Katherine Heigl and her new shade of washed-out blonde were on Letterman last night. In this latest appearance, she wasn’t complaining bitterly about her work schedule or trying to seem human by explaining how heartbreaking motherhood can be. She was puffing on an electronic cigarette and trying to act badass. Heigl explained that she’s trying to quit smoking after multiple attempts. The electronic cigarette contains liquid nicotine and emits a water vapor that’s harmless and gives the user the feeling of smoking. Betty Confidential has more on Heigl’s Letterman appearance and some background on the device she was using:
It was a TV scene straight out of the 1960s, when everybody smoked everywhere: Katherine Heigl fired up a cigarette while talking with David Letterman. With the widely known health risks of cigarettes, they’ve been banned everywhere from offices to restaurants.
But Heigl smoked an e-cigarette, an electronic device that provides short hits of nicotine or a vapor that actually tastes like nicotine. The smoker blows the smoke out, just like they would do with a “real” cigarette. Heigl, 31, began smoking at age 25 (most users start much earlier) and told Letterman that she really wants to quit but hasn’t been able to. “I did the patch, I did the gum, I did the [prescription medicine] Chantix twice. I went bananas,” the actress told Letterman, according to tvsquad. But the e-cigarette seems to be working.
Heigl even convinced Letterman, a cigar smoker, to try the e-cigarette. He said it made him feel dizzy; people often have that side effect when taking nicotine for the first time, or after a long period of not using it.
The drawback to the e-cigarette : It’s addictive, just as nicotine gum is. “I’m totally addicted to the device,” Heigl said to Letterman.
So what’s the difference from being addicted to tobacco as we know it? It depends on how much nicotine you’re using in in the electronic cigarette. The amounts are designated low to extra-high. Heigl didn’t say what the level of nicotine was in her smokes.
The federal Food and Drug Administration hasn’t ruled yet on the e-cigarettes, although preliminary tests have shown that there are often low levels of nicotine even in cigarettes that say they are nicotine-free. The FDA also has said that the products should be sold with health warnings and that they’re concerned that the e-cigarette is being marketed to young people.
E-cigarettes have already been banned in Australia and Canada, and while it’s not certain whether that will happen in the U.S., Heigl might want to stock up on her supply.

Heigl is promoting yet another romcom that looks like a piece of crap (and contains multiple crap jokes), Life As We Know It, which is out October 8 and co-stars Josh Duhamel. Her only other film this year, Killers, bombed at the box office and was critically panned. I’m obviously not a fan of hers, but good for her for quitting smoking. She may want to quit smoking the electronic cigarettes too, though. An FDA study in 2009 found that many contained dangerous carcinogens including chemicals found in antifreeze. At least the smoker is the only one being exposed, but it sounds scary and people should be warned. Up until earlier this month, the FDA had not regulated e-Cigarettes, although they won a court battle this year and recently announced that they planned to do so.
Let’s get back to Heigl’s hair – as Kaiser mentioned it’s a very bad shade for her. Here’s a comparison photo from back when she had dark Dallas-style hair. It was just as bad and it’s hard to tell which is worse. She’s so pretty and her hair just ruins it for her.

When Grey’s first came out I thought she was the end all be all-she was so gorgeous…but her demeanor makes her ‘meh’.
Ew! She looks as though she’s Madonna dressed up at Brittny Spears for Halloween.
Good lord, that blonde is *dreadful*. It looks like she did it herself with a drugstore kit.
She comes across as a bitch in a stich and her new movie looks awful (though Fergie’s husband looks kind of hot, at least too hot for Fergie).
Why is her neck so red in the video?
JOOOOOOSHHHHHHH. Hell Yeah, my FergieFerg’s husband is HOOOT. He’s the only reason why I’m seeing this movie.
One of my best friends bought the e cigarette because she wanted to quit smoking (which she didnt), I was curious so I took a puff… and EW, that thing is awful.
yeah and a real cigarette is safer?? come on. fda is lobbied by big pharma, who makes billions of dollars each year from people smoking cigarettes. think about it.
I dont’ get why people get irritated with Heigl . She seems nice and she’s always smiling.
Pretty sad when she can’t even go the length of time for Lettermans show without a cigarette. I think Katherine Heigl, if she’s not careful, is going to be the newest version of Jennifer Anniston. Playing the same role over and over again until we all get sick of it and stop watching her crappy movies.
Though I do hear her latest movie isn’t too bad. But since I don’t like either her or Josh, I won’t be watching this one.
hate her movie choices… miss early-years Izzie on grey’s! 🙁
That FDA study is a joke. The ecig has the same ingredients as nicotine gum or patches. The FDA just wants a chuck of change for the pharm companies.
It almost looks like it isn’t her hair the way it “sits” on her head. (I know it is her hair but it looks bad.)
Too bad she’s burned so many bridges, trashing her projects & writers, she may need some of those folks again soon.
She’ll be trashing our Stephanie Plum soon. (sob! sob!)
I wonder how much she got paid? She has to have been paid for the e cigarette – it’s prime promotion. She’s been on shows before without cigarettes, so why is she now on and desprately needing one? I call shameless paid promotion!
@Kait: if she were getting paid to endorse, why didn’t she name the brand? There are many.
I think it’s great this was shown on tv. Brings some legitimacy to it. (whether you like Heigl or not. I happen to like her but not her romcom movies)
I agree with shannon and aenflex, FDA is funded by the pharmaceutical companies who would lose millions if their current smokers switched. And don’t forgot the gov’t. That’s a HUGE chunk of sin-tax they’d lose. Massive. Every article (incl. this one) mentioning the “fda study” always zeros in on that single one. ONE study. Think about that.
Sorry, Celebitchy, but nothing with nicotine in it is “harmless.”
She had a bad rep when she worked on that tv show. Very diva-ish. Also she just comes off as fake, even when she’s smiling. Sorry to be so mean, but I just don’t like her. Did not watch her tv show (altho have visited the set) and have never been able to sit thru any of her movies. I think she’s pretty, but don’t like her voice for some reason.
who the heck starts smoking at 25? I’d expect that foolishness from a teenager
promoting this toxic crap in any form is shameful
I hate hate hate hate that blonde hair on her.
She definitely suits a darker shade of hair colour, maybe something more in the middle range somewhere, but she definitely does NOT suit hair that shade of blonde, at all.
I usually can’t stand her, but didn’t mind her at all in this interview.
lordy, that blonde hair is bad.
Nicotine alone is as harmful as caffeine. Once you take out all the other nasty crap they put in cigarettes (tar, tobacco, formaldehyde(sp?), etc) the e-cigarette isn’t any worse for you than coffee. My husband is desperately trying to quit smoking, and this is the only thing that’s worked for him so far. They come in a variety of levels of nicotine, so you’re able to step yourself down, but still have that oral fixation/habit thing that you don’t get with the patch or gum.
But I think it’s stupid that she brought it on the show. Maybe she was just proud of her new toy? (I know my husband had to show his e-cigarette off to all his smoker friends when he first got it.) But her bringing it on just feeds the foolish argument that the e-cigarette should be banned because it encourages young people to ‘smoke’.
Why is this bland person famous? Hollywood has low standards nowadays.
I think she is a bitch who likes to tell it like she sees it. Ergo, I now love her. Better to be an up front bitch vs. the Jessica Alba type of behind everyone’s back bitch.
she has weird knock knees or something
i must be the only one around here but i think that i actually like her..what is wrong with me????
she needs to hit the gym and tone up a bit.
E-cigarettes are NOT approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation device. And the FDA is investigating the alleged false claims that the companies have made. So anyone who thinks that they are endorsed by the FDA are wrong. And the idea that nicotine is safe is just hooey. Cigarettes are worse because of all the chemicals, but nicotine isn’t doing you any favors either. I work as a smoking cessation counselor, so I’m pretty familiar with the topic.
I started smoking at ten, quit when I was twenty (with many ‘false starts’ along the way). Cold turkey. If I can do it, anyone can. I think the trick is to wrap your mind around it first, then take it one day at a time….
That makes no sense, does it?
Who the HELL cares what the FDA thinks or endorses???
It is just another agency that if the “palms” get greased the product will be endorsed
Take some time an read what the FDA appproves, then later has to rebuff there endorsement because products are found to either be harmful or not..
This electronic cigarette consists of two pieces for most convenience and the 20 different available tastes are guaranteed to be full of flavor.
It’s a shame that the article only points out that e-cigarettes usually contain nicotine. What would be nice is to see an article that points out the positives of an electric cigarette like it doesn’t contain all of the harmful, cancerous substances inherent in the combustion of tobacco.
It should also say that she is blowing out water vapor and not smoke, although it looks like smoke and feels like smoke to the user.
I’m glad a celebrety finally had the “balls” to use one in a public forum. Perhaps more people will be exposed to this healthier alternative now.
I do not even understand how I stopped up here, but I believed this post was once good. I do not know who you’re but certainly you’re going to a famous blogger when you are not already 😉 Cheers!
I too am glad to see a celeb smoking e cigarettes. Not all Electronic cigarette companies are bad. For example: Chase Electronic Cigarettes is trying to get smokers to quit smoking. Even have ingredients on their site. FDA needs to wake up and see a good quit-smoking method right in front of them… ECIGS!
