Ryan Gosling talks about guzzling melted Haagen Dazs, being “fat & unemployed”

Maybe this is why Ryan Gosling didn’t show up for the All Good Things premiere? Eh. Gosling took part in a round-table discussion of potential Oscar nominees, sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Tonight. ET excerpted the part of the discussion where Gosling talked in great detail about his firing/withdrawal from The Lovely Bones, an incident which happened a few years ago. Gosling was one of the first ones cast for the project – he was supposed to play the father of the murdered girl, in the film adaptation directed by Peter Jackson. Gosling describes how he was just flat out wrong about the character, thinking that the father should be much, much heavier:

Ryan Gosling said he was “fat and unemployed” after showing up on set of ‘The Lovely Bones’ 60 pounds bigger.

During a round table conversation put on by The Hollywood Reporter that included a number of other Oscar Award hopefuls, Ryan said he and ‘The Lovely Bones’ director Peter Jackson had “wildly different” ideas as to what the character of Jack Salmon (that was eventually played by Mark Wahlberg) was to look and act like. “I was 150 pounds when he hired me, and I showed up on set 210 pounds,” he disclosed.

“I really believed [the character] should be 210 pounds. I was melting Haagen Dazs and drinking it when I was thirsty,” he admitted. “I really believed in it. I was excited about it.”

Ryan said when he got on set, he was asked to hit the treadmill. “I just showed up on set and I’d gotten it wrong. … It didn’t ever become about the weight because the weight was just indicative of a deeper misunderstanding about the character.”

The actor seems to have bounced back from the “misunderstanding” as his role in ‘Blue Valentine’ is getting a bit of Oscar buzz.

Melting Haagen Dazs? Sweet Jesus. Why does that sound so good to me right now? Oh, right, I’m sick. I want to take baths in ice cream and egg drop soup (in no particular order). CB also showed me this – Jared Leto did the same drinking-ice-cream thing when he was trying to gain weight.

You know what’s weird? I read the book, and in no way is the father supposed to be a heavy man. He’s also not supposed to be blonde – he’s black Irish, if I remember correctly, and he’s supposed to be a good-looking man. Maybe Mark Wahlberg was the right choice. Here’s the video from the round-table discussion:

Why does this guy bore me so?

  2. fabgrrl says:

I smell BS. An actor would go through dramatic body alternation “for a role” without first consulting the director? Sounds like an excuse. Also, nothing against Hagen Dazs, but why do actors eat so poorly when trying to gain weight? Like Matt Damon and his daily McDonald’s. If I had to gain weight quickly, and had movie star money, I would be dining out every night, ordering appetizers and dessert, adding cheese and butter to everything, drinking gallons of fine wine.

Hot damn! Hot guy Friday came early this week! Fat, thin, I lurves him.

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL The video starts all by itself which totally didn’t scare the hell out of me or anything. 😛

Why on earth would cast cast him to play the father in the first place? He isn’t even in his 30s yet. I am glad he wasn’t in that movie. I didn’t like that movie very much. Damn he looks so yummy in that gray suit.

    SPOILER ALERT:
I hated that the killer got away. I hate that her parents would never find her body. He hurt so many girls and all he gets is a slip and fall down a hill. He deserved more than that. I know a lot of cases are like that but I hated it.

  5. carrie says:

@love angelina: totally agree with you on the movie and if Wahlberg was a miscast for me,Gosling may be a worse miscasting

  6. Kitten says:

Ha ha..this is so funny. Poor Ryan. I don’t remember seeing the pics of him so fat. He doesn’t look so good though! He’s still one of my favorites…

  7. Rachel says:

Regardless of how heavy the man was supposed to be, who’s going to believe that Ryan Gosling was old enough to have fathered a teenage girl?!

  8. dayjolie says:

He probably thought putting on more weight would make him look older.

  9. ela says:

    OK actor but butterface.

  10. clorismetchum says:

fat or not, i’d still sit on his face for days.

  11. Obvious says:

Love him. I was disappointed the movie didn’t follow the book more closely. I know it was an adaptation, but still….nothing i worse the then Ella Enchanted adaptation though.

  12. Ron says:

I too thought Mark Wahlberg was the weak link in that movie. he just did not have the emotional gravitas to carry that role. It seemed like he was “acting”. Ryan gosling isn;t right either. Loved Susan Sarandon as the Grandmother. Reminded me of a next door neighbor of ours in the 70’s who ran around with big set hair and caftans 🙂

  13. Bella Bella says:

150 or 210– I’d take him either way as long as he is still funny and singing those bizarre heartbreaking songs. love.

  14. Bodhi says:

I thought the killer dies when an icicle falls on him… Its been awhile since I read the book tho…

Fat or thin, I’d be all over Gosling like white on rice…

  15. ziggy says:

#14, i agree with you!! this man is FINE!!!!

  16. Ruffian9 says:

Damn he looks fine in that suit. I’m thinking it worked out just fine for Ryan, The Lovely Bones tanked….

  17. devilgirl says:

Oh, I see the sex starved troll is at it again today.

  18. Samigirl says:

oi. Ryan Gosling is my “forever dong” as you are so fond of saying, Kaiser. He just get’s better with age 🙂

  19. Zzzzzzzzzz says:

I used to really dig this guy. Now, not so much. 🙁

  20. Shy says:

So… They hired him. And then he didn’t ask and didn’t worn anyone and decided that he is smarter then director and knows better how to play the character? It was very unprofessional.

I still like him of course. But it was very unprofessional.

And as a look at all those actors and i can’t imagine Justin Timberlake among them. Of course he can bring his asss there (on those kind of meetings). But it would look ridiculous if he would wear his “smart glasses” and would sit there with his “smart face” discussing movies 🙂

  21. original kate says:

yummy, fat or thin. same for mark ruffalo.

  22. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Very Cute.

Still didnt like Mark Wahlberg in it either.. Just didnt feel right..

  23. MadahmGG says:

Not gonna lie the big man with the beard look is HOT!

  24. jackie says:

He is my number one – ALWAYS.

And I am into the chunky guys, more to grab and to handle me like a toy – so I kinda wish he stayed bigger, I love him no matter what!!!!

  25. dahlia47 says:

I just stopped reading his quotes and went back to looking at that top pic. 😉 He’s so hot.

  26. Jeri says:

He probably gets tired of being the “pretty boy.”

  27. weslyn says:

i just saw “All Good Things” with him and Kirsten Dunst and it was really, really good

  28. cookie says:

Stanley Tuccis character in the movie looked quite similar to Gosling I thought.
