Earlier this week, I asked the question: “Will Colin Firth win the Oscar this year for The King’s Speech?” Well, the first trailer for the film came out, and I think I can say with a certain degree of confidence that Colin Firth has a really, really, REALLY good chance at taking home that little gold man. I hope I’m not jinxing it. To recap, the film is about King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mum), who were QEII’s parents. King George assumed the throne of England after his brother, King Edward, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. King George VI ruled throughout World War II, and he died of cancer several years after the war. He was beloved by his people, who thought he was a humble, genuine, honest chap, and King George and Winston Churchill are given a lot of credit for holding England – and the Empire – together through the war. Here’s the trailer:
It has everything the Academy loves: a cast of beloved and talented British actors, headlined by two leads (Firth and Helena Bonham-Carter) that have never won the big prize. It’s got costume porn. It’s got history – World War II fetishists are a large part of the Academy. It’s got a character trying to overcome a physical and/or psychological issue. And it’s got Geoffrey Rush, an Academy favorite.
Also – I adore what Colin is doing with his voice. He really has changed it completely, from the register to the accent to the complicated stuttering mannerisms. He must have done a ton of work to get his voice to sound like that. And the Academy loves that sh-t.
My only complaint about the trailer is that it seems like the film might end chronologically before or during the war – I would really hope they follow King George through the war years into victory. Just my hope.

It’s not about the war…it’s about him overcoming his stammer and being able to address England on the radio. The war is a very minor part of this movie. I’ve seen it and it’s wonderful, but if you’re expecting a WWII flick, you’ll be very disappointed.
Whoohoo!!!!
This film also has Jennifer Ehle- who played Elizabeth Bennet to Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy in the legendary BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice! My heart went pitter-patter when I found out.
I really hope he does! I absolutely LOVE Colin, and I think we would be hard pressed to find someone who DOESN’T love him! Crossing my fingers for him!
Oh this looks fantastic!!!!
Can this come out NOW, please?
I am so looking forward to this, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Colin.
Mr Darcy forever!
BTW, has CF been in HGF recently?
Cool! Hope he does win, if he’s as good as you say. Helena Bonham-Carter is such a good actress.. I love her! She is so quirky and a good friend to my lover, Johnny Depp.
Oh, this does look very good. Does anyone know when it comes out? I somehow feel, though, that after seeing the trailer I’ve already seen the movie.
Stop talking about possible awards. If he gets overexposed and overhyped so early in the season, it lowers his chances of winning later. You don’t want him to peak too early in the season.
@Jackson, understand what you’re saying, it seems like that with a lot of film trailers, they give away so much that rather than enticing to see the film, you feel like you’ve already have
Oh I love him and ruru thanks for the heads up can’t wait I will keep my fingers crossed for him this year.
Can’t wait to see this film and would love for Colin to win a well-deserved Oscar. He’s such an “under the radar” actor…keeps a low profile and is consistently good at whatever role he plays.
I WANT TO SEE THIS! looks great!
Wow, that looks really good. I love Colin Firth but don’t really care if he wins an oscar or not. Whatever happens, everyone can recognize that he is a tremendous actor.
The trailer gave me the chills! Can’t wait to see the film. Colin has done an incredible job with the voice — normally his voice is so deep and resonant.
Does anybody know what Jennifer Ehle’s role is? I’m a huge fan.
Looks awesome! I love Geoffrey Rush too!
Very, very excited for this film. So much great acting talent (Geoffrey Rush is the icing on the cake IMHO because he does quirky so brilliantly). King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were beloved for many reasons during World War II, one of the main ones being that they chose to REMAIN in London throughout, even during The Blitz, and paid regular visits to bombing sites. Princess Elizabeth even volunteered for Army duty as a driver and mechanic for heavy transport vehicles. As an aside, the Queen Mum was also widely respected for her insistence on adhering to strict wartime rationing policies. This included fabric: the Imperial War Museum in London has a wonderful display of the frocks and gowns the Queen Mum had her designers make with rationed fabric. I cannot dismiss the older British Royals because they seemed to have had an incredible sense of patriotism and duty (I sense this will shine through in this movie).
Jennifer Ehle plays Geoffrey Rush’s wife in the movie…there is only one scene with her and Colin together, but it’s a good one!
Gosh, I love him to the point of no return…
He should win an Oscar for A Single Man. He was, is and is always BRILLLIANT!
LOOOOOVE COLIN FIRTH! He will forever be Mr Darcy to me. He is a great actor. Havent seen this movie but he’s never had a bad part so I hope he does win!
He was absolutely fantastic in A Single Man. Loved that movie. He has more talent in his little finger than many do in their whole bodies…just take a look at your average Hollywood movie.
Go Colin! He certainly deserves all the accolades.
I LOVE his work!!!
I loved him in A Single Man as well as Nanny McPhee. He’s the best.
Wow, really looking forward to seeing this movie, Colin is amazing and deserves the oscar.
I feel like I just watched the entire movie…
This just shot right to the top of my movie list! Thanks Kaiser!
If Colin doesn’t win, I’m wrecking The Kodak Theatre…I kid, I kid.
Gooo Mr. Darcy!!!
My GOD is he hot. Living in Toronto I saw him in person at TIFF. Him and Geoffrey Rush. Firth was tall and gentle and handsome and high fived some fans lol. Can’t wait to see King’s Speech. Personally a fan of the director (Tom Hooper who directed HBO series John Adams) too. He’s definitely one of those so called overdue actors who totally deserve Oscars. Loved him in A Single Man too. Stellar performance.
He’s wonderful. I was thinking that watching him play Vermeer in Girl With a Pearl Earring last night. And he will forever be THE Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
“Costume porn”- Love it!
