Gwyneth Paltrow was the very special guest on Glee this week. She played a substitute teacher when Mr. Schue got sick with the flu. At first it seemed like the entire show was an excuse to showcase Gwynnie’s superiority, from her skill in Spanish pronunciation, to her singing and dancing skills, to how “hip” she was with the younger generation. There was plenty of that going on, and her constant preening got to be a little annoying despite how good she was. The show and Goop redeemed themselves toward the end, when her character’s vulnerabilities came out and she in turn seemed more human too. The Goop is a good actress when she gets out of her own way. Here’s a recap from The Stir, which just loved Goop. Most of the reviews I’ve seen are similarly very positive about Gwyneth’s turn on Glee, with EW and The NY Daily News raving about her, and BuddyTV a little more neutral.
It’s the Gwyneth Paltrow episode, finally! Of course, though we’ve all been frothing at the mouth for this day, Glee has upped the ante by promising a wedding next week. And Carol Burnett! Maybe I’m the only one excited about that. But still! But wait, we’re on this week’s shizz. Here goes.
Shue gets the flu. His horrible ex comes by to take care of him, but he throws her out when she declares her love for him with a Vaseline-covered anal thermometer in her hand. She woos him throughout the episode, revealing she’s on meds and continuously remembering all the little things he loves. Dirty little trick.
Meanwhile, who’s in charge of Glee Club? The same substitute who’s a hit covering his Spanish class … Holly Holliday, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. (Oh my, she says she’s the cure for the common class… is that a Mad Men reference?)
Does this count as Musical Number #1? We see how beloved Holly is when we see that she sang “Conjunction Junction” when she was covering an English class.
She immediately wins over
Vocal AdrenalineNew Directions by asking them what they want to sing, then grants Puck’s finest desire (while he checks out her butt) by singing Musical Number #2, Cee-Lo’s “Forget You” (we all know what the real words to “Forget You” are). Everybody kills it. The Cheerios sparkle, Finn almost looks animated, and Rachel’s furious! Hooray!Musical Number #3 is an amazing dream sequence: inspired by the “Singin in the Rain” DVD Terry left for him to comfort-watch, dream-Shue and dream-Mike-Chang do “Make ‘Em Laugh.” Gorgeous and fun, though nothing beats the original. He wakes to Rachel tattling on the fun substitute.
Musical Number #4 is Holly’s way to woo the only member of Glee Club resistant to her charms, Rachel, by pairing with her to let her do her must-desired number,
“All That Jazz” from Cabaret“Nowadays” from Chicago. It’s terrific! Rachel is too sparkling to be annoying, and Gwyneth is charming. I’m bothered, though, that their names don’t appear in the lights after they machine-gun them like in the movie.Did I mention Sue Sylvester has replaced the principal in a coup d’etat? Shue tries to return to school, but Sue has been hard at work. She’s had the principal fired; she’s fired Shue and sends him packing. She takes tater tots off the school menu, inspiring a coup.
But Holly realizes she’s in over her head when Mercedes gets in trouble for shoving tots up the tailpipe of Sue’s LeCar. Holly tearfully turns up at Shue’s place and bemoans the way she didn’t know what to do in the face of crisis. Terry storms in and goes all “OMG, I’m his wife!” (and btw, they totally did it) and Shue sends her packing.
Sue abruptly gives Shue his job back, after the LeCar/tater tot debacle. The Glee club gives him a hero’s welcome, though they’re bummed that he returns to his tradition of old song choices with a song from “Singin’ in the Rain.” He calls in Holly to make “it more relevant,”and they close the episode with Musical Number #5, a mash-up of “Singin’ in the Rain” with Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” It’s visually stunning, but the mash-up doesn’t work for me. But honestly, it’s too fabulous across the board, so giant thumbs up for Gwyneth on Glee. Gleeneth

Gwyneth was good, but I just got the feeling that Glee was pandering to her like they did to Britney. It was all about making musical numbers to suit the guest talent, instead of focusing on the kids. Glee is best when the kids shine, like on last week’s Never Been Kissed. I know they rely on celebrity appearances for publicity, but they could do without the stunt casting.
Ironic line of the week from Goop: “It’s a terrible economy and good teaching jobs are hard enough to get, let alone in the arts… I can’t turn this opportunity down.”
Favorite putdown. Goop: “I’m Holly Holiday”
Will’s ex wife “Are you a porn star or a drag queen?”
You can watch this episode of Glee on Hulu if you’re in the US.
Ok, I really dislike Gwyneth, BUT I love last nights episode!!! It was great.
She did a great job, she is a good singer.
loved it, Gwyn rocked it w/ humor and musicality! ‘umbrella/singing in the rain’ mashup was inspired and fun!
She was great on it! The episode overall sucked because there was no real development with the kids but for what they gave her, she did real good.
My fave part was when Sue tells her that Berets aren’t in style anymore.
Very weak
Dorothy and I are of the same opinion. Cannot STAND this woman, but last nights episode was fantastic! The tots up the lecar tailpipe? GENIUS!
She was SO good! I really hope she comes back again.
…McKinley’s Glee Club is New Directions NOT Vocal Adrenaline…..
she’s want as bad as i thought she would be. i’m downloading singing in rain/under my umbrella that was a cool mashup
I thought it was great.
I think it’s a clever idea to put celebs on, but the producers should be careful about loading this show with guest stars. This show grew it’s audience with the original cast doing a great job on their own.
It was good episode. I am just tired of the show refusing to have a storyline with dialog.
It has turned into seeing how many songs they can cram into the hour.
Which is really 40 minutes without the commercials. So it leaves very little time to have a legit storyline.
So what once was a great thing about the show… great random music…. now is just annoying me.
NOT a Gwyneth fan, but she was very good. The only number that made absolutely no sense in the show was “Make Them Laugh” and Gwyneth was no where near it. What was the point of that number other than filler?
Lea Michele’s (and Gwyneth’s) dancing on the Chicago number was a little weak. Perhaps that’s why she never made a bigger impact on Broadway.
This show is shit. Gwyneth is great and shouldn’t be wasting her time on vapid crud.
The number that GP & LM did was NOT All That Jazz & is NOT from Cabaret. It was Nowadays and it’s from Chicago. Plus they are New Directions not Vocal Adrenaline. Who wrote this?
Gwyneth rocked it – take that Bosworth!
Very gutsy.
Like a lot of the other commenters, I’ve found Goopy annoying in the past. However, she held her own and was a very refreshing character on Glee. While the storyline may not have developed much, she was a nice complement to the casting, and actually made Rachel and Mr. Shue’s characters more bearable.
@Hautie – SO happy to hear someone say what i was thinking! what happened to the songs guiding the story? the best part of the first season was seeing them combine songs and story to work together. glee has jumped the shark.
I was about to rip on whoever wrote the quote you pulled, but Devon beat me to it.
Gwyneth gets on my last damn nerve but I’ve got to give the girl props for last night. Fishsticks ruled it. I thought she did an awesome job. “My tea kettle is spreadin’ rumors on me!” or something like that. ha. Best line of the night.
hate. this. b###h.
She is a classic beauty! I liked her crooked teeth before she had veneers done. It seems everyone on US tv has them. Is this something most people do there? Just curious. I watch a lot of Europeon movies and the actors teeth arent perfect and you can see the pores in their skin. It’s much more realistic to me….not so perfect and plastic.
I thought she was great. And I loved the homage to “Singin in the Rain”-one of my favorite movies of all time. It was great to see “Make ‘Em Laugh” recreated-and stayed pretty true to the original. Matthew Morrison is so talented.
loved it!
now, for some reason, i feel like eating tater tots
Loved it and loved her!
I kept thinking, “Wow, this would be a great episode without Gwyneth Paltrow!” Notice how they kept the camera off her reactions? She’s okay, but I’d be okay too with an army of coaches, trainers, dieticians, nannies, etc. to mold me into something Glee-worthy. I’ve been pissed ever since she won an Oscar.
I loved it too!!!! I was dreading clicking on the comments (they’re my favourite part of this site) because I thought it’d be full of “jumped the shark” comments but no, only one. Most loved it, as did I!!! Yay!!!!
I don’t need to over-analyze Glee, I suspend belief (mostly the “what is their budget?” thoughts) and just enjoy the entertainment of it. I’d prefer more songs rather than less.
Why would Mercedes not be all over that very cute boy Kurt was going to set her up with? He was so pretty.
The only thing I didn’t like was how short Gwyneth’s skirt was but it was true to that character.
I love all things about Chicago! If/when they finally do All That Jazz, it better blow me away.
Gwyneth is a good actress, but it’s when she’s being the person she’s so pretentious that you can’t help hating her.
“she was like an attractive biggie smalls”. I was laughing so hard. I loved it! GP did an amazing job. She is so adorable and so very talented. I want some tots now too!
I thought the performance was just “ok.” I was surprised that she did not look better. TV showed her wrinkles & flaws much more than magazines and paps.
i’m just wondering how long it takes for Dina to file a lawsuit. How DARE they make fun of her poor little “child”.
I enjoy sneering at the Goop as much as the next gal, but I thought she was great. I’m old and have no idea who Cee-Lo is, but I loved the song, even with the word change. (I actually would probably like the Forget You version better, since listening to someone say, “F*** you” over and over would irritate me.)
Let’s just say she totally showed her age and the fact that she isn’t a good dancer b/c she has that “old white rich man dancing” syndrome.
Her acting wasn’t good either. Her hair looked like it was falling out, weave? But I clearly saw her scalp in one shot.
She was just bad bad bad. The part wasn’t for her. Well maybe if she was younger, but her old ass isn’t cute anymore. Well I hate to say it but maybe she’s pretty for her age, but not for that show. She looked tired!!!!!!!!!!!!
but most drunks age bad so who knows . . .
I’m not crazy about her, but am surprised her singing is pretty damn good.
@Liz: keep the comments blunt girl! <3
I wondered about the Lindsay Lohan stuff too. She’s so sue-happy (not Cheerios Sue) maybe they got prior permission.
Auto-corrected singing-check
Horrific mashup of that hideous Rhianna song/Singing in the Rain-check
Pretentious Goopy-check.
The rest was pretty good, though.
Her spanish is really good!! She has a spanish accent! I did like the show.
I am not a Gwyneth fan, but I thought she was good and it was an entertaining episode. It was uneven like Glee always is, of course. But it was funny. Did anyone else think Goopy looked sort of tired and old in it though? I kept feeling like they did a bad job of lighting her. I thought she looked better in recent pics of her at the CMAs, for example.
Loved Gwyn! She did a great job and was so funny.
Liked it. For the people bitching about her looking old and wrinkly, I appreciated them not doing her hair and makeup to perfection, letting her look more like a real substitute teacher would look (if she were Gwenyth Paltrow, haha). It was a smart choice, and I have a feeling that if they’d gone the other way and glitzed her out movie star style, her appearance on the show would have gotten a lot of hate.
@Skibunny- U.S. television and movie actors and actresses seem to have all gone to veneers and capped teeth some years ago. Now the American audience is so used to it, so many people here can’t bear to see anything resembling real teeth, real wrinkles and aging represented onscreen, imo, as evidenced by the ageist, snipey comments you often see here. I hope the trend doesn’t spread to other countries’ entertainment; I really like seeing real people acting at full capacity, with their expressions intact.
Am I the only one that thought her singing SUCKED!!!! I thought she sounded horrible, and if that’s the best they could edit it to be, imagine what she would sound like with no computer to fix it up? I fast forwarded through most of her songs because they were awful. And I HATE Mr. Shue too, he’s so annoying and seems so high on himself. This show annoys me.
I’m not a fan of The Goop, but she wasn’t horrible and the show was okay. She was energetic and seemed like she was really into it too.
It was still a pretty pointless episode though, unless they’re going to have her as a potential love interest for Mr. Schue.
That Make Them Laugh number with Mr.Schue and Mike Chang was cringeworthy.
Loved watching Kurt and Mercedes and the changing dynamic of their relationship.
She was…ok…she’s no dancer, but her singing was passable.
The Chicago number was atrocious.
I did like that they didn’t glam her up.
Musically, apart from Matthew Morrison’s singing & dancing, the closing number was all kinds of wrong. Visually, though, I loved it.
Ooo, she Gooped all over Glee! 😀
(Sorry, couldn’t help myself!)
I’ll give her credit for always trying, despite the backlash.
Gleeks, forgive me, but while I enjoy the show and the singing & dancing and the small musical numbers (because this IS what the show’s about!), a part of me does wish it had more spoken dialogue as part of the storyline … hm, maybe I should just watch another show, hey? 😉
@jemshoes, i just wish they would stop stunt casting and just tell the story. i love the music-but every time they have a guest star or themed episode, you lose what made glee so loveable in the first place
She has a decent voice and for the most part was OK in the role. I don’t think she’s a very natural dancer though, the stuff she did was pretty simple and she occasionally looked a bit awkward. I liked her Mary Todd Lincoln, but the Spanish stuff made me roll my eyes because it seemed like typical pretentious Goop.
I forwarded through Schue’s Make Them Laugh song, didn’t like that at all. His character really bugs me.
This show went off the rails story-wise ages ago. I try to just watch and enjoy the music, but I wish they’d pull it together because they have the potential.
Leave Goopy alone… she ROCKED IT! on Glee..
I do dislike the Goop, but I have to say, she wasn’t diabolical (apart from that Spanish lesson thing – the hell?)
But am I the only one who thought she sounded like a less talented Kurt (Chris Colfer)? When I first heard the song, without video, and heard her voiceover, I was kept thinking, what the hell happened to Kurt?
Best line of the night was Kurt’s – “You look homeless Brett, homeless” 😆
I guess I’m in the minority here. I didn’t like this episode very much. Paltrow was very good and likeable in the “Forget You” scene, but her other songs were terrible, IMO. She has a decent voice, although very limited in range, but her dancing was just strange and awkward to me. There were times throughout where I felt she was trying way too hard to be funny and I found it distracting.
Hubby & I loved Gwyneth on Glee! Her singing was good, but I honestly just thought her character was hilarious and refreshing.
I didn’t really care for the “Make ’em Laugh” number, but I think it’s because I love “Singing In The Rain” and that was a poor, poor, poor imitation/homage. It felt like filler, although I guess it did serve the purpose of tying in the end number a bit.
