These are some new photos of Cate Blanchett launching “The Oasis: Homeless Short Film Competition” in Sydney, Australia yesterday. It’s a funky name for a competition, right? It makes it sound like the homeless people are making the films? But they’re not. The competition is actually for young, aspiring Australian filmmakers to create three-minute movies about the plight of homeless youths. The winner gets $25,000 – for their school. Blanchett told the media:
“Film and theatre and the visual arts I really strongly believe have an exceptional and unique capacity to spread important social issues and help produce change in our community. I’d like to encourage school students – both primary and secondary – to not only pick up a camera and participate in the competition but to use the education resource and to delve into the issues and make outstanding films. Films that raise awareness, tell really inspiring stories and provide solutions that not only touch our hearts, but provoke us into making real action… These kids who pick up these cameras will be the strategists and policy makers and artists of the future.”

Sure. I guess there are worse things, totally. But I’m just saying: funky name.
In other Blanchett news, she has a new film coming out! It’s that weird/cool looking one called Hanna, with Eric Bana doing a German (?) accent and Blanchett doing a Southern accent and Saoirse Ronan as Hanna, the teenage assassin. I actually want to see it, just because I like everyone involved. And it actually looks like a solid action-thriller. But I’m worried about it too – the movie opens on Friday and Cate has barely done anything to promote it. I can’t even find any premiere photos – will there even be a premiere? I need a heavy dose of Blanchett boob frame!!! Here’s the trailer:
So I’ll have to settle for that and these weeks-old photos of Cate in a fabulous red suit.
Photos courtesy of WENN.
that suit is awesome! she’s a great actress by d way but maybe d movie is so low budget there’s no fund for promotion??
i don’t know how these things work.
She’s always such a lady.
Love the red dress, it looks great with her pale skin.
the red suit that is
Saoirse and Eric Bana were on the Today Show talking about the movie. Maybe Cate doesn’t have a lead role or is too busy in Australia to promote it (?).
It does look good, though.
She even sits pretty.
@brin, left some love on Clive’s desk.
Cate = Regal Realness
Gwyneth = Try-Hard Trash
These pics just made me want to say that…=0)
(Cate, we all know who really deserved that Best Actress Oscar!!!)
She is my favourite star by far. The movie looks interesting…I’d like to see it
@Rita….lol! See, that’s why I missed you! For the Rita who’s hubby doesn’t read her junk: we can share Clive.
Mabye she’s remaining “abstinent.”
I really want to see this movie!!
@brie #5 Thanks so much for the Today show tip. I just watched it and wow, Bana looks sooooo hot in his leather jacket.
For anyone else who wants to watch, here is the link:

I want that red suit!
She is always so classy. Tacky celebs take note.
Love her, she is so beautiful!
‘Cuz that’s how she rolls! I love her!
@ Bill Hicks is God: I think you may be right! Ha!
Because she’s too busy bein’ sexy.
Cate runs the Sydney Theater Company (or something- google it) with her husband, so I imagine that they are in season and she needs to be in Australia.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her- she can pretty much do no wrong in my book!
Wow, she’s a creepy bad-ass! I don’t know if this is a worth watching movie, I really am not into movie where scriccioli (tiny people) break giants into pieces. It looks entertainign though.
And Cate is always a class act, no need to say it.
I will see this movie simply because she’s in it. She is amazing.
Cate the Great betta werq that red suit! She looks so classy and regal as always! Love her! <
I think the movie looks weird and bad. Even with a name cast studios will cut back on promotion because they think it’s a lost cause.
lainey linked an interview talking about the movie in depth, so how s she not promoting it? It looks really awesome too
I remember her saying she doesn’t even remember her real hair color. This color is a winner. So is that dress. Fine in red!
Louise, I’m pretty sure Hanna is getting good reviews. Saoirse Ronan is amazing and I can’t imagine for a minute the movie is considered a ‘lost cause’.
I’ve been lookin forward to that movie ever since I heard of it.
Apart from the awesome cast, it also seems to different from other thrillers. Can’t wait to see it.
I don’t normally give Cate much credit in the hottie/girl crush department; she’s just too classy but here goes. Never mind her boobs, look at those legs! Toned but not sinewy, a lovely shade of flawless ivory without a blemish. When will Cate be speaking about her diet and exercise regimen?
What I usually give her credit for – that red suit is amazing. My friends with similar coloring to Cate’s would think that color was too much for them. I hope they see these photos.
Why? Because she’s Cate Blanchett, Queen of Film! 😀 She’s intelligent, funny, witty and charming in all of the interviews I’ve ever read of her, besides being gracious, humble and generous. And she’s obviously proud of being an Aussie, and that kind of makes me glow inside. 🙂
@Annaloo (comment #7) – yes! That Oscar was absolutely Cate’s for ‘Elizabeth’ – ‘Shakespeare in Love’ was OK but it wasn’t great enough for Goopy to win that Oscar for it!
Did a little research on this movie. The reviews are really promising, and they’re all raving about Ronan, the girl playing the main character. She trained for 4-5 hours a day to prepare for this assassin role, and watching that trailer, she looks better than some of the grown women you see trying to pull the same thing off (I specifically leave men out of it because…let’s face it. Men are usually naturally built to succeed in this sort of role. Everything about a man’s physique compliments it. Women have to work harder to be convincing). Blanchett says the script blew her away with how frightening it is, or something like that. I’m WAY excited to see this now.
yeah, i saw the preview and it looks pretty damn good. and cate is working the evil angle. not sure why she’s not promoting it. just as surprised as you that it’s coming out soon and very little on it.
The contest sounds cool
