Being famous sucks. At least if you’re to believe most of the people that are famous. And it’s not hard to see why. What could possibly be advantageous about being rich, thin, and beautiful? And let’s not even mention all the free swag and getting the best tables at booked restaurants. It’s a hard, empty, solitary life – at least if we’re to believe Kirsten Dunst.
Dunst recently gave an interview to OK! magazine in which she dispensed some of her legendary sage advice, and then talked about some of the hardships of being famous.
Kirsten also admits that she can identify with Marie Antoinette’s troubles with celebrity after playing her onscreen.
“Being famous can be isolating,” she says. “I was 11 when I started acting, and I’ve always been surrounded by adults and people I’m trying to please. It can make you feel very lonely. You’re constantly wondering if people are using you.”
The Spiderman 3 star says she’s gotten some good advice, however, from others in the industry on how to deal with the ups and downs of fame and success.
“The one thing every actor has told me is, ‘Always keep your head on straight and never stop being the person you really are.’ As soon as you start getting wrapped up in the celebrity side of the business, which has nothing to do with acting, that’s when you can lose it,” she recalls. “I remember James Wood telling me, ‘Do small movies.’ But I took that with a grain of salt because he said it while he was in that Oliver Stone football epic Any Given Sunday.”
[From OK! Magazine]
As much as most of us hate hearing celebs complain about the downside of fame, I can definitely see Kirsten’s point – especially since she’s been acting since she was a child. I doubt she knows what a completely normal relationship is like; and it’s got to be impossible not to wonder why it is someone really wants to hang out with you. It must make you feel like you can never really be yourself – because who knows when the person you’re with is going to go blab to Star or something?
The cliched acting advice from James Woods was a little grating. Not just because Dunst calls him out for doing an Oliver Stone film while relating the story, but because she certainly has done several big films too (hello Spiderman?). But he did make a good point that celebrity has nothing to do with acting in and of itself. The best actors I’ve ever seen where in relatively small plays, and I’m sure no one will ever hear of them. Not that Spiderman wasn’t epic or anything.
Here’s Kirstin in Paris during fashion week yesterday . According to Fame, “the actress spends the day shopping at “Isabel Marant” boutique. Taking a short break, Kristin enjoys a hot chocolate at cafe “la palette’ in the Saint Germain district of the city before venturing to dinner at a restaurant on “Rue De Vertus.” Images thanks to Fame.
All actors/actresses KNOW what they’re getting into when they seek fame and fortune. I have no sympathy for those who whine about their lack of privacy. If you don’t like it, sell your mansions, take your millions and get out of the industry.
BTW – Kristen was brilliant in Interview with the Vampire and Little Women, but as she grew older I kinda lost interest in her acting skills. My opinion.:?
Agree Kerri, for being so young, she rocked.
I have to admit I liked her in Marie Antoinette and Devil’s Arithmetic 🙂
Daisy – I think she should stay away from commercial movies, e.g., Bring It On, Spiderman, Crazy/Beautiful, and look for scripts that can show off her acting chops.
I agree she was pretty good in Marie Antoinette, even though it flopped at the Box Office, but if she’s to be taken seriously as an actress, she has to stay away from big budget, teen-friendly movies for awhile. Again, just my opinion.
Guilty admission: I love Bring It On and think she’s great fun in it, except that she can’t really cheer/dance, but the editing is terrific so you can barely tell.
SPIRIT FINGERS!!!
Kerri; If you haven’t seen Devil’s Arithmetic, rent it.
It has a great story line and her acting is fabulous. A perfect film to show bratty teens who need a reality check.
Paris Hilton should have watched it…..
edit* Sadly no. I downloaded a few new icons yesterday. I’ll be changing them around…..
Thanks Daisy – will put it on my “movies to rent” list.
BTW – Is your gravatar a picture of yourself?
I’d keep her company 😳
I liked her part in “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People”!
I like you, dante. You like Dita, Angie and Kirsten and you have swords as your weapon of choice. 8)
You know, no one forced her to continue acting through high school or once she became an adult. She could have quit the business for awhile and joined the real world, but she decided to make acting her career. She made these decisions. It sucks, but there are down sides to everything, you just have to deal. Reap what you sow.
I’m so sick and tired of her complaining about how she is just a normal girl and everyone should leave her alone. If that is what she wants, then she should quit the career that puts her and her stupid personal life in the spotlight!
She was good in ‘The Virgin Suicides’. Awesome soundtrack too, btw..
I am stumped why she gets so much flack from people on mist sites I come across. Like, unmitigated rage. And I see lots of people calling her ugly.. can someone explain that to me? It’s…weird.
Anyway the movie I did not like that she was in was Elizabethtown. I think the whole movie was just a stinker and no one could save it.
i’d never want to be famous. can you imagine, you can’t even have a cup of coffee without being followed around? no amount of wealth or adoration can make up for this complete lack of privacy.
i wonder if she were to just quit the industry at this point if she could still live a normal life.
She’s adorable, and I’ve liked her in everything she’s been in.
WTF, I’m with you abut the Bring it On movie… she was fun and cute in it.
Anony – I’ve often wondered the same thing. She seems like a sweet girl who just craves a bit of normalcy. What’s wrong with that?
Ran- I know. She has hardly had horrendous scandals either, so it kind of seems bandwagon hatred for her. And if she was ‘that’ ugly as people claim she wouldn’t be in movies as a lead actress, ya know?
I haven’t seen Devil’ Arithmetic so I might netflix it.
i think some people are being a little simplistic when they say “she knew what she was getting into” (no, she didn’t, and frankly neither would anyone even if they weren’t 11) or “she could just quit” (the only job for which she has training. not to mention that, for many serious thespians, acting is like breathing, and that’s why they make it in such a tough profession). think about never meeting a single person who doesn’t (potentially) want to work with you or piggyback on your success. and this isn’t even the usual “i have no privacy” gripe. this is “i have no people i can trust or love.” would you make the bargain to get to do what you love most in life if it meant you could never be sure of any friendship again?
yeah, why is everyone so down on this girl? I love her snaggle tooth and I actually quite like her style. Anything but another carbon copy, fake everything, boring, snatch-flashing celeb.
Loved Bring it ON.
Maybe she finds life lonely not because of the fame, but because she refuses to shower and prefers to look like a homeless woman.
She’s not that famous. If she doesn’t like the life…get out. She should have enough $$ squirreled away. She’s young, go do something else.
Bring It On is one of my fave teen movies of all time, it’s right up there with Ten Things I Hate About you and The Breakfast Club.
I like Kirsten, thinks she’s a decent actress (the only movie I didn’t like with her in it is Elizabetown. It is a stinkfest just like anony says) and though she’s not always photogenic she’s far from ugly. Oh and I compeltely agree with actingrc’s assessment.
