WooHoo! This is just what the doctor ordered. New Cate Blanchett photos! Huzzah! Cate got all dressed up and dolled out in New York last night. She attended an event for Van Cleef & Arpels. It was a gala called Set In Style: The Jewelry Of Van Cleef & Arpels. She wore Balenciaga, and jewelry by Van Cleef, of course. The dress is… slightly boring, but I love it. The fit is good, and Cate could make a potato sack look fashion-forward, so I’m not really complaining. I love a good v-neck/cap-sleeve ensemble. It’s a cut that flatters many women, especially us busty ladies (which Cate is not). I think Cate probably wanted to wear something simple and elegant so that people would pay attention to the jewels. And they are fabulous.
Here’s my complaint, though: Cate’s hair and her lipstick. Remember Cate in Switzerland last month? She wore a meanswear-inspired suit and too-bright coral lipstick. And now this lipstick, which is still an awful shade of coral. I am worried that Cate is developing a mid-life lipstick trauma.
As for her hair… well, Cate isn’t a hair person. I would have love to see her do a shaggy Mick Jagger thing in a dirty blonde. I think she would look years younger like that. This style is much too matronly. But I will say this – in these photos, she’s looking like the love child of My Favorite Alien, Tilda Swinton, and My Forever Biscuit Emma Thompson. And that’s wonderful.

First thought upon seeing the header pic and before reading anything? ‘Wow, great dress, shame about the hair and makeup’ – and no, that is not an attempt to suck up to the Bieber hatin’ Kaiser, who is my mortal enemy along with all the other non Beliebers here. Seriously, that dress ROCKS. The cut is incredible.

She is looking awfully thin! And I agree about her hair, but she still looks amazing and I love her.

The dress would have been very nice but the seam down the middle just ruins it for me. It looks like two halves were stitched together in a sewing class. However, she is beautiful.

Cate is thin, this dress only accentuates it. Maybe it would have been better in a different color, and the cut stretches her torso in an unfortunate way.
I agree that her lipstick is too harsh.
Gorgeous, and I love her, but I’m going to have to weigh in with the commentors who think this would look better if she was in the habit of eating cheesburgers occasionally.
The lipstick might not have seemed so jarring if her hair were darker or if this dress had been a jewel tone like royal blue or deep purple, but she usually looks best in peachy lipsticks because she’s so fair. Also, while I love the dress for the most part, I kind of wish the sleeves were a bit more fitted.
She’s still crazy beautiful though, even with the slightly dowdy hair and the overly bright lipstick.

She’s beautiful but gosh does she look like she’s lost a lot of weight. I hope she’s not sick or anything.

How many times a week does Kaiser refer to the size of her boobs? And before anybody asks, no I don’t have small ones, so that’s not why I’m asking! I noticed it recently, and now I can’t stop noticing it.
Love the style of the dress but the fabric looks cheap. Imagine that dress in jersey or something less bridal like with a bit more movement. That would be spectacular! I like the color of the lipstick. With such a plain dress and hair the same color as her skin, if it wasn’t for her lipstick, she’d fade away. I would suggest she go with something the same color but with more gloss to soften the look.
Lollypop head springs to mind…I’ve never really noticed how thin she is before, so maybe it is the dress.

Perhaps Kaiser mentions the size of her boobs because she realizes that being busty can be/is a pain in the arse and there are many fashions we can’t wear due to the size of our bosoms.

Beautiful, but she needs more color on her hair. Too pale for her the way it is now.
She’s so beautiful, I like the make-up, the hair and the dress is cute too, but it makes her head huge.
Way too matronly and she looks like she could be well into her 50s here. Normally, I can’t find a thing wrong with Cate B but this is a miss, big time.

Love the dress, she always rocks her fashions, good or bad. She’s always been thin, I remember a metallic gown she wore years back and she had the flattest stomach ever, and I think it was after kids.
I think she would look good with her hair a bit darker though.
The dress does NOT fit her. It’s strangely wrinkly and empty above her breasts and around her shoulders. It’s horribly wrinkly and bunchy around her waist and hips. There are fitting techniques to avoid those problems in dresses, especially couture dresses.
Her hair is grey. You can see she has white grey roots. Trying to dye blond over grey always looks off. I think she should just embrace it and go white, a la Helen Mirren. Yes, it would wash her out, but at some point you just have to go with it and wear a little more blush.
Love the dress and the jewelry but the lipstick is too bright and the hairstyle does nothing for her.

I almost can’t bear to be negative about this totally fabulous woman, but hair and make-up need a change. And a cheeseburger wouldn’t hurt. The dress is perfection especially since it’s meant to be window dressing for the sparkles.
She can wear what she wants. No claws. She is Cate and she is the shiz. I think the necklace softens it a lot.

She really looks bobble-headed and normally I think she looks so good! She did go through a stage where she looked anorexic and she got so thin, it was scary. But then she put on a few pounds and looked perfect.

love her, love the dress (not the seam down the front lower half), lips are better this time but she needs to bring out her eyes more to balance the severity of color. and lord she needs to watch what she wears because i had never noticed before how unbelievably humongus her head is.
I think the cut of the shoulders on the dress serves to make her head look wider than it actually is. If you look at where her shoulders actually end vs. her head it doesn’t look as big. If that makes any sense to you.

I’m usually onboard with her unique style choices but I’m not feeling this. I don’t like her lipstick or the hair and the dress is a satin bore. The necklace though, I like it alot. Oh and I agree that she looks like a bobble-head in these photos. Could be just a case of the big-head though as she’s always been svelte.

The hair color washes her out. I am stunned that not one call her skelletic. She is thin and it’s ok but she should add some color in her hair.
