I used to find Dolly Parton really tacky. But then I matured and realized just how freaking awesome she is, because she embraces her tack. She works it like a drag queen. In fact she’s acknowledged that she looks like a hooker. And she’s fine with it, and has certainly cultivated a unique persona for herself.
Dolly had a few sassy comments about Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan during her concert Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre. And of course she wasn’t above poking fun at herself either.
Dolly Parton says it’s time to leave a couple of the world’s most famous starlets alone. “Poor little Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan,” Parton said at her concert last night at L.A.’s Greek Theatre. “Ain’t it awful? If those little girls slept with as many men as they say in the tabloids, why their little butts would have more fingerprints than the FBI!” All kidding aside, Parton said, “I kinda feel sorry for them. We should give those two a break.”
She even got a bit political—kinda. Some fans wore T-shirts reading, “Dolly for President.”
“I don’t think so!” Parton said of her presidential aspirations. “I think there have been enough boobs in the White House.” Commenting on how times have changed, she said of this year’s presidential race, “We’ve had a woman, we have a black man and an old stiff.” But that’s as serious as she got when it came to current events. “People are always asking me in interviews, ‘What do you think of foreign affairs?’ I just say, ‘I’ve had a few.’ “

I think there’s been some debate over whether or not Dolly comes up with her own quips on the spot. I’d like to imagine that she does, and it best fits with my image of her as a sassy old broad. And I don’t care who wrote it, that “fingerprints on their butts” line is classic. I’m going to see how often I can work that into everyday conversation from now on. And if I ever meet Lindsay or Britney, I’m going to have to ask if it’s true. I’m guessing it’s one of those “behind every joke there’s a little truth” situations.

Seriously, by the time you get to Dolly’s age, what is there to do but laugh at yourself – the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about
Love me some Dolly
One of the things I love about her is that she doesn’t feel the need to give her opinion left, right and centre (like so many other celebs do) about the economy, politics etc (love her foreign affairs remark.) and just sticks to what she’s best at, being herself and throwing out the odd playful barb at those who deserve it. Less is SO more. Class act, love her.
And who cares whether she comes up with her quips on the spot or not, she still comes up with them and her delivery is always brilliant PLUS she’s dynamite in interviews.
Love her!
Love me some Dolly! The voice of an angel.
Right on, Geronimo. I like my celebs for their talent, not their politics. I can’t tell you how many I just can no longer tolerate because of their arrogance and superior attitude! They alienate their fans!
Dolly has never pretended to be anything that she isn’t. Gotta respect that.
She’s got heart, soul and humor all wrapped up in a delightful little package.
I actually quite like it when celebs take up a social cause – we wouldn’t have some of Bob Dylan’s early works otherwise or some of Tom Petty’s wry social commentary. but I agree there’s a way of doing it without being sanctimonious. 😉
That being said – I <3 teh Dolly
Love her.
Love!
It’s easy to see why most people love easy going light hearted celebrities like Dolly Parton and hate gutter mouth trash talking hurtful celebrities like Joan Rivers and Sarah Silverman.
It is actually possible to love Dolly AND Joan.
My favorite Dolly quote is: “My feet are so small because nothing grows in the shade.”
“People are always asking me in interviews, ‘What do you think of foreign affairs?’ I just say, ‘I’ve had a few.’”
😆 😆 I friggen LOVE Dolly!
I love to hear this woman laugh, speak and sing, not necessarily in that order.
Dolly Parton for Pres indeed! 😀
Dolly’s o.k. with me.
“I think there have been enough boobs in the White House.”
Is she priceless or what.
Have been a fan for years, even went to Dollywood in TN. It is beautiful where she grew up.
Remember how hysterical she was in ‘Nine to Five’?
Nothing but love for you Dolly 😉
I *heart* Dolly!
I love someone who doesn’t take themselves seriously at all and is so incredibly comfortable just being themselves!
Plus, growing up in NE Tennessee just a few counties over from where she’s from, you really get to hear all of the philantropy that she does in the area. She is responsible for all the tourism that now comes into the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area.
Class act all the way!
I think her public persona (which I adore) sometimes overshadows the fact that she’s also a brilliant songwriter. “Jolene” is a classic and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
I have and always will love Dolly! I believe she comes up with her little comments on her own – she doesn’t know what questions she’ll be asked. I love how ‘real’ she is. She tells it like it is. She is an angel – she is one person that I would truly love to meet some day. She’s one classy, talented, and smart woman!!
Ah, Jolene. What a wonderful song. She also wrote “I Will Always Love You” that Whitney Houston made so popular.
Love love love Dolly. She also has a good line about plastic surgery – That she’s been “sucked, plucked and tucked.”
Dolly Parton’s a true original, a special, rare bird she is. She’s wonderful!! She’s like nowadays’ Mae West, but different – I mean, she comes up with the witty sayings & one-liners right off the top of her head, naturally, and they’re always memorably brilliant, Dolly’s little sayings.
Yeah, she’s way cool. She always was…
Dolly, you are the best. I have been listening to you for years. There is not a song that I don’t love. I Will Always Love You is my favorite. 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias are my favorite movies. Dolly for President !!!!!
Dolly is a class act! She’s so lovable, if I ever meet her in person I think I’d give her a squeeze!
Dolly’s always been naturally witty. I don’t think she gets people to write it for her. It would be impossible to remember all those lines.
Tacky? Yes, but please keep in mind what Ms. Parton herself said: It’s expensive to look this cheap!
Love her!
Dolly Parton is an extrodary person!! Think: she has the Imagination Library… and she gives money to every charity!! She IS really generous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So think before you say something NOT nice about Mrs.Parton!!!!!!
