*The entire post is a SPOILER for last night’s Top Chef finale.
At first, I didn’t really care about Top Chef, but then I began to catch marathons of previous seasons, and I got kind of addicted. This current season of Top Chef was the first time I was actually watching episodes as they aired, rather than through reruns. I don’t mind admitting that I watched just because I like Carla and Tiffany so much – while I don’t think Tiff and Carla are the best “chefs” I would definitely want to eat their down-home Southern cooking any day of the week.
Anyway, Antonia, Tiffany, Richard Blais and Michael were the final four. The four contestants got to go to the Bahamas, where they faced some seriously hard challenges (diving for your own conk?!?). Tiffany was cut first, and then Antonia was cut last week. Even though I started watching for Tiff and Carla, Antonia became one of my favorites, and I really, really loved her fighting spirit, her humor, and her passion. She’s a cool girl! And I liked that although Blais and Michael both thought they were better than her, they still gave Antonia respect, and they seemed genuinely emotional when she was cut.
So the head-to-head competition was set up for the finale: The loud, somewhat obnoxious, brassy Italian (Mike) versus the tightly-wound, neurotic ginger Richard Blais. I think Blais probably was considered the “favorite” coming in, but Mike had all of the momentum. The challenge was Restaurant Wars – Richard and Mike had to set up their concept restaurant, and create a four-course tasting menu. One of my favorite parts of the finale was how Richard and Mike had to choose their sous chefs – all of the season’s competitors came back and had a half an hour to create an amuse bouche for Richard and Mike to blindly taste-test and choose. Mike ended up with three girls as sous chefs, and I believe he ACTUALLY made a Charlie’s Angels reference!
Re: the food. I actually thought both men created interesting dishes, and I enjoyed seeing both of them deal with the reality of being in charge. Richard’s neurotic tendencies allowed him to do seemingly everything at once, while Mike seemed to be barking orders at everybody and everything. Honestly, though, both seemed like good bosses, and there were no major meltdowns or anything. I also love that Blais changed his icky-looking foie gras ice cream (blech) half-way through when he realized the first batch wasn’t really working. It showed that he could change mid-stream, and I think it helped him in the end. Here are the final dishes (via The Chicago Tribune)
Richard Blais:
Amuse: Raw oyster with creme fraiche pearls and salsa verde
First course: Raw hamachi with fried veal sweetbreads, garlic mayonnaise and pickled celery
Second course: Pork belly, black cod cutlet, bone marrow, beets, brussels sprouts and kumquat
Third course: Beef short rib with mushrooms, red cabbage marmalade and celery root horseradish puree
Dessert: Cornbread with foie gras ice cream and whipped mango
Mike Isabella:
First course: Spiced beet salad with mozzarella, truffle & chocolate vinaigrette
Second course: Halibut with kumquat marmalade cauliflower puree and pancetta crumbs
Third course: Braised pork shoulder with pepperoni sauce, roasted cabbage and turnips
Dessert: Rosemary caramel custard and pine nuts with citrus, celery and apple
Anyway, both men seemed to do really, really well, and from the comments from the judges, I really thought they were going to give it to Mike. I was just as shocked as Richard when Padma called his name. Mike looked disappointed, but I also got the sense of… how do I put it? Mike could not win and he would be fine. If Richard didn’t win, I think he would have been a mess. Anyway, Richard’s emotion got me. When a ginger weeps, I weep. I kind of love him.
I also ended up watching the first half of the live special after Top Chef, and Richard and Mike were the guests. I was glad to see that both of them were in such good spirits, and that the two men genuinely seemed happy for each other and quite friendly. It honestly seemed like they were two dudes who had a lot of respect for each other, and honestly got along really well. Mike even has his own restaurant now!
Top Chef addicted. Best reality show ever, hands down. Team Blaise. So professional. Love.
In the after show with Andy Cohen, Mike was w-a-s-t-e-d. He was a happy camper. Richard was gracious and lovely. Both guys were great. Antonia rocks.
I didn’t get a chance to watch, who was the fan favorite????
I watched it and Richard was so emotional. I too thought they were going to pick Mike.
One of my favorite shows. I don’t miss an episode. I’m glad Richard won. But Carla was my favorite. Antonia too.
But yeah who was the fan favorite?
Carla was the fan favorite. I’m a Top Chef addict myself and I have to say while I grew to love Mike I wanted Richard to win, he had such heart, and I just wanted him to win when he choked on his season and lost for that reason. Over all very happy … I was annoyed with the after party cause you could hear like noise in the background and interesting things happening and they wouldn’t show any of it! -lol- I wanted them to pan backstage so I could see all the chefs getting wasted …
@ NayNay: It was between Fabio and Carla. Carla won. 🙂
Love, love, love Richard. Was almost afraid to watch. So happy for him! Best show on tv for my money. I wish it was a two hour show every week. Unfortunately it’s time for withdrawal. 🙁
@Rachael, I couldn’t have said it better!
Yay, people like Antonia! I thought she was so cool. But she over-spices, doesn’t she?
I was SOOOOO happy Richard won! I love his nuerotic personality, and I’ve disliked Mike since his own season- yeah, I’ve got a serious problem with a chef that’s making fun of his own farting and burping WHILE he’s sweating bullets into the food! I was so disappointed last week when Antonia was sent home- she was my favorite along with Angelo. (no, I didn’t find him hot, but I sure wanted to eat his food!)
This is such a great show; Can’t wait to start Top Chef Masters, and I even (slowly) grew to love Top Chef Desserts. Even though Gail Simmon’s is SO boring! I wish they’de get away from all their product placement crap and focus more on the food and chefs- they got really cheezy with some of their challenges this season.
THANK GOD RICHARD WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Antonia was my favorite! I never really noticed her in her original season because she was overshadowed by Blais and (winner) Stephanie (who I LOVED), but she was great this season. I seriously love Top Chef, but I think there is even more producer involvement about who stays/goes than in other reality shows. Anyone else remember that Leah and Hosea were on FOREVER because they were having a PG-rated “affair?”
Blah, Hosea is the worst winner ever.
I love Antonia! But am so happy that Richard won because i feel like he really needed it. All season i could not put my finger on what was wrong with him, he seemed so hollow not at all like the confident man from his season. But when he brought up losing his mom and another child on the way I understood. Not going to lie, I cried a bit because he was so happy!
Yay Blais! I was rooting for him from episode 1. I would’ve like to have seen Antonia and Blais in the finale, but it was a good one.
Looking forward to TC Masters.
I’ll watch Just Desserts again, too, but I really hope they don’t get a bunch of drama queen crazies on this time. Focus on the food. I like Gail Simmons – she’s fine as host.
I am SOOO glad Richard won. The way they were talking at judges’ table, I was petrified Mike was going to win it. I enjoyed the entire season (and all of the others too). This season of bringing back former chefs who didn’t win was briliant. Very fun to watch!
Total Top Chef Addict here!!!
I was soooo happy Richard won and I cried right along with him!!
Love Carla and glad she won fan favorite but I would love to have seen Fabio get it. He is so Freakin Hot!! He could cook for me anyday!!!! So Sexy!!!
Also I’m a huge Antonia fan and was happy she went so far into the competition. I would have like to seen Fabio, Dale and Angelo make it further in the season but all in all it was a good run and I’m sad it’s over. On to Top Chef Masters with that sexy Curtis Stone!!
I love this write-up. 🙂
Blais and my husband are buddies and hang out and watch football together. He is really a good person and a great father and OH MY GOD CAN HE COOK.
I kind of hated watching this season because I was so nervous for him the whole time!
Top Chef is my absolute favorite show. Never miss it. I honestly think this was the best season. I cried when Richard won, so very very happy for him.
@Mary Ann: So nice to hear that Richard is all the things he seems! OMG, that must be so hard for him to have known how things shook out during the competition this whole time but not be able to share it with his friends. Didn’t you want to torture it out of him?!
I am so glad that Blais won, I have loved him since he was on his season. I totally agree with Marjalane about him sweating in his food, I am sorry but after seeing that I would have a hard time eatting anything he cooked. I would love to eat Carla’s food, she puts so much love in to everything she makes.
If anyone cares, Marcel has a cooking show on Syfy, I won’t be watching, didn’t like him any more on this season then I did on his season.
PEA PUREE FOREVER!!!
Thank you, Racheal
Hmm. That beer pong loving trying to be edgy frat boy ‘do has gots to go, Blais.
Richard Blaise. Top Chef. Caps an amazing season, and he deserved it. Believing in food as an experience to be shared and cherished as well as having an insane competitive drive is why Blaise won. He was humble and compassionate, and his humility never came off as disingenuous.
I think I was on the fence with Blais and Isabella until Iz stole his recipe and won with it… I was fuming for days after that little stunt. I agree with most of the posts regarding Blais, he definitely would NOT have been emotionally OK if he hadn’t of won where Isabella would have been just fine.
Did anyone else feel a little cheated though in the preview clips they showed of the finale at the end of the second last episode? I have noticed this more than once, but when they show Padma saying “you are Top Chef” and her eyes are pointed in a particular direction, you can guess who she is addressing, and inadvertently they are revealing the winner! I have been waiting for the winner to be Blaise for a week since that shot aired, it was so obvious she was looking at Richard!
Not that I minded, in this case. I wanted Richard to win!
snooze..
First time watching as the season ran too, was SO afraid that Blais wouldn’t win! He certainly deserves it 🙂
Richard is so adorable! His wife is a very lucky woman.
OMG Mary Ann I want to come to your house and eat with Blais! I love him! And I just adore Carla, her spirit is so wonderful. She has always been my favorite personality of all the chefs that have ever been on the show, she reminds me of a muppet when her hair is all crazy 🙂 love her and congrats to Richard, well deserved!
@Theresa – yeah, I noticed that, too. Last season as well. I try to ignore the clips for the next week but saw that clip inadvertently. Don’t do that again, Top Chef producers!!!
@Falula – Blech, Hosea. Def the worst winner.
@MaryAnn – Tell RB that I had trouble making his microwave cake in a paper cup that he did on…hmm?…the Today show? No idea what I did wrong, either. I still love him though!
I’m just enjoying reading all the comments about how you guys love Top Chef. And how you guys love Carla (I thought I was the only one.)
For those who might not have seen this before – here’s a link to pictures of Carla from her modeling days. http://www.styleite.com/media/carla-hall-modeling-photos/
Thanks for putting up those photos of Carla. She’s got beautiful structure, but very stiff poses. She’s better off as the great chef that she is. If I were rich and could hire anyone to be my personal chef, I’d prob. pick her or Antonia. I also grew to appreciate Mike, although I really disliked him in his season. I think the judges were afraid to have Blaise lose with all those sharp knives so nearby. I’m happy for him and it’s nice to see that Mike was a good “loser”. Great season. Best reality show ever. (although I’m addicted to RuPaul’s Drag Race)
