Anne Hathaway says she won’t get a nose job

Anne Hathaway gave a mildly interesting interview recently to UK newspaper The Independent. She talked in general terms about getting over her split from her boyfriend of four years, Italian conman Raffaello Follieri, using a prepared quote about how transformative difficult life experiences can be. Dating at work is usually no-no for 25 year-old Hathaway. She doesn’t say it’s off limits, just that she tries not to get with her co-stars. She says she considered plastic surgery to fix her totally normal nose, but that she ultimately made the decision not to get rhinopasty and thinks that having a non-altered face helps her stand out in Hollywood.

On her breakup and what she looks for in a relationship

“The worst thing that happens to you can be the best thing for you, if you don’t let it get the best of you,” she said, quoting the humorist Will Rogers in the aftermath of what has been a difficult few months…

Today, she says: “I try not to date where I work. It makes life easier. Besides, the possibility has never really arisen. I don’t say no to anybody, because I’d hope that people wouldn’t say no to me just because I’m an actor – but they’d have to be pretty extraordinary.

“The goal is to find someone you can be yourself around, who makes you laugh, who challenges you in a good way, and where you just spark off each other. My parents have been married more than 25 years, with all the glory and all the pain you can imagine, but they’ve stayed together. I want a strong marriage like that. I’ve always wanted a family. I’m not one of those people who says, ‘What’s the point of marriage?’,” says Hathaway, who is also an advocate for gay marriage, abandoning her youthful plans to become a nun after her older brother Michael came out.

On wanting a nose job

While Hathaway’s beauty has landed her a contract with Lancôme, she claims to suffer the same insecurities as the next woman: “Growing up, there’s a lot of pressure on young girls. You just want to be cookie-cutter beautiful. And sometimes you think, ‘Oh, maybe I could change something about myself to fit that mould’.

“I’m no exception. When I was growing up, I wanted a nose job, but now, my nose is what lets me change my face a lot, and I can be glamorous as Agent 99, then look rough as a drug addict for Jonathan Demme. Your face needs to have character if you’re an actor, otherwise you’re just a face.”

Hathaway also says she’s “the world’s biggest klutz” and that it was hard for her at first to play Agent 99 in Get Smart because the character is “someone who’s intimidating and completely in control of every situation.”

25 year-old Hathaway comes across as a sweet if naive girl. You have to wonder what she was telling herself in order to date Follieri for years and stay with him for months after he was accused of fraud and embezzlement. It wasn’t until the Feds stepped in that she finally got out of that relationship, and she must have known what was going on. At least she’s staying out of trouble, going to work and remaining virtually scandal-free. She must be made of Teflon because you would expect some of Follieri’s grime to have rubbed off on her. She still seems squeaky clean – if a bit boring. My expectations for her behavior are completely skewed by panty-less party girls who can’t even act, though. Intellectually, I would rather see a calm, well-spoken bright-eyed Hathaway than a disheveled drunken starlet, although the drunk ones are more entertaining to watch.

What’s with the high waisted shorts? Please tell me they’re not coming back in style!

I’ve liked this girl from the day she came on the scene – she’s pretty and she’s got the girl next door look. I’m glad she’s not changing the nose.

My God, that’s an unfortunate outfit.

But seriously, props to her for not being a drunken coke-up party girl. But she still should have known better with Folleri. I have mixed feelings about this one.

I had some shorts kinda like that in the eighties. 🙂 I was sixteen. It’s a bummer for her that she can’t use that excuse.

Her nose is fine the way it is.

  5. Kristin says:

She doesn’t need a nose job!

She doesn’t need a nose job, who ever told her otherwise, should be kicked in the butt.

I bet every actress in Hollywood is told constantly that she needs to change SOMETHING–her nose, her lips, lose weight, change her hair, have bigger boobs, a deeper tan, a sharper chin, etc. etc.
We tend to percieve female celebs as vain, but the truth is they get A LOT of pressure about how they look (how “the studio” or “the producers” or “the director” thinks they OUGHT to look).
I’ve had friends in both modelling and acting, and I always found it revolting the way women are treated in these industries. I had one friend (who was very thin), working in modelling, and was told she needed to lose weight on her thighs.
How, exactly, do you lose weight in ONE part of your body and not anywhere else??? No wonder so many young women end up bulemic or anorexic!
(the agency who told her this naturally didn’t care if she harmed herself trying to achieve their requirements!)
Sorry, this is a hot-button topic for me.
I am the mother of a daughter and I do not want her growing up to think that her nose or her clothing or her body is more important than her character, her mind and her heart.
I hope Anne Hathaway continies to be true to herself.

she thinks her look changes for each role? that’s weird, because i feel like her face looks exactly the same in every movie, like a beautiful mannequin. something about her always reads flat. but there is nothing wrong with her nose…i wonder who told her to get it fixed?

Good for her for not getting a nose job. I always wanted one through high school, but never could afford one, so didn’t get one. Now I am so happy. I took specific traits from both of my parents, but my nose is a total mixture of the two and I love that about it, even if it isn’t perfect. It’s sort of poetic.

I find her absolutely gorgeous. I like her slightly over-sized eyes and mouth, her porcelain skin. She always comes across as REAL and intelligent in her interviews. Don’t give a damn about what anyone else says about her, she is one of my faves. As far as her loser boyfriend,,,25 is really young and a good amount of cynicism probably hadn’t set in yet. Probably pretty naive. Most of us have been there when we were younger.

I love her! Pale is the new tan!

But she needs to ditch those shorts!! I am tall and fair, and have long legs, and wearing shorts can be tricky like that. They tend to look even shorter than they actually are.

I love her. She’s the real thing and I think she’s beautiful. She was superb in “Becoming Jane.”
