Matt Damon claims he first met Clint Eastwood in a gay bar

mensjournal_cover

Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon are the cover “boys” for the November issue of Men’s Journal, to promote their film Hereafter (Matt stars, Clint directs). The article and Q&A is affectionate, and you can tell that the two men like each other a great deal. The writer even goes so far as to say that Matt’s the “favorite son” of tough-guy Clint. Here are some excerpts:

Clint Eastwood, tall and silvery and calm, with thinning hair that’s grown flyaway, is dressed in a pair of securely belted dark slacks and an immaculate white golf shirt. He crosses the lobby of a Toronto hotel, headed toward a table near the bar. At 80 and past concealing that fact, he looks like the wise old blue-eyed patriarch of an alternative-history America that has never lost a war or run a deficit. He comes off like a man with few worries and few regrets who lives by the Spartan motto “Get on with it” and has learned to dismiss his animal needs. When a nervous waiter sidles up to ask him what he’d like to drink, he answers gently, “Nothing, thank you.” Is there something he’d like to eat, perhaps? There isn’t.

Across the table from Eastwood, drinking coffee, sits his friend Matt Damon. He’s half Eastwood’s age and perhaps two-thirds his height, but he shares some of the old master’s famed tenacity. He’s also, as Eastwood used to be, an action hero with a brain who harbors long-term plans to use it by making movies of substance and integrity. In a show of affection rare in nature between alpha males, the two men greet each other with broad, sweet grins that even trained actors would have trouble faking.

They’re cute together.

Damon on how they met: “We met in a bar, a gay bar. I saw something in him through the eye slits of the Hannibal Lecter mask that he was wearing.”

Damon on The Departed, and on tough guys: “I went up to Marty [Scorsese] and said, ‘I want to lose every fight I’m in and I don’t want my dick to work.’ Anybody I’ve met in my life who really is tough, there’s no swagger, there’s no raising your voice. You sit down and talk to a guy from the Delta Force, it’s very pleasant and calm.”

Eastwood on Damon: “You get a feeling about somebody that they’re the kind of person who just likes to stand and deliver. And he is. He knows – he instinctively knows [what it takes to be a good director]. When he directs he’s going to be great at it because he understands actors.”

[From Men’s Journal]

Although it seems like a strange pairing, I can totally see how Clint and Matt are tight now, although I think writers are stretching the father-son likeness a bit. Matt has done some great action work, notably in the Bourne series, but he’ll never be quite as badass and lovely as Clint. That’s not a bad thing, though – because I can’t think of anyone who will ever be as badass as Clint.

In a gay bar, i think he was joking

  2. TQB says:

I love both these guys, but sadly, Hereafter was a huge disappointment. It wasn’t bad, it was just sort of… long and pointless. Damon and the gorgeous French lady were great, but Bryce Dallas Howard should actually be banned from film for her unwatchable performance.

  3. Val says:

He misremembered it wrong. The gay bar is where he met Clooney.

Regardless, “Hereafter” sucked. I love Clint and his sloooooowwwwww paced movies. But this one sucked!

    LMAO that’s hilarious

  6. Kitten says:

I’m sure it was a packed house since every other male actor in Hollywood was probably there. You know, because every male actor is gay. O_o
    Matt Damon is funny though!

  7. Diane says:

    Love both of them.

  8. Brittney says:

What a weird cover. The photo inside is lovely, but it looks like they just shoved two separate pictures together for the front.

  9. lilred says:

It’s nice, they seem to have a genuine affection for each other.

not all people in gay bars are gay, just like not all people in straight bars are straight. now, more importantly: WTF is up with that cover? looks like something off of “weekly world news.” is it just me or are most magazine covers just plain awful lately? i think magazines are in such bad financial shape that they had to fire all the art departments and now go to kinko’s to cut & paste the photos.

This looks like a good article. I just saw Invictus and it was great. They obviously worked very well together in that film.

Clint has made a variety of films, but it seems that in his later films he is exploring issues of interest to him rather than just what will make it at the box office, although he’s always interested in that, too. Unforgiven and the ugliness of life as a gunslinger was a really unique presentation of a western. The race issue using a minority that isn’t black or hispanic was a different take on a familiar subject. He’s long loved old California of the 20’s and 30s around the time he was born and captured the flavor of the culture well in Changeling. Now he’s taken on mortality and what happens after death. I haven’t seen it but I probably will. I liked Changeling and that didn’t get great reviews either, I don’t think.

I have a friend that is a waitress in Hollywood and she told me that alot of the stars go to gay bars because they don’t get pestered there by the public as much as they do in regular bars and restaurants.

  13. Hautie says:

I am going to have to agree about Bryce Dallas Howard’s lack of talent… I am amazed at how many great jobs she lands.

    But I love Damon… and Eastwood. 🙂

  14. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Love em both..

I loved Hereafter. It’s not for everyone but absolutely loved it.

  16. TeeTee says:

hmph, it wouldn’t surprise me…don’t say he didn’t warn you.

alot of important men in Hollywood attend gay bars–and nothing surprises me anymore.

  17. “alot of important men in Hollywood attend gay bars–and nothing surprises me anymore.”

And yet another pop culture reference sails over the heads of the hoi polloi.

  18. K-MAC says:

“Hereafter” was wonderful! It was a quiet masterpiece that will more than likely go unnoticed by the masses.

  19. Chris says:

Clint’s a living legend and is one of a kind. It’ll be a sad day when we lose him.

This? Is absolutely true. My uncle is a former Green Beret, and my husband’s best friend is retired Delta Force. Both of them are intense, very “alpha”, but not loud or visible about it. They’re both quiet, intelligent, and even charming. No swagger, no boasting, no loud talking or otherwise drawing attention to themselves. But I wouldn’t want to be the guy to piss either of them off.

And if you’ve ever been in a room with a whole Delta Force unit? Seriously intense, maybe even a little disturbing. They are killers, and the dangerous vibe is there, but they are *quiet* men.
