‘True Grit’ review: Darkly funny, completely enjoyable, but not really a classic

truegrit5

Over the weekend, CB and I actually met up (in the flesh!) and went to see True Grit. She’s a Matt Damon-aholic, and I’m a big fan of the Coen Brothers, so it seemed like an obvious pick. We both enjoyed the film – although I’m not sure how it fits into the pantheon of Coen Brothers films. Does it out-rate The Big Lebowski? Fargo? No Country For Old Men? Raising Arizona? Not really. It had a surprising amount of dark humor, and the acting and story were first-class… but I’m slightly unconvinced that this one will be considered one of their best. It seems more like the Coen Brothers wanting to make an old-fashioned western with Jeff Bridges, and they just accidentally made a good, crowd-pleasing movie.

The basic story (with no spoilers): Hailee Steinfeld’s character (Mattie Ross) hires US Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to track down her father’s murderer. Matt Damon plays the Texas Ranger who is hunting the same murderer, but for a different crime. Hailee and Jeff are the two leads of the film – Matt’s character is a true supporting player, and Josh Brolin plays the killer, and I was surprised with how small Brolin’s part was. Anyway, the story is basically about the journey of Rooster and Mattie to find the killer. Mattie is all of 14 years old – and she’s smart, sassy, tough and precocious as all hell. To be honest, she stole nearly every scene she was in, which is remarkable considering both Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges were basically playing hilariously cartoonish buffoons to varying degrees. Mattie is the emotional heart of the film, and she has wonderful chemistry with both of her leading men.

Things I loved about the film: Hailee Steinfeld’s film debut performance is a total knockout – she deserves every nomination she’s getting. I loved that they got an actual kid to play the kid, and I love that she doesn’t come across like she’s 14-going-on-40. I also loved Matt Damon, who is a great and confident enough actor to play second-fiddle to Hailee and Jeff Bridges. Late in the film, there’s a brief scene between Hailee and Matt where they are just speaking to each other and… it was my favorite scene of the film. Sigh… I would never take Matt away from CB, but I do love him too.

Things that I wasn’t crazy about: I love some Jeff Bridges, but I lost chunks of his dialogue because of the crazy voice he was doing. Maybe Jeff decided to do his voice like that so that people would come and see the movie for a second and third time just to understand what the hell he was saying. I also thought Josh Brolin was underutilized – but that’s probably because I really like him as an actor, and I always want to see more of him. Barry Pepper also had a small part in the film, and he too was underutilized. Also – and I’m really not saying this as a spoiler, but: I wanted a different resolution. I wanted a different ending. I didn’t hate the ending, I just thought it was going to end differently.

So… would I recommend True Grit? Of course. My favorite film of the year is still The King’s Speech, but don’t go into True Grit thinking that it’s just a boy movie, or a straight western. There’s a thick strain of feminism and one of the best female performances of the year. It’s also really, really funny and completely solid.

The best part of the review was you & CB seeing the movie together…did you laugh & cry at the same parts? Did you share a big popcorn bucket? Spill!

  2. Wens says:

Still remember the original with John Wayne – will I feel disappointed if I watch this re-hash? He was the best!

  3. QUEST says:

I haven’t seen the film yet but would soon. I honestly like to look at remakes and do comparisons to the older works – just for the fun of it.

Loved John Wayne (he is a timeless classic) and would love to see how this movie faired in comparison.

  4. Rita says:

How exciting!!!! Our two high priestesses (or is it priestessi) sharing an evening together. If the male patrons had known, they would have asked the theater manager to leave the lights on.

@Quest: Oh yeah, the Duke! You’d love my husband.

  5. Kaiser says:

No popcorn, but CB did smuggle in some sodas! We were loud bitches. Of course.

  6. samihami says:

Well, the ending followed the book so I think the ending was appropriate. I didn’t have any trouble understanding what Bridges was saying throughout the movie.

I love John Wayne, and his version of the movie was good, but the girl playing Mattie in the original just ruined it. She was 21 years old playing a 14 year old and she just wasn’t very good. Even John Wayne hated working with her-he thought she was terrible in the role and obnoxious and unprofessional on the set. The animosity shows in their performances.

In the modern version, I think that Steinfeld absolutely stole the show. she was perfectly cast and was able to take that odd way of speaking and make it seem natural. There was an excellent mix of humor, drama and action. I don’t think Brolin’s part needed to be bigger, simply because the movie wasn’t about his character—it was about the HUNT for his character.

I am a huge classic movie fan, and normally do not like when they remake them. I saw this one only because it’s Coen brothers, and they are great movie makers. I went into the theater interested, but not expecting to like it as much as I did. All in all, the Bridges version is better than the Wayne version.

I smuggled in some pistachios too but Kaiser didn’t want any. Not everyone likes pistachios. We did laugh at the same parts, some of which no other patrons laughed at, but they were funny!

  8. brin says:

@Kaiser…lol, no surprise there! Hope y’all had fun.
@CB….too funny! Now I know you had a good time!

  9. Kaiser says:

I really like pistachios but I didn’t want to be crackin’ nuts while I watched the movie! But it was good, and CB has a hilariously loud laugh. It was great.

Very cute that you guys met up in the flesh. I am glad I am not the only movie theater food smuggler out there. I’ve never seen the original because I hate westerns. I agree that this may not be as good as other Cohen classics but it’s still pretty darn amazing. Haliee Steinfeld completely holds her own and I actually like Jeff Bridges non decipherable mumbling.

  11. Rita says:

I don’t care if they are my two favorite bitches, I don’t want to be watching a movie with someone behind me cracking pistachios all night (Especially soda smugglers).

Ps Thanks Samihami, I was wondering how the original compared.

  12. the_porscha says:

For those who’ve seen the original: The remake follows the book’s ending, the original made its own. If you like the original film’s ending better, you’re less likely to appreciate this version’s ending, although I think both are quite good for different reasons.

  13. brin says:

@Rita…I bet you would be “shushing” Kaiser and CB during the movie.

  14. Rita says:

    @brin

My perception of Kaiser and CB indicates the violence on the screen would have been tame by comparison. “Fill your hands with SHANKS you bitch of bitches”.

I saw it and liked it, but didn’t LOVE it. Having said that, I’ll likely buy a used DVD when it’s available, just because the quirky characters were so enjoyable. My poor boyfriend was forced to watch it and was polite throughout and has never said boo about it, but I know he prefers the John Wayne version.

    Noisy bitches indeed! Harumph!! 😉

  16. I also thought it was well-acted but just not my favorite film. Or even one of my favorites. And I also noticed JB’s voice and wondered “how does he do that?”. I guess if you notice it, it’s over the top. But it was clear enough to me. I give it an “eh”….

  17. Tazina says:

I liked Jeff Bridges in it but not the kid who played the 14 year old. It was an okay movie but won’t be on my favorites list.

  18. Moreaces says:

I agree about Brolins role, It was a bit small, but played well, I do have to see it again and may watch it tonight. Me and my friends were a little tipsy the first time. I however dont think it is Oscar worthy, though a good film

  19. Novaraen says:

I really loved the original and I’m a huge John Wayne fan….but I agree that the “girl” in the original was terrible and she was the only part of it that I hated.

After hearing from you guys about how awesome Hallie is in this new version, and also because I love Jeff Bridges too…I’m going to have to see it! 🙂

  20. KateNonymous says:

Mr. Nonymous and I saw it a few weeks ago and loved it. I agree about Bridges–his performance was strong, but he mumbled too much and I missed some lines. Damon was excellent, playing a solid character who definitely was not the lead. It was a bit of a change for him and I thought he did a great job. Brolin was good, but I don’t think that role was very challenging. Barry Pepper was terrific, and I wish his role had been bigger. Hailee Steinfield was riveting, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why she’s nominated in “supporting actress” for awards. Her character drives all of the action in the movie, and is clearly the lead–that’s where she should have been nominated.

By the way, while watching the movie, I was struck by a bit of Saving Private Ryan irony. Anyone else catch it?

  21. Rita says:

Does anyone else find it a little too coincidental that 24 hrs after the first thread of Hot Girl Friday a certain two bitches met up and by their own addmission it was “in the flesh”? Not that there’s anything wrong with that…just sayin’.

  22. Majosha says:

I loved this movie and firmly believe that it blows the original out of the water on every possible level. John Wayne is certainly an icon, but when it comes to talent, he’s no Jeff Bridges.

  23. Tiffany says:

I didn’t want to see it since I thought it was just a western but now I really want to see it! Thanks. I watched Fabulous Baker Boys the other day just to see Jeff Bridges. Love.

  24. telesma says:

Honestly, the only thing I really liked about this was the performances. The actors did a really good job. But overall, I much prefer the original with John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn.

  25. Jem says:

I was waiting for you guys to review this! I agree completely about Hailee Stienfeld – she was fantastic!

  26. Jilliterate says:

I absolutely loved this film, and Hailee Steinfeld is incredible in it. I’m actually quite angry that the studio campaigned for her to get a Supporting Actress award, rather than Best Actress. I know they didn’t want to put a new actor in a category where the competition would be harsh, but I think it’s kind of insulting to misrepresent her role in the film. It was her story, and she was the Best Actress.

  27. Sakyiwaa says:

    wow! i gotta see this.
