Avril Lavigne was going to have her show banned in Malaysia because she was deemed ‘too sexy’. Obviously it’s a cultural thing, a fanged woman who spits at people must be considered sexy by Malays. Kind of like a gentle vampire fantasy.
The show is no longer banned, so the 10,000 people who bought tickets will get to see their ‘idol’ in concert. Avril’s an idol? According to her she is.
The Muslim nation’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry announced earlier this week that the Canadian singer would not be allowed to perform two days before the nation will celebrate its Independence Day because “It’s not in the spirit of our National Day.
But it seems they’ve had a change of heart, and the show will go on as scheduled on August 29, says Lavigne.
“Well, I’ve actually been approved by the government to play a show,” she told MTV. “I’ve already sold 10,000 tickets there, so I will be going to put on a concert for the fans. They tend to, you know, sometimes not want Western artists in their country. I respect that, but at the same time, you know, there’s people that listen to music there and want to see their idols and stuff, so it’s all good: been approved by the government and [I’m] going to go put on a show and have fun.”
Does Avril think that everyone that attends a concert views her as an idol? I know that you’re paying quite a lot to see a show now, but just because you’re willing to pay doesn’t mean you idolize her.
The restriction on performers include no jumping, hugging or kissing on stage, no drugs promotion of offensive images, and keep yourself covered from neck to knees.

I went to see Avril a few years ago, and I was disappointed. Folks who want to see a chick rock should check out The Distillers or Joan Jett.

Not to defend her or anything, but I know its common in Japan, what we call a “star”, they call an “idol”, figure of speech. Could it be so in other Asian countries too? Though I don’t expect we could anticipate Avril being smart enough to understand that.

Daisy, they even hate themselves…the owner of the blog let’s them comment to each other as though they are IMing on AOL or MSN. Who cares if you live in Jersey & love Stevie Nicks!? Nothing worse than reading the comments on the ‘caption this’ hoping to get a laugh & instead have to skim over personal dialogue about why the moving van hasn’t arrived w/their stuff yet. A little personal stuff here & there is fine, a ‘lil bonding okay but the comments there are not worth reading unless it is for the caption contest.

Comparing the powder-puff punk of Avril to the legendary rock and roll/punk rock stylings of Joan Jett and Brody Armstrong is a bit simplistic, non?
I mean on the one hand you have a completely manufactured entity funded and promoted by corporate stooges (and the not Iggy’s kind of Stooges), and on the other hand you have tough-as-nails bitches who forged their way into a cultural/music scene that was primarily dominated by males. JJ and BA are the archetypes for female rockers everywhere. They defined the female rocker in each of their respective genres, through hard work, talent, ‘fuck you’ attitude, and the occasional “big break”. Avril is just some hobo record executes found on the side of the road and decided to play dress-up with.
The comments on Dlisted might be lame (haven’t had the patience to read more than a few), but Michael K is hilarious. LOVE HIM.

I post on DListed. I think Michael K’s hilarious, but a lot of the commenters are shallow twits, hence making it a little difficult to tolerate at times. I get bashed on there a lot because I don’t sit there and make fat jokes all day about women who aren’t even overweight.
