Amy Adams’ cheesy Christmas

amyadams5
Actress Amy Adams has a new interview and Christmas photo spread with Parade Magazine. I love Amy and enjoy reading her interviews, but I have to say that her holiday photos are super cheesy. It’s like they’re channeling her Enchanted persona for Christmas. You get the impression that she’s somewhat like that, though, and that this photoshoot is closer to her real personality than any sexy half-dressed generic starlet spread.

Most outlets are pointing out that Amy is saying she’s not in a hurry to lose the weight she gained while she was pregnant. She’s filled out a little, sure, but I barely see the weight on her. You can tell that she’s not stick thin, but that’s about it. In Parade, Adams also talks about her relationship with her fiance, how they work out their differences and co-parent their daughter Aviana, 7 months.

Adams is promoting her role in The Fighter, alongside Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it earns her another Oscar nomination.

On the holidays
“There was always a lot of energy around my house during the holidays growing up–a lot of food, a lot of football. The whole season has a magical feeling for me that I don’t think ever goes away,” says this middle child of seven kids, who grew up mostly in Colorado and whose parents split when she was 11. As she does every December, she’ll call her dad to get the recipe for the family’s traditional Banana Ice (a frozen whipped concoction featuring bananas, orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, ice, and Sprite or 7-Up). This year, she’s also looking forward to starting some new traditions: “Just little things, like a certain candy in a certain dish,” she says. “I find that it’s the simple things that remind you of family around the holidays.”

How she realized she was pregnant
Adams realized she was starting her own family one morning when she tugged at her refrigerator door. “I saw almond milk in the fridge–Darren drinks it, but I’d never tasted it–and it triggered an animal response,” she recalls. “I was like, ‘I need that,’ and I drank the entire carton in 10 minutes. I looked at Darren and said, ‘I think…yeah, I’m pregnant.'”

On finding pregnancy liberating
She describes the months that followed as one of the most liberating periods of her life. “Being pregnant finally helped me understand what my true relationship was with my body–meaning that it wasn’t put on this earth to look good in a swimsuit,” she says (though anyone who saw her 2008 pictorial homage to Rita Hayworth in Vanity Fair might disagree). “I was like, ‘Look, I can carry a baby! I’m gaining weight right, everything’s going well.’ And I’ve had that relationship ever since.” Since the birth, she adds, “I’ve been working out when I can, and I’m trying to eat in a healthful way, but losing weight is not my number-one priority. It’s part of my job to return to some semblance of what I was before. But I don’t feel I’ve ever made my career on my rockin’ bod.”

On toning up for her role
The role [in The Fighter] required Adams to wear short shorts and a crop top for the bar scenes and lingerie in the bedroom with Wahlberg. “David said, ‘This is kind of how we see her dressing,'” she recalls, “And I said, ‘I’m getting in a gym, ’cause there’s no way I’m going to end up not looking my best.'” But Russell KO’d that impulse, telling her he didn’t want her to look like an actress who’d gotten in shape for a role. “He said, ‘I want you to look like a girl who drinks beer,'” the actress recalls with a laugh.

On her relationship with her fiance
Le Gallo [Adams’ fiance] has also turned out to be “a great swaddler” and helpmate in managing the work/parenting balancing act. The couple, who met in acting class, have been together nine years, but the birth of their daughter has deepened their relationship, Adams says. “Now we understand the importance of teamwork. And if we have a disagreement, we work toward a solution.” They have a policy of never spending more than two weeks apart. For example, when Adams went to New Orleans in August to film an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, Le Gallo and Aviana joined her for the 11-day shoot. At home in Los Angeles, they share baby night-shift duties and have a dinner date once a week. As for a wedding, she says it’s going to happen but isn’t sure exactly when–she hasn’t been able to wrap her head around the planning process.

Mostly, Adams says, she’s been learning to focus on the moment and not be too hard on herself. “The best advice I’ve gotten as a parent is, ‘You’re not gonna be perfect,'” she says with a chuckle at the understatement. “Take today–she’s teething and I want to be in there with her. But I also want to do a good job here for everybody who worked on the film.”

She pushes back a lock of her naturally strawberry-blond hair. “I actually love my work more now, ’cause I feel if I’m going to be away from her, I’d better enjoy it. I’m trying to be more present in each moment of my life. She’s taught me that.”

[From Parade]

Amy doesn’t say anything particularly personal or groundbreaking, but I love to cover her because she’s just so damn normal. Plus we never hear from her unless she has a film to promote and that’s refreshing. Parade also has a recipe from Amy for “guilt free” pumpkin pie with Splenda. I hate Splenda because my son is allergic to it. Regular sugar (or Stevia) has to be much healthier than anything that gives people rashes. Regular sugar also goes along with the whole theme Amy stresses in this interview. She says that her family’s signature holiday drink involves 7-up and that she’s putting out candy in a specific dish to create a tradition. And she’s not pushing herself to lose weight. So let’s see a recipe with real sugar and butter! It feels good to have something minor to criticize her about.

Photos and video are from Parade, which has more photos from Amy’s shoot.

omg those photos. saccharine. is that supposed to be satirical? if not, gag.

  2. Rita says:

“Cheesy” is an understatement. Fondoo heaven is more like it.

Yeah, the Parade thingy didn’t work for me either but I do hope mother Kaiser enjoyed it.

  3. Kaiser says:

Rita – I know, right? I think I’m going to have to take my mom to The Fighter, just because of Princess Cinderella.

  4. Moops says:

To me, the real Amy will always be Giselle (from Enchanted) or Delysia Lafosse (from Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day). She plays sweet n’ cheesy so convincingly, that it must be a significant part of her.

  5. Delta Juliet says:

She is adorable. But that green dress is just awful.

  6. mln76 says:

I loved her in Junebug, nothing can top that performance for me, but I think the pics are a bit much.

  7. Celebitchy says:

Sorry I forgot to give a shout out to your mom, Kaiser! There was a major spoiler for Junebug in this article, which kind of upset me as I’ve never seen it and eventually wanted to. I took that out of the quoted text.

  8. OtherChris says:

It’s hard to believe she’s in her mid-30s. She looks really, really young. When I saw Enchanted I thought it was kind of creepy that they paired her with McDreamy until I found out how old she is.

  9. lucy2 says:

Cheesy photos, but she’s so likable, I don’t care. I too like that when she’s not promoting a movie, you almost never see her. Smart, I think.
    Splenda gives me major headaches.

  10. Kaiser says:

My fave of hers is Miss Pettigrew as well. She and Frances McDormand are AMAZING in that.

  11. WhiteNoise says:

They are parody cheesy not cheesy cheesy. I love them!

  12. redlips says:

I saw The Fighter Saturday, and it was excellent! Amy gives one fantastic performance. So totally opposite from all the other roles she has played. Wahlberg is also amazing and very easy on the eyes…..great movie!

  13. sapphire says:

She looks great, no need to lose anything.

  14. Majosha says:

@redlips: Agreed. It was a fantastic movie with outstanding performances all around. Melissa Leo is a national tresure, imo, and Christian Bale not only lives up to the hype, he blows it out of the water.

  15. gloaming says:

I seem to remember reading somewhere that her Fiancé works for TMZ, don’t know if it’s true or not, but it seems like a bit of an odd pairing if it is.
Anyway, note to self- *must watch Junebug*

  16. chasingadalia says:

I don’t touch fake sugars – they aggravate my neuropathy. Haven’t tried that Stevia stuff yet…hmm…

Maybe someone in her family is diabetic so she’s used to using Splenda? *shrug*

  17. Mizz Tickles says:

    I love the green dress!

  18. Twez says:

It’s Parade magazine… the Sunday supplement insert thingie, right? If they did anything but saccharin-sweetened cheese, grannies across America would be upset.

(The almond milk equals pregnant story amused me because I’ve had friends who wouldn’t touch soy milk to throw it away become pregnant only to chug it from the carton.)

  19. Hakura says:

Ugh, I can’t stand the facial expressions. You can tell she’s trying to be cute/funny, but it just comes off as ‘the lights are on, but no one’s home.”

Like someone drank the kool-aid xD Just creeps me out. Not a good thing.

  20. Courtney says:

it’s her brother that works for TMZ not her fiance who is an actor/artist. with the almond milk craving while she was pregnant maybe she needed protein and being a vegan didn’t want to reneg on that and eat meat. it’s not like she gained crazy weight while she was pregnnat and your supposed to keep 5-10lbs after the baby for breastfeeding purposes and she does/did nurse Aviana for the first six months and pumped for nighttime feedings so Darren her fiance could help out and let her sleep. the pictures aren’t cheesy at all she’s excited about her daughters first christmas and that shows in the photos

  21. LBees says:

Does she look like a young Nicole Kidman in that first shot or what?

I didn’t read the comments but let’s go through it again: she’s not fat, women should breast feed, and probably something thrown in about the expectations of breast feeding.

  22. padiddle says:

Splenda makes a 50/50 Splenda sugar blend that I use in baking all the time – I like it because it reduces calories but still tastes like real sugar.
    Maybe Amy uses the same?

  23. Jeri says:

She’s such a good actress she just snuck into being one of my favorites.

  24. Kim says:

Geez I really cant stand this one. Everything she says is so ego centric and contrived.

How pathetic that she had to get pregnant to realize her body wasnt put on this earth to look good in a bathingsuit?!

  25. kitty milk says:

icky – but i luv her movies

  26. JulieM says:

I saw The Fighter this weekend, and trust me, all the hype is justified. Amy is fantastic, but she is one of my all time favorites, so that’s easy for me to say. The rest of the cast was equally amazing; some of the best ensemble acting I’ve seen in a long time. Editing, pace, soundtrack, everything was spot on. Even Marky Mark, not one of my favorites, was quietly effective, if you can believe that of a boxer. Just tattoo Christian Bale’s name to Oscar’s ass. No competition.

  27. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I don’t do Splenda or sweeteners because they make my throat itch and swell (cute, right?) but I can see where sweeteners are a godsend for diabetics. Maybe she has a diabetic in her family?

I think she’s super cute and have loved her since Enchanted. And she just seems so darn normal. She doesn’t get into anything obnoxious. She does her acting work, does promotional duties and then goes about her life.

None of this posturing or humorlessness or acting like being an actor means she’s the authority on stuff.

  28. Louise says:

Twez:Exactly. Parade isn’t Vogue. Of course the shoot was cheesey.

I like Splenda because of the calories. I can’t taste the difference from sugar but I only use in something.

  29. Mairead says:

Adorably cheesy – like a nice St. Killian or Wendsleydale perhaps 😉 – says I! She looks like she’d be a hoot to hang around.

I’ve never seen Enchanted, but I’ve loved her in anything I’ve seen her in, especially Junebug (even though I kept wondering why Isla Fisher looked weird 😆 ) and Mrs. Pettigrew, and to be blunt, i thought she deserved an Oscar nom far more than Meryl for Julie & Julia.

  30. Catherine says:

The last one is adorable. She is just so pretty.

  31. truthzbetta says:

Cute and normal. They’re adorable. It’s the shoulder hunch forward crazy eye pics other celebs front that are lame.

She has baby weight? Unless they shopped it off she’s doing fine in that area.
