Oscar nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, 27, was on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this week. (Videos below) I’ve never seen her interviewed before and she’s really funny and told some great stories. I was surprised at first by how big she is as I’ve never seen her on video and, let’s face it, we’re used to seeing stick thin people on television. She cracked me up so much that I soon got over it. We’ve heard diva rumors about Gabby, but she came across very well here and I found her so entertaining. She was promoting her role on the Showtime series The Big C, with Laura Linney. The first season is airing now and it’s been picked up for a second season. Here’s some of what she said:
On freaking out after accidentally buying a pot flavored lollipop in Amsterdam
I took a trip to Amsterdam, I won this award or something… then I parlayed it into like 3 days in Amsterdam… I’m a nerd and I don’t smoke pot. I went to a souvenir shop and I just wanted to buy a regular lollipop. I accidentally bought weed lollipops… I got so scared. I felt like a criminal… it turns out it wasn’t weed pops, it was weed flavored pops. I’m hallucinating thinking I’m high and really I’m just stupid. On going to the red light district
I took a tour. It’s so crazy. The prostitutes there pay taxes they have health insurance and everything. The red light district is next to a church and in the middle of all these windows with ladies in them.. wearing bikinis and lingerie and stuff there is seriously an elementary school in between these windows. The kids who go there are like 4 or 5 years old till they’re like 9 or 10. They tell the kids when they first start going that the ladies are just getting ready to go to the beach. By the time they graduate they know what’s up.On living without a roommate for once
One of [my roommates] was weird. The two of us who were cool moved on to better and bigger things in Manhattan. I could have done it, if that one dude wasn’t weird. I live by myself… All of my food spoils because I can never eat it fast enough. Haha, I see your joke [laughs] but I can’t eat it. I’m pretty sure there’s still a burrito there from when I first moved in.On seeing ghosts as a kid
I’m not afraid of burglars or anything because there’s lots of security, but there’s no security system that protects you from ghosts. [There aren’t ghosts] in my current house, but when I was growing up in my apartment in Brooklyn my brother and I used to play with ghosts and I know I sound crazy but it happened. I definitely remember a woman in a wedding dress and I remember a cowboy… [laughs] there was a rumor that my building was built on a burial ground.Kimmel: sometimes kids I don’t know if they’re half dreaming or imaginary friends. They convince each other when it’s brother and sister. My kids thought they saw a ghost in the house.
Sidibe: Maybe they did, you just don’t trust your kids. They see it!
To all the people who are going to immediately rag on Gabby for her weight – watch a little of the videos first. (I don’t know why I’m bothering to say that, as it’s not like those people are going to read this far.) If you can’t do so at work and were just going to write some variation of “she’s big,” please wait to comment until you can get home and watch them. I would like to make this about her interview, not about her size. Yes it’s hard not to notice and she is “unhealthy” at that weight, but I doubt the people who are prone to mocking her care about her health at all. I understand the need to comment on it, but please no flame wars.
Getting back to the ghost issue – I agree with Kimmel that it was probably an issue of kids with overactive imaginations. I don’t believe in ghosts now, but there was a time when I did. I saw a few supernatural things that seemed real to me. Unlike Gabby I wasn’t avoiding drugs much at that point and I’m sure that would explain a lot of it. I would have had a lot more than just some pot lollipops in Amsterdam.
Thanks to ONTD for the heads up on these videos. There’s also a cute skit, the third one below, where Gabby tells Jimmy that she needs him to help out a sick kid. It’s pretty funny.
That dress is horrible!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen her interviewed, but she sounds like she’s quite funny…”I’m hallucinating thinking I’m high and really I’m just stupid.”
I was convinced I used to see ghosts in my house as a child and in my teens. It was a combination of over-active imagination, horror stories, t.v. and folklore /superstition handed down from the elder generations.
But now I know better.
I’m not really concerned about her health…I just think she looks hideous.
You know, I think she’s slowly slimming down. Her role on “The Big C” involves Linney’s character bribing her to lose weight, so who knows, by the end of the series she could look like Jennifer Hudson.
What is the point of weed flavored lollipops that don’t actually contain weed? What a letdown!
“They tell the kids when they first start going that the ladies are just getting ready to go to the beach. By the time they graduate they know what’s up.”
HAHAHA I love you Gabby
Actually, I am a ghost. I wasn’t going to say anything, but since it’s come up…
She is pretty funny. Bet those ghosts were all murdered Little Debbie snacks! Hey,,, I watched the videos 1st!
I like her a lot. LOVE her character on The Big C. She’s hilarious and it’s a great show. I feel bad for her because most of her weight issues are in her arms and that is such a bitch to get rid of. You can tell the way her weight is distributed that a lot of it is genetics. She’ll never be Kate Moss size but really who the hell cares. She funny, lovely and a great actress. If she keeps bringing the goods I’ll keep being a fan.
she seems to have a great sense of humor.
She has a beautiful personality and a radiant face! But please! She is a walking heart attack. Wish she would get serious about losing the extra pounds.
I adore her! She’s really funny and smart and she’s a great actress.
I think she’s wonderful.
I believe her about the ghosts. When you are little i believe you are susceptible becuase you don’t know to think any differently. Once my mom’s friend had purchased an old Victorian mansion and started building a children’s room (she didn’t have any kids)and went crazy buying antique cradles, toys, table and chairs…. and was in the search for a tea set.
When i came to visit she was really excited to show an actual child (i was 8)the room, but once i stepped inside I got the chills and heard whispering… they didn’t want me in there and i refused to go in. Later on she told my mom that her sister, a psychic came to visit and told her that there ghost children in the house, they loved their room and are planning a tea party. Yep, kids know things.
She’s a really good person. Weight should not be an issue. I love to watch ghost stories on TV, gets me good and scared. My kinda fun.
I am certainly not a child & I totally believe in ghosts. I grew up in & still live in a city that was founded in the 1600s & have lived in several houses & apartments that have been haunted. Anyone who has lived in on of these 300 year old buildings & think that they aren’t haunted are either lying or blind! (“These” meaning the old houses in my particular city, lest anyone be offended)
Her arms look large to me, but other than that I think she looks fab!
Used to believe in ghosts and the like, but now I see the error of my ways. What really bothers me are those “Ghost Hunters” shows. How gullible are people? I think that if you google Ghost Hunters and fraud, you get a whole bunch of hits. A former “investigator” came forward and revealed that it is all for entertainment purposes.
“You can tell the way her weight is distributed that a lot of it is genetics.”
Where the fat cells are located in her body is genetic. How much she eats is not. The fact that she is grossly overweight is also not attributable to genetics.
I think she is really funny and smart and I’d like her to be around a long time, so I hope she gets a handle on her weight issue.
You guys are creeping me out with the ghost stories!
Many people believe children are closely connected to the spirit world…It’s only as they get older that they loose the bond mostly due to adults in their lives telling them it’s only their imagination.
That’s true lilred, I have heard that too. Maybe there is something to it, although I tend to rationalize it.
My sister told me once that one night she swore she saw the face of an elderly lady pressed up close to her window.
The next day we were told that our ‘nan had passed away.
lilred, I’ve heard that, too.
makes you wonder if any of those deemed “imaginary friends” by the parents were actually ghosts.
I like her.
But her size is very distracting to me in that I just feel pained for her – like you can just feel the adipose tissue squeezing her arteries and heart flat from the outside. Not to mention the fat deposits inside her heart and arteries.
I can’t imagine carrying that much weight around. I know she doesn’t ask for anyone’s sympathy, but I can’t help but really feel for her. Being that over-weight is a very sad experience, no matter how much the person says it is not.
her arms are so jelly
man, what a great disclaimer about keeping this on topic… it’s so sad that everytime a big person says something, it’s immediately dismissed in favor of talking about their weight… why not treat this person like a valid human being? Why is that so hard for people???
howard stern was right, she’ll only work in hollywood as the token fat girl.
I definitely believe her about the ghosts. When my Grandma died she came and visited us all to let us know she was okay. I was lying in bed and suddenly I felt someone sit on my bed but there was no one I could see but someone was definitely sitting on my bed. My cousin was in denial about our Grandma dying and the night before the funeral she came out of her room crying and said that her room got all misty and she felt like Grandma was telling her she was okay and my Dad was working in his office when his pen suddenly jumped off the desk and rolled onto the floor. There are other things as well but you get the idea.
And my other cousin’s fiancé died and then two years later she had a baby with someone else and her daughter would always be looking in the corner laughing or when she could talk my cousin would hear her talking to someone but no one was there and one day my cousin was looking through old photos and her daughter saw one of my cousin and her late fiancé and she said that he was her friend and he was sitting next to her right now!
