Spoilers for last episode of Walking Dead
Last night was the season finale of freshman AMC series The Walking Dead, which chronicles the fate of a group of survivors after a zombie apocalypse. The show only had six episodes in this first season and the last one, although still very dramatic, seemed shaky to me and over done. I’m still a fan of this series and will watch it with interest whenever it comes back (some estimates have it on hiatus until October, 2011) but I’m not as hooked as I was in the beginning. Here’s a good recap from Hollywood Hills, which gives us the essentials:
“The Walking Dead”… opened with a flashback between Shane and Rick. It recounted how Rick was both abandoned in the hospital and why Shane thought his friend and partner was dead. Shane isn’t a bad guy (which I hope we all realize). It’s just that what’s going on around him has turned him into a live wire. The flashback proves Shane did all he could to rescue Rick from the hospital. He at least kept the dead out of his room by barricading it with a hospital bed.
Cut back to modern day. The group of survivors are inside the Center for Disease Control and appear to be the safest they’ve been since the outbreak. Dr. Jenner says they can come in as long as they submit to a blood test. They agree. He also warns them that once the doors close they won’t reopen. They don’t question this.
The group isn’t happy to find that Dr. Jenner is the only person left at the CDC. But they are happy there’s food, hot water and general safety. But something still isn’t right. He’s not telling them much. Everyone gets drunk to forget their worries. A drunken Shane nearly rapes Lori. But she scratches him and he leaves.
The following morning at breakfast, they demand some answers from Jenner. He takes them to where all the CDC magic happens, queues up the computer and gives them a lesson. He shows them what happens to a person who is infected through death and resurrection. He also lets them in on the fact that he’s failed, has no idea what the disease is and there likely isn’t any cure anywhere. Or maybe no one else but them for that matter.
Then someone notices a countdown clock and Jenner tells them that’s when the generator power runs out. He won’t tell them what that means exactly. Rick asks the computer. “She” informs them that once the power runs out the CDC will undergo complete decontamination. Which they soon learn means the entire building will be blown up by explosives almost as powerful as a nuclear weapon.
Jenner kind of flips out a bit and locks them all in there with him. Playing God, he informs them they’re stuck and they’re better off to stay in there with him and meet a quick and painless death. The alternative doesn’t sound much better, but they’re not ready to give up. Well, most of them. Jenner does finally let them free but Andrea and Jacqui decide to stay and meet their deaths. Dale convinces Anderea to go just in time.
Everyone who wants to be outside is just as the clock is running out. Then the CDC explodes. I won’t complain about how fake and disappointing the graphics were here because I liked the episode. So the survivors get into their vehicles and take off. Who knows where they end up and what next season holds.

Here’s what bothered me about this episode. Of course most of the group got out of the CDC before the explosion and of course Andrea and Dale were fine despite the fact that they cut it extremely close. And of course all of their vehicles operated without a glitch and were able to drive away even though they were just a few feet away from a detonation that was supposed to be nearly as strong as an atomic bomb. The whole episode was like a lesson that the world would never be the same, that all infrastructure had failed, that no one had any answers or hope and that, as Andrea kept mentioning “there’s nothing left anywhere.” So we saw, in spectacular fashion, the failure of one of the last CDCs on earth, according to Dr. Jenner’s account. The guy had tons of weapons, ammunition and supplies but it never occurred to him until the absolute last minute to inform the group that the building was going to implode. He almost took everyone down with him, women and children included, without giving them the option whether to die or take their chances on the outside. I’ve heard this show compared to Lost, which I never watched, and I’ve also heard many people complain about how frustrating Lost was at times. Now that comparison, I get. I hope that next season’s Walking Dead can get back to the gritty character-driven drama it was at the beginning.
Dale, you suck. We could have gotten rid of Andrea! And why did no one care that Jackie was staying?
I’ve been saying since the first episode that if Shane wasn’t a cop, he’d be a serial rapist. I stand by that assessment.
I’m just glad Glen is okay.
I’ve tried watching this show, and I just can’t. The last time I tried (this last weekend) the first thing I saw was people with saws cutting up bodies (zombies, I assume) and throwing them on a fire. Not my cup of tea.
Now Lost; that I watched. Yes, it got frustrating; yes, they lost me for a season or 2; but yes, they managed to bring me back.
glen is by far my favorite, i wanted andrea to die as well, i hope next season she bites the dust.
i really love this show , but the season finale was a little weak either way i am still excited for season two whenever that may be.
i’m enjoying the show, but i’m a huge fan of the comics, and i just don’t really understand the direction they’ve taken the show. it bears absolutely no resemblance to the comic at all. i understand that tv and print are 2 differnt media, and changes are made, but aside from the main characters, they have absolutely nothing in common. i don’t understand the decisions that were made about the show.
I’ve always loved zombie movies and it’s not surprise I love this series. But I agree Celebitchy. It felt off that the Dr didn’t even bother giving them the option of getting a ton of needed supplies and getting out. It also felt wrong that Jackie was killed off in that manner while they gave Andrea someone who was willing to die with her.
Since this was such a short series and has such a long hiatus, I’m glad they didn’t leave a huge cliffhanger. While I’m curious to see where they go next, the ending tied it together for me and it’ll be nice when it comes back.
I was sorry Jacqui stayed behind; I was hoping to see them develop her from more than just a minor character – she was hardly given any lines at all. And yes, I thought how interesting that the rest were all like “Ok, fine then,” almost immediately after she said she was going to stay behind.
Well, I guess they have to kill off someone.
It was indeed a little far-fetched at times – what with the lady who just happened to have the bomb in her pocket, and all the vehicles working perfectly and none of them coming away from the explosion injured and so on. But I am still a fan and looking forward to next season. I hope they do go back to focusing more on character. Maybe that’s why they fired all the writers.
@ michkabibbles – It’s the same way with True Blood. It doesn’t follow the books to the letter either (you know, “creative freedoms” or whatever they call it), which has frustrated some viewers. However, I still love the show – sometimes more than others, I admit.
I thought it was riveting. My friend and I were talking about it and she now likes Shane again. I told her SOMEONE put that bed in front of Rick’s room, and I am glad it was Shane. Although Shane has so many demons festering inside him, I can’t wait to see how that turns out.
I really liked this episode because I felt a true sense of hopelessness. Jacqui felt it to which is why she stayed. Andrea is grieving and once she is over her grief she will be less dull to watch. I was sorry to see Jacqui go but I am glad Jenner didn’t die alone, the crazy bastard, lol. I loved this episode and its makes me excited for next season because the hopelessness the show had last night only makes me wanna see how far they can make it and what will can stop all the fight in them.
I thought the ending was great – that decision of whether or not to go on and try to rebuild was intense. It took courage, whichever way you went. I love this show and look forward to next season.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW
I love the show and can’t wait for the next season! Although, I was concerned that no one tried to talk Jacqui out of her decision. I guess she didn’t bond with someone the same way Dale bonded with Andrea. You’ll notice he was the only one willing to stay & risk his life for a bluff. Everyone else bolted.
Does anyone else like Daryl? He’s been growing on me! He had one of the best lines of the show last night:
“well I’m going to get shit-faced drunk … again!”
I hope this show comes back as good as it started.
I saw a rerun of Troy this weekend and Rick’s wife looks like the woman that played Eric Bana’s wife in Troy. Sorry I don’t have the names down to check.
I love watching zombie movies since Night of the Living Dead.
complaint#1: where did the pajamas & slippers come from? They are running for their lives and they pack a bathrobe?
complaint#2: the characters aren’t that well developed to start caring who dies. I watch every week and I don’t know most of their names. No back stories.
complaint#3: atomic blast and all you have to do is put on a seat belt? Hmm.
complaint#4: too many families. in such a small group of survivors, how many intact family units is realistic? Everyone is here except Grandma!
biggest complaint: Without more scary zombie action, the show is just another end of days/survivor show. I want more zombies!
Yes. No matter how much we love that idea and that show you always sense that something is missing. And there should be a lot more running from zombies. That is always the best part of zombie movies. When our heroes run away from bloody zombies.
And am i the only one who cared for Doctor? I liked how actor played him. And for the last second i hoped that he will change his mind and will run too. Rest in Peace Doc.
And i do like Shane too. I don’t want him to be bad and antihero. But come on. It’s not like it’s some super love. Like Romeo and Juliet. She is your friend’s wife. Let it go.
And I begin to worry. They kill off main characters too often. If they are gonna kill them each episode then they will turn out like Prison Brake. I stopped caring about that show on that moment when they killed Lane Garrison’s character. I begin to fear and worry that next time they will kill the black guy and grey haired woman from Mist (and her daughter). And then probably Glen. Or Andrea.
And the plot holes and nonsense was a little too much in this episode. Especially the last blow. No way they would survive that blow up. And i burst in laugh when even their glass on car stayed unharmed. And why the hell zombies just lie down when they begin to shoot them and the explosion came? They would all stood up and chaise our heroes.
And it was fun when after shower Lori came to that room with books and Carol says: “Ok kids. Time to go sleep”. And her daughter and Carl stood up and went out of the room and Lori stood there like: “Whatever. Go”. Shouldn’t she and any other normal mother hug her son, kiss him and say: “Sleep well”? because she stood up there like it’ some other kid.
The Doctor character was a welcome addition because we finally saw some good acting and interesting dialogue. They killed him too quick! Damn! Still plagued with ridiculous scenarios and bad dialogue and marginal acting, but at least there will be all new writers for Season Two.
I’ll have to go back and watch it again. I didn’t catch the part where the explosion was supposed to be like an atomic bomb..just that it was a two part explosive. Something about catching the air on fire.
Anyway, the ending was kinda meh. Was there really any doubt that most would survive?
I wanna know what the dr whispered in the Sheriff’s ear right before they all left! What could he have possibly been telling him?! I think that is what the next season will be centered around. I think he told him that they aren’t the only survivors and where to find the others. The dr was heartbroken and grief stricken and was just using the supposed end of the world as an excuse to kill himself. Cause for him, with his wife gone and his work gone and/or useless, the world was gone.
I can’t wait for Season 2:)
I was pretty disappointed as well. I thought it would go out with a bigger bang, so to speak – and I don’t mean special effects.
I’m hoping that the doc whispered something about Shane’s attack on Lori. Maybe he saw it through security cameras or something. I’m tired of having it hinted at and poor Rick being clueless. Didn’t the rest of the group know they were boffing before daddy turned up? Stop pussyfooting around.
That blast should have done a lot more damage if it was near nuclear. And I hated how they had a few walkers waiting outside the door, but you see absolutely no one as the people leave the city. It had a lot of potential that it didn’t live up to. I realize it was only one season (of 6 eps, natch), but with the news of them firing everyone and waiting a year to come back on the air, I think they’re going to lose too much steam and possibly too many viewers.
The doctor whispered in Ricks ear that the blood test he gave Lori says shes pregnant. And you know its Shanes kid.
