Clay Aiken says he’s the same person he’s always been since coming out

Clay Aiken has never seemed to understand what the fuss is in terms of his sexual orientation. While this can be attributed to an unwillingness to come out of the closet, Clay’s also said he doesn’t see himself as a very sexual person – and I think that plays a part in it too. I think he genuinely doesn’t understand why people would care one way or the other, since he doesn’t really see himself in a possibly sexual way. But he did finally come out of the closet, noting that he needed to be open and honest because that’s the way he wants to raise his son.

Since then Clay has said he has no regrets about how he handled things, and he’s had to remind people that he’s still the exact same person he was before he came out.

“I would have preferred to separate my personal life from my professional life,” Aiken, 29, writes on his clayonline.com. “But, living as myself without discussing my sexuality publicly would have been as impossible.” Writing on various message boards, many Aiken fans expressed feelings of betrayal by the American Idol alum.

Aiken has no regrets about the way he handled his personal life over the past five years, saying he has “the same liberties and rights that every single gay man and woman in the world should have … the right to determine for myself when I was ready to discuss my personal life.”

Discussing himself in a 2003 Rolling Stone interview, Aiken opined that male celebrities are either considered womanizers or gay. “Since I’m neither one of those, people are completely concerned about me,” he said.

He says he will not apologize for the response, saying, “When this guy started asking me about things that I didn’t really know how to answer for myself, things that I was not yet ready to admit to folks like my mother and my family, things that I found intimidating and invasive, I responded in what I assumed was a benign way at the time.” In conclusion Aiken blogs, “I am not defined by my sexuality. It is, simply, a small facet of the same person I have always been. Nothing has changed.”

[From People]

I think it’s important to remember that while it’s normal to wonder about a lot of things that are ambiguous, Clay – and any gay person – has the right to come out when and how they want to. It’s not information they owe anyone. As People noted, he did explicitly state that he’s not gay, but I understand how that could happen if you haven’t prepared yourself on how to deal with that line of questioning. Though Clay’s the same person, I hope he has a sense of peace and happiness for being able to live his life out in the open.

    Cynthia Nixon’s ugly cousin?

  5. Livia says:

If he’s outside the theatre where Spamalot is playing, then maybe it’s his stage makeup…although, most actors do take the time to take it off before leaving, lol.

  6. Zoe says:

I think that make-up is from his show Spamalot. I wish him luck.

  7. Ron says:

For the love of God, every Southern Lady knows that Albolene will take off even the heaviest make-up. For shame Miss Aiken! SHAME!

C’mon guys. Did you take the time to read the article… you know, the part where it says: “Here’s Clay mingling with fans and signing autographs behind the stage of his hit show “Spamalot,” on September 30th.” So yeah… stage makeup. And why would he want to keep fans waiting forever while he took the makeup off?

  9. WTF?!?! says:

caffie, aside from the occasional musical theatre chorus girl, it is not customary for either men or women to greet the fans wearing their stage makeup. It doesn’t take that long to take off, and actors need the time to decompress after the show, change clothes, give costumes to the wardrobe people, take off their makeup, and even receive friends that have come to see the show in their dressing rooms.
Throngs of fans are there every night, night after night for years sometimes, the actors don’t go rushing out to greet every busload of Baltimore blue hairs and pre-menarchal teenyboppers.

He likes wearing makeup. Good for him.

caffie: I confess I did not read that part… thanks for clearing that up 😀
I guess stage make up is meant to enhance the features under harsh lights…
(although as a kid I was always freaked out by the dudes playing Widow Twanky with their heavily penciled in crow’s feet and strange eye makeup)..

I was gonna say “wtf is wrong with his face” but I guess it’s backstage so it’s horribly done stage makeup.

OMG enough already. Can I please quit reading about Clay Aiken. I knew he was gay the first time I saw him on American Idol. Why do we keep beating this subject into the ground?????

  13. Danny says:

Clay doesn’t keep his fans waiting at the stage door. He usually comes out to stage door within minutes of the curtain coming down. He goes back inside after signing autographs and taking pictures with fans and then gets ready to go home. He’s very considerate that way.

  14. vdantev says:

That is a HORRIBLE pair of pictures of him.

I would imagine Clay is ready to not speak any more of it either, but he had promised his official message board a blog and that is what this is…not an article or interview. He allowed them to rant and rave and say all kinds of things, in their “effort” to adjust, things that I would have said “y’all need to get a fucking grip” to, but he allowed a week or more of it and then posted his blog as promised. If you read the entire blog it’s very well done, unapologetic, compassionate for those having issues (which is weird since it’s his life (simplified, I know), but very definitive in his position. I give the man props for being that strong…tough thing in any gay person’s life, coming out to family, much less millions of “interested” parties. Anyway, I think he’s pretty much done with that…he does wish to have his own life. As to the makeup…eh. Some remove it some don’t…

I give the dude props for not giving a damn and just doing his thing.

    Peace!
