The Dark Knight has only been out for a couple of weeks and already buzz is starting on the sequel. It’s sad that Heath Ledger won’t be able to reprise his brilliantly creepy Joker, it looks like director Christopher Nolan is looking to tap another big Hollywood name to play the villain. 60s TV catwoman, Julie Newmar, says that Angelina Jolie would “own the part” and claims that she’s asked about it:
Hollywood beauty ANGELINA JOLIE has been tipped to play CATWOMAN in a future BATMAN movie – by the actress who made the role famous, JULIE NEWMAR.
Newmar, 74, prowled across the small screen, playing the feline villain in the 1960s Batman television series.And she would love Jolie to take on the role – if The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan decides to resurrect the character in a future sequel.
Newmar tells the New York Daily News, “Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me (she) has made inquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman’s one true love. She’s tremendously popular with women because she’s both a heroine and a villainess.”
Since Newmar, the Catwoman role has been played by Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether, Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer.
It would take a brave, fearless actress to pick up Catwoman’s whip after the stinker of a film starring Halle Berry that came out a few years ago. Jolie is the kind of woman who could pull it off, provided the script is good enough and she’s not pregnant again. Personally, I think Catwoman should have been retired after the fabulous Michelle Pfeiffer played the role in “Batman Returns.” I would like to see some new villains on the big screen.

Angelina’s box office pull is not that great. Even wanted did well only in the opening week. It has stalled to only 120mil, which is not much for a summer blockbuster. She has never been a box office queen.

Just a feeling, xiaoecho. Nolan seems to really believe in unconventional casting. Just because everyone is now like “Oh, of course Heath Ledger was PERFECT for The Joker” doesn’t mean they thought that originally. (Two years ago: “That guy from the gay cowboy movie as The Joker? Are you kidding?”)
I guess I’m saying that OF COURSE Jolie is the obvious choice. I truly can’t think of another actress in that age range who could pull off leather, whips and purrs (*fans self*). But Nolan subverts the obvious.

(I picture us in a fancy office overlooking Sunset & Doheny in Hollywood, having an afternoon casting director’s meeting!) She looks very beautiful in black hair, I loved when she had her dark auburn/almost black haircolour. She might be too young still to be Catwoman, though, she’s still more like Catgirl.

Hmm. Angie could own the part and certainly has the attitude and cat-like qualities – but I’m with Kaiser, she’s too much the obvious choice.
Lilo could be interesting, especially as a marmalade cat, it would be a very stark contrast to the dark muted tones in the films – if she had a halfway decent work eithic and you got at the fake tan with a wire brush. 🙄
Eva Green could be interesting – she’s got enough sultriness and a healthy level of bonkers for the part. I’d love someone like Julianne Moore though, I think she’d be fab.
I didn’t think much of the earlier Batman films but I loved Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. But my all time fave is of course Eartha Kitt rrrrow! 😀
Her box office pull is shaky, Wanted opened well but is no longer doing well. Too many block busters you would say but then again she alone never pulls in numbers.
Not many hollywood stars can pull in huge bank on their names alone, these days. Will Smith and, um…. Will Smith is the only one who consistently brings in huge numbers… All the other A-listers I can think of have had at least one flick tank like it was encased in carbonite in the past year.
I think Jolie would be a FABOO! catwoman. She even looks a bit like Julie Newmar. Eva Green is a GREAT choice, too. Maybe Emily Blunt? She’s feisty and catlike….
“Wanted” has done very well, Hollie. It’s made about $250 million worldwide so far, and that’s before DVD rentals and sales. The producers are already talking to McAvoy & Jolie about a sequel.
And Kung Fu Panda and Beowulf were also big hits that made a ton of money. I realize you’re a Hater Hollie, but give it a rest.

@ Daisy…I never really had an opinion about Angelina, I just thought the episode of South Park with the head lice on the crotch was funny. I also think Lola’s funny, because she gets people going and the threads are more interesting to read. Lilo’s too young, I think. Cat woman is a WOMAN, baby! She has to know who she is and be solid. I think they’re a bit too old, but I’d love to see Holly Hunter, Katherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Tilley, etc. people who can bring a sense of humor and depth to it as only a grown woman can.
Although she’d be great, I agree with Kaiser, Jolie is a little too pat for this part.

I am all for Ms Jolie’s sexiness and all that. And as a man, I don’t mind seeing her in the tight black suit. but I doubt if she will get the part.
For the first time, I think Kaiser, Ms Jolie’s hard-core fan, makes sense. Nolan likes unconventional cast. He often goes for the less famous and less predictable actors. He also likes to work with the same people all the times.
The success with Michelle Pheifer’s Catwoman is because she successfully portray the catwoman as a woman, not a pure villain.
I am not a big fan of Ms Jolie’s acting. Although she kicks asses in most of her films, that’s all she can do — kick asses.
Michelle Pfeiffer was the best catwoman, Michael Keaton was the best batman, and Jack Nicholson was the best joker. (Danny Devito was a perfect penguin because he really looks like one) The others (Poison Ivy, Riddler, and the ice whatever Aaaahhhhnold played, meh) I understand they cant bring them back (Keaton said no a while ago, plus they are a little on the older side) but no one can replace them. I cant see anyone else playing. I know this newest one did really fantastically well…but secretly we all know the only reason it did… 😳

Kate Beckinsale – No, period. She’s about as uninspiring, unsexy, non-feline, non-athletic and generally pretty-but-forgettable as A-lister actresses go.
Holly Hunter – I adore Holly Hunter, but she’s so, so not Catwomanish, not at all. Amazing actress, just not suited for this particular role.
Gina Gershon – what?! Are you guys high? Not only is she a good ten years past her sexy prime, but she’s not – she doesn’t have “it,” and for some reason I can’t pin down the woman annoys me. She didn’t used to, but nowadays she does.
Catherine Zita-Jones – Absolutely gorgeous woman, and can be a great actress within the right roles/under the right director but she, also, has past her springy prime.
Jennifer Tilly – See Catherine Zeta-Jones & Gina Gershon. No way is Tilly a cat. I do like Jennifer Tilly, but – again, past her prime (although she looks amazing for her age,) and just not lithe and feline enough.
Lindsay Lohan – Xiaoecho, you’ve got a terrific idea, to create her role as a tortoiseshell/marmalade cat, a red-headed Catwoman, freckles and all – that actually sounds very, very cool. But, and I can’t believe I’m saying this now, ’cause I do love LiLo, but I kind of feel that she really hasn’t matured enough in her art, in her acting, to be believeable as a Cat WOMAN, not yet. I give her at least 5 more years.
My favourite Catwoman so far has been Michelle Pfeiffer, although to be fair to the great Julie Newmar I have not seen the original Batman film with her as Catwoman. The next Catwoman should be Angelina Jolie. Look how she handled that kind of action in Tomb Raider Mr & Mrs Smith, and then look how she pulls off the sexy, sultry, panther-esque thing with all the guns, karate and so forth – all things Catwoman must be excellent at.
I vote for Angelina, but if she’s gonna keep bearing and adopting children I have no idea where she’ll find the time or energy to prepare for and then go into a four or five month grueling shoot. She, however, IS in her own prime right now, age-wise and career-wise, she’s just right.

I find it funny that everybody thinks that jolie would be a great catwoman. maybe it is because all she ever does are those sexy-kick ass villian roles. think about it, she can’t really act, she just pouts and fires a gun/kicks somebody. Almost always with super-long dark hair, a white tank top and skintight pants. She is so one-dimensional, imo (except for girl, interrupted, which i thought was fantastic).

I understand what you’re getting at, I do. I mean, I love Jolie, but I’ve never claimed she was a phenomenal acting legend. But she’s got all those attributes down pat, and they are ALL what a Catwoman must have, so she comes equipped already. She HAS done some intense work in her day, though, character-wise, there’s Girl, Interrupted, A Mighty Heart, The Good Shepherd, Alexander, even Gia – so she has shown she can do “deep,” not just Lara Croft-y roles.
I am surprised that Cate Blanchet’s name hasn’t been brought up. I can totally see her in catwoman’s rubber suit as well.
Nolan is British. He works a lot with Austrlian actors.
OH!!!! SO right, yes hell yeah, Cate Blanchett I think is an excellent idea, too! Why didn’t I think of her? James, you’re a superb casting agent! Yes, I agree, Blanchett could totally do an awesome Catwoman. She’d have to prepare physically for the role, though, lots of training for all that cat-leaping about.
Gershon has depth, an interesting unconventional face and appeal that I’m not sick of. That’s all.
Here’s my two cents. I would like, if it’s to be done, for Marisa Tomei to give it a shot. I don’t know if that would be good casting but I think she is the total package. Plus I’m tired of Angelina, hermetically sealed in black rubber suit, for our protection, roles.

Let me see, among the films that Angie has done other than the “kick-ass, leather-wearing” movies, are “The Bone Collector”, “Taking Lives”, and my personal favorite, “Playing by Heart”.
The woman is not afraid to as Snowblood said, “do deep”, and test her acting chps. Oh, and lest we forget, “The Changeling” is coming soon.
LiLo could play Poison Ivy, because you can easily imagine plants/fungus sprouting on her.
Do you people not understand the concept behind Nolan’s new Batman movies? Dark, realistic, gritty…. women sprouting plants and Catwoman in a tortie costume are silly and campy ideas, and are not going to happen. “Why does Catwoman have to be dark?” If you’re even asking these questions, you apparently just don’t know anything about the character. YES, Catwoman plays a huge part in Batman’s romantic life in and out of costume. YES, she’s sassy and deadly and leather-clad. She is not “demented” (Pfeiffer’s portrayal was completely wrong), but is very intelligent, rational and walks a very thin line between good and bad, being a thief and heroine at the same time, but isn`t the only woman in his life. Having her as Catgirl with red hair and yellow heels is unimaginable. Most likely they`ll have Talia al Ghul, Ra`s al Ghul`s daughter, appear in the sequel if they want a villian-love interest.
Apologies if I’m coming off as harsh. Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn are my favourite comic characters, but even I can see that they are too fantastic to have in the next Batman movie, and the thought of Angelina Jolie donning a marmalade Catwoman costume makes me wretch.
Besides, the screenwriters have said that there will be no Catwoman appearance in the next movie. That should put this speculation to rest.

I love Kevin’s Marisa Tomei suggestion. One of my most favourite actresses and not doing too much of late, I don’t think. Would love to see someone like her getting an opportunity like this. Such an all-rounder and very very sultry and sexy.

Actually Marisa Tomei would be a very interesting choice.
the director could go all dark and noirish by having catwoman-jolie pregnant with batman’s litter of babies. there would be the turmoil and internal strife of batman facing up to the fact that he not only fell for a villainess, but that she’s pregnant with his baby/babies. also, what kind of a father will he be? what kind of a mother will she be? will they be deformed bat-cats, or normal babies? will they inherit her badness, or his goodness? will there be, gulp, a litter of 8? catwoman could be conflicted about losing her freedom? and will alfred and robin be able to handle diaper duty?
of course there should be a happy ending, where the villainess turns out to be only a naughty girl who moonlights as a crusading charity worker, helping refugees in third world countries. the bat babies should turn out to be happy healthy quadruplets who look completely normal but do have their momma and poppa’s gymnastic flair and abilities. and robin their doting uncle spoils them and encourages their pranks and shenanigans. and alfred feeds them tea and crumpets and glories in his four “grandchildren”. of course catwoman discovers that she loves being a momma, that she feels contented and purrs over her tykes. and batman discovers that he loves being a poppa, and also loves having a mate who understands his dual nature. and they all live happily ever after, crusading for charity by day, and fighting evil by night (except when they’re working on making more bat babies!)

Alas no daisy – they were part of an overall falconry and birds of prey display at an event overthe weekend – it included a number of native (to Ireland) birds such as barn owls (one was being petted and on people’s arms for hours!), a super-fluffy Snow Owl with a really unimpressed face, kestrel, Harris hawks, American redtail and two falcons (Lanner and peregrine)
They’re amazingly full of personality close up

I’m just learning about natural heritage, ( I can barely name three flowers) but I’ve seen a couple flying displays and you learn so much at them. They were an absolute hit at the weekend (the glorious weather also helped with people’s mood)
These one’s are owned by a falconry company so they are partially tame. The barn owl reminded me of a very attention-whorey young cat – loving the attention but would look everywhere but the camera when you wanted him to 😆
Do you need a special permit to have them as pets? Your icon owl, the Bengal Eagle Owl is the prettiest one. Looked him up too, his feathers are beautiful. Have a bit of Irish myself, Hattie Beam was my Great Grandmother’s name.
Yes, you need a licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (I think) to handle some of the birds -those like the barn owl that is a protected species under the EU Birds Directive.

this is a few days after the fact and no one will probably read this but. Please dear god NO please don’t let Angelina be catwoman. I don’t hate her but… if Nolan does another movie and he DID pick catwoman as the villian (i think it’s unlikely) i’d hope he’d pick someone who would redefine the role rather than someone who makes perfect sense aesthetically at least. Heath Ledger was an odd choice for the joker and it worked…

If she ever even considered playing Catwoman, I think i would have to die. She’d be horrible and an insult to Julie Newmar!
Hallie Berry was very good but the movie was pretty bad. Michelle Phipher was plainly hott and wonderful also. But Lohan would be an insult to us all.
I really hope she is infact a Lesbian with her new girlfriend because then maybe she’d get onto the right track.
((And that doesn’t involve attemping to be a whore and seduce Batman.))
Angelina is a good choice. She’s got the right attitude for it, but her face is a little long. She just doesn’t have the feline bone structure/features that Michelle Pfeiffer posessed. Perhaps her eyes, but that’s it.
Michelle was the perfect choice for that role.. Tim Burton did it best. I don’t think anyone right now would be good.
Maybe, Catherine Zeta Jones ?? But, lately she’s been looking a bit worn. Not sure if it’s because of having kids – being married to a geriatric or because she’s almost 10 years older than what she claims. Oh well… jk..lol 😉

I have a suggestion. How about Naomi Watts as Catwoman?? I understand where he is coming from but compare pictures of Naomi Watts and Catwoman (I prefer Michelle Pfiefer personally) next to eachother and hopefully you will all agree.
I LOVED Julie Newmar as Catwoman, and I think Michelle Pfifer did a fantastic job, too. Angelina would probably make a good catwoman. Hopefully she’ll still be acting if she’s ever offered the part! =)
