In a spectacularly fabulous ceremony, George Takei married his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman, on Sunday at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The groom and groom were dressed alike in white dinner jackets and black pants. Hopefully the waiters were not.
Takei and Altman walked down the aisle together to “One Singular Sensation”. I wish I would have thought of that when I got married. I was bummed I didn’t see Muriel’s Wedding until after I got married because I would have made my dad walk me down the aisle to ABBA, but a song from A Chorus Line? Too excellent! My ex probably would have picked the tits and ass one, though, which, obviously, is why he’s my ex.
But, I digress.
At the altar, the wedding couple stood in a circle of yellow roses and lillies, where a Buddhist priest wed them in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. They exchanged Native American wedding bands and walked out amongst cheers to the music of a Scottish bagpipe. I think they had all their ethnic bases covered.
Takei, who is 71, and Altman, 54, wrote their own vows.
Altman said that he had called Takei many things during their two decades together — “life partner, significant other” — but that their marriage represented “a dream come true for me.”
“I can add ‘my husband’ to the list of things I call you,” he said.
Takei called his longtime partner an “organized, detail-obsessed, punctuality-driven control freak.”
“I’m easygoing with details, so we’re a good fit,” he said in the trademark baritone recognizable to all “Star Trek” and Howard Stern fans.
“I vow to care for you as you’ve cared for me … and to love you as my husband and the only man in my life,” Takei said as he held Altman’s hands.
The priest then pronounced them “spouses for life.”

Star Trek alumn Walter Koenig (Cmdr. Chekov) and Nichelle Nichols (Cmdr. Uhura) were the couple’s Best Man and Best Lady.
And no, I’m not going to make the Live Long and Prosper joke.
Wow, good for them. They’ve been together more than most couples.
This is wonderful. Look how happy they are! Key to living a long time – don’t stop living!
I see Mr. Spock raising his eyebrow and Scotty fuming by the photon torpedo’s.
Wow, it sounds like it was a lovely ceremony, and I think it’s adorable. They look so very happy.
I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and I found him to be very charming and down to earth. He told great stories of his Star Trek days and was just extremely gracious to us fans. I wish him much happiness! 😀
Good for them! They deserve much happiness, and kudos for them being together for so long! I’m glad that the other Trek friends were there, too. Wonderful day, good luck!!
This is wonderful! These guys have been together for 21 years. By any standards, let alone Hollywood, that should be a recognized and celebrated commitment!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BOTH OF THEM !!.what a long time they have waited for their happy day..plus they LOOK happy and content…Good for them!
Many, many heartfelt congratulations to Brad and George! They look so happy! I wish them all the best and much happiness until the very end, which is hopefully a really long way away.
It’s great that they tied the knot, I think George had been waiting for this for a long time and he hadn’t always had it easy being a gay Hollywood actor, back in the original Star Trek days when nobody could know.
Yay!!!
They look insanely happy! I am so elated for them! I hope they make it last forever.
I don’t know why, but I thought they had gotten married a couple of months ago. Regardless, good for them!
Grats, and it’s about time.
So so happy for them. 🙂
Yay that Sulu got married! They look so happy. Those two have been together for just a bit over two decades. Way longer than a lot of heterosexual couples and that goes to show the uber-conservative religious naysayers that being homosexual is evil and dangerous. How can it be evil and dangerous when you’ve got a couple that has been together that long, spouses in every way but in law, finally getting a chance to legally get married? Congrats to George and Brad! 😀
There is just something incredibly cute about that whole thing. I wonder if they like watching the Star Trek episode where Sulu is running around topless, sweaty-chested, with a rapier. Very hot.
(as a Trekkie saying this, I’m not really being tongue in cheek)..
“I can add ‘my husband’ to the list of things I call you,”
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
*melts*
The key to a successful relationship… don’t get married. Strange how that works.
Congratulations and a long and happy marriage to them
As lovely as this story is, am I the only one being distracted by “Chechov’s” marvellous head of hair? (BTW, in the paper I saw that on his arm is the lady who played Uhura (?) – she looked fantastic too – key to looking good when you’re in your 70s – be on Star Trek!)
One can only hope they stay together.
As soon as I read this, I ran like the wind around my dorm trying to find someone else who gave a shit. I came up dry and had to celebrate by myself for a minute.
