As I wrote about just a few hours ago, Ryan Murphy (creator of Glee) took to the Hollywood Reporter to call the Kings of Leon a bunch of a–holes. You can read my recap of the situation here. While the Kings of Leon seemed to issue a joint statement as a band to Us Weekly and whoever else, their drummer Nathan Followill took to his Twitter account to tweet something nasty to Ryan Murphy. His original tweet read: “Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f-ck.” You see, because Ryan Murphy is gay, therefore he must wear a bra and get manicures? Or maybe Nathan is calling Ryan a woman, because Ryan bitches like a woman, and thus needs manicures and bras?
Anyway, after that, Nathan must have gotten some criticism, because he added another tweet: “I’m sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I’m so not that kind of person. I really do apologize.” But he still didn’t take down the first tweet.
So… am I still Team Kings of Leon, now that I know the drummer is rather douchey? Eh. It’s all so… childish. Ryan: “OMG, you wouldn’t let me sing your song, YOU’RE SUCH A DICKWEED.” Nathan: “No, YOU’RE GAY, go change your tampon!!!” Ryan: “YOU SUCK!” Nathan: “Your mom sucks!” That’s what it is, basically. A couple of prepubescent douches arguing.
Photos courtesy of WENN.
I don’t think he needed to apologize. People are always going to misconstrue someone’s words. I thought the tweet was humorous; a slight dig, albeit unnecessary. Move on.
WOW. THAT was crappy of him. Boo Hiss. I thought the band’s response was GREAT. Now…I think this guy is a douche, big time.
He’s calling him a woman. Because apparently women whine. Not homophobic, just douchetastic.
I think it’s really inappropriate and his message is lost on what he wants to convey because of those choice of words.
He should have just put “focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f-ck”. That is a good response.
Still team KOL. And I think he should watch the fighter. It was excellent!
Back on topic I think he was just calling the guy a bitch, whatever.
He should have left out the middle sentence, and it would have been perfection. At least he owned up and apologized for coming off badly. Yet to see Murphy do that for raging against them to begin with.
Well, it looks like the only winner in this is someone who couldn’t care less about either of them. ME!
“A couple of prepubescent douches arguing.”
I think you nailed with this comment. I didn’t get a flash on my phobe meter so I think its just a way of calling him a wussss. Now days it seems like no one uses proper grammer in calling someone a “fucktard” so it’s all open to interpretation.
OMFG! Are these grown men. Whether gay, straight or unsure, for crying out loud, suck salt or get a pair.
jeez… we live in suck an uptight, humorless age… if people find that offensive they should just lock themselves inside a box and hide from the world
despite differences, it seems they shop at the same shiny jacket store.
Maybe they just care about the show Glee. I personally have never seen it and don’t plan to. Team KOL!
LMAO @ anons!
I thought Todd over at IDontLikeYouInThatWay.com summed up this whole situation perfectly!
“Dear Gays, this is why 99% of the world hates you. Not because you’re gay, but because you do shit like this. All the time. If you don’t get your way, you throw a temper tantrum like a kid in the aisle at Target. Shut the fuck up. A rock band doesn’t want their songs on a show about gay kids in a choir. Get over it.”
oh douche move. and he didn’t have to say anything. he had opinion on his side. shitty comment.
anonymous. could you be more offensive please? how dare you imply that all gay people have temper tantrums. even if you are quoting someone, you’re doing it to agree with them.
Still team KOL.
What’s the best way to insult a man? Tell him he’s acting like a woman.
‘Cause everyone knows that woman are gross, inferior, and are the only gender that acts in irrational/emotional ways.(sarcasm)
Both of these douches are in the wrong and Nathan’s apology is bullshit. If he didn’t want his response to sound misogynist and homophobic than he shouldn’t have used misogynist and homophobic descriptions to describe and put down Ryan’s behavior.
I agree with Melanie. I took his comments to mean he was calling him a bitch. I do that to the guys at work when they start whining about something. It may not be politically correct but it makes them man up and shut up at least. 😉
Whatever. His remark could be taken as sexist but I am not going to jump to the conclusion that he is sexist just as I would not jump to the conclusion that all gay people support the Glee guy! Get over it already!
Whats to misconstrue. There is no correct meaning.
I think it’s more sexist than homophobic, but it’s actually both. Why are we all so comfortable talking about homophobia, but everybody is afraid to say the word sexism?
Ahaha @anons! Hilarious!!
i doubt he even knew ryan murphy was gay. I think hes more referring to the fact murphy was acting like a whiny little bitch
he’s actually not a douche he’s seems really sweet when you watch interviews especially the old ones when they all had long hair and looked like they came from the 70s.
Jinni, I agree completely. If you don’t want people to think are misogynistic and/or homophobic, then dont make misogynistic and/or homophobic statements. I don’t consider myself humorless, but these aren’t funny.
@Vi: You just exemplified the very problem here. Anonymous was citing a quote made by someone else that he/she found entertaining. Anonymous was in no way implying that all gays throw temper tantrums. I, too, found the quote funny; not that I have a problem with gay people; it is more funny in the way that South Park is funny by mocking EVERY stereotype.
Please quit reading more into others’ comments than is really present. It’s annoying and sucks the humor out of life. In the words of the ever-famous Duckie: “It’s called a sense of humor. You should get one, they’re nice.”
These guys are taking themselves way too seriously..They are popular because they are a bunch of pretty boys who take a nice picture but they are above Glee…Gimme a break! Watch the “Exile On Main Street” Documentary with The Stones if you want to see a REAL Band in action.
Way to take the high road. Not.
LMAO @anons!
Ryan was acting like a bitch – he was called a bitch . . .simple . . .
That was a lame apology. He didn’t say he’s “sorry for saying those things”, rather, he’s just saying he’s “sorry that people misunderstood him”.
He’s not taking responsibility for his own actions, he’s dodging it and shifting the responsibility to others. Not impressed.
No one in this fight for me but I have heard from someone in the UK who has dealt with this band that they are totally douchetastic.
I totally agree; its incredibly sexist and asinine. These tools are intolerable although their music is fantastic. From Pidgeon-gate in St. Louis to what they’ve said about their mainstream fans they prove themselves-over and over again to be hipster fucktards with no real sense of reality. Who the hell under 30 is THAT sexist and homophobic?!?!
Yeah, I see more sexism than homophobia here. And if “you’re not that kind of person,” maybe you should think before you publish that shit to Twitter, dumbass.
Maybe this Murphy guy is heterophobic. He asked, they said no, that’s their right, get over it and stop acting like “Glee” is anything more than a for-profit TV show that makes lots of people tons of money because that’s all it is.
They’re all pathetic! Ryan Murphy’s rant was ridiculous, but this tweet was sexist AND homophobic! Two for the price of one!
I have two best friends that are gay so I have no problem with gay people. but I seriously dislike gay people like ryan murphy. The guys that think being gay means u can be bitchy. I personally know three and they are the rudest.
Ryan Murphy should’ve kept his fat, stupid mouth shut in the first place.
They said no. So what? Move on.
Not really sure how you could “misconstrue” what he said. Also, I hate when people say “I don’t want people to think my homophobic statement was homophobic. That’s not who I am.” Well, you know, I guess it actually is, though.
Anyone who automatically thinks “man in womens clothes= gay” needs to work on their own gay stereotyping. Why go straight to the gay thing? Why is “gay” Murphy’s defining characteristic? I thought it was a clear shot at his ability to “take it like a man”
So not homophobic. Mysogynistic, technically.
In any case, I hate all the people involved, and their shiny, shiny jackets.
whatever. Douche Wars… coming to a theater near you.
I don’t think it’s homophobic. It’s emasculating. Even though I’m a woman, my go-to in a fight with a man is always emasculation, which always involves misogynistic comments. Not proud of it but it’s the truth. On the rare occassion that my level-headed fiance throws a hissy, my dad will say that his slip is showing. Is that homophobic? B/c I think it’s a funny comment & I wouldn’t be marrying him if I thought he was gay.
Well they seem to be having many temper tantrums as of late. Anything they find offensive. They tattletale about it. And want people to be disliked over it . I think it was very funny. And I don’t have a PC bone in my body. People are entitled to the way they feel. This is a free country still. Not for long if these babies have their way
Haha love the Inbetween tweet.
“You’re a fucking idiot + something other inappropriate”
“Should I eat strawberry or chocolate icecream today?”
“OMFG I’m totally sorry for being homophobic”
Nothing homophobic about it. Looks like Murphy dropped the gay card when he should’ve dropped, misogyny card. I guess that mean RM is sexist
Just saw this on HuffPo: Kings of Leon cancel show because of bird poo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Qp7-mw-sM
I guess they talk sh*t everywere they go! Talk about hitching up your bra and storming out!
It’s interesting how any kind of bigotism is no longer tolerated, except when it comes to bashing women.
Apparently the best way to insult someone is by comparing him to a woman. No CD of theirs is going to join the two I already have of them.
Do they care? Probably not, but you got to take a stand somehow.
Team KOL and I have never noticed how hot they are. KOL was being attacked by this winer and they have no right do defend themselves. Loads of crap! in this politically correct society that they try to censor every word you say. I don’t see the implied homophobia in this comment just that Ryan Murphy was behaving like a bitch.
@Heaven Bound, so you are saying that comparing someone to a woman equals comparing someone to a bitch?
KOL suck anyway and i hate glee
Ryan picked a fight and got verbally sucker punched. I don’t think that there was anything cerebral or broadly implying about Nathan’s statement. It was just a pissed off reaction to a pissed of reaction.
Good god, I don’t have the energy to get worked up about this. It’s not like the dude pulled a Jesse James and got all nazi up in the place.
It was funny. Maybe a little offensive to some, and well, whatever. I’m team everybody in this case.
GO TEAM EVERYBODY! 🙂
Don’t get so uptight little Frog! You are in a site called Celebitchy.. right? if you get so offended by the word why are you here?
I think it’s lame he felt he needed to apologize. I’m sure the Gleeks jumped all over him.
Ryan Murphy is the villain here. KOL needs to just be quiet about it from now on.
Glee is overrated crap. As Slash said, it’s “worse than Grease.”
Everyone complaining about Followill’s apology – why is it OK that Murphy still hasn’t apologized for his *unprovoked* attack, which was much worse? In case anyone forgot: “F*** you, Kings of Leon. They are such self-centered a$$holes” and then implying that they don’t care about children or arts education because they didn’t want their song on Glee.
Don’t start a dirty fight, and then try to hide behind “homophobia” because someone fights dirty right back. Was it mature? No. Would I have used those words? No. Did Murphy act like a bully and then run and cry when they gave it right back? Yes, he absolutely did.
he was calling Murphy a girly bitch because that’s what he was acting like. it didnt even sound homophobic. people are blowing it way out of proportion, and Ryan had it coming. if he had said something like “I was disappointed that KOL didn’t let me use their song and thought that was uncool” do you think Nathan wouldve reacted like that? no. but Ryan has to go and bitch and whine like a ten year old girl, and he deserved what Nathan gave him.
@ Zelda= awesome, well said. @Frog and Melanie, I’m with you. Whiners, all of them. When did it become so unPC to call out sexist rhetoric?
Ryan Murphy acted like a first class drama queen and got told to take his whiney ass and SIT DOWN. You politically correct drones need to lighten up!
meh
bras are over rated.
The show’s creator shouldn’t be such a bitch (gay or not, a man can act like a bitchy queen) but KOL should have stayed above it. Not put on their bras with manicured hands for some “battle.”
I agree with what you said. They sound like a bunch of 4 year olds. I love Glee, but I think it’s pretty douche-y of Ryan to call them a**holes because they dont want their songs featured on the show. And quipping back with comments on how he needs a bra is douche-y too.
I was at Pigeon gate! These guys (KOL) are douche bags, and whiners themselves. No need for Nathan F to be name calling when they, themselves are known complainers and whiners.
I used to be a fan until their StL stunt, and then subsequent things I have read about them.
no. the glee guy deserved it. the world doesn’t revolve around him and his show.
I can see how this got out of hand. I remember reading KOL initial quote as to why they turned down Glee while bigger bands were saying yes like Coldplay and Sir Paul McCartney. As soon as the lead singer gave his reason I knew s*it was going to hit the fan. He said that the band turn it down because they did not want so sell out. How did I hear of KOL, FROM A CAR COMMERCIAL. Lately this band has gotten to big for their britches and cannot afford anymore negative publicity involving their name. So with everyone higher up the music food chain saying yes, I can see why Murphy would say something but not so bitchy. There are no clear winners because both these bitches are going to continue to make gobs of money and I am going to continue to bitch on this website.
It wasn’t homophobic or sexist.
TEAM GET OVER IT!
it’s not homophobic. that is something i would say to a straight man OR a gay man bc they’re acting like a whiney bitch.
wait….ryan murphy is gay?!?!
damn, what waste of a perfectly good face to sit on…
sigh….story of my life…
No matter how you want to interpret those comments, they’re offensive. But I guess that was Nathan’s point. Pretty grade school on both sides if you ask me. I heard this band before they got big and enjoyed their music, but lately Caleb and Nathan act too big for their britches. Too bad, Nathan’s been my guilty fantasy for ages but this killed it.
“On the rare occassion that my level-headed fiance throws a hissy, my dad will say that his slip is showing.”
OMG, that had me LMAO.
Its Twitter. Its SUPPOSED to be raw. Murphy made this a fight on the playground by being so angry. It’s probably the coolest coverage Glee has ever had.
Honestly, I didn’t take his words to be homophobic. I think he was calling Ryan a ‘bitch’… thus the manicure & bra. I could be wrong, but that’s how I immediately took it.
Rude? Yes. As is much said in the heat of a Twitter battle. -_- Morons, both of them.
I posted this in the other KoL/Glee thread, but I’ll leave this here too.. ‘Ever heard the one about the band who became complete arses?’ http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=67939&st=0
Followill’s comments are homophobic because by imply that Ryan is acting like a woman he is saying that Ryan isn’t a “real man”, since according to society a man that does anything considered feminine is an imposter. Homophobes always use this idea of gay men not being “real man” as an insult to make them feel inferior to straight men.
A lot of Homophobic language is rooted in Misogyny.
I didn’t see that as homophobic, more like a reference to how bitchy Ryan’s comments were. He probably only tweeted the later statement after people blamed him for being both misogynistic and homophobic. That’s just my two cents!
@DiMi: “I think it’s more sexist than homophobic, but it’s actually both. Why are we all so comfortable talking about homophobia, but everybody is afraid to say the word sexism?”
@Frog: “It’s interesting how any kind of bigotism is no longer tolerated, except when it comes to bashing women.
Apparently the best way to insult someone is by comparing him to a woman.”
I think these are both great points.
Some of the most sexist remarks on this site are coming from women.
Somehow, men have trained us that be a cool ‘girl’ and not be perceived as a ‘bitch’ means to put up with constant bullshit language like this. Embrace and defend it even, and don’t forget to belittle other women who find it annoying or offensive. Ata girl. Good dog. Who’s really the bitch?
Someone on a recent post said that French women are above being jealous when their man is flirting with a beautiful woman… I had to laugh. No, it’s that French women have been trained to keep their mouths shut and not make a fuss, lest they be labelled a ‘ball buster.’ I wonder why men cheating there is so tolerated and even expected?
And before everyone jumps my ass for being ‘too PC’ or lacking a ‘sense of humor,’ replace “bitch” or the comparisons with a woman for a black person, or things perceived as black, and THEN bash me.
Any other anime fans out there think Nathan looks like Jin from Samurai Champloo in that picture?
I don’t think it was homophobic, I think Ryan Murphy is an egotistical a-hole who needs to shut the hell up and sit down he’s not nearly as important as he thinks he is.
@Jinni – “Followill’s comments are homophobic because by imply that Ryan is acting like a woman he is saying that Ryan isn’t a “real man”, since according to society a man that does anything considered feminine is an imposter.”
I took it to mean that he was comparing the way Ryan was acting to that of someone who behaves in a ‘bitchy’ way, which isn’t entirely gender/sexual preference-specific.
But it really all depends on who’s saying it, in what situation.
@Mouse – “Any other anime fans out there think Nathan looks like Jin from Samurai Champloo in that picture?”
I can see it a little. =) Would probably be easier to see if he pulled his hair back (or at least combed it every now & then.) xD
Jesus this world has become so censored. Can’t joke with female stereotypes – misogynist. Can’t joke with gay stereotypes – homophobic. Can’t pull a race-based joke which have been existing since knowledge of different races became more widespread – racist!
Anyway team KOL. As a woman, who doesn’t listen to their music or anything. I found that tweet humorous.
@ Heaven Bound. I’m not offended at the word, but at your assumption that all women are bitches, little brain.
And to all the women defending this kind of tweet: how would men react when you imply they are all @ssholes? Probably not as forgiving as all you are.
Little Brain? should I remind you your a Frog! talking about some lack of grey matter. Keep it coming you’ll wind up dissected.
It seems far more misogynistic than homophobic to me. Because you know, being called a woman is a HUGE diss. I like how that is with the men of the world. It’s one of those internalized sexism things.
I think everyone has made good points. Things I hadn’t really thought about when I first commented, problems that society is tolerating without stopping to realize what things really mean.
@Heaven Bound (80)- “Little Brain? should I remind you your a Frog! talking about some lack of grey matter. Keep it coming you’ll wind up dissected.”
I know you probably didn’t mean it the way it sounds, but that last sentence comes dangerously close to sounding like a threat.
There’s no need for insults just because you disagree.
@ Hakura
Funny that you don’t mention that to the one that started the insult. And lighten up will you that was just a joke. I will not be bullied because of my opinion.
TEAM NATHAN! I agree this more sexist than homophobic – he’s just telling RM to stop whining. I follow Nathan on Twitter – he’s never come across as a douchebag to me, I’d put money on him being a pretty nice/regular guy. If we’re going to make assumptions about people we’ve never met I’d say Ryan Murphy is the bigger DB, he shouldn’t have sent an F*** you out to KOL in the first place.
There are a capella covers of Use Somebody that have been recorded, KoL would have had to give permission for those right? I love Glee, and I LOVE KoL so I would have been happy about them using one of their songs on the show but I can understand that it would be too much exposure for an already overplayed song.
Kaiser – you are a stitch! I love that conversation between Ryan and Nathan at the end of your article…sooooooo funny. Glee may be set in a high school but this is very JR. High and you nailed that.
@Heaven Bound (80)- @ Hakura
“Funny that you don’t mention that to the one that started the insult. And lighten up will you that was just a joke. I will not be bullied because of my opinion.”
Actually, I did mean both of you, in regard to insulting each other. I only quoted you in regards to the ‘dissection’ thing. I didn’t mean for it to look like I was just referring to you in general.
I even said I didn’t think that was your intent, but something like that could easily be misunderstood, perceived as a threat, & reported. I know that’s something they have to take seriously on this board, which could get someone banned.
I wasn’t scolding you.
Ya I dont think that “tweet” was referring to the guy being gay, I think it was refering to him “whining like a bitch” It wasn’t the most elegant way to say he thinks that ryan guy is stuck up his own ass but elegance probably wasn’t what he was aiming for. I think it’s unfortunate he had to apologize.
They said no, Murphy acted like a baby, there were a few exchanges of the band being reasonable and Murphy acting like a louder baby, louder and louder until he finally got the response he wanted.
It’s the way kids fight – one pokes and pokes and pokes and pokes and pokes and pokes until the other kid hits back, then the first kid cries and tattles.
He should have told Murphy to get a diaper and a bottle instead.
(I hate Kings of Leon. I hate Glee. Hate Glee more.)
Ryan did respond poorly to them not letting him use their song but they dont need to resort to sexism as if only girls whine?! Who is whining and bithcing in these Tweets? You Kings of Leon therefore i think YOU need to go put on a jock strap & stop being sexist pigs!
this rant and every opinion forthcoming is what’s wrong with EVERYthing nowadays. Everyone has to be so fucking politcally correct. it’s not kindergarten anymore
I’m still on Kings of Leon’s side. Yes, it’s a stupid and mysoginistic statement, yes, the band’s first response was a LOT better than this…but seriously, who does Ryan Murphy think he is? He called them a**holes, for no good reason.
If someone called me an a**hole simply because I refused to allow him to play my song, I’d be pissed off too — probably wouldn’t use homophobic/mysoginistic terms, but the answer wouldn’t be pretty either.
They said no, Murphy acted like a baby, there were a few exchanges of the band being reasonable and Murphy acting like a louder baby, louder and louder until he finally got the response he wanted.

@ Frankly:
You summed it up perfectly.
“despite differences, it seems they shop at the same shiny jacket store.”
“wait….ryan murphy is gay?!?!
damn, what waste of a perfectly good face to sit on…
sigh….story of my life…”
Bwahahahahah! This thread is slaying me. Thanks anons, clorismetchum for the lols. 😀
I found it to be him calling Murphy as woman, which, as a woman, doesn’t bother me in the least. I tell my guy friends shit like that all the time. “Go change your tampon”, “clean the sand out of your vagina”, etc etc.
Team KOL.
GLEE is a show full of offensive stereotypes: the campy/eccentric gay kid, promiscuous cheerleaders, dumb footballers, etc. If Nathan Followill’s comments were intended as homophobic slurs then I could not imagine someone more deserving of them then Ryan Murphy – Ryan perpetuates the sterotypes (in GLEE) that Followill was using against him! Gotta love Karma…
He’s an idiot. And i rather not know because i adore that band. Proof that musicians should keep their mouths shut and not expose their lack of brains. So not sexy.
his comments were about pettiness and spoiled behavior- and that is all
