For some reason, we’ve been covering every fart and burp that comes out of the casting rumor mill for Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. We already know that Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine will be reprising their roles, and we know that Anne Hathaway was cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The latest additions to the cast – Joseph Gordon Levitt and Marion Cotillard – were announced in February and March, although their characters haven’t been confirmed until now. Oh, and we know that Tom Hardy was likely cast as Bane, and SPOILER if you read the comics, you know what casting Bane means for the series. So, many already had a strong feeling that this was going to be the last Batman from the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale pairing. But at this point, the cast has grown so large and there are so many storylines, I don’t see how this is not going to be a really weak, schizophrenic plot. So… would you like to know what roles JGL and Marion have taken? I guarantee that you never considered this junk:
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of The Dark Knight Rises, the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend.
Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.
The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster Inception.
The director stated, “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”
Heading the cast of The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane. Josh Pence, who played the body of one of the Winkelvo.
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
[From Coming Soon]
So, Marion is going to play a corporate bureaucrat with a philanthropic bent, and JGL is going to play a beat cop. Er…? The idea of Marion, who is in reality a space cadet, an eccentric, crazy, beautiful hot mess of a woman, playing it “straight” as a corporate type is totally bizarre. It’s like… I don’t know, hiring Angelina Jolie to play an insurance saleswoman. Or hiring Sofia Vergara to play a neurosurgeon. It’s an odd casting choice. As for JGL… well, I want to think that this part will be meaty, but I doubt it. It’s probably a pity part.
But yeah, this movie is probably going to have about 30 sub-plots. Ridic.

So the roles aren’t exciting…would you rather have 5 billion villains in the film competing for screen time? No it would probably be too much.
And seriously, I would pay $10 to only watch JGL eat a banana. I don’t care what that man plays, his talent and good looks will get me to the theatre.
I’d rather see Marion as Catwoman…
god i want this movie to suck soooo bad!
Sooo, basically it’s the entire ‘inception’ cast crashing batman. all we need is leo playing…i don’t know, the riddler or something, and the cast is complete.
i’m bitching but i’ll definitely still watch. the casting is all very odd. anne as catwoman? marion playing it straight? meh.
Of course Cotillard’s character will be boring. EVERY role she is in is boring. I do not understand how she keeps getting roles-she simply cannot act.
Oh, I did used to read the comics as a kid and I think I know here this is going. In a fountain.
And why am I always awaiting moderation?
In that case, Marianne, may I direct you here:

BANANA
@Kazoo : Christopher Nolan always uses the same actors again. He had worked with Christian Bale beofre Batman in The Prestige, Cillian he was in the Batman films ended up in Inception, and now Tom Hardy, JGL and Marion Cotillard (from Inception) are now in the Batman films.
@embertine: Ha Ha Ha Thanks! That just made my day 🙂
hahahahah, you never fail to crack me up kaiser…too good.
You make Marion C. sound more interesting than she really is. The girl is boring and a real bitch with her native France. Ever since she’s been to HW , she’s acting like she’s such a great star. If it wasn’t for her french success she wouldn’t even be there today.
Is it weird that I just got all hot and bothered to find Nolan refereed to JGL as Joe? I want to moan the name Joe as I watch him eat that Banana…and maybe some other fruit…while he sings…
I hope Miranda Tate is twist for Talia, otherwise – boring
…W.T.H. This reminds me of dirty dancing…nobody puts JGL in a crappy part. UCH. This better be a cop part that rivals every freaking Scorsese film out there. As a huge batman nerd, I’m really, REALLY unhappy with this. I <3 Marion Cotillard but I really don’t see her as Miranda. Anne Hathaway on the other hand….perfect. UCH. Christopher Nolan needs to hire me to freaking do casting. Of course, this will be the last Batman, so. Have I mentioned UCH????
edit
@LeManda…that is not weird. It means your straight. For Christs, sake the awkward kid from 3rd Rock and 10 Things is seriously one of the best looking men in the world. Oh, and he can act too hahaha :))I’m RIGHT there with you, sister.
Oh man, what would I not do to Joseph Gorden Levitt? I just… the guys too hot for words.
The thing about Chris Nolan’s Batman that works in its favor is the lack of camp absurdity that characterizes superhero movies. It’s easy to suspend disbelief in the world Nolan creates. And that’s because the characters and storylines have a very ordinary base. Gotham City feels like a real city. JGL and MC’s characters are no different from other of the characters. Rachel Dawes was a district attorney. Scarecrow is a psychiatrist. The people that populate Nolan’s Gotham are ordinary city people in an extraordinary landscape. We shouldn’t expect them to be anything but ordinary. This isn’t Tim Burton’s Batman. Let’s keep it that way.
@Marianne, yes now that you point it out, i see it! wow. hmm. i mean loyalty is nice but he should be careful & make sure he’s putting the right person in place for the character.
JGL is really hot. and I would totally maul him, but it is a bit distracting how much he resembles Heath Ledger in the face. So I think if he played one of the costumed villains, that would be quite hard to suspend disbelief and not continually think of HL. (Still really miss seeing HL – that for me was the tragic celebrity death of the decade, I think he was truly something special.)
Geez, Kaiser, have some faith in Christopher Nolan! He kept his mouth shut and never said a word about Talia or Alberto Falcone; it was just the rest of the media that insisted on playing the guessing game. Yes, most of us (including myself) have no idea who these characters are — and I think that’s pretty awesome. Nolan has yet to make a bad movie, so let’s just trust him a little bit, yeah?
“The idea of Marion, who is in reality a space cadet, an eccentric, crazy, beautiful hot mess of a woman, playing it “straight” as a corporate type is totally bizarre.”
That’s why it’s called “acting” I guess…
I love Marion Cotillard as an actress. I think she’s gifted and I think she’s a total sex-pot. Her role in Inception was really haunting. Some of you may not agree with me. I see this movie being something ridiculously wonderful. Nolan has too much success under his belt to flop now. If he isn’t really thinking all of this through, if he really doesn’t have a great script and story, then I’ll be shocked.
Joseph Gordon Levitt is soooo dreamy (sigh)
@ravensparrow: Spot on. Giving her way to much credit here.
I think she’s a good actress in French but all of her English speaking roles have been so meh.
JGL can play ANYTHING HE WANTS and be yummy.
