Pregnant singer Jewel, 36, was involved in a scary car crash over the weekend in Stephenville, Texas with a firetruck. (You can see the photo below, credit to the Stephenville Empire Tribune.) The truck hit Jewel’s car in the passenger side and caused a ton of damage to the point where it looks like if someone was sitting there they could have been seriously injured. Jewel was taken to the hospital for observation, and the Empire Tribune reports that it was just a precaution and was “only due to the fact that she is pregnant.” She’s fine and the baby is fine thank goodness. Jewel tweeted that her car, a Cadillac SRX (which is characterized as a mid size crossover SUV – it looks like a half sedan, half SUV), absorbed the shock of the accident and “kept me safe.”
It was a scary accident, but things could have been much worse.
Singer/songwriter Jewel, who announced in January that she was pregnant with her first child, had her car smashed by a volunteer fire engine in Texas on Friday. Luckily, she was okay, and she took to Twitter to reveal why.
“1 thing I do know is my car saved my & baby’s life-definitely going 2 get another Cadillac SRX! It absorbed all the damage & kept me safe!” the star tweeted.
Cadillac certainly appreciated that tweet.
She also gave an update as to her health:
“Hey everyone-just got released from the ER & my Dr’s office- everything is fine-me & the baby r ok- thanx 4 all your thoughts & prayers,” she wrote. “Dr said no working out- so I’m going to take it easy this weekend. Just a little sore and banged up- but feeling so blessed this morning.”

Those SUVs may by safe for the drivers, but they’re not considered as safe for other cars on the road since they’re so high and can hit smaller cars right where people are sitting. (Minivans are generally safer than SUVs, although what makes the difference of course is the driver.) Jewel’s car is lower to the ground though, and it looks like she could have been seriously hurt by the height difference between the truck and her own car. At least this story has a happy ending and everything is ok for Jewel and her baby. It’s unclear who caused the accident or if anyone is at fault. You never know what could happen when you’re driving and stories like this remind us that it’s important to stay alert and cautious.

So relieved she and the baby are ok…very close call!
that is so wonderful that she and her baby didn’t get hurt at all. Judging from the way the car looks, and the size of the vehicle they collided with they very lucky. I always liked jewel since i first heard of her in the mid 90’s.
Jewel and Ty are terrific people. Genuine and nice. A bull rider and country singer are a match made in heaven. May good fortune continue to be their baby-daddy.
Wow I am glad she’s OK.
That’s wonderful that she’s safe! So scary when it’s not just you that’s at risk!
With regard to the SUV issue, there is such a variance in bumper height for SUVs these days. Denalis, Escalades, etc, are considerably higher and larger than crossover and small SUVs. My husband and I drove the SRX, along with an X5 and several other smaller SUVs before buying our new SUV (mom car, I miss my C230), and I really liked it-nothing as efficient on gas as the Terrain, which was our tipping point, but still-a really fun vehicle.
Good for them!!!
Bless them, I am so glad they are safe! I cannot think of much that is scarier for a pregnant woman. It’s wonderful news.
I also think it’s sweet how he has his hand on her stomach in photos. My husband does that, too. So endearing.
Yikes!! I drive a Mazda CX-7 which is a similar “crossover” vehicle. I feel MUCH safer than I did in my old 2 door Honda Civic & even safer than I do in my husband’s smallish pick-up. We bought it when I found out that I was pregnant & I knew that it would be a good choice
I was a HUGE Jewel fan in college, and still love her, so I was relieved to hear that she and baby are ok (I would be relieved whether I were a fan or not come to think of it). I saw her in concert a few times and she was amazing. 🙂 I remember years ago her saying she drove a Volvo because it was a good solid vehicle but unpretentious. When Mr Vixen and I had #2 we decided to trade in the little car for a Subaru Tribeca, which we love. It’s a smaller SUV, so it’s drives like a sedan but is a little roomier.
We drive a Honda s2000 and if I had a nickel for every time we had to swerve out of the way from some SUV trying to merge into us on the highway, I could afford a freaking porche cayman. Our car is a eye catching bright blue, and yet no one sees us, especially womnen in too-high SUVs who dont pay attention to what the hell they’re doing.
I am glad Jewel and her unborn baby are ok too, but wasn’t it just luck, rather than her car, that saved her? Look at that picture- if the truck had hit them on the driver’s side instead of the passenger’s side, do you think they still would have been ok?
I got rear-ended by a high-riding rescue truck and was driven under a SUV. My car was totalled and their trucks had zero damage. Bumpers don’t do any good when they are ridden over.
i did the same thing! i rolled my scion tc twice about a year ago and bought another one because i walked away with one bruise; my car was in pieces, however.
Holy Cow! The photo of her vehicle nearly crushed looks horrific. I’m surprised she walked away with no injuries.
She is such a great gal and she looks so beautiful pregnant.
Good luck to the both of them for a healthy baby.
Glad Jewel and her baby are ok. But, no mention if the driver of the truck was ok? That’s an older (73-87) chevy pickup, not a huge fire truck. NO air bags, crinkle zones and steel dashboards. But, I guess since he or she wasn’t famous or pregnant, their condition is insignifant.
The damage to the other vehicle does not appear to extend to the cab, it’s mostly contained to the engine compartment. Why the hissy fit?
The other vehicle is a dually, and clearly shows a VFD (Volunteer Fire Dept) insignia on the side. The reporting is accurate. The truck is quite a bit larger and, as previously mentioned, has relatively limited damage.
So glad Jewel and baby are ok, and I hope the other driver/passengers are as well.
I too wondered about the condition of the other driver? I guess if they were seriously injured it would’ve been mentioned.
I think that it’s luck that Jewel and baby was okay. If the truck had hit the driver’s side I wonder if there would’ve been such a happy ending to the story. I’m just glad it didn’t!
It doesn’t say who was at fault, but this pregnancy I work harder to stay concentrated on the road and other drivers. I had a few near misses when I was pregnant with my first.
I would love a safer vehicle. We just can’t afford it. I drive a Pontiac Sunfire.
That yellow dress? PERFECT maternity dress. Wish I could say the same for the black one.
