Madonna is trying so hard to be as cool as her daughter Lola

For yesterday’s appearance in NYC on behalf of Macy’s Material Girl line, it seems that Madonna allowed her daughter Lola to do press. While Madge stood right beside her. And Lola couldn’t get enough of it, talking and expressing her 13 year old opinions, which of course, she thinks are epic and important and, like, no one has ever thought this way before. I mean, we were all like that. But we weren’t all talking to the press at that age. Anyway, I just thought I’d give you some of the gems from Madge and Lola’s magical red carpet appearance – note this: Madge actually talks about how Lola can’t do anything fun, like dye her hair or go out with boys. Mah-OOOOM!!!!!

She may have been wild in her younger years, but now, Madonna is a no-nonsense mother of four — with super-strict guidelines for her eldest daughter, 13-year-old Lourdes “Lola” Leon.

The Material Mom exclusively tells In Touch that Lola can’t dye her raven locks until she’s 14 — and that dating is out of the question for the high school freshman. “No!” Lola answered when asked if she has boyfriends — as Madonna shook her head and grimaced in disgust — at the launch of their juniors clothing line, Material Girl, at Macy’s in New York.

Despite the rules, the mother/daughter pair is close, even holding hands as they posed on the pink carpet at the event.

“I think she’s doing a really good job!” Lola told In Touch when asked about her mother’s parenting skills. Madonna admitted that raising a down-to-earth daughter in the public eye isn’t easy.

“It does require a lot of time and effort and paying attention,” she told In Touch.

Madonna’s first born doesn’t have any blonde ambitions! At Wednesday’s Material Girl Collection launch at Macy’s in NYC, Lourdes Leon Ciccone told UsMagazine.com that she’s “allowed” to start dyeing her hair when she turns 14 next month — but the natural brunette’s not interested in her mother’s most famous hue.

“I wouldn’t go blonde,” Lourdes told reporters. “I’d like to do a darker color — a really dark, dark red.”

Although she’s granted Lourdes permission, Madonna, 52, isn’t thrilled about her eldest’s upcoming experiments with hair color. “Once you start dyeing your hair that’s it,” the singer (who should know!) said. “You have to keep dyeing it.”

Another milestone for Lourdes: She just started attending New York’s LaGuardia High School. “I love it!” Lourdes told Us. “It’s amazing!”\

The famous mom and daughter collaborated on the Material Girl line. “She has a very good sense of what works and what doesn’t,” Madonna said. “She has really great sense of style. She pretty much ran all of the meetings while I was doing other things!”

“Lola did most of the work. I just kind of hung out in the background and went, ‘That’s nice,’ but she pretty much did all of the work. I was just overseeing it,” she said.

“There are some definite pieces [inspired by my mom]. The tulle skirt because that’s like her thing—she made that. The necklaces, the gloves, the lace tights, the combat boots…that tough girly thing,” Lourdes told PEOPLE.

As for the items in Mom’s closet that she covets most? “All of her shoes are ridiculous! I love to try on her [Christian] Louboutins,” she said.

Also on hand for the celebration was Material Girl face Taylor Momsen. “It was such an honor to be chosen by Madonna and Lola. They’re such talented people and I’m just ecstatic,” gushed the Gossip Girl star. The night concluded with the three ladies gathering on the fourth floor of Macy’s, as dancers performed and a DJ spun many of Madonna’s songs.

“Lola has been so inspiring and it’s been so great to watch her focus, her determination.” Madonna said. “I’ve achieved many things in my life, but I have to say watching my daughter make her dreams come true and achieve her goals is more exciting than anything I’ve ever done.”

[From People, Us Weekly and In Touch Weekly]

Aw… Madonna and Lola actually seem really sweet together. Like they’re really tight and Madonna is strict but she wants Lola to be herself and find herself. Don’t believe me? Watch this video of the two of them:

View more news videos at: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/video.

Lola seems WAY, like, totally OLD-er than her, like, 13 years or, like, whatever, but she still, like, talks like a kid, you know? But they’re adorable together. Of course part of it is that Madge still thinks she’s Lola’s age. But the other part of it is that she doesn’t want to embarrass Lola in any way, and she’s trying so hard to be cool for her daughter. There’s a lot of analyze, so just enjoy.

Since when is Madonna an old frogie? Madonna is forever and always will be the epitome of cool, badass, and awesome. Bow down bitches. I mean Madonna CREATED the line her daughter is selling way before the girl was even born. Sure its updated, has a dash of goth and rock thrown in but its still Madonna who started it all. I still think Madonna is cool and I don’t think she is trying to be like her kid. Her kid better recognize where cool came from.

  2. hstl1 says:

Lola looks like Charlotte Gainsbourg and she definitely has that vibe.

  3. Trillion says:

My God, Lola is beautiful. Hadn’t noticed a Charlotte Gainsbourg vibe, but you’d have a hard time finding a cooler woman to be compared to!

  4. Eleonor says:

Madonna is trying to give her daughter some rules, that’s not a bad idea. At sixteen I wanted to do my hair BLU, my mother went crazy about it. I did it when I turned eighteen.

  5. iammaya says:

Sorry, but there ain’t nothin’ cool about a 50+ year old chick, with a face botox’d into a catlike grimace wearing outfits from the junior’s department. The word that comes to mind is pathetic. Seriously, how hard would you be laughin’ if you saw this walking toward you and her name wasn’t Madonna.

  6. annaloo says:

    Oh.. I don’t think so…

That little girl grew up beautiful, full of joy and excitement, OMGOMGOMGOMG seems like a normal hyper teenage girl. And Madonna seems genuinely happy and proud. I don’t care what she’s dressed as.. people have always talked about her appearance.

And I don’t think comparisons say anything about them — they seem tight knit. Sure it’s hard to see where the line of mother and daughter is (as far as interests go).. but no hate on Madonna here.

Lourdes is evidence she did something right in this world.

  7. Whatever says:

I think pathetic is a good description of this mess. She needs to realize she is in her 50s now. There’s nothing as gross and embarrassing as older women dressing like they are 18 and trying to act like teens.

  8. Katie says:

    Lola has beautiful eyes.

I do think it’s kind of amusing to hear Madonna talk about pride at seeing Lola accomplish her dreams. The truth is, she is able to do what she’s doing because she’s Madonna’s daughter. I’m not saying she isn’t talented, I’m just saying she most likely wouldn’t have a line if she weren’t famous for being Madonna’s kid.

  9. OtherChris says:

iammaya, I agree. She doesn’t have to look dowdy but right now she just looks desparate.

  10. Eileen says:

I’m torn between wanting to stick up for my childhood idol and bashing her bigtime! I don’t think she’s OLD, but too old to be wearing hip hop tracksuits, dating babies and living vicariously through their daughters. I think she’s doing a bang up job with her kids, but I’d love to see her dressing more age appropriate, quitting the plastic surgery and toning it down some.

  11. PsychicEyes says:

Okay, Madonna is strict with her daughter but has no problem in sexualizing ours for a HUGE profit. Her daughter is the “designer” of this clothing line — bull$#@!. Children are OUR future and parents need to be cognizant of the deterimental affects this will have on their young kids. Cool is being smart and balanced and not anorexic, coked out, screwed up and having no clue about anything but botox, diet pills and getting laid. It’s not about wearing grown-up corsets with garter belts and projecting an image of a drugged out lemure, either. Parents really need to take a hard stand against the sexualization of their precious children; they are OUR future.

  12. Amanda says:

I saw this line in Macy’s yesterday! I actually didn’t realize it was Madonna’s line until I got home and saw that Madonna and Lola were doing a bunch of Material Girl press and then I put 2 and 2 together and realized that the “Material Girl” brand of clothes I had seen in Macy’s was theirs. It really is crap. It’s crammed into the teenybopper section and looks like it belongs in K-Mart. Then again, I’m 33 and had no business being in the juniors section, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about.

  13. Budda DeCat says:

I think they are both trying hard to be cool, which is the opposite of cool.

I have to giggle at Madge’s “pride” in seeing her daughter “realize her dreams” like she had to work to get the deal with Macy’s and it wasn’t handed to her on a silver platter. (rolls eyes)

  14. RHONYC says:

    like…OH-MAH-GAWD!!! 🙂

i was like, totally thinking that, like lola would, like have a like, european accent, since she grew up mainly in like, europe!

such a nice surprise that she is like, tot-a-lly VALLEY-GIRL!

    and that’s so 80’s cool. 🙂

lola is exactly what madge always wanted to be …

    a totally-awesome, stylish latina valley-girl!

    like, totally. 🙂

  15. liz says:

I agree with “LOVE” – Madonna made and created what this and many generations call “cool” and innovative. Regardless of whether the designs are innovative or just really bad, M’s influence in pop culture cannot be questioned or undermined. Lola has to know this or will when she’s older.

  16. spinner says:

Don’t you mean Lourdes is trying to be as cool as her Mother. If it was not for her Mother, Lourdes would not be living this life of entitlement. Her Mom paved the way for her. I hate it when children are elevated above their Mothers just because the Mother had the great misfortune of getting old?? We glorify youth way too much which creates many problems for people as they age.

  17. wunderkindt says:

    Madonna worked, Lola inherited.

  18. BReed says:

Why is it that so many celebrities have fashion lines? Do they think they have great taste? Need the money? I think it is ridiculous and would not buy any of these “lines”.
Lourdes seems an attractive, smart kid and certainly has every advantage $$ can buy. What’s wrong with keeping her out of the spotlight, focused on school and education for the next few years?
    I find this very sad.

  19. Chris says:

Madona’s getting older? How dare she.

  20. Alania says:

Madonna looks like an older woman trying to stay relevant by dressing and styling herself like a 20 something. Kind of pathetic, in my opinion.

  21. lucy2 says:

They do seem close, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised that she has some rules and doesn’t let her kids run wild. At least not that we can see.

But agree that in reality, it should be “It’s exciting to watch my daughter enjoy the thing that was handed to her because of who I am.”

    Ouch, her face looks painful.

  22. Po says:

You know, Im curious what Madonna who is a self-made woman thinks of her daughter basically being handed everything. I’m not an idiot and I understand that there are a lot of people who inherit businesses and money so they get a leg up, but this is a bit extreme if you ask me. She is 13. She has been on this earth for 13 years people. I’m sorry but I am just amazed.

  23. danielle says:

It’s a little cute to think that crazy girl Madonna is just like any mom, cringing at the thought of her daughter dyeing her hair. I’m not a MAdonna fan anymore…but that’s cute.

  24. Alix says:

Not allowed to color her hair, but certainly allowed to wear plenty of makeup at age thirteen. Still, a lovely girl.

  25. Mingy says:

    @Eileen, me too!

  26. Louisa says:

Psycic eyes- I totally get where you are coming from, I am a parent also. What I also learned as a parent, is that it changes who you are the the choices you make in light of your new dependants.. Madonna was once a single girl with no kids in sight when she “sexualized our kids”. I believe it is the parents responsibility to make sure they’re kids are not exposed to too much, not entertainers to make less bold choices. The sexualization of our kids is an overwhelming force in this society and yes, madonna was a part of this but we all bought into it as teenagers, young adults. I can tell you my choices today are 100% different than what they were before kids.

  27. wunderkindt says:

Madonna will always try to upstage Lola and want to run the whole show.

She will live vicariously thru Lola’s youth and try to claim it as her own.

  28. guesty says:

lola is so pretty…madonna looks so proud. so sweet.

  29. Kate says:

I’m a fan of Madonna’s music and ability to stay relevant for 25 years, but this strikes me as not only pathetic but wrong on a number of different levels. Query why a “super strict” mother would expose her 13 year old daughter to the international media on a routine basis. Madonna may have rules about tv and hair color and food, but she has no problem whoring her kid out to the masses so (a) Madonna can stay relevant, and (b) her kid can have a gift wrapped life of fame and fortune.
Sorry, but the track record of celebrity kids thrust in the spotlight at an early age isn’t exactly stellar. This honestly makes me kind of sick.

  30. Bunny says:

Sorry Madonna…you haven’t been cool in a while, especially since you put those cutlets in your cheeks.

  31. Chris says:

“She will live vicariously thru Lola’s youth and try to claim it as her own.”

True and a lot of parents do that. I was in Borders the other night and the kid’s book section was dominated by kid’s books from my childhood. It’s like today’s adults want to relive their childhoods by making their kids like the same stuff they did. It’s weird and wrong.

  32. bizzy says:

lola’s the same age as tavi gevinson???

ok. self-censoring anything else i can think of to add to that.

  33. jemshoes says:

It’s a natural response to give your children whatever you felt you lacked in life growing up, whether that’s a particular style of parenting, a particular kind of lifestyle, etc. I think Madonna is trying to give Lola the best start in life, and to shelter and protect her as much as she can, until her daughter grows up and decides she wants to make her own decisions and run her own life. And I like that they’re close and are friends. Lola seems to be very well adjusted, considering she is Madonna’s kid! 🙂

  34. Nudgie says:

    Madge is soooooo……80’s.

(Not the year 1980 – I mean she looks EIGHTY!!!)

  35. Lushus L. says:

@Psychic Eyes, I always enjoy your posts! “Drugged out lemur ” is the perfect description of Taylor Momsen. I knew she reminded me of something! No offense to lemurs.

  36. Yasmine says:

Oh come on! Madonna isn’t being strict because she knows a thing or two about sensible parenting. It’s cause she’s a CONTROL FREAK. She should take whatever dignity she has left and retire, face included.

  37. Carrie says:

I think Madonna is most likable as a Mom- when I see pictures of her with her kids, or that video, she seems so much more attractive as a person.

  38. Jules says:

Let it go old woman. You are as annoying as your phony English accent.

  39. Liana says:

Madonna made and created what this and many generations call “cool” and innovative
    *************

Not really. I was doing the combat boots (or Converse high tops) and leather jacket thing because that’s how the Ramones dressed. None of my style is influenced in any way by Madonna, and I was a kid in the 80’s.

  40. Dhavy says:

Why so much hate? I know the woman is old but there a lot of us here that grew up with her music and absolutely loved everything she did to shock us because no other woman (or man) was able to pull it off. She has managed to stay in the pop culture for so long and I don’t think she’s going away soon, not many artists have managed to do that.

Therefore, I’m sorry if I offend the young ones but Lady Gaga is just a Madge wannabe and so far, nothing Lady Gaga has done impresses me the way Madonna has.

I know the post is not about that and all about her and her daughter, so to those who say she’s whoring Lola I say she’s better off with Madge being her mother than having a Kardashian, a Lohan or a Spears as a mother

  41. Kate says:

“Love Angelina’s” post is brilliant, I agree wholeheartedly.

Madonna is an icon, she will forever be cool for what she accomplished and how she changed pop culture and entertainment. From a career standpoint, Madonna doesn’t need her daughter, but her daughter definitely needs her right now.

You can see how genuine Madonna is and how much she loves her daughter, I hope Lourdes realizes it and appreciates it.

  42. Confuzzle says:

Whatever happened to Vadge’s bio son? Has he evaporated?

  43. RHONYC says:

    @ Confuzzle

Whatever happened to Vadge’s bio son? Has he evaporated?

    —————————————-

    no.

guy (ya, know…the non-famewhore parent) got custody of him. 🙂

  44. skibunny says:

I agree Madonna is probably a control freak but I’d bet she’s a great mother as well.
Some of you come across as if you dont think you will ever be fifty. Get a grip. It will happen to you too.

  45. Tazina says:

I think Madonna looks just fine. She is not trying to be as cool as her daughter. What she is trying to do is be a good mom and set strict rules for her daughter. Lourdes may not admit it but she appreciates the discipline. Children don’t really want to run wild with no structure and discipline in their lives.. I think so far Madonna has done a very good job with Lourdes and her other children.

I hear the new clothing line is selling like hot cakes. What I’ve seen so far is cute.

  46. Gigohead says:

Don’t blame Madonna for being next to her girl. Sure Madonna would like to suck the attention from the whole world if she could but in this instance it seemed a good PR move to have Madonna close by to shield her kid from any negative reporters asking embarrassing questions.

  47. Missfit says:

I think that Madonna is just being herself…she is just a proud mama and so would I if I were in that situation. Either way when my daughter gets older, I might just be all like that too with her, gushing and bragging…why not, it’s your kid? And besides, M wasn’t too bad, she wasn’t embarrassing her or anything, if anyone thinks that was silly…my mom was BAD and REALLY embarrassing when I was that age, geeze. I’m glad she compliments Lola, not many parents do that…some make their kids feel like crap. I think the sharing part is cute too. 😉

  48. Lyla says:

I agree with post 42–kind of. You don’t just throw a 13 yr old girl in front of a bunch of reporters all on her own. Madonna has a lot of experience in front of the camera and knows how the paps can be.
I also agree with some of the other posts though. She can say she’s proud of her daughter and that’s great. But it’s not like Lourdes had to work her way up. She was already at the top. Being Madonna’s daughter not only opens doors–it pretty much guarantees that you will never see a closed door. Not trying to be hateful, but you know it’s the truth.

  49. DiMi says:

Um, Madonna gets a lifetime cool pass. She’s an icon. Also, I don’t think we should be telling a 50 year old woman what to wear. She’s an adult. She can wear what she wants. This ageism is out of control. And it’s sexist. I don’t see anybody telling Hef to stop wearing a silly bathrobe. It’s because he’s an icon AND a man. Let’s show Madonna the same courtesy. She’s a significant cultural figure for the late 20th century. She deserves some respect.

Madonna seems loving and supportive towards her daughter. I’m surprised that she is so doting.

  50. PrimeO says:

    @40 Confuzzle:

“Whatever happened to Vadge’s bio son? Has he evaporated?”

That would be son Rocco, who is 10, father is Guy Ritchie…

and he’s right there at Macy’s with his mom, sister, and sister’s bio dad, Carlos Leon:

    http://www.dlisted.com/node/38962/images/madgemacys1.jpg

  51. Ya both mother and daughter both are equally beautiful. But so begin a good mother she should be some where strict to her. Because she has good and bad experiences in her life.

  52. Daniella says:

They seem like a mother & daughter having a good time together. I don’t why there has to some “story” here. I think Lourdes is a confident, smart young lady and that’s pretty cool!

  53. My2Cents says:

Madonna is Queen of Cool. Always has been and always will be even as she is getting older.
Personally I CANT STAND what the average 50 year old woman wears. I try and get my Mum in some funkier clothes all the time.

  54. Chris says:

That kid better start smiling or they’ll start drawing comparisons between her and Kristen Stewart.

  55. Daisy says:

Love Madonna. Just wish she wouldn’t have criticized Lola’s flannel shirt in front of the press. what was that all about? I guess she did back off after she made the comment, maybe she caught herself being overly judgmental and self-corrected. Mother’s aren’t perfect.

  56. mary jane says:

Somethings really off here 13 years old …8th grade ….trigonometry…

Wow…. I guess this kid won’t fair too well on the SAT’s.

  57. sickofit says:

sorry but madonna took that kid to the spotlight from age 1? Remember those pics in voguevanityfairwhateva?
    i think shes pathetic…

  58. gee says:

    Lola is so pretty!

  59. lillsche says:

to try does not mean to succeed 😉

i really find it pittyful if people cannot get old with dignity.

especially in madge’s case: she was and still is so successful. i am sure she will still keep on being successful with some wrinkles and without cloths for people in their twenties…

  60. telesma says:

WTF are you kidding me??? She’s MADONNA, she never stopped being cool. Lola is a beautiful girl, but will be lucky if she’s half as awesome as her mother. Madge is a one-off.
