Anonymous pranks Oprah – or was it someone trying to discredit Anonymous?

Oprah Winfrey did a serious episode about pedophilia, but when it came to understanding the online activities of that despicable population she fell for a stupid posting on one of her message boards referencing the group Anonymous. Oprah got all serious like the pedophiles were telling her they were organized, and said:

“Let me read you something from our message boards about someone who claims to be from a known pedophile network. It said this. ‘He doesn’t forgive, he doesn’t forget, his group has over 9,000 penises, and they’re all raping children.’ So, I want you to know, they’re organized, and they have systematic ways of hurting children, and they use the Internet to do it.”

Anonymous is a loosely based group of people online who have made it their recent mission to protest the Scientology cult and bring awareness to the cult’s illegal activities. Their motto is “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget.” The 9,000 reference is an Internet meme that’s used by the group to reference their number of members, which is unknown and is likely much higher. They’re just a bunch of Internet-savvy people, predominantly younger, but they’ve been routinely called pedophiles by Scientologists. They’re also not that organized – anyone anywhere can claim to be from Anonymous and pull stunts like this trying to discredit them. What a coincidence that someone used Anonymous’ motto on Oprah’s message board of all places and claimed to be a pedophile. I’ve seen videos on YouTube in which Scientologists accuse their detractors of that very thing.

It’s not funny to joke about being a pedophile and raping children, and who would do that except someone trying to smear the group? Oprah’s people should have some clue about the Internet, and the fact that they fell for this obvious reference to Anonymous, which has received coverage even in the mainstream press, makes me wonder how much else in this story Oprah aired – which I did not see – was hype. Of course pedophilia is serious and threatening and we should keep our children safe, but should we get scared and freaked out about it like the whole Internet is unsafe, or take measures to make sure our kids’ activities online are monitored and we know what they’re doing?

Shame on Oprah’s entire staff for falling for that stupid posting and putting it on the air. They should issue a retraction admitting they were duped.

Here’s wikipedia’s entry on Anonymous along with their anti-Scientology efforts, Project Chanology. The Encyclopedia Dramatica (ads NSFW) is also a way to see how some members of Anonymous take the threats against them – with humor and inside jokes. It’s possible a rogue member posted on Oprah’s message board, but I would bet it’s someone trying to make them look bad. They ended up mostly making Oprah look clueless.

Moderately related update: Here’s a link to a video of Scientologists harassing people at the NY protest. They yelled repeatedly at them, handed out flyers with the names of Anonymous members and even had a pamphlet in Scientolo-speak claiming they have no morality and laugh at tragedy. At around 4:00 minutes in a guy starts yelling about how they need to take their medication. They’re exercising the Scientology concept of “fair game” or “attack the attacker.”

Thanks to ONTD for the heads up on this story.

Oprah: So rich, so powerful, SO STOOPID. 😯

How is it possible for her, and more pertinently, her researchers, to be so out of the loop on this? Her credibility IMO took a huge dive with Cruise and this is not going to help restore it.

  2. SolitaryAngel says:

I, too, changed my mind about Oprah when the couch–jumping thing aired. Now, I can’t stand to even hear her name. It’s really a shame, because she, by way of her show, really enlightened people and dealt with important topics. Now, Oprah=Tom Cruise=stupid and worthless to me.

  3. Megan says:

That sounds like someone just trying to pwn Oprah, and it worked. Anonymous don’t have to claim they did it, of course they did it. And ‘they’ doesn’t really have any meaning either.

The point is, Oprah’s an idiot for taking it seriously. She just made herself look like even more of a douchebag.

  4. Anon says:

While the old-school Anonymous does tend delight in being as callous and jaded as possible, I don’t think this came from them – mostly because I don’t think any of them are quite this stupid.

In addition to your article (which is very well researched by the way, the print and broadcast media should do half so well) you might look into what happened with Chris Forcand – a pedophile who was arrested because Anons exposed him. Anonymous regularly goes ‘pedo-baiting’ ie, pretending to be little girls in chatrooms, and exposing who they end up talking to. It’s a shame that Oprah’s staff didn’t dig a little deeper.

in before Lola OMG ANONYMOUS EVUL TOLDYOUSO

  5. geronimo says:

Agree, Anon, on the digging deeper. Just another reason why her and her team’s ignorance is so nauseating here, see how quick she was to jump, all self-importantly, on the ‘sensationalist’ bandwagon. Anything for viewing figs, eh. 🙄

  6. Megan says:

I agree geronimo, both Tyra and Oprah and all the other idiot chat show hosts and news channels always want to OVER EMPHASIZE how dangerous it is for your children to use the internet or have anything to do with an adult male other than their own father (and even HE is probably a pedophile!) It’s just obsessive sensationalist crap, making people lock their children indoors to make sure they don’t get stolen by a pedophile. OMG OVER 9000 PENISES, how will we ever defend ourselves?!

  7. vdantev says:

About 60 billion people know that motto, some people are just rich AND stupid. 🙄

  8. prissa says:

Has anyone heard about Travis Barker and DJ AM in a plane crash this morning? Officials say a Learjet has crashed while departing from a Columbia, S.C., airport, killing four people on board and critically injuring two others — ex-Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and “DJ AM” Adam Goldstein.

    Details please CB!!!

  9. RAN says:

Just saw it on MSNBC Prissa – here’s the link:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26803108

  10. Celebitchy says:

Wow I did not hear about that crash yet! I will post that soon. That’s awful.

  11. Leandra says:

Oprah should not be criticized and trashed for trying to help these poor suffering children. Obviously her staff was not on the ball here. People who think pedohilia is not rampant and children are not being abused in huge numbers everywhere are living in a dream world. You don’t live it – you don’t know it.

  12. Kaiser says:

Maybe Oprah didn’t make a mistake… maybe she’s actively trying to discredit Anonymous to help out her Scientology buddies (Cruise, Travolta).

    Just sayin’. 😡

  13. E. DuBois says:

Oprah and her staff are seriously misinformed – I saw the show and the minute she said it, I thought it was bogus. I think the reason so much mainstream media wants to discredit the internet as this dangerous place is to put parents (who generally are less well informed about it) in a position where they will only sanction commercial, corporate media on the web and thereby push all the alternative, creative, unique stuff on the web off. It’s a power grab. Just as what has happened with radio.

  14. Anne says:

I stopped watching Oprah when I was a teenager. I have seen clips or her ‘favourite things’ episodes, etc, and it’s pretty disgusting. She has lost touch. Hence, she doesn’t know what or who Anonymous is.

  15. geronimo says:

@E DuBois – interesting. Certainly agree there’s a huge fear-instillation and control factor at play as far as paedophilia on the net is concerned. The media seems to go through regular bouts of near-hysteria on this subject, a lot of the time counter-productive and at the expense of logic and rational thought. But, off-topic for here so I’m going to leave it alone!

  16. Emily says:

From the responses of pro anonymous posters, I worry about this group. You all come off as vicious and intolerant. And that motto of we never forgive and we never forget is scary too. I am not at all sure that this group is not going to turn into something dangerous. This has happened in the past, where vigilante groups start out as harmless only to go on to attack people and turn out to be another ultra intolerant group.

Even on this site, Celebitchy is pro anonymous and helps them all the time, yet when someone posts against the group, sometimes their posts are deleted. Is that freedom of speech that you criticise scientologists about? If you are fighting fro freedom of speech then post all comments including those against this so called anonymous.

  17. It was probably the latest scheme by the goons of CO$. Their last one was to have a bunch of Anonymous sympathizers taken down on YouTube (yet again) by reporting alleged copyright violations and community guidelines.

Amazingly, my account was suspended during the last wave about two weeks ago. Two of my videos were reported as community violations, so I was suspended for two weeks even though those videos still exist elsewhere on YouTube. Although these videos didn’t contain any CO$-related material, I am an outspoken sympathizer for Anonymous and have been cited several times in the forums their members inhabit online (Enturbulation, Operation Clambake, Ex-Sci Kids). So, I found it an odd coincidence that my account was targeted during that wave of complaints, especially when I’ve never had any prior issues on YouTube.

  18. Celebitchy says:

Emily, your cult is a lot scarier and there are several well documented cases of people being killed by Scientology. Maybe in 15-20 years when you’ve wasted a good portion of your money and life you’ll realize what a mistake you made in exchange for instant friends and faux enlightenment. Go ahead and keep thinking it’s Anonymous that’s the violent one in the mean time despite the fact that all they do is protest and point out what a ridiculous cult Scientology is.

I’m sorry that happened to you, Agent. That’s pretty typical of them and completely unfair.

  19. Emily, the “free speech” you refer to is outlined as a specific clause within the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Only governmental entities are bound by the free speech clause. This does not apply to private entities, which includes this website. Celebitchy can run this website as she pleases.

  20. anony says:

Did someone really work the pseudo word ‘pwn’ into a sentence? Jesus Christ. Just…no.

And Oprah is over. Her wonderful magazine plugging her so called ‘favorite things’ (This lovely little $300 pair of alpaca socks I like to slip on during my flights on my jet.. and this $50 soap is DIVINE! SO fresh!) is ridiculous. I love her penchant for promoting charlatans and new age self appointed gurus as well. She launched Dr. (GET REAL! TIME TO GIT REAL!) Phil.
Her ‘big give’ is just mass onanism and she is not a religion. Sorry Oprah.

  21. Abby says:

    It’s not entirely bogus.

I saw a recent show last week about the topic. Law enforcement spoke of the child porn industry and how they track the largest traders. They trade personally taken photographs and videos from their exploitation of children. So she probably assumed the post was from a member of people in that nasty group, responding to the show I saw.

  22. geronimo says:

God. How many more people are going to miss the point by a long mile??

She/her research team should have immediately clocked that it was coming from a questionable source BY THE LANGUAGE USED IN THE MESSAGE!!! The ‘He doesn’t forgive, he doesn’t forget’ the ‘9,000 penises’.

FFS. And she expects to be taken seriously?

  23. daisy424 says:

    Amen Geronimo 😉

    Oprah = phony 😡

  24. anony says:

People have the right to comment on the posted topic regardless of the perceived ‘point’.

  25. geronimo says:

Yes, you’re right. Sorry. (Rant directed at Oprah’s stupidity, not at other posters.)

  26. anony says:

S’ok , G- I know I can be pretty random and all but I kind of purposely avoided mentioning the topic b/c it it kind of freaks me out. I guess I couldn’t see the humor of what the pranksters were doing b/c nothing is funny about pedos.. so bog old Oprah was easier to pooh pooh (sp?)
Meh. I’m just your average ADHD gal.

  27. Amy says:

I’m sure there are organized groups of pedophiles (NAMBLA, for instance) online, so I applaud Oprah for targeting these monsters.

I’m not an Oprah fan by any means, but that is a good fight.

That being said, she needs to fire her fact checkers, STAT! I wouldn’t be surprised if the Co$ was behind this. Oprah probably already has it out for Anonymous because of her cult-following buddies. She is out of touch, like you guys say.

I would be surprised if Oprah could even turn on a computer and log into the Internet without assistance. There was an episode of Oprah where she and Gayle go on a roadtrip — they couldn’t even gas up the car properly!!

  28. geronimo says:

    No prob, anony. 8)
But that was really my point. Nothing funny at all here – the utter stupidity, the message, the sick mindset behind the message, wherever and whoever it’s come from – humour-free zone all round.

  29. A.J. says:

It was just Anonymous doing what Anonymous does best- trolling someone and making them look stupid. In this case it was Oprah who took the bait. Epic.

    Nothing new 🙂

  30. Mairead says:

I disagree – it strikes me as a cloaked jibe at Anonymous by someone who thinks they’re “fair game”. Isn’t that right Emily?

There are definitely a significant number of very organised paedophile groups trading in images at the very least on the internet. But these people are very very very careful not to draw attention to themselves, so to do anything which could draw attention to themselves (even if posting from an internet cafe), just does not ring true for me.

And thanks for trying to clear up the wanton misrepresentation of “freedom of speech” agent bedhead. Stay strong.

geronimo does have an excellent point about the level of hysteria the media can indulge in on this matter – especially during silly season (late summer/early autumn).

Brass Eye’s critque on this remains as relevant as ever. it’s the one that was wrongly banned. It showed the reckless attitude people have towards this subject – winding up concentrating on the bogeyman, rather than teaching children to be confident of reporting any untoward behaviour – especially from the places its most likely to come from, like within the family. The most memorable bit for me is where Gary Lineker (former footballer) held up a photo of a mountain with a little dot on it. He said that if you showed the photo to a paedophile he’d do everything in his power to get that child in the photo. 🙄

  31. geronimo says:

Agree, Mairead, definitely think it came from a source other than Anonymous – so much good will towards them and what they’re doing, it would be entirely counter-productive of them to do this.

Re Brass Eye, still one of Chris Morris’s best and deadliest pieces of TV. But the irony! A clear as glass message, understood, welcomed and applauded by a minority of people and misinterpreted wildly, hysterically and mouth-foamingly by a majority the day after transmission! I can still remember clearly all the long, drawn-out arguments I had the following day at work about it.

  32. Mairead says:

sounds like we were one of the minority who actually watched the original broadcast. Some of it cut really close to the bone, but it was such an important programme to show after the hysterical and dangerous campaign waged by Rebekah Wade then of the News of the World and now of The Sun post-Sarah Payne tragedy.

Oprah just exudes this all-consuming earnestness, and such is her quest to ‘make a difference” that she and her team are oblivious to any irony whatsoever.

  33. Diva says:

I’m on day three of a migraine here, so maybe my thoughts aren’t completely thought out, but in reading this story, in combination with the leaked Palin email story, the following comes to my pain adled mind…

The Church of Scientology is long known for back door antics to discredit, ruin, and kill people and organizations who speak out against them. All of the sudden, we have two instances in the same week that Anonymous very publically makes a statement by picketing Father Tom’s indentured servant wife’s play, that have put the anti-Scientology group in a bad light. I simply do not believe for a second this is coincidence.

Subversive is how every single bad thing the “Church” of Scientology DOES. And they have people more than capable of breaking email accounts and getting words in Oprah’s mouth and making their biggest public threat look like the culprits.

And I would venture to say it’s NO COINCIDENCE that out of allll the messages Oprah Winfrey gets on any given day, the one SHE chooses to read aloud on the air is the one that DIRECTLY points to Anonymous. There becomes less and less doubt in my mind as time goes by that Ms. Winfrey is a supporter, if not member of the cult. She can’t say it, she has too much to lose, but she blatantly panders to the best known members. This particular “message from the internet” was no mistake, no error in research.

    JMHO.

  34. vdantev says:

    Emily,

CB doesn’t lock people in the basement boiler room of a hotel in Clearwater Florida until they starve to death and then use her own private police force to cover it up.

CB doesn’t take dangerous schizophrenics off their medication so they can stab their mothers to death and claim her insurance policies through the courts as back payments due on course studies.

CB doesn’t canvas neighborhoods of her critics labeling them as child rapists and criminals.

CB hasn’t been arrested and put in jail for 20 years for wire-tapping federal buildings to discover if the FBI has any ongoing investigations.

CB isn’t at the center of 20 suicides and at least a dozen unsolved murders.

Scientology however IS, HAS and DOES.

Get out of the cult now, or live in regret and eternal debt.

    Your choice.

  35. Anon says:

    >>Agree, Mairead, definitely think it came from a source other than Anonymous – so much good will towards them and what they’re doing, it would be entirely counter-productive of them to do this.<<

Don’t get too attached to that idea – as I’ve explained, Anonymous is wider than the current anti-scientology project. The older style Anonymous lives to troll, and doesn’t care about goodwill. (and yes, this is a problem for the Anons involved in chanology) In the old-style hangouts there is definitely a lot of amusement going on about the fact that a) Oprah didn’t fact-check but took it seriously, and b) that Oprah read out ‘over 9000 penises’ on the air. Plus they have another prank going at the moment which I’m guessing Celebitchy will pick up in the morning…

  36. Mairead says:

It’s difficult to tell on this one – but we can only presume that you may be closer to those circles Anon. My gut feeling is that its someone trying to muck-rake against the chanology (where did that term grow from by the way?) section as you call them. But I’d say the CoS, for example, has enough trolls of its own to play this prank too. But it is odd that out of all of the messages she received that that’s the one she read and made it sound like she was taking it seriously by the look of the article.

Thanks for the tip-off about a new prank Anon – it;ll be interesting to see it. 😉

  37. KDRockstar says:

Dun dun dun – music went off in my head at Anon’s post. 😆

  38. Celebitchy says:

Anon – you guys got tickets to Kate’s play, didn’t you?

  39. pedolfini says:

You are all wondering how oprah’s researchers haven’t check this story better…. but why should they?

they made out this story from begin trying to restore Oprah’s credibility milking their pot of public pedo fear

  40. ladykansan says:

😈 you all sound like a bunch of haters why wouldn’t she take pedophiles serious it’s a very serious problem even if that group is fake trust there are real ones out there preying on your children and as for trying to restore her credibility with who she never lost her credibility with her core audience only with the white republican women who are pissed because she won’t have palin on her show which they should be happy about i don’t think palin would do to well with oprah interviewing any way it’s her show she can have who she wants and if you all don’t like it you can change the channel i’m pretty sure she will be fine either way

  41. Mairead says:

👿 you all sound like a bunch of haters. why wouldn’t she take pedophiles serious? it’s a very serious problem. even if that group is fake, trust there are real ones out there preying on your children. and as for trying to restore her credibility, with whom? she never lost her credibility with her core audience, only with the white republican women who are pissed because she won’t have palin on her show. which they should be happy about; i don’t think palin would do to well with oprah interviewing any way. it’s her show she can have who she wants and if you all don’t like it you can change the channel. i’m pretty sure she will be fine either way

    I have children? 😯

  42. Anon says:

    >> Anon – you guys got tickets to Kate’s play, didn’t you? <<

I don’t know, but I doubt it. Most Anons don’t have huge budgets to work with and the mindset is very much against disturbing the play. If that happens, it’s far more likely to be done by scientologists posing as Anon (they did that at the past protest as well, thankfully that mostly went unnoticed by the public)

When I was talking about was a game of rumour-ball – in which a rumour is pitched and the game is to get it picked up by mainstream media. I mean, someone on the internet told me, it must be true!

  43. Adere says:

Compared to that Brass Eye programme mentionded earlier this prank is pretty silly, and yet Oprah & Co still fell for it? Seems a bit fishy to me. Using an predator awareness programme to discredit other activist groups? For shame. Or am I too much of a paranoid now?

Thx to geronimo en Mairead for introducing Chris Morris to me, I almost shat myself watching that Paedogeddon programme. From laughter, that is.

  44. Celebitchy says:

Anon – sorry for jumping to conclusions about it. I should have known that you’re more peaceful than that. We’ve inadvertently started a few big rumors here, it’s pretty easy to do. The British papers do it every week. I was checking out the forums on enturbulation and you’re very media savvy.

  45. geronimo says:

@Anon – more food for thought. Thank you.

  46. geronimo says:

@Adere – you’re welcome! Also check out ‘The Day Today’ (spoof political prog.) Dangerously funny.

  47. daisy424 says:

@Ladykansan;”….she never lost her credibility with her core audience only with the white republican women…”

I disagree with that statement. She started to lose her core audience when she backed Obama instead of Hillary Clinton for President.

NBC: Oprah’s audience is predominantly female, white, and over the age of 55.Overall, 2% of all 18- to 49-year-old’s watch Oprah. Oprah’s audience is also predominantly white: 5.9 million of whites watch Oprah, compared with 1.4 million blacks.

I found this interesting; “Harpo Productions has signed a development deal with multitalented actress and comedian Kirstie Alley for future television projects, including a possible daily strip format”.
    From Oprah’s site.

  48. Mairead says:

I found this interesting; “Harpo Productions has signed a development deal with multitalented actress and comedian Kirstie Alley for future television projects, including a possible daily strip format”.
    From Oprah’s site.

😮 Interesting. A cynic could speculate that it couldn’t just be a coincidence that there is a lot of courtship by sworn Scientologists swirling around the two most powerful black people in the industry, Oprah and Will Smith. A really cynical way of spreading further into black middle-class communities perhaps?

But perhaps herself and Kirstie Alley have known each other since the year dot and Oprah finds her amusing and wants to help her out. But cults or “avant-garde religious organisations” do tend to attract the spiritually and religiously curious, which could potentially make Oprah a prime target for recruitment. 😐

  49. SeVen says:

    GO ANON!

  50. Diva says:

So, is it because she’s the mighty Oprah that we’re still just barely speculating, and in hushed tones, that she’s in bed with COS?????

John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Kirstie Alley… just LOOK at how these three have been borderline worshipped on her shows. Seriously.

And then she “OOPSIE” reads a “web comment” on her show basically saying an anti COS group is a bunch of pedophiles?

The same week that same group have the finger pointed at them for illegal hacking activities???

THE SAME WEEK that same group very, very publically pickets Katie Holmes’ play?

    Please.

  51. Celebitchy says:

    Diva,
It looked like Oprah was stupid to me. It honestly didn’t occur to me that she was complicit in it. Maybe there’s someone on her staff who set her up, and it’s totally possible that she did know what she was doing and did a favor for the Cos, but I thought it was more like she was duped. You make a very good point, though.

  52. Diva says:

I just don’t think anything happens by accident with Oprah Winfrey and she has a long history of ass kissing with those three, moreso than your average celebrity.

I wasn’t implying that just this site or this site’s commenters are scared, I meant in general.

Day four of migraine fuels conspiracy theories, maybe. 😛 But to me, it’s obvious. It has been since that “at home with Tom Cruise” two day droning event she did. Not to mention her literal worship of Travolta and her recent apparent rejection of God being the superior being in her life for the most part. Oprah has bought into the hype that she is the true God, and she certainly has the money to make that happen in Scientology.

    Again, just my opinion.

  53. Rez says:

Are you dense, with this “Anonymous was set up!” stupidity? How could you link to Encyclopedia Dramatica without noticing PedoBear?

    http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Pedobear

Hell, go there and look up “Loli” “CP” or “Chris Hansen.” Joking about being pedos has been a staple of Anonymous LONG before they got into Scientology. Christ, have you even heard of 4Chan, birthplace of Anon?

  54. Diva says:

Yes, Rez, I’m dense and stupid for thinking that COS could orchestrate a plan to create backlash against their most public detractors.

    Stupid me. 😛

  55. Celebitchy says:

Great background research on your target there, Rez. Maybe next time you’ll be more convincing.

  56. actingrc says:

4chan is the stinky, 14-year-old-who-hasn’t-discovered-deodorant-yet armpit of the internet in a lot of ways. Rez is right on that count. not to say there aren’t witty and clever people on there, there’s just a lot of noise. (i mean, the one rule on the hen-tai boards is “no sh*tting dick nipples”). it can be very hard to read. really, the merry prankster explanation is plausible – but far less satisfying.

  57. Megan says:

    Rez is right though.

  58. geronimo says:

Diva, I still think Oprah’s just plain stupid here.

Is she scientology-friendly or has her wealth and power removed her so far from reality that she doesn’t even see scientology as an issue? And views her powerful friends’ involvement in scientology no differently than she sees her own long line of faddish, foolish, freakish ‘personal growth’ endeavours? 🙄

Whatever intelligence and good sense she may have had at one point seems to have just evaporated into the deified atmosphere in which she lives. I think she’s just a powerful, rich, clueless fool.

Edit. Watch her delivery in that VT. She’s full of self-righteous self-importance. Totally self-absorbed Oprah, scoring points for herself, not, IMO, spreading the CoS gospel.

  59. Anon says:

4chan is a thousand monkeys flinging shit at a wall. Occasionally it makes beautiful patterns on that wall.

(seriously, best analogy I can think of)

There’s a lot of joking about child porn on there, true enough. I haven’t yet seen the subject that 4channers won’t be callous and jokey about. But if you seriously think that it is a child porn network, you need your head examined.

  60. RReedy says:

    Poor ole OKRAH!!!!

  61. candy blackmail says:

Scientology destroys everything it touches and Oprah’s career is not immune to it.

  62. Rebecca says:

LOL on Oprah. I suspect the reason that Scientology calls Anonymous “pedophiles” is because Anonymous opposes Scientology in part because of their doctrines against homosexuality. In many homophobes’ minds, homosexual=pedophile, unfortunately.

  63. daisy424 says:

Amen Geronimo, spot on. Arrogant & self-absorbed.

  64. I was “in” Scientology for 30 years, and helped their “Top Secret Office of Special Affairs, (OSA) International Internet Gang” open up the phony accounts, they would use. When I found out they were spamming the Net, (basically stopping free speech) soon after I left Scientology, forever.

I wouldn’t put it past OSA, at all, to “Plant” such a disgusting post to Oprah,
(Or push someone else to do it)– knowing her allegiance to TC. Calling her “Stupid” is ridiculous. She’s speaking out against Child Porn, which for MOST of us, is a very real, disgusting issue.
If anything is stupid that O does, it is refusing to interview we, any of the MANY X-Scientologists who spent years “in”, to learn the abuses the Cult of Scientology (She seems to support) have done to MANY others, and continue to do, daily. She’s all about education: Then please learn BOTH sides.
    Best to all,
    Tory/Magoo 8)

  65. geronimo says:

Missing the point somewhat. The ‘stupidity’ accusation here is directed at HER – for very much the reason you give: her total silence on scientology despite the number of loved-up interviews with high-profile members she’s done on her show – and not at the serious issue she was attempting to highlight – ie. paedophilia.

The great Oprah seems to be quite selective when it comes to educating the masses. 🙄

  66. Aspen says:

I have always assumed that Oprah’s “worship” of the openly-CoS celebrities was NOT because Oprah is interested in Scientology but because THEY all try to court HER.

Oprah would be CoS’s greatest conquest ever, right? It’s not even all that complicated. CoS wants Oprah. Oprah is (though I like her very much despite her deficiencies) narcissistic and self-aggrandizing to a degree heretofore unseen in humanity outside of the monarchies.

Why wouldn’t she, like so many other powerful people before her, surround herself with sycophants and other “important” people who have gone out of their way to genuflect at her altar? So, they flatter her and include her and praise her and befriend her and puff her up and — boom — all of a sudden her circle of friends and the recipients of her biggest favors…are all Scientologists.

So…I agree with those who say that Oprah was just clueless on this. It was not, however, an accident. They set Oprah up to do their bidding…again. And she fell for it…again.

I wonder if John Travolta can woo her back into good humor with another fancy tea set this time?

  67. vdantev says:

I know they’ve been trying to court her for years and would be a huge feather in CO$ cap. But this also looks like a ham-fisted attempt to call out Anonymous.

  68. brista says:

I just can’t believe she said “9,000 penises” on freakin national television. I know we’re all Puritanical and sexually repressed in the old USA so maybe I’m overreacting but that sounds like a lot of penises to discuss during daytime TV.

To be honest, I doubt most of the moms watching knows that’s Anonymous’ slogan/motto. I know about Anonymous and I’ve read a lot of their site, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that slogan. But then, maybe I was too busy being weirded out by creepy CO$. Sounds like something from a thriller…

Aspen’s argument re: Oprah and the Den of Thieves sounds spot on to me. Whenever Travolta, Cruise, and Alley are on the show, she acts like they’re her total BFF, far more than the other celebs that show up.

Oprah would be the biggest get CO$ could ever get. She’s the Big Kahuna. You get her to endorse your product and you’re pretty much set for life. (Or at least, set until Queen O sets her fiery wrath on you.) She can be parted from her money if the right snake oil comes around (evidenced by the many, many expensive diets and weight loss programs she’s done) and she could easily get her audience to warm up to CO$. Give CO$ an inch, get people to dip their toes in the less offensive stuff, then all CO$ has to do is sink its claws in and hold on until every penny is gone…

  69. Anon says:

“The 9,000 reference is an Internet meme that’s used by the group to reference their number of members”

I find the research done for this article suspect. The above quote is incorrect as are several other references.

The CO$ protest group and Anonymous are separate entities. Calling Anonymous an entity is charitable, freaks out for kicks and lulz is a more correct description.

The posting was probably made by some /b/tard troll and a damn good one. It made me laugh. The joke is on the mainstream media and the people making comments on this board.

About the idea that this is some CO$…

/b/tards post worse than this on a regular basis, so if CO$ wants to make them look bad they’re going to need to step up their game just a bit. Anyone who visits /b/ can figure out pretty quickly that the place is full of freaks, pervs and pedos. It’s not a revelation.

TLDR; this article is full of fail. Enjoy.

  70. Jeanne says:

I guess this just proves the point that maybe America needs some younger, (20ish-30ish) talk show hosts. We have Ellen, Maury, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Tyra, The View, etc. etc. How can you be a media personality in 2008 and not be internet savvy? I thought that was why all these shows have interns and staffers so they can bridge the gap between the aging hosts and popular culture. Dr. Phil shows his ignorance sometimes too re: internet.

  72. Tony says:

“It’s not funny to joke about being a pedophile and raping children, and who would do that except someone trying to smear the group?”

That shows how well you understand Anonymous, which is to say, not at all. Have you actually looked at 4chan’s /b/ board, where they come from? They love joking about pedophilia; it’s their bread and butter. “Pedobear” is practically their mascot. They love that someone trolled Oprah with the “9000 penises” line.

Oh, and joking about raping children can actually be incredibly funny. Some people respond to tragedy – and acquire power over it – by laughing at it. Saying that something is simply “not funny” gives it power over you. It’s a strange response if you’re not used to it, but it actually makes a lot of sense.

If you want to understand the kind of culture you’re dealing with here, read more Encyclopedia Dramatica, and remember that a lot of it is satirical.

I love how this article is defending Anonymous! Not only did they troll Oprah, but their troll has succeeded in this article as well!

    WHOOOOOOOOOO!!

And I love how the description of “Over 9000” makes no reference to the Dragon Ball Z video whatsoever, and that Pedobear isn’t mentioned either.

It seems that you have very little knowledge of Anonymous and their work. The project chanology is mostly run by newfags and people who have nothing to do with the real Anonymous. It is very much likely that the trolling of Oprah in fact was made by Anonymous, you don’t seem to understand what kind of people Anonymous are made up of.
You were totally wrong on the over 9,000, it comes from Dragon Ball Z, a manga serie. And in fact, you didn’t even mention pedobear at all. Maybe you should take the time and do some real research on a subject before you go ahead and write about it.
(Ps. You can joke about anything, even pedophelia.)

Hahaha you got the wrong Anonymous! This wasn’t from the scientology hating group… It was from anonymous at /b/ on 4chan where that meme is widely used. /b/ is just an imageboard site full of random images and memes. Think about it, do you really think an antiscientology group would be leaving a Dragonball Z meme on Oprah? What would the point be in that? This whole article is bull.
