I was in England recently and went to both Windsor and Buckingham Palaces. I was amazed at how they just eliminated any reference to Diana at all. I understand that she was “difficult” but she is and always will be the mother of the future King. She would be one of the five people, living or dead, that I would love to have dinner with 😉
Thank you for the lovely pics of the lovely Princess of Wales! I’ve already weighed in on the first engagement post, but I’ll say it again-there will never be another Princess Diana. Her sons must miss her terribly.
My mom died before I got married, and I really felt her absence at my wedding. I think Prince William should be able to choose spectacle or private ceremony-I would fully respect his decision either way, but will the Brits and the Royals?
My favorite Diana photo was the shot, I believe by Mario Testino(?) of her in a black turtleneck, in black and white. Loved that shot. I do love the smiley one in the crown though.
Thanks for the blast from the past.
What happened to Diana broke my heart. Even when she was alive – I felt a genuine sadness for her, like you knew she had a deep sadness in her.
I will always remember where I was when I heard about her death – driving with my boyfriend at night through Oregon on a trip. I watched Prince Charles standing alone on the plane tarmac, with the plane coming in to receive her body.
What a wonderful soul to leave so soon.
A couple weeks after her death, we visited the tunnel in Paris where the fatal accident took place.
There was an ocean of flowers that people had left in her memory.
I miss seeing her as well as JFK, Jr. in the press.
William is the spit of her, Harry also has her nose
I loved watching her with any little kid that she met. You could tell she was in her element.
IDK what it is but I still get teary when I think of her and her life. If I see the photo of her casket with Harry’s note and the roses I’m a weepy mess.
I do to she was my favorite of the royals followed by the Duchess of York and Princess Anne. Di Never took a bad picture the only other princess that can be said of is Princess Grace {Grace Patricia “Gracie Bird” Kelly}of course she was an oscar winning actress before she was a princess. the two sad things her and Diana had in common were falandering husbands and miscarriages. correct Grace had 8 of them inbetween the births of Prince Albert March 18th 1958 and Princess Stephanie February 1st 1965 and Diana had the one after Harry was born
I love Princess Diana. I have two favorite photos: the one of her dancing with John Travolta in the White House and the one of her on the diving board on the yacht. A really lovely woman with a wonderful generous soul.

Sorry, Katie will never have Diana’s charm or connection with the public. For all her flaws, she had a common touch that Katie is trying so hard not to have.
I remember the sea of flowers after Diana’s death & young William & Harry reading the notes left by people. I remember Charles Spencer’s emotional eulogy for his sister and Elton John singing at the funeral….I can’t believe it’s been 13 years. Still so sad.
I remember when Diana came to NYC and visited the pediatric AIDS ward in Harlem Hospital. She was very gracous and courteous to all the hospital staff and she picked up and hugged the kids that nobody else in her entourage wanted to touch. A very classy lady, and way too good for the snooty assholes she had for in-laws.
There will never be another like her. She touched the world with her compassion, humility and grace. The Windsor family is a cruel lot. They treated her horribly and any normal person would crack from the pressure she faced.
I hope her sons hang on to her memory and continue to do humanitarian work.
Its ridiculous to compare any future partner of either of the Princes to their mother. Diana is an icon, not least because she died so tragically. Its unfair to Kate and whoever Harry ends up with.
The only way Prince William can have a private ceremony would be for him to abdicate. Its part of his role as future King to have a public ceremony. He’s clearly fully aware and accepts his duty.
Thanks for those pics.
She seemed so modern and truly fresh.
I remember her references to “the men in the grey suits”…it always made me sad for her that she had to find out how things ran from experience.
Especially the expectation that affairs are considered normal. Karma’s a b*tch, ain’t it Charles?
Hopefully, she taught her son(s) not to marry unless they were truly in love.
In gee, who didn’t see this coming eventually news: Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker are getting a divorce.
William really looks like his mother, with a dollop of his dad. He has his dad’s long face. It will be interesting to see how his genes and hers mix.
O/T Camille- TMZ updated their story and they are not divorcing.
There will never be another Princess Di she was a beauty and a phenomenom no amount of media hype can recreate the frenzy that surrounded her marraige her life and her death. Here’s hoping that Kate is a happier bride and lives a long and boring life with William.
Knowing what we now know about Charles and Di’s relationship, it was hard looking at those pictures. I can see the sadness in her and the deviousness in him. I remember watching the wedding and the coverage of her death. She was a great person. I hope her sons are able to find the happiness she never really had.
@devilgirl: Hmmm. Thanks for the update. Well sometimes where there is smoke, there is fire. 😉 Wouldn’t surprise me if there is either a pregnancy or divorce for them at some stage.
She was so gorgeous. I was very young when she died and I remember making a Princess Di scrapbook full of pictures of her, partially because I thought she was so pretty and partially to cheer up my mom, who was Diana’s age and very torn up over her death. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized what she truly meant to world.
I think Diana had her problems. But in so many ways, she was a lamb to the slaughter. I remember reading an interview with her early on, and the way she talked about Charles, I thought, she honestly thinks this is going to be a normal, happy marriage. Charles never saw it as anything but a duty, and he certainly thought he was entitled to carry on outside the marriage. The palace had to know that she was a clueless 19-yo. They had to.
@ak138, well said! That is what always bothered me about the entire situation -she really looked to be in love during those early years and that love was destroyed by Charles & then the Palace. She may have been difficult but she didn’t start out that way.
I just got back from living in London for 3 years and was surprised at the views of many of my friends there (all Brits). There was almost hostility towards her, very odd and sad.
We’ll never forget you Princess Diana!
@Camille- Yes, you are right about that. There must be something brewing but not totally boiled over yet.
@ak138 I agree and the same thing happened to Fergie also.
I have no use for the inbred welfare recipients of Windsor, but I kind of liked Diana and was saddened by her death.
I notice the news here is pushing this story as if anyone gives a crap – no one has Diana’s charisma, especially not this boring Kate Middleton.
Mel: Where did you get the public vs private ceremony info from? Charles, when he married Witchy Camilla, got married in a private civil ceremony (partially because of a technicality which would have allowed commoners to marry at Windsor if he had). Besides, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Charles is still the Prince of Wales; thus if William is not yet the Prince of Wales, how could he abdicate? Of course, he will be given a formal title once he marries..
missing Diana.
She would just be busting today.
Diana was a lamb to the slaughter. She was young and naive enough to think she was signing on to marry the love of her life and learned on her honeymoon that he was still involved with Camilla. Moreover, it was Camilla who gave the thumbs up to Charles to marry Diana, saying that she was so mousy she would pose no threat to their ongoing liaison. What they did to her was tantamount to gaslighting, making her believe that it was she who was unstable for not accepting their illicit behavior. I believe the phrase Charles used was, ‘Do you really expect me to be the first Prince of Wales not to have a mistress?’ That they stripped the future Queen Mother of her HRH title and left her one bodyguard says it all. Good luck Katie, just don’t ever become more popular than William or expect him to conform to the behaviorial mores of normal society.
@jc126 – I agree with you.
I’m not a royalist, and we can totally do without this inbred family haemorrhaging our taxes to fund their lavish lifestyles.
But Diana was very likeable and it was incredibly sad she met such an early and tragic death.
I dont think theres any expectations for Kate to be anything like Diana which is good for her really. I hope she’s left alone and not hounded in the same way Diana was. She really doesn’t deserve that.
I think this marriage will turn out the same way as Diana’s and Charles’ though. I dont see them lasting the course and living happily ever after…
Realist- When Charles and Camilla married, it was the second marriage for both, thus the private ceremony. There are some legal authorities in the UK who believe their marriage disqualifies Charles from ever being king. Defender of the Faith, etc.
William is second in line to the throne after his father and can remove himself from the line of succession any time he wants. So can Harry. If Waity Katie had been Catholic, or divorced with her ex still living, he would not have been permitted to marry her, no matter what, unless he removed himself from the line of succession to the throne. One of the reasons some believe that Charles can never be king is that, although Diana is gone, Camilla’s ex is still living. When Prince Michael (a cousin of the Queen) married Princess Michael, he had to renounce his right to the throne because she was divorced AND Catholic. He is still a member of the royal family, but you will not see his name on the succession list.
Technically, you are correct. How can William abdicate if he doesn’t have the official title and position to abdicate from? But, as I explained above, William and Harry can remove themselves from “the line” ( not technically abdicating) any time they want by renouncing their right to the throne or marrying some considered “unsuitable”. So can Beatrice and Eugenie and Edward’s young children, for that matter.
Public vs Private. As second in line to the throne, Mel is correct that William and Katie will have a big public ceremony. It is part of his duty as future king, Waity is suitable, he is not renouncing his right to the throne, and despite the hard economic times, it’s fabulous PR!
Stronzilla @31- Boy howdy, do you and I think alike. EXACTLY. Diana was used as a broodmare and then cast aside when she didn’t accept her husband’s mistress and was made to feel like SHE was the crazy one. BTW, the “adorable”, late Queen Mother, the nation’s granny, encouraged her grandson to keep his mistress. Couldn’t understand why Diana didn’t just accept her fate! Nasty.
Guess we’ll see how smart Katie Klingon is when William inevitably takes a girlfriend. Is she up to it?
Her death was one of a few that I will always remember where I was when I heard the news. Great old photos, thanks for the memory trip.
Diana forever.
I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news that she died. I actually cried.
I remember when Diana came to NYC and visited the pediatric AIDS ward in Harlem Hospital. She was very gracous and courteous to all the hospital staff and she picked up and hugged the kids that nobody else in her entourage wanted to touch. A very classy lady, and way too good for the snooty assholes she had for in-laws

That is the one thing I will always, love, admire and respect her for, how she would hold and love the lil aids babies that know one else would hug. It was truly beautiful
Ah, still love her! My favorite famous person ever. I got married in ’89 and my engagement looks just like hers–except smaller of course!
I think it was very sweet that William gave Kate his Mum’s engangement ring, and what he said, about including her, as she can’t be there. That tells me, he really loved his Mother.
I’ll never forget when Charles and Diana announced their engagment in front of all the press, and one of the questions to Charles, was, if he loved Diana. He said something like, “Whatever love is,” I felt so bad for Diana at that moment, it was a very telling thing to say, and in light of what was to come, was really a major clue of his feelings for her.
It’s very sad Diana is gone, and can’t be here to see her son married. Diana was so generous and loving, I hope her children have inherited that side of her.
She looks pretty enough to be in a Human League video. “Don’t you want me, oh, oh ,Oh!”
I remember staying up all night watching shows about Diana and the royals and watching the ceremony that AM. I was hooked, what a giving and kind lady. I was so sad when she died. My hope is that Wils will treat his wife with more love and respect than was shown his mom. Diana deserved it and Kate does too.
Camilla is an old boot. Kate is a bit plain and characterless, Diana really was the whole ball of wax. Her likes won´t be seen again, she was the Grace Kelly/ Marilyn Monroe, an icon of the United Kingdom.
