What happened to Orlando Bloom’s career?

Orlando Bloom made his career playing eye candy in huge Hollywood films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy and Kingdom of Heaven, but now that he’s on the other side of 30, Orlando seems to be re-evaluating his career.

The final film in the Pirates trilogy, released in 2007 to nearly universal critical disdain, was the last time Orlando was seen on the big screen. He has a small part in the film anthology New York, I Love You, out in 2009, and has been rumored off-and-on to star opposite Liam Neeson and Yun-Fat Chow in the Johnny To film The Red Circle.

Despite being rumored to go naked in Equus, Orlando instead took a small part in the London production of In Celebration last summer.

Since then, he’s been in the news mostly for his environmental work with Global Cool and his relationship with Victoria’s Secret supermodel Miranda Kerr.

Finally, it seems Orlando may have a new film in the works. It won’t be a huge Bruckheimer blockbuster, but a smaller film about the siege of Sarajevo by Bosnian Serbs in the early nineties. The film is based on the book Fools Rush In by Bill Carter, and would be directed by Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington.

Orlando told reporters in Sarajevo, “A film is a very specific and personal account of Bill Carter’s experience in Sarajevo during the war and we would very much like to make the film here.”

He hopes to begin shooting the film by the end of the year. The Sarajevo mayor has promised financial support.

Orlando would not be playing protagonist Bill Carter in this film. I haven’t read the book, so I’m not sure which character he would be playing or who would play Carter.

He is also reported to be producing. He has a previous producer credit on the 2004 film Haven, in which he also had a role.

It’s possible these smaller roles are Orlando’s choice. He was reportedly burned out after making back-to-back sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean. Smaller stage and film roles, as well as producing, are a way to get back to his acting roots.

On the other hand, the reign of a Hollywood pretty boy is always short-lived. Nearly every article on Ben Barnes of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian fame tagged him the second coming of Orlando Bloom, and Jake Gyllenhaal is playing the title role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a role seemingly tailor-made for sword-and-sandal vet Orlando. Maybe these smaller roles are all he can get.

Either way, it’s probably a good move. Orlando doesn’t have the force of Leonardo DiCaprio, so he’s better off following in the footsteps of another dethroned pretty boy, Josh Hartnett, and taking small gritty independent roles, but staying away from dating Scarlett Johannson.

Of course, the Lord of the Rings fangirl in me doesn’t care if he makes Japanese hair-care product commercials for the rest of his life, as long as he dons the tights and bow again as Legolas in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Rings prequels.

Note by Celebitchy: Here’s Orlando Bloom’s Uno hair get commercial. It also features Japanese actress Chiaki Kuriyama.

Thanks to Orlando News for the tip.

He’s still good looking but what’s with putting all of that stuff in his hair? Are all Japanese commercials “mini movies”?

  2. Mme X says:

Maybe the question is what happened to his hair? I’m sure he’ll bounce back; just not a very flattering picture–almost unrecognizable.

  3. vdantev says:

Still waiting for ‘The Hobbit’ to get made?

  4. Lizi says:

I thought he had given up acting for a while to spend some time concentrating on his Buddhist studies – I’m sure I read that in an interview with him a couple of years ago.

  5. Lee says:

The Hobbit has already BEEN filmed, vdantev. It was made several years ago. It’s just not allowed to be released. If it ever will be, sadly.

It seems he’s just doing whatever he wants, who can blame him he’s made his money.

  6. Kaiser says:

What happened to his career? Four words: Rat face & dirt lip.

Oh, and he’s not a very good actor.

  7. Lola says:

What happened to his career? Silly question. Di Caprio warned him, pretty boy roles never did any one any good. Get down and dirty and take a gritty role. There is so far you looks can take you.

  8. czarina says:

Okay, it’s hard to admit, but I am the only person in the entire world who has not seen ‘Lord of the Rings’ (head hanging in shame)
Are these picutes of Bloom with the long, blond hair from that movie?
I’m struck by how much (in those pictures) he looks like that actor from Harry Potter–the one who plays Lucius Malfoy (sorry, can’t remember the actor’s name off the top of my head).

  9. miss_kitteh says:

Kaiser, you expressed my thoughts exactly. Thanks for the laugh!! 😆

  10. RAN says:

@czarina…I’m with ya.. I think we’re the only 2 who haven’t seen Lord of the Rings – just not my thing. Orlando looks too weird in those pics though, it couldn’t have done much for a career (looks wise). I did force myself to watch the last two Pirates movies, but that was mostly to see Johnny Depp. Orlando looked pretty good in those movies though.

If I was still a freshman in high school, I would have torn you guys a new one because one day, he was going to show up to my house and marry me but alas, I am older and have realized a very shocking truth, “Orlando Bloom Can’t Act.” LOL! I mean, his facial expressions kill me. He does dated films ALL THE TIME! I am pretty sure he did only 2 films set in current time and I need my $6.50 back for seeing Elizabethtown..it was HO-riffic. LOL! He should have just picked out roles like how James McAvoy picked them. James did period pieces, romantic, action, political in a short period of time. But then again, James Mcavoy is a great actor and Orlando Bloom is one step above a commercial actor.

  12. Snowblood says:

Sammie323, LotR fangirls Unite! I loved the films, but of course nothing compares to the Tolkien books themselves.

Orlando Bloom… you know, oddly enough, my favourite Bloom role thus far in his career has been his Balian de Ibelin in Kingdom of Heaven. For whatever reason, he really was perfect in that film.

  13. Orangejulius says:

Not pretty enough for a pretty boy. Josh Hartnett, on the other hand…

  14. czarina says:

Msfortune; don’t be too hard on Orlando–if you look closely, most of the big movie stars in Hollywood can’t act. They have ONE character-type that they play over and over. Kevin Costner–he doesn’t even change his expression from one movie to the next!
Where they go wrong is when they start believing their own PR hype and thinking they really CAN act and demanding to be in more ‘serious’ or ‘dramatic’ movies (*cough*Tom Cruise*cough)–always a mistake.
Compare any of them to Johnny Depp and you will see the difference between a REAL actor and a Hollywood mediocre actor. (Look at the range of Depp’s movie roles, his ability to alter his character completely…he’s amazingly talented).

  15. Aspen says:

I live in Japan, and the culture here is very, VERY “into” melodrama. Though most of the commercials are not as long as this one, the vast majority ARE ridiculously over-emotional. Well…they are by American standards, at least. There is a lot of stuff in the pop culture here that Westerners would find very full of cheese…processed cheese, even. On the upside, everything the Japanese people do is done with small formalities that make even little things beautiful and … just, better than what I was used to at home in the U.S. Packaging is always attractive and novel. Nothing is left plain or unembellished. Politeness is everything, and little touches of elegance or decoration are added to even the most mundane of products. We could learn a lot from the Japanese culture’s book.

The trendy style for Japanese men right now is to wear their hair in very much the same fashion you see Orlando Bloom’s in this ad. Every Japanese man under 25 has hair that looks JUST like that. Ha ha.

  16. Nan says:

Aspen, you are so right about the beauty of their packaging. Their storefronts & storefront signs. All beautiful. I miss you, Japan. I’ll be back ‘home’ to you soon.

  17. Nan says:

I always thought Orlando Bloom had clowny looking eyes. He’s not handsome enough to be a pretty boy. He has a hole for a mouth.

  18. Lovely says:

:O what happend to orlando he´s grazy… i like it in the pirate movie

  19. ekofriendly4 says:

he’ll kick all you suckers’ arses when the Cross comes out. he can so act. you need to be familiar with his emotions and expressions to see his awesome acting. the historical movies he’s acted in will keep him remembered.

  20. superman says:

    wow your dirt!

  21. Roj Blake says:

Blooms demise should surprise no one. He was just a pretty face with no real talent, in an industry where pretty faces are a dime a dozen. Sam Worthington is following in Blooms footsteps at the moment, he can’t act for nuts and his roles will soon dry up.

  22. Nali says:

Bloom is the most narrow scoped actor in hollywood. Even C-list actors know how to pick their roles better. His roles are limited to either bow & arrow OR sword play, so much that he’s the new go to stunt man rather than the go to actor. I read also he got 1mil for the hobbit. ok, if you’re a great actor, you can keep demanding 1mil for a 1min performance, but if you’re just sucking right now, who the heck wants to pay you that high for their film?! (hobbit aside since he was in the original and it’s a multi billion franchise). 2 things will happen in the next 10 yrs: wifey will leave him cause she wants more fame and money, and he’s gonna have to start taking acting classes.
