Back in January, Star Magazine ran a front page cover story (image below) suggesting that Katie Holmes was a drug addict. The inside story (detailed here if you’re interested) was about how the auditing sessions in Katie and Tom’s Scientology cult could be addicting like drugs. The real details of Scientology’s scary brainwashing practices are more shocking than a drug addiction, but I understand Star going for a bait and switch cover with a more accessible angle. The cult stuff has been covered quite a bit before.
Well “Katie” aka the Sci Goons, sued Star Magazine for $50 million for libel as a result. That was back in early March. Since then, Star canned their editor and it doesn’t seem like a coincidence. Star has now issued a front page apology for insinuating that Katie was addicted to drugs and they’re giving an undisclosed donation to a charity of her choice. I was assuming Katie’s charity would be Scientology-related, but according to Reuters it’s the “Dizzy Feet Foundation,” which Katie co-founded and helps give dance classes to underprivileged youth.
Star Magazine just issued a MASSIVE mea culpa to Katie Holmes — publishing an apology on the COVER of its latest issue … after the tabloid printed a headline suggesting Katie was a drug addict.
Katie filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against the magazine last month, claiming Star’s January headline — “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE! Katie DRUG SHOCKER! — was “untrue, unethical and unlawful.”
Katie’s rep tells TMZ, the lawsuit is now water under the bridge … that it’s been settled … and Star’s publisher American Media even made a “substantial” donation to Katie’s charity.
As for Star’s in-mag apology — it reads in part, “Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction. Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception …”
Katie released her own statement today, saying, “I’m pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably and accept American Media’s apology.”

At least the money is going to decent charity. Maybe Star will clean up its act a little under Radar Online editor David Perel, who is taking over for former editor Candace Trunzo. I hope they stay trashy but get a little more truthful.

She’s been a zombie since 2005. What some 4th tier gossip tabloid says about her is the least of her problems.
IDK, she has been looking a little bit more animated and healthier lately and I hope it continues.
But I’m more way more interested in the Judd daughter FBI rescue!!
I’m glad that Star was held accountable for their lies. I remember when Katie first filed the lawsuit, everyone here was saying that she had no chance, it was just a publicity stunt and she’d drop the case. Looks like she proved y’all wrong. Well done.
I just find it amusing. xD They ‘Didn’t mean to suggest that Katie Holmes was using drugs’, when the headline reads: “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE: Katie DRUG SHOCKER”
Not often you get an apology from STAR for their ridiculous ‘stories’, she must’ve kicked their collective asses with both feet.
Go Katie!!
Total, complete speculation here, but I think she is mentally unstable, unwell, ill, whatever, and has been unable to get help from Scientology. She just gets audited. I think scientology’s strong no-meds stance is interfering with her ability to get the help she needs. I know it is just conjecture, from photos, but she just looks so spaced out. I want her tell- all book Soooooo bad. Please Katie!?
There is definitely something off with her. I hope she gets away from him as soon as possible and takes Suri with her.
It was a publicity stunt, for both sides. Katie had no damages and this case never went anywhere. Star had some culpability because it was a lousy, misleading headline; Katie wasn’t ever going to take it to the mat because she couldn’t go through the discovery process, so they figured out a way to make everyone happy. Star will sell tons of magazines with the “apology” — this is all one big game for both of them.
well did she admit to being hypnotized, at least. LOL
I think she looks cute in those last pics.
She looks like she is more confident in those recent pics. Being married to an arrogant creep like him must be hard on self-esteem.
Katie sold her womb, her soul and her child to an evil cult and I have no pity for her. She does look like she’s been sneaking some xanax or klonopins though.
Me thinketh thou protest to much Katie.
If it wasnt true she wouldnt have siced Toms legal team on Star! There are many lies told about them that they dont argue or sue over so the fact that she sued over this makes it obvious it hit home most likely because she does have a drug problem.
I am so glad she won. Magazines should stop writing things that they know are not true and intentionally hurt people. Hopefully Star learned its lesson for good.
@Kim: I think the Holmes-Cruise clan probably thought accusations of drug abuse are a bridge too far. Like how Cameron Diaz and Katy Perry have only acted on tabloid accusations of infidelity, despite all the crap that gets written about them.
Star did go out of their way to make it sound like she had subtance abuse issues, when they were simply referring to possible over-reliance on Scientology practices.
Come to think of it, this may have been Sci’s only solid chance to sue a mag for what they say about Scientology!
The recent photos seems to indicate that the spooks running Katie’s life have healthed her up a bit. Not that I’m fooled into thinking she’s more well in her head, but hey, she’s gonna need her strength in case she wakes up enough to begin extricating herself and her kid.
