, I love Julie Benz, but her character on that show – all she does is nag!! And I’m not sure how many people pick up on it, but her character is extremely manipulative. Sometimes you could tell Dexter tired of her, too.

  23. PrimeO says:

    I LOVE Julia Stiles!!
I’m so excited to hear she’s on Dexter.
She’s been great in her small but pivotal role in the Bourne series…
    glad she’s getting more opportunities.

  24. TQB says:

Dexter was the first thing I added to my shiny new Netflix queue. Loved Hall in Six Feet Under and can’t wait to get into Dexter. He is delightful. If anyone can make me care about a killer…

  25. connie says:

everyone i watched dexter with was glad to see rita go! after the marriage she definately become annoying and a nag. no wonder men dont want to get married!

  26. I Choose Me says:

Love Michael C Hall. So glad he’s doing okay and I can’t wait for the Dexter season premiere.

I like Julie Benz, loved her as Darla on Buffy/Angel but I disliked her character Rita and can’t say I’m too sorry that she’s gone.

Lithgow was phenomenal as Trinity and Jennifer Carpenter gave some stellar performances as Deb last season.

  27. serena says:

I hope he recovers completely. Dexter is becoming my favourite show too.

  28. tooey says:

We re-watched Season 4 of Dexter as it repeated on Showtime. I can’t believe how tense and edgy it was even knowing how everything ends! That’s a great show! I fell in love with MCH as David in Six Feet Under; watching his gay character struggle with faith and religion that seemed to reject him at every turn was incredible. I think one of the most fully realized gay characters ever portrayed on tv. Or movies.

  29. Jules says:

I looooovveeee DEXTER!!! If you aren’t watching it, you should rent the past seasons. My husband was disturbed that Rita got killed off, but I didn’t care. I was always irritated when she’d call him for the 40th time and he was stalking someone, and I’d be like–bitch, leave him alone and get the baby’s medicine yourself! Can’t you see he’s busy trying to kill someone!!!

  30. Bee says:

@Iggles I loved the Rita character too. People complained that she nagged Dexter. But, how else was she supposed to act? Her husband constantly disappeard, kept secrets from her (like him being a serial killer), and had a secret appartment. She was just acting like any WIFE would in that situation.

  31. Isa says:

I am only on the second season, but I love Dexter! My husband even loves it and he’s not big on television shows. Michael C Hall is great. The only person that got on my nerves was Lila. I think she is butt ugly and doesn’t wear enough clothing.
Rita gets on my nerves a little too. I know they are trying to make her seem stronger but the writers or maybe the actress didn’t do a good job. I do like how they let her get prettier. In the first season her hair was always so limp and greasy looking. Now it’s pretty and clean.

  32. Dee Vine says:

Love Dexter. Love Deb. Can’t wait for the new season! @#31: Agreed Rita acted like a normal wife would, esp if your husband often “worked late” into the night and you were left at home with 2 kids and a screaming baby.

  33. di butler says:

Probably the best show on television. Hall rocked it on SFU, now he blows this away. I love Julie Benz, but I was getting tired of her character, so this might turn out for the good. Her kids creep me out, too. I don’t know if any of you read the books, but in them both of the kids are budding serial killers, too. I can definately see that weird Cody kid carving someone up.

  34. Katyusha says:

Rita was nagging well before the baby and secret apartment came along.

    Just sayin’.

  35. sad says:

The baby is the cutest ever! I hated the season ending, I almost wish it was a dream.

  36. Bee says:

@Dee Vine like you said Rita was just acting like a normal wife. I think the people who complained about Rita were just annoyed that she interrupted Dexter’s serial killing. I mean how dare she bother Dexter when he’s trying to murder someone. Clearly she deserved to die. Not.

  37. Andrea-2 says:

    @Lena and @Kaiser
Actually, the actor from Spartacus has “NON-Hodgkin’s lymphoma” which is more deadly. Hodgkin’s is pretty treatable.

  38. kelly says:

Isn’t it great to hear someone actually being modest, thoughtful, privately-minded, considerate- christ, it’s like a beautiful dream! Compare this interview with all the other self-massaging, neurotic drivel that pours out of the standard celebrity’s mouth.
    I WUV him too.
    Hope he makes more movies.

As for the Rita thing, it’s not that I wanted her dead (well thats a bit of a lie, I sort of did) but you have to admit she was a glaring writing failure; drab, repetitive, clichéd. She just didn’t make the cut next to the other characters and deserved to go. I wasn’t crazy about how she was played by whatshername either with all the breathiness. Like nails on a blackboard.

  39. teehache says:

rita and that screaming baby made me stop watching. i already can’t stand kids and passive aggressive, annoying women like the rita character. i just don’t want to watch a show with a screaming baby. it was good until he got with her and then that screaming baby. too bad.
