Tyra Fatigue: ‘America’s Next Top Model’ premiere doesn’t bring in ratings

While fledgling TV network The CW is enjoying some of its best ratings ever thanks to “Gossip Girl” and the revamped “90210,” its longest running series, “America’s Next Top Model,” starring Tyra Banks, isn’t faring quite as well. Last night’s season premiere of Cycle 11 opened to the worst ratings in the show’s history. I watched it last night, and I can’t say I’m surprised. First of all, the show is becoming almost as tediously scripted as “The Hills.” Last night’s season kickoff included a lame “Minority Report” style photoshoot with Tyra and the two Jays “beaming” onto the set, dressed in futuristic costumes and using bad special effects that would have made Captain Kirk barf. Additionally, the presence of Isis, a male-to-female transgendered contestant, who in all honesty, isn’t very attractive, is such an obvious ratings ploy. While it’s cool that any reality show is including a transgendered person, it’s painfully clear that Tyra and her producers selected Isis purely for the drama brought about by the other girls feeling uncomfortable – which feels mostly manufactured anyway.

After two days of glowing headlines for the CW, you just knew everybody’s favorite hard-luck network was going to have a change of fortune: Despite the CW’s stellar start this week with the return of “Gossip Girl” and unveiling of “90210,” Wednesday night’s “America’s Next Top Model” premiere was the lowest-rated in the network’s history.

The two-hour “Top Model” premiere (3.5 million viewers, 1.7 preliminary adults 18-49 rating and a 5 share) was down 11% from last February’s cycle, and down 32% from last September in the adult demo. Among the network’s 18-34 demo (1.9/6), the drops were steeper. It marks the lowest-rated premiere since the show debuted in 2003 on UPN.

Given all the heavy advertising of “90210” and “Gossip” running up to their premieres, it seems conceivable (if not highly likely) that efforts to promote awareness of the soap dramas may have come at the expense of the network’s highest-rated show. Then again, after running two editions for the past five years or so one would think “Model” fans would either not need too much prompting, or, more probable, feel the show is long in the tooth. This is Cycle 11, which is an extraordinary run for a reality show, and “Model” has slipped in the ratings for a few editions now. If the premiere week ratings horse race doesn’t change over the course of the season, the CW will have a new top-rated series.

I also think that the viewing public is sick of Tyra Banks. Her crazy ass is everywhere, and her shameless self promotion is starting to backfire. Plus, with so many new shows and better quality reality shows currently airing, such as the ever-fabulous “Project Runway,” which also runs on Wednesday nights, “Top Model” has a lot more competition these days.

ugh, i watched both hours of it last night. still delightfully trashy and amusing, but that model factory space age alien robot thing was annoying and had horrible production values. i will still watch though, not for tyra but for the crazies competing.

  2. manda says:

i have been a faithful watcher for years but did not tune in to the premier this season because of the whole Isis thing, it was obvious they chose Whitney last year solely because they wanted to have a plus sized model win and after seeing pictures of the Transgender model it became very apparent that they were going for shock value. I have been sick of Tyra for A LOOOOOONG time now and i really think the show could survive without her, it would most likely do better because everyone is so sick of hearing her talk about how to smile with your eyes…oh man i think i just threw up in my mouth a little.

  3. Megan says:

I bet the transgender girl will win for the same reason Whitney won last cycle.

  4. Jess Doherty says:

i did not see one pretty girl in that video…. i don’t think being a model really means anything at all.

After watching the premiere episode last night it felt as if Tyra is saying good bye and will be ahnding the reins over to Paulina. The whole Isis thing is purely a ratings ploy. Tyra and Isis have to know that no agency in the world would hire her. Plus she looks too much like a guy and walks horribly!

  6. Shannon says:

I’ve watched every cycle except this one because I hate Tyra and don’t want to support her show.

  7. Exiled says:

Wow, she even has makeup all over shoulders and chest… ugh.

  8. Linda says:

So disappointed – it was so cheesy with the lasers and beaming in and out. Jay trying to act like a robot…PLEASE.

Also, the transgender in there is strictly ratings and it’s a bad ratings ploy IMO. Honestly, does anyone really think that CoverGirl is going to use a transgender to sell cosmetics to women? Agree that the transgender looks way too male as well.

  9. Diva says:

Whitney won because she’s gorgeous, and she pulled off the challenges.

Isis will not win, but she’ll stay in awhile. It’s a TV show, of course they’re looking for ratings!

I didn’t watch last night because I was watching something even cattier, lol, but as I recall, it’s on repeat later in the week, so I’ll catch it then.

Oh, and that header pic of Tyra is BAAAAD, lol!

  10. Jenna says:

For some reason that header picture makes me feel like she is trying to cover up herpes. Don’t know why though.

Not to argue with you Diva (She is pretty and all) but they asked her to gain some major pounds to be on the season. Whitney had modeling experience before the show (as do some of the others I imagine). It was set after she gained those pounds that she would win.

  11. Enonymous says:

I do not want to be mean but Isis the transgendered contestant is one very unattractive lady (but good on her for being comfortable in who she is). I have seen some of the early ANTM cycles and they hardly had any actually physically attractive girls, most of them were pretty average and not that suited to be models.

  12. chaz says:

I really wouldn’t be surprised if Tyra actual was the first transgender model and she’s simply using Isis to “out” herself. i mean look at her! she was obviously a man at one time she just got her surgery before appearing on fresh prince. if Tyra WASN’T a man at one point she certainly is rapidly becoming one, i bet she has to shave her giant forehead. she really disgusts me, and she ain’t no Oprah!

  13. Megan says:

I agree with Linda, can you really imagine Covergirl using a transgender model to sell makeup, I really think not.

  14. Ryjapa says:

Have watched every season and liked them until last season. You are right, Whitney was hand picked to be the winner because Tyra has wanted a plus sized winner for a couple of seasons. However, I cannot watch the transgendered person…too much for me. Will not watch again. I don’t know why they have to push their agenda on us, she had a successful formula then had to go this route. Hope this is the last season.

  15. Sluggo says:

Great header photo of Tyra, or should I say Jesse Jackson in a blonde wig.

  16. Jeanne says:

Every series offers the same assortment of whiny, shallow, stupid, self-involved models who look ugly until they have their makeup on. That’s why I like the models on Project Runway–You never hear them. Models should be seen and not heard.

  17. valerie says:

surpriseeeee the fat chicks bitter. 🙄 and so what isis is trans? it’s 2008, open your mind.
