Angelina Jolie says she wants to do European and French language films

Angelina Jolie was interviewed recently by German-language weekly news magazine Focus. She was asked specifically if she would be interested in doing a European, as opposed to a Hollywood, film, and she said yes, and that she would even like to do a film in French once her skills in the language improve enough in a few years. She said she’s not as much of a movie buff like her partner, Brad, and that she’s either sleeping while a film is on or is getting up and taking care of the kids. Angelina admited that she’s a restless type person and doesn’t often sit still.

BERLIN (AFP) โ€“ Hollywood star Angelina Jolie said she would relish the chance to act in a European film and may even be ready to take a French-speaking part in a few years, in an interview with a German magazine.

“No one has asked me yet,” she told the Monday issue of Focus news weekly when asked if she would like to work on the Continent.

“It would really interest me — there are more and more great films coming out of Europe and other cultures.”

The 33-year-old American, who has nestled into a sprawling estate in the south of France with her six children, said that she and her partner, American heartthrob Brad Pitt, had been learning French for two years.

“When I can really speak it, maybe I’ll try out for a French film in a few years,” she said.

Jolie told Focus that she rarely watches films on her own time.

“I find it difficult to sit still for two hours,” she said.

“I would rather read something or learn something or travel to experience something new.”

She said Pitt, 44, was the real movie buff of the family.

“When we watch together, I usually fall asleep or press pause so I can take care of the kids,” Jolie said.

That would be a definite motivation to learn a language if you had a job where you need to speak it convincingly as an actress. Before people start the inevitable “she should stay in France then” talk, she was asked by a German paper if she wanted to do European films, and she said yes. There are surely plenty of directors in Europe who will be contacting her after this interview. I wonder if she’s planning to stay in France or if the rumors that she’s moving back to the states with her family is true.

Angelina saying she has trouble resting is similar to something a commenter here once mentioned about seeing her in an airport unable to stop moving around. It would explain why she’s so thin if she’s constantly burning calories like that.

Wanted opens in Germany on September 4, which is why Jolie is doing interviews with German news outlets.

I wonder also CB if they are planning on staying in France long term, it is a beautiful country.

I never had the talent to learn a second language, except for some swear words in Italian & German.
It’s great that they are introducing another language to the kids while they are young.

  2. vdantev says:

Let the ‘I hate Angelina Jolie because I have no life’ cry-baby festival begin anew !!

  3. Allabouteve says:

Celebitchy- this is not a new interview, it was cobbled out of the press call she did in Cannes for Changeling and Kung fu panda.
As for moving back to States, that whole TMZ write up was just crap. Their main residence has been the Hollywood Hills residence and they made it look like they are just about to move in. Brad is shooting Inglorious bastard in Germany and France starting in October, so how does it make any sense for them to move back Los Angeles now.
If you live in Berlin I hope you get some exclusive pictures of Angie and the kids when they are around and about.

    ETA:
She has done European movie with Vanessa Redgrave, seeing her and Vanessa share a screen together was sublime.

I do know where she’s coming from re: not being able to sit still to watch a movie for two hours. I can’t do it either – I have to pause every few minutes to see to something more important or if its not that, rewind to get something interesting again. It drives my boyfriend nuts. There are so few movies worth wasting two hours of ones life for

  5. Kaiser says:

This interview reminds me of one of the best films I’d seen in years – that German film that came out 2006 or 2007, “The Lives of Others” – did anyone else see that?

Jolie would be great in something like that – so would many other “Hollywood” actors, like Blanchett or Clooney.

  6. Debra77 says:

I would watch her in anything. I think they will stay overseas until Brad finishes shooting the film, then either go to LA or NOLA. With the storm, I think Brad will want to see what is going on. I miss news about the family.Sorry… I do.

  7. Shane says:

I thought I was the only one who couldn’t do the 2 hour movie thing. What a relief to hear it’s not just me. Come to think of it, all the movie buffs I know are usually overweight and don’t exercise enough.

  8. CoCo says:

I love french cinema! It would be very interesting to see her in a european film. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. czarina says:

Totally with Angelina regarding not being able to sit still for a movie. The only time I can is at the theater (where I have no choice!) At home, my husband and kids have to drag me to watch a movie with them, and I usually get up halfway through.
It’s not a restless nature, so much (I can sit and read for hours), but I just don’t feel involved in a movie the way I do in a book.

  10. PJ says:

It strikes me as odd that a top actress is so restless she cannot watch a film! Maybe she drinks a lot of coffee, or is taking some sort of speed drug? Or just isn’t interested?

Of course some people do have trouble sitting still, but this is her career.

  11. Enonymous says:

I think that is pretty cool of her for trying to learn different languages and wanting to explore the different ways of acting and movie making.

  12. Victoria says:

AGREE CZARINA !!!! I have lots of books, and feel right at home in a book store… I can really LOSE myself in the story line, but have a hard time in a movie. How is the Smoking coming along ??? Left you a message on the Lohan ( paul Sullivan site ) ( their uncle )….. TO SYKO…. Did you brave the storm ??? Any more flooding or damage where you were ?

  13. Tess says:

Kaiser, I recently saw “The Lives of Others” and cannot get it out of my mind. How drab and banal evil is.

  14. elisha says:

For some reason that insults me as a moviegoer that AJ is in movies but doesn’t watch them. I think my viewers would feel the same if as a news anchor I said I never watch the news. Or if C|B said she never reads blogs.

As for the never being able to stop moving… it’s called meth. Just teasing.

  15. what says:

kaiser – i don’t know why but i also instantly thought of “lives of others” when reading this interview. great film.

  16. Irene says:

I just recently got back to the US after living in France for two years. In college I studied in France for a semester, and I graduated with a BA in French. I don’t think I will ever be able to fool a French person into thinking I’m a native speaker, no matter how fluent I become. I think the best Angelina could hope for is playing a foreigner in a French language film.

  17. nycmom100.. says:

I work in program development & other than stuff I watch for work, I very rarely watch tv. It is work for me. But I don’t that she meant. I think she means she is either checking on the kids or falling asleep.

  18. Enonymous says:

elisha, I actually feel the same way too. I read that there are a lot of famous actors/actresses that have never seen any of their own movies, even when they attend their own premiers, some just go at the bar when the film is playing. Now, I know that there are so people who do not like to watch themselves on screen (I am the same, it makes me cringe for some reason) but that is their job and when some admit that they do not watch any movies at all, it just feels like a slap in the face in my opinion. Like they are too good for that and have better things to spent their time on or something. ๐Ÿ˜•

  19. sssssssssss says:

    stupid fake woman.

  20. Amy says:

I’ve always admired Angelina as she’s always walked her own path and done things because she genuinly wanted to. I say good luck to her and her future endeavours!

  21. paris herpes says:

I sometimes feel like I can’t sit still either. I enjoy constantly moving around. Is that bad? Well, if you’ve just had babies then I can understand why you’d need rest as well as having like 6 kids running around too. Maybe she needs some tranqs!

  22. Kaiser says:

Tess & What – Wasn’t The Lives of Others incredible? I watched it even though I rarely have the patience to watch long, subtitled films, but the premise just sounded so good- and it delivered ten-fold. I loved the bald guy, the Stasi character. I think the actor passed away recently. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

  23. Little Hutt says:

Hahahaha. No. Please don’t do French movies Mrs Jolie. Unless you want to play whiny characters who are 30ish and single and living in Paris and who keep complaining about their personal life to their whiny friends who are 30ish and single and living in Paris too.
I’m French btw, so I unfortunately know what I’m talking about…

  24. Lara says:

Ulrich Muehe – the Stasi character. Great, GREAT german actor, died of cancer last year. RIP.

  25. DD says:

about the whole restless thing. She probably suffers from adhd, which thinking of it, speed would actually help her relax.
Just saying since I recently found that is the reason why I can’t sit still myself. I feel the need to be constantly be moving and it takes days to watch a movie. Since I always have to pause it to get up and do something else.

  26. Syko says:

I don’t know why it would insult anyone for her to act in movies and TV but not watch it. I work in a law firm but that doesn’t mean I have to sue everyone outside of work.

I can’t just sit and watch anything either. I have to be doing something else at the same time. Possibly this says something about the product that we are being asked to watch.

  27. Oh Duhh says:

Oh she’s like my mum she can’t just sit still she just want to do something with her hand when she’s sitting. I think Angie just don’t want to be idle.

  28. czarina says:

Victoria: Got your comment on the Lohan/Sullivan post (thank you!!) and have responded there. Ironcially, because of the quitting smoking, I have actually been watching more TV and movies than usually because I AM too restless to read!!LOL!
(I’m going to assume this will pass in a week or so).

  29. bomb says:

just because she gave birth to her kids in France, she thinks she can speak French or make French movies? the first picture of her looks like she’s saying “can i give you a BJ?” *smirk smirk*

let the attack of the brangeloonies begin!!

  30. chaz says:

At the end of the day it’s all about the money for her. Jennifer Connolly made french films… and nobody saw them! let Angie make some films that bomb and then she’ll be back in the states to make Tomb Raider 5: the revenge of Lara Croft’s 20 kids. I don’t blame her though ’cause Hollywood sucks!

  31. Whatever says:

Of course she does. Now that she’s learned that she can get child support from France for having over 4 kids. Greedy.

  32. someone says:

Im sure if she does a French film, her accent will be just as horrific as it was in Alexander and A Mighty Heart…

  33. Syko says:

Victoria – just saw your message! Sorry! We’re fine here. ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. sauvage says:

Um. UM. UMMMM! Europe is “another culture”? That’s what travelling the world has taught you, Ms Jolie?

  35. James says:

How can Ms Jolie know there are “there are more and more great films coming out of Europe and other culturesโ€ when she couldn’t sit still for two-hour to watch a movie?

This woman is full of contradictary comments all the times. No wonder people like to pick on her whenever she likes to sound smart or charitable.

Sorry Ms Jolie. Please try again. Perhaps we people from “another culture” will be impressed next time.

  36. Mairead says:

Little Hutt – don’t you think that Emmanuelle Bรฉart has a monopoly on those roles ๐Ÿ˜‰

LOL Syko – truer word was never spoke ๐Ÿ˜†
I think the closest term is that it would be a “bus-man’s holiday” ๐Ÿ˜‰

Funnily enough James, my cousin is the same. She either falls asleep or can’t concentrate on a two-hour film. We found that by me dragging her to French/German films that concentrating on the subtitles meant that she could watch a film to the end. Plus they tended to be less predictable so it would keep her interest longer.

  37. drew says:

u know ‘jolie’ means pretty in FRENCH yeah? so, she has a valid reason to be interested in the country of france and it’s culture as her family on her mother’s side are french/canadian.

  38. zxzx says:

since when did ‘MAYBE’ become WANTS TO. she might, she might not. god i hate the ways celebrity blogs and the celebrity media take a quote and change it’s meaning, context and actully cut out words and sentences

  39. Little Hutt says:

Mairead, it’s a good one ๐Ÿ™‚ I like Emmanuelle Bรฉart, but she did a lot of these roles.

  40. ayman says:

    Actually I like her movies.
