Evan Rachel Wood says Marilyn Manson “had a hand in raising” her

nylon1

Evan Rachel Wood is the November cover girl for Nylon. I can’t say I care much for this photo shoot, but I guess it’s not aimed at me. It just seems like you’d want to not go for the bleached white background when your cover girl is really pale. ERW looks like a ghost. Instead of being stylish, it’s antiseptic. Whatever. Anyway, in the interview excerpts (here at Nylon), ERW is sketchy too. Now, I’ve always felt ERW was a strange girl just in general, but her on-and-off relationship with Marilyn Manson (it’s currently “off”) adds to general atmosphere of ERW being a weird, troubled young woman. In the Nylon interview, she talks about her off-again relationship with Marilyn, saying, “I mean, dating Marilyn Manson… it’s kind of impossible to keep that out of the spotlight… He had a hand in raising me! Oh, I’m always gonna love that guy. He’s a genius, he’s an amazing artist, we’re still friends. Some things just aren’t meant to be.” Oh, Evan. You poor, poor girl.

For November’s America issue, we needed a cover girl who was smart, fearless, and cool – essential traits of our readers all over the country. Nursing our True Blood obsession and our thrill of young talent, we turned to Evan Rachel Wood, who’s graced our cover three times before. The North Carolina native seemed like a perfect choice to star on our cover – both in her photos and her interview. See snippets of both below, then get the entire story in our November issue, on stands tomorrow.

On Kate Winslet coaxing her into doing a nude scene:
“I always had a rule that I was only going to do topless and never the whole package, I have to have some kind of mystery! But she then explained to me what a merkin was…”

On Marilyn Manson
“I mean, dating Marilyn Manson… it’s kind of impossible to keep that out of the spotlight… He had a hand in raising me! Oh, I’m always gonna love that guy. He’s a genius, he’s an amazing artist, we’re still friends. Some things just aren’t meant to be.”

On her next musical role:
“I wanna play Janis Joplin. Can I just claim that now please?… Across the Universe is not how I sing- that was very pretty. I sing more like Janis, rough and loud.”

On George Clooney:
“He goes, ‘You’re really good at going from innocent to sexy in the drop of a hat,’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

[From Nylon]

Considering ERW met and fell for Marilyn when she was… 18 or 19 years old, yes, I understand how Marilyn had “a hand” in raising her. Think about what you were like at that age, and imagine falling in love with… that. That thing. You’re going to come out warped, no matter what. But I have to ask: where are this girl’s parents?

Also: It sounds like Clooney was hitting on her, correct? F-cking Clooney.

I like her pale skin against the white background – makes it feel a little more interesting & edgy rather than typical

As for ERW r’ship with MM, I love his music and he’s great on stage…but I wouldn’t choose him for my daughter unless the MM is just a persona and he’s pretty boring in real life

  2. Rasputin says:

Good Christ, Manson must have a great personality, because his appearance is in violations with my eyes.

  3. Liana says:

“had a hand in raising me” sounds so freaking creepy and incestuous. When I was younger, I had older friends who perhaps helped shape me into the woman I am, and perhaps that would have been a better choice of words for her to use. “Had a hand in raising me” sounds like she has daddy issues.

  4. starkindustries says:

“because his appearance is in violations with my eyes.”

He really does need to do a better job of policing his face.

  5. Larissa says:

I think she meant raising her as an “artist”…not as a kid, you people! lol

  6. oh-bb says:

I don’t think it’s that creepy. Maybe creepily worded, but I’d say my ex helped me “grow up.” I was 24 when we met, and wild as hell. By the time we split, I was settled and adult, and he’d taught me responsibility. I’d never say it like she did, but it’s kind of the same thing.

But if you’re learning responsibility from Manson, uh….

  7. Malorie says:

“That thing” as you call him is a man. A very intelligent one. Sexiness, sensuality, whatever you want to call it, is in the brain.
I´d prefer to date Manson 10000000 times better than Kellan Lutz.

  8. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

I like his music but he is creepy. She strikes me as the same.

  9. Kitten says:

She’s so talented. Not surprised she has some issues though.

  10. Miss A says:

    It’s Marilyn Manson, not Monroe!

  11. Samigirl says:

If I was a mother, the LAST person I would want to “have a hand in raising” my child would be Marilyn Manson.
I don’t care for ERW. I think she sucks in True Blood, and I think she has some deep issues with herself if she would go back to dating someone who had already talked about how much he cut himself after they had broken up.

  12. Zelda says:

My only issue with Manson is how tired his shtick is.
In 2010 aren’t we beyond thinking that people who look different than the standard are bad influences?

  13. candy says:

Talented actress. And pretty. George Clooney is creepy.

  14. dread pirate cuervo says:

She looks like someone I know who grates on my nerves, so I like her, but begrudgingly. I think she’s a great actress. Love her on True Blood & lovelovelove Across the Universe. I do, however, think she has major issues that will ony play out for the worse in the future.

  15. aenflex says:

she rocks. any woman that attractive who meets and falls in love with something so heinous gets some points in my book. she couldve had almost anyone with her looks and she chose to ignore it and go for, er, something different.

  16. Bodhi says:

She is “troubled” because she was with MM? That doesn’t track at all. MM may not be your (generic you) cup of tea, but their having a (seemingly) steady relationship for years doesn’t mean that she is troubled in any way.

I’m not a real big ERW fan, but I LOVE Across the Universe!!

  17. Kolby says:

I don’t get all the praise for her “talent.” I think she’s a mediocre actress at best. She overacts, and I’m never able to separate her from her characters.

  18. jessica says:

    What is a merkin????

  19. NC native says:

I’m from N.C. and have heard her father in interviews several times on a local radio show. He is a very talented theater actor. Has a fantastic voice. Anyway, my point is that he has said in several interviews that Brian, MM birth name, is actually a very normal guy. Very intelligent. I think the MM that we see is just a persona. Behind closed doors he apparently is more normal than we all could imagine.

  20. NC native says:

I meant MM name is Brian. David is the name of ERW dad…

  21. RHONYC says:

    On George Clooney:
“He goes, ‘You’re really good at going from innocent to sexy in the drop of a hat,’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

    BWAHAHAAAAA!!!

way to divert old george’s come-on Evan!

    clever girl. 🙂

  22. spinner says:

I remember seeing Manson & Dita on a live talk show. I was struck how intelligent & articulate Manson was. I could have listened to him talk all night. He kind of reminds me of Gene Simmons (Kiss)
    Both of them…odd genius.

  23. Obvious says:

@kolby, you aren’t supposed to separate her from her characters. a good actor IS their character.

  24. Iggles says:

I don’t get it. Probably never will, but hey to each their own.

  25. Amy says:

She’s beautiful. I like that she isn’t hanging out with Paris Hilton and ruining her skin with excessive tanning. It’s refreshing.

  26. Eleonor says:

The only thing Manson did to her was trying to turn her in a copy of Dita Von Teese.

  27. Liana says:

Brian Warner is very intelligent and I actually like his music. Just think it’s time for him to give up the makeup and the self cutting.

  28. Kolby says:

Obvious – what I meant is that I am never able to forget that it’s HER playing a character. Which is annoying and which takes me out of whatever it is I’m watching her in. Someone who receives such praise shoudl be able to become the character she plays, her persona and the obvious effort she is applying to a role should not be what a viewer notices.

  29. Jeri says:

She was great in 13 and so young, Holly Hunter played her Mom.

  30. connie says:

am with the few that think she’s overrated as an actress. She never registers as more than a meh to me. I couldn’t stand her on TB either, And that’s coming from someone that recognizes the acting on that show may not be everyone’s cup of tea!

  31. Jenna says:

I am a HUGE MM fan… MASSIVE.. and he is incredibly intelligent and talented. anyone who says otherwise hasen’t taken the time to listen to his music/interviews. most people are just thrown off by his “act”… that’s why he does it! it works! 🙂 i love him but i don’t like them together. he needs to be with someone closer to his age. Also, I don’t think she meant “raising me” like raising a child– I think she meant raising her abilities as an actress. Also, her knowledge of foundation.

  32. Camille says:

    @Bodhi and Liana: I agree!

I really like ERW, I don’t think shes ‘creepy’. She’s just not a typical bleached blonde, over tanned, fake-as, generic Hollywood starlet.

She is stunning looking and a competent actress. Nothing to hate on here.

  33. Gabriela says:

Across the Universe is my favorite movie, so I really, really try to like her. But dating MM and having sex with him for his music video makes it really hard to do.

  34. Liana says:

I don’t think she’s creepy at all. Her wording was a little creepy. But I also think she is BEAUTIFUL!

  35. Kate says:

    H.O.T.

  36. Trillion says:

#18 a merkin is a pubic wig for ladies.

  37. Kat says:

You’re asking where her parents were when she was 18, 19? she was old enough to make her own decisions by that point, and even if MM is some sort of sick character like what you make him out to be (and I really don’t think he is), good luck getting a headstrong 18 or 19-year old to listen to their parents.

I liked them together. I don’t like his music but appreciate him as an artist, and he is a really normal guy when you sit him down and talk to him (did you not see “Bowling for Columbine”?).

    Nice shoot of her.

  38. LittleDeadGirl says:

I’m not a huge MM music fan but I have to say every interview I’ve seen with the guy has been thoughtful and intelligent so I have no issues with him. I find her to be very very beautiful and she cracks me up on True Blood so again no issues with her either. Would kill for her skin and hair. So nice to see someone not tanned to the orange degree.

  39. HatersLoveMe says:

Listen. I don’t want to sound rude, however, whoever created this site is probably the most ignorant person ever. Calling a genious like Marilyn Manson a “thing.” That is terrible and RUDE. Answer me this, you conformists, would you like someone to call you a “thing?” Hmm? Marilyn Manson has more talent then you all have combined. Gaurenteed. I don’t blame Evan Rachel Wood for dating him. I would too! He’s a magnificent artist and you are just plain ignorant for saying he’s not. He’s an intelligent guy wether you want to believe it or not. So stop bashing on people with real talent, please and thank you.
“I never said to be like me, I say to be like you and make a difference.”
