Grammys recap and winners – did you watch the whole thing? (Update: Videos)

Last night was the music industry’s biggest night and we were treated to a lot of excellent performances. I wish that the Oscars would follow the Grammys lead and try to make it entertaining for the masses. Three and a half hours is too long though and I started to get really tired toward the end. (I was watching in the morning too.) They should cut about half of it or try to spread it over a couple of nights.

* Christina Aguilera tried to dominate the tribute to Aretha Franklin with her Clockwork Orange eyelashes and over the top runs. The other divas knew less was more and Yolanda Adams and Jennifer Hudson were the real standouts. Florence Welch, Yolanda Adams and Martina McBride also belted out Aretha’s hits. I just wish she was there to watch it live. Aretha looked great in the clip they showed.

* Presenter Ricky’s Martin’s silver pants. That is all.

* Lady Gaga’s performed “Born This Way,” during which she came out of that lit-up pod as some kind of metaphor for being reborn. As far as her stunts go this one was pretty minor. I expected some sort of protoplasm or goo to be involved. Maybe that’s what the nude-colored latex stood for. I loved her pointy shoulders. I kept hearing “Express Yourself” in my head though, she even added a “Come On!” in the middle. That song is a major fail.

* Miranda Lambert performed “The House That Built Me.” That song evokes so many memories and I remember the first time I heard it on the radio. Her performance wasn’t that great though. She just kind of stood there.

* Presenter Lenny Kravitz was draped in black animal skins and chains like a post apocalyptic caveman.

* Muse (aka Kate Hudson’s boyfriend’s band) performed “Uprising.” They’re pretty damn good and the visual display that made it look like stuff was falling and breaking behind them while people fought on stage was awesome.

* Bruno Mars, B.O.B. and Janelle Monae did a softer medley of “Nothing on You,” followed by Mars doing an incredible retro version “Grenade.” Janelle Monae then belted out a rousing “Cold War.” There was a lot of talent on stage for that one.

* Justin Bieber and Usher reminisced about how they first met in 2007 and then Usher did an acoustic version of “Baby Baby” followed by a high production “Never Say Never” in which he strutted around on some scaffolding while surrounded by ninjas. Then Jaden Smith popped out of the ground to rap in his cheetah print leggings. The kid can dance. My favorite part was when they showed Will and Jada in the audience and they looked so proud.

Usher and his dancers in royal blue then did OMG, with Justin coming on stage to kneel underneath him at the finale. It was like Usher was taking his throne as king of the teenyboppers.

* Presenter Pauley Perrette from NCIS was wearing a ridiculous lime green dress with some black notes on it, and the chick from Paramore, Hayley Williams, had on a sequin black dress with a see-through panel in the middle and a fuschia ring of feathers at the mid-thigh hem. Coupled with her candy red hair it was too much.

*Muse’s Matt Bellamy gave a shout out to his “beautiful pregnant girlfriend over there” when his band won best rock album. The camera should have panned to Kate Hudson, but it didn’t.

* Lady Gaga won best pop album for Fame Monster. She had on a black sculptured body suit with exaggerated rib bones, ass and breasts. The audio cut out at the beginning so she must have sworn. Her speech was so over the top. “I had this dream when I was really young that I could be whatever I wanted to be.” She thanked Whitney Houston, saying “when I wrote Born this Way I imagined Whitney singing it, because I wasn’t secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar.” GMAFB. Shouldn’t she thank Madonna for writing the song?

* Mumford & Sons performed “The Cave” along with brass accompaniment. They didn’t have a backdrop or anything and they didn’t need it. The song was so good and they were so fired up.

* The Avett Brothers performed “Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise.” and then Bob Dylan came on stage with both bands to sing “Maggie’s Farm.” Everyone looked thrilled to jam with Dylan, and the result was all kinds of awesome.

* Lady Antebellum sang if “You Don’t Know Me By Now” and “American Honey.” They closed it out with their hit “Need you Now.” They then won Best Country Album.

* Jamie Foxx presented Cee Lo Green who did “Forget You” with Gwyneth Paltrow accompanied by dancing puppets. Cee Lo was wearing a bunch of feathers and looked like Elton John threw up all over him. Gwyneth came out in a low cut tight black catsuit with some killer shoes. She did a great job, I’ll grudgingly admit. It’s worth noting that Coldplay wasn’t nominated for anything so they weren’t there.

*Neil Patrick Harris presented Katy Perry with a little joke about how he had sex with her on TV and was left confused. Katy Perry sang “Not Like The Movies” while suspended on a bedazzled swing. Then she sang “Teenage Dream” in front of a Valentines backdrop. She is a tribute to autotune. I guess her wedding video was playing in the background but I wasn’t paying attention.

*Nora Jones, John Mayer and Keith Urban did an acoustic version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Perfection. Dolly should have been there! Mayer looked like he’d been on a bender.

* Seth Rogan joked that he was backstage getting high with Miley Cyrus. He introduced Rihanna, Eminem and Dr. Dre. Rihanna is another tribute to autotune. She did “Love The Way You Lie” with Eminem and he really worked the stage, moving on to “I Need a Doctor” with Dr. Dre.

* Esperanza Spalding won best new artist.

* Glee’s Matthew Morrison introduced the Grammy president Neil Portnow. They then did the tribute to artists lost.

* Mick Jagger did “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love.” This is when I really started zoning out. I mean Mick is awesome and everything but this was just too long.

* Kris Kristofferson presented Barbra Streisand, who did “Evergreen.” It was lovely.

* Nicki Minaj and Will.i.am presented best rap album, which Eminem won. He looked too skinny to me. He thanked Rihanna and gave a shout out to Detroit.* Diddy introduced Rihanna and Drake, who did “What’s My Name.” Diddy was kind of slow and stumbled over his words. Rihanna was sexy in a fringed bikini thing that matched her Ronald McDonald hair. I was mesmerized by the diamond design on her crotch.

* JLo and Skeletor introduced the record of the year. Marc Anthony started singing “Volare” and Lopez said “Papi, no” after which he scrunched up his face and rolled his eyes. I’m sure they practiced that but it felt like she was schooling him.

* Lady Antebellum won for “Need You Now”

* Jason Segal told some lame jokes to introduce Arcade Fire performing “Month of May.” It was kind of dizzying with a ton of strobes and flashing lights.

* Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand presented album of the year, which went to Arcade Fire for The Suburbs. I don’t think Barbra knew who they were because she said their album first.

Here’s a list of the winners: (more complete list here)

Pauly plays on NCIS not CSI 🙂

  2. flutters says:

Eminem did great (Rihanna not so much but I heard she was sick). One of my favorites along with Mumford & Sons, Janelle Monae, and Keith Urban/Norah Jones/Johnny Depp’s unattractive wannabe relative. I enjoyed the Avett Brothers too. I loved Bruno Mars’s new take on Grenade but he was straining his voice and hit a lot of bum notes. Also have to grudgingly admit that Gwyneth did great and that whole performance with Cee Lo Green was ridiculously entertaining and fun. They actually had good chemistry together.

Did anybody else catch Leann Rimes’s b****face after Miranda Lambert’s performance? I agree Miranda’s performance wasn’t very good but the song is wonderful.

Overall the show was MUCH better than last year’s. Lady Antebellum won too many awards. Dierks Bentley should’ve won for Best Country Album and I’d have rather Love The Way You Lie, “The Song Otherwise Known as Forget You” (lol), or Empire State Of Mind won Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.

  3. Celebitchy says:

Seven I will fix that thank you!

  4. dread pirate cuervo says:

I watched the whole thing & I thought it was pretty good. I had no idea who most of the people were, which made me feel superior in a way I haven’t felt since the late 80’s when my friends liked New Kids & I liked the Cure. Thanks Grammys! Lady Gaga’s cover of Express Yourself was lacking. I finally got to hear Bruno Mars & BoB. Cee-Lo is my Halloween inspiration; I like Gwyneth & loved her shoes.

  5. Isabel says:

CB, we neeeeeed to discuss the Cee-Lo/Goopy performance more in depth. It was awesome. It was Fraggle Rock. It was a giant parrot. It was Goopster in a catsuit outperforming many of the professional singers. It was simply amazing.

  6. dread pirate cuervo says:

Also, Eminem is a hot piece. The dope fiend look just does it for me. I can’t help it. Did you see Nicole Kidman singing along to Katy Perry? I bet her & Tom Cruise have more in common than they thought! Loved Mumford & Sons. Finally heard Justin Bieber & it hurt my ears. Rhianna & her Vajazzle & her wig? Just make it stop. She looked skanky, not sexy.

  7. ThirdChris says:

I have a stupid question…what’s the difference between Record of the Year, and Album of the Year?

  8. Mandy says:

I know Gaga’s new song sounds like Madonna, but I still like it about a thousand times more, mainly because I can’t stand Madonna anymore. Lady Gaga has fun with her persona, and Madonna forgot how to do that a long damn time ago. Now she’s just about dating men young enough to be her sons and bullshit religious nonsense and gristle.

  9. Tess says:

    Fairly unwatchable.

Fact: There’s no there there applies to GaGa. She delivers not much other than old-fashioned rip-offs topped off with a heaping side of pretention.

To last she’ll need to figure out who she is, rather than taking the simple way out and defining her audience, which primarily consists of the young and impressionable.

  10. devilgirl says:

I thought Em and Rihanna were great.

I also thought it was cute how Kidman got into a few of the performances.

  11. TG says:

Justin souned terrible on his opening song where it was obvious he was singing live. Makes me think he is another fraud can we say he pulled a swifty.

  12. renai(jrt) says:

didnt watch and from the recaps didnt miss anything.

  13. Kiki says:

I hadn’t watched the Grammys in a long time. I dislike Lady Gaga but I have to admit, she’s a true artist… Loved her last night.
    Also Eminem… Love him… sigh…

  14. Ashley says:

I can’t believe everyone thinks its ok to cut out what parts of the awards we should see down to ten awards, and instead be made to sit thru shit like Justin Bieber. If you are going to do a show of minimal awards and lots of performances, make it worth my time…like Herbie Hancock should have performed. And Cee Lo and Florence and the Machine were robbed.

  15. ladycj says:

I loved seeing Nicole Kidman dancing and singing Katy Perry’s song. And Ricky Martins pants made my husband laugh so loud we woke our kids. I think they would have been better if they were darker.

  16. ladycj says:

  17. the_porscha says:

@ Flutters: I’d believe that (about Rihanna) if she didn’t perform like that every time. She really is useless on stage, and it’s annoying.

I loved Cee Lo’s performance, even with Goopy all over it. It was fun and a tribute to his very, very visual stage shows. He’s great and he and Paltrow looked like they were having fun.

Eminem did well and I’m glad he won. I wish they’d shown the girl who sang the chorus for “I Need a Doctor.” She hit all her notes and didn’t get a single spotlight. I don’t know if it’s the same girl on the original track, but still.

Overall, it was okay. I watched off and on… it was just too damn long. I think Lady Antebellum should’ve won less awards. Good song but it was kind of unreal that they kept winning. Whatever.

  18. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

When Bieber came on my 2 1/2 year old son yelled “no mommy turn off!” Ah, from the mouth of babes!

  19. Solveig says:

Can’t stand the Grammys, it’s just a Trash Exibition of untalented artists.
It’s odd to see The Arcade Fire among those ridiculous singers, by the way, they are too good.
GaGa should quit acting like she’s Madonna, because she’s not. And Madonna is still alive, she doesn’t need a substitute.

  20. kelbear says:

I thought since Gaga did this whole egg thing she was going to incorporate it more into her performance. Like maybe she would hatch out of it or something, kind of like the part in Ace Ventura where he comes out of the rhino’s butt lol.

  21. mia girl says:

@flutter “Johnny Depp’s unattractive wannabe relative” Hilarious and very true.

@ladycj I totally agree how surprisingly great it was to see Kidman singing along/really getting into Teenage Dream. If I had an Oscar ballot in front of me, I would have scratched out Portman and checked off Kidman that very instant!

@celebitchy Agree there were great performances – Mumford and Sons/Avett Bros/Dylan were the best, followed by Mars, BOB & Jannelle Monea. Eminen always great. I wish Nora Jones/Mayer/Urban would have performed the whole song!

I thought Arcade Fire was pretty disjointed and actually, kinda lame. I was expecting more from them.

  22. JRD says:

Ohhh Ricky Martin….I know he’s gay and it’s been about 12 years since I saw him live, but I’d still nail that to the wall. I nominate him for HGF.

  23. MSat says:

Two things that made me happy: Muse performing “Uprising” live. Wow! That’s how it’s done.

Also: soul legend Mavis Staples gets a Grammy ofter almost 50 years in the indusry; Bieber gets passed over for “best new artist.” There’s some justice in that.

  24. My Darling Pinkett says:

Cee Lo Green, Mick Jagger, Eminem, Mumford and Sons, and Arcade Fire were the biggest highlights for me. I’m still ticked that Lady Antebellum won so much! A lot of other artists were cheated. And I hated the opening, although some of the singers were good.

It was probably the first time I watched the entire Grammys. Overall it was a little painful, but a few performances were worth watching. And the ending was definitely worth it. Yay Arcade Fire!!!!

  25. Cherry Rose says:

Ah, it made my evening when Arcade Fire won Album of the Year. So nice. :]

  26. L says:

@thirdchris Song of the year is for songwriting, record of the year is for producing/engineers. So the same song can be nominated for both, but the awards recognize different parts of the recording process.

  27. Jezi says:

I thought Rihanna did well in both performances, I thought her and Drake were going to get it on later that night cause their sexual chemistry on stage was….hmmm hmmm good. I didn’t really get into the Lady Gaga performance like I thought I would. It was entertaining but she needs to do something different. It seems to be all the same now.

  28. mymy says:

No did not watch it. Music today sucks. If everyone would just not watch it. Perhaps they would get the message. We want talent.Plenty of good artist that will never see the light of day. So contrived .

  29. Lentil says:

I liked Katy Perry’s performance more than Lady Gaga’s, so…that’s worrying me, I’m not going to lie.

I’ve seen Mumford & Sons twice (kind of by accident, I’m not the folksy equivalent of a Deadhead) and even though they’re not my favourite band, they’re absolutely fantastic live just because of the pure talent, and because they seem genuinely thrilled to have fans.

Ah, British dudes. You don’t disappoint.

  30. macey says:

    @the_porscha

That girl with Eminem and Dr. Dre was Skyler Grey. She actually wrote most of LTWYL and later released her own version of LTWYL2 (the one Rihanna has on her album). She’s awesome. I wish she would have done the back vocals for both versions so i can actually listen to them. Rihanna’s autotune voice totally ruins that song for me.

  31. flutters says:

@the_porscha You’re probably right about Rihanna. I usually don’t watch her performances bc I can only take her in small doses.

The name of the girl who sang I Need A Doctor at the Grammys is Skylar Grey and she sings it on the record too. I agree she was very good.

  32. daisy424 says:

After Miranda Lambert performed “The House That Built Me”, the camera panned the audience applauding.

Did anyone else catch LeAnn Rimes mouthing F-ing Bitch?

  33. SassyBritches says:

@ThirdChris: definitely not a stupid question, it’s confusing!

-Album of the Year: Award for the entire album
-Record of the Year: Award for an individual song, awarded to the artist
-Song of the Year: Award for an individual song, awarded to the songwriter.

    Hope that helps!

  34. KV says:

Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers were the best part of the night… Both bands are sooo talented! Loved it!

  35. Liana says:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for a track from an album. The artist, producers, and engineers get that award.

Song of the Year is for a single or individual track, but it goes to the songwriter.

Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album (artist, producer, and engineers)

  36. Ferguson. says:

Yes, Lady G. at the beginning said: “Oh shit”.

  37. original kate says:

so now gaga is ripping off spinal tap? too bad she didn’t get her arm caught as she was getting out of her pod. “it’s a rock n roll creation! it’s the ultimate rebirth! i looked and i saw that it was GOOD!”

  38. MSat says:

One other note: I would have liked to have seen some kind of tribute to Ronnie James Dio other than being included for a half a second in the “people who died last year” video montage. The man was THE defining voice of hard rock for three decades. Hard rock always gets the big shaft at the Grammys. Boo!

  39. Dana M says:

The Lady Antebellum song Need You Now sounds just like the 80s song Eye in the Sky from Alan Parsons Project. I was not able to sleep last night until I finally figured out the song it reminded me of:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS1z2inwJ2o&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  40. Amanda says:

J.Lo and Marc were awkward together. I thought they were trying to pull off a Sonny and Cher kinda vibe…but it was just awkward.

  41. TXCinderella says:

Was the Gaga egg thing an ode to Mork & Mindy? I love Gaga’s music, but she is weird.

  42. win-win says:

I was actually impressed with the grammys last night (maybe my expectations are really low…thought the grammys sucked for a long time) but I thought there was a wide range of talent from different genres (people who could actually play instruments instead of just pop-y singers *side-eye to Justin Beiber*)..favs were Mumford & Sons, Muse (amazing visuals!!), Cee Lo (I was laughing so hard…it was so fun and entertaining..LOVED the costume) and Nora, John Mayer and Keith covering Jolene…
you’re right Kaiser, halfway through, I thought “if only the Oscars were this entertaining”

  43. win-win says:

also wanted to add: they started losing me at the exact same time you mentioned Kaiser.. Mick Jagger was good, but long and I was ready for the end. Barbra was great, but wish it was earlier…Grammy organizers should learn less is more with performances

  44. original kate says:

@ msat: i agree. i guess if ronnie had arrived onstage in a pod the grammys would pay more attention. yes, yes he was talented but did he wear a meat suit?

  45. Salina says:

Anyonee upload the video of leann? It was gif worthy lol

  46. I Choose Me says:

I just watched the whole Aretha Franklin tribute and I have to say all the ladies, including Christina did a fantastic job. My fave solos were J. Hud’s and Yolanda Adams’ though.

  47. grace says:

Katy Perry trying to dance is hilarious. And her trying to sing is painful… lol

  48. JenJen says:

Mic Jagger was great, fun and happy. Too bad he had to play to a bunch of bumps on a log. How many people were dancing or even moving?

  49. Liana says:

One other note: I would have liked to have seen some kind of tribute to Ronnie James Dio other than being included for a half a second in the “people who died last year” video montage. The man was THE defining voice of hard rock for three decades. Hard rock always gets the big shaft at the Grammys. Boo!
    *************

Yeah, he deserved more than a quick shot. They left out my friend Peter Steele from Type O Negative, too. He died last April.

  50. Louise says:

I actually enjoyed Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers but thought Bob Dylan ruined it with his mumbling singing.

  51. Dee Vine says:

Yes lady antebellum’s song is an exact note for note ripoff at the chorus. Realized it the first time I heard it. That was quite a popular song in the 80s. Surprised no one called it out earlier, or now after they won so many awards for that song.

  52. Tiffany says:

Muse is the greatest rock band on the planet right now. Have been for a while. Enough said.

Aretha’s clips were amazing, she is the true Queen. Damn! Yolanda and Jennifer were great, but man gimme some Aretha and Gladys Knight any day.

Gaga, you are the best songwriter and voice in the biz, you say? FAIL! Ugh. Music not high art, idiot.

Love me some Cee-lo Greene, great album, very throwback to some old R&B, Sam Cooke style.

Why did Matt Bellamy have to hook up with Kate Hudson? Why? Talk about a rock star groupie. Wonder if she will ruin his career like she did her last hubby?

My husband is in the music biz for a looong time and I love seeing real acts and just HATE the fake pop stars. Thank God he never had to sell his soul to make it in this f’up biz. Rihanna and Bieber, can you hear me? Gaga this definitely means you. Mix Express yourself with a little Vogue thrown in with a faster beat and out pops Born this way(with horns right? Mom must of loved that coming out of the birth canal!) Alejandro sounds like La Isla Bonita. Gag me.

Please someone buy Rihanna some class. Katy showed up sans Russell? Is there trouble in crazy eyed land???

  53. Iggles says:

Wow, the Aretha Franklin tribute was AWESOME!!! I was thoroughly entertained!! Loved it!

Christina tried, but she reined it in. I love how JHud stepped back and deferred to Yolanda Adams. Showing respect for the elders and true class. We all know Jennifer Hudson can belt it out but she was a team player.

Did any of you guys see the first VH1’s Diva’s live?? Aretha was on there, with Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, etc.

Aretha went super diva and co-opted the ending like a true queen. I felt bad for the other divas, but it’s Aretha Franklin! She was amazing. Celine tried to get a note in at the end and Aretha wasn’t having that. It was the most awesome diva takedown I’ve seen in concert!

  54. slim27 says:

gwyneth actually looked stunning and rocked that perfomance.

  55. Kayla says:

MUMFORD AND SONS! They’re such an incredible band, with amazing talent and energy. Was so thrilled when Arcade Fire won.
