‘The King’s Speech’ takes the Best Picture Oscar

tks11

HUZZAH! The Duchess of Crumpets has been good to us this year! Did I call this? I think I called this, way back when. I’m so, so happy that The Social Network got shut out – I liked The Social Network and it’s a solid movie, but The King’s Speech is, in my opinion, an instant classic, and one of the best films of the past few years. The acceptance speeches wasn’t all that, it’s just blah blah Harvey Weinstein, etc. Alright, bitches. Good night, y’all.

This pleases me. Finally, a good pick for the best pic.

    Kaiser…you’re so Celebitchy! 🙂

And I wholeheartedly agree with you re: TKS vs. TSN.

  3. dit says:

I had an inkling it would be the Kings Speech since they used the speech as the narration for all other best pictures. Totally well deserved. This is one of the best films I’ve seen in recent years.

  4. Oi says:

Yes yes yes! Good night all! Thanks for staying up with coverage Kaiser/CB!

  5. Carol says:

This makes me very, very happy. Much deserved Oscar. ITA, Kaiser, I enjoyed TSN and thought it was a solid movie, but TKS was by far the finest film of the year.

  6. Bee says:

So happy this movie won! It’s so good. Unfortunately they are about to release a PG-13 version of it. And they will be removing all of the R versions from theaters. This is such a shame because it means they are going to cut that pivotal, and hilarious, scene where the King curses. It’s vital to the movie and isn’t just cursing for the sake of cursing. Such a shame.

I am so happy! Now I can go to sleep with a smile on my face!

  8. Andrea says:

The speech from the movie gave me the chills when I heard it over the montage.

Great movie, I’m glad it won.

  9. Tiffany says:

Glad for the film. This one was one of my favorites. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed, cried and felt good leaving the theatre. Been a Firth fan since the Bridget Jones. Always liked Rush and Carter so all in all the academy got it right.

  10. moviegoer says:

The Academy has proved once again they’re conservative and Anglophiles. The King’s Speech is an inspiring, moving film, I admit. But I also consider it an Oscar bait. Forrest Gump-style narrative and a typical corny punchline like I have a voice AND it’s set in WW2. It has the Oscar bait package and it came as no surprise the Academy named it Best Picture. I’m pretty sure it will go down as one of the worst picks by the Academy. But there’s no accounting for taste, and it’s the Academy’s taste different from mine, I guess. 😉

LOL I am just glad The Social Network didn’t win. Whoooo!!! Congrats to The King’s Speech.

  12. Janet says:

I’m glad “The King’s Speech” won, but I personally think it’s stupid that TEN freaking awards got nominated for Best Picture AGAIN. It’s was either “The King’s Speech” or “The Social Network.” There was no contest for a third film and expanding the list to ten nominations is pretty pointless.

    Still, “The King’s Speech” FTW.

I’ve no desire to see TSN, but I will absolutely see TKS. Good night, all!

  14. Flan says:

Much prefer the King’s Speech to the Social Network, where everything was portrayed as sexist as possible (far more than in what really happened).

  15. Girafe99 says:

Said this in the Firth thread, so I’ll repeat here as it’s more appropriate, King’s Speech is not half as good as people make it out to be, I thought the Social Network was a far greater film and Toy Story better than the both!

@moviegoer, you said it better than I could!

  16. brin says:

Yay and Huzzah indeed! Thanks for the great coverage Kaiser & CB!

  17. Chris says:

According to the readers of Australia’s FilmInk magazine Inception was the year’s best film and FilmInk is as diverse movie magazine as you’re going to get. I also don’t know why non-English speaking movies get put in their own category. You can’t tell me that the best “foreign” film isn’t better than some of the ten films that were nominated for Best Film.

Thanks for the coverage CB and Kaiser. I’m looking forward to the post Oscars articles.

  18. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    WHOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!

  19. tapioca says:

How to Train Your Dragon was robbed!! Seriously, it was – along with TS3 – the best reviewed wide-release of the year. That said, I’d rather see TKS win over TSN, if only because David Fincher made TCCOBB and that’s 2½ hours of my life that I want back…

  20. Majosha says:

“It’s was either ‘The King’s Speech’ or ‘The Social Network.’ There was no contest for a third film and expanding the list to ten nominations is pretty pointless.”

Sorry, but “The Fighter” and “Winter’s Bone” were both outstanding movies that blew TSN out of the water. So did “Inception.” I agree that ten nominees is a bit much, but TSN, while definitely a good film, was hardly a masterpiece.

  21. Abby says:

Yay! I loved this movie. I liked a lot of the best picture nominees though. I sat there hoping Toy Story would win–just because.

  22. Aqua says:

I loved this movie so glad it won over TSN which was boring.I found TKS very relatable on a emotional level.

  23. Janet says:

@Majosha: Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was mainly talking about which movie was going to WIN, rather than which movie was the most outstanding. I have yet to watch ‘Winter’s Bone,’ but I did see ‘The Fighter’ and ‘Inception’ and I have to agree that they were both great films. But the hype this year was ‘The Social Network’ vs. ‘The King’s Speech,’ that’s it. No matter how good the other films were, it was down to those two. That’s why it’s silly to expand the list with ten nominations.

  24. Emily says:

I was so happy when I found out about this! This was my favourite movie of the year. And I hated the Social Network, I would have been pissed if that won.

Although a tie between TKS and Toy Story 3 would’ve been awesome.

  25. Boxy Lady says:

@moviegoer I don’t understand your comment about TKS having a “Forrest Gump-style narrative,” considering that it wasn’t a fictional story.
