Did Kate Middleton wear something borrowed & something blue?

Okay, I know, I know, ANOTHER DRESS POST. You love it, don’t lie! So there’s, like, a million pieces of information about The Dress. The Dress and How It Will Change Everything, Forever. By the way, I just want to say: I TOTALLY CALLED IT. I mean, I was wrong about it NOT being McQueen, so obviously I have to suck that up (I apologize). But when I first saw the dress, my immediate thought was Grace Kelly’s famous wedding gown, and I wrote that in my post. Now everybody else is jumping on! While Kate didn’t have Grace’s dress copied completely, the two dresses do seem very similar, especially from the waist up.

As for the “borrowed, blue, old, new” tradition, Our Girl had it covered. According to People Mag:

Her wedding entrance by car over carriage was a modern touch, but Catherine Middleton seems to have stayed true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The Palace tells PEOPLE the newly ennobled Duchess of Cambridge paid homage to each of these categories – from her v-neck Alexander McQueen gown to her 1936 Cartier tiara – when she married Prince William on Friday at the Westminster Abbey.

Something old
Middleton’s wedding dress, designed by McQueen creative director Sarah Burton, featured a long-sleeved lace overlay that paid respect to the Arts and Craft custom. This tradition, characterized by the Carrickmacross lace-making technique used in the dress design, is a tribute to British craftsmanship.

Something new
As a wedding gift, Middleton’s parents, Carole and Michael, gave the bride a pair of leaf-shaped diamond earrings, which were made by Robinson Pelham to match her tiara.

Something borrowed
The Queen lent Middleton the glittering 1936 Cartier halo-style tiara that crowned her curls. The tiara has been in the Royal Family since it was purchased by King George VI for the Queen Mother.

Something blue
Although Middleton appeared to be all dressed in white, a hint of blue ribbon was sewn into the gown.

[From People]

Wait, the “something old” was the craftsmanship of the gown? It can’t be theoretically old, it has to be old, literally. Which is why I think the tiara was doing double time as something borrowed and something old.

As for the styling, specifically Kate’s hair and (too heavy) makeup, Us Weekly has the scoop:

Besides a Cartier tiara and pave diamond jewels, the best wedding-day accessories for Kate Middleton were her picture-perfect hair and makeup.

After much speculation as to which coiffure would do the royal ‘do, the 29-year-old bride did in fact stick with her tried-and-true hairstylist, James Pryce of the Richard Ward Salon and Metrospa.

Middleton has been going to the Sloane Square salon for over eight years. According to the Daily Mail, “Kate wanted to look like herself on her wedding day. She told salon owner Richard Ward, ‘William must recognize me by the time I get to the alter.'”

A source tells Us Weekly, “Kate had around four or five tryouts. She brought along photos of the styles she liked and showed them to James. Hairstyle tests were then done in a top-secret location. Kate was very pleased with the result.”

There’s no doubt that the classic half-up, half-down coif (her brunette tresses done in cascading ringlets) paid homage to her everyday easy, breezy blowout. Sources say Pryce will be on hand with Middleton throughout the day to ensure that not a strand falls out of place.

As for Middleton’s flawless makeup, rumors are buzzing that she did it herself — possibly using cosmetic brand Bobbi Brown. Just last week, the bride-to-be was spotted making a purchase that included “eye makeup and basics that were a shade darker than she usually uses in the winter” at the brand’s cosmetic counter at London’s Peter Jones department store last week, a source at the company tells Us.

Regardless of what the Middleton used, experts agree that she looked absolutely radiant.

“Her complexion was perfect and her makeup completed the fluidly femininity of her soft look,” beauty specialist Sarah Chapman tells Us. “She carried off the English rose look well with fresh rosy cheeks and nude lips that were balanced by her strong eyes and glossy dark hair. You can tell she looks after her skin very well, which allows her to pull off a natural look.”

And with a sparkler like the 18-carat sapphire engagement ring that once belonged to the late Princess Diana, a flawless manicure is necessary. The bride’s nails were done by the Duchess of Cornwall’s manicurist, Marina Sandoval from the Jo Hansford Salon in Mayfair, who used a combination of Essie Allure (a sheer, beige pink) and Bourjois Rose Lounge (a light, milky pink).

[From Us Weekly]

Eh. You know what I think about the makeup. I won’t repeat myself. But I do like that Kate wanted to look like herself on her wedding, and I think she achieved that.

I figured the “something blue” would be Diana’s ring, but she didn’t have the engagement ring on when she arrived, and I don’t think she put it on after the band, either!
Is that not part of the tradition in the royal family/Britain?

  2. Franny says:

god I just love that dress. I wish that more people dressed like this. When you compare it to Leann’s sexy bride (read: skanky bride) look, this is classic.

  3. Me says:

Is it just me or does she have more of a presence than he does? She looks like royalty he looks like the bellhop.

  4. the original bellaluna says:

Fabulous. On to HGF then, yeah?

  5. daisydoodle says:

@Brittney, she did wear her engagement ring, it was on her right hand, so he could put her wedding band on her left easily. She looked beautiful.

  6. ladybert62 says:

That Grace Kelly picture is outstanding – my oh my, she was truly magnificent. Kate is right in that category also!

Where is Kate’s wedding ring? Any info on that?

  7. Franny says:

Brittney: I thought she was wearing it on her right hand?

  8. Minx2 says:

She had the ring on, just on her right hand.. I guess for the ceremony, she didn’t want to detract from the wedding band. I think that Diana did the same thing.

  9. Kloops says:

I am way late to this game (just woke up, bitches) but I think she looks absolutely beautiful even – gasp – her makeup. I’m giving her a pass for the eyeliner. Just for today. And the dress is perfection. This was the culmination of 9 long years of Waity non-work. Girlfriend nailed it.

  10. Kate says:

That is one fugly lil’ girl.

  11. K says:

Her makeup looks a bit Xtina. Heavy hand is not a good idea for wedding makeup, dear Waity-No-More!

  12. REALIST says:

Grace Kelly in that dress—Dior, btw, real Dior-takes your breath away.
    No comparison.

  13. Delta Juliet says:

I only got to see the very end (I DVR’d the ceremony though. Very nice, sedate, regal etc. She looked nice, she looked like herself which is important. I wish she had worn her hair up, but whatever.

But, when I look at them, don’t they look a lot older than a couple in their 20’s? They both look 40 at least.

  14. courtney says:

    Ouch don’t be so fough on kate she may not be a fashion plate princess like Diana or Grace [who mind you had won an oscar about 13 months before she married prince Rainier with whom if they were both still alive she’d have celebrated her 55th wedding anniversary earlier this month.}

  15. Abby says:

I don’t get the hate for the makeup. I think she looked great.

  16. stacey says:

I kept doing a double take when I looked at Kate because her left eye makeup was different from her right. It was hard to look at. I’m not sure why she went for such a heavy eye-liner. Her mother did the same thing which had an even more odd effect with her classy and understated dress.

  17. Franny says:

ugh, Courtney needs to learn how to construct a sentence that is not just one long, run-on sentence about celebrity history.

  18. meg says:

I kinda get why she wouldn’t want something that was actually “old”. Me- I wore an old pair of drawers LOL Changed em before hubby saw tho. But I didn’t borrow anything so screw that crappy tradition!

  19. Rachel says:

I thought her makeup looked good.

  20. CooCooCatchoo says:

That dress was perfection. I loved Princess Margaret’s dress, and Princess Grace’s. Old school glam, something she’ll be able to look back on years from now and still love. I had a feeling the dress would have a fitted bodice with long sleeves and a full skirt, and it did. Exquisite fit – the bodice looked molded to her. Pippa looked amazing as well. The whole day had hints of an American style too – maid of honor, canapé and champagne reception with a dinner dance party this evening. The music today was gorgeous – and so was Harry 🙂 I half expected him to moon the crowd from the carriage LOLZ! I kinda wish she’d worn her hair up, though in a chignon. Other than that, perfection!

  21. kazoo says:

the more i look at the dress, the more i like it. the lace is just beautiful.

her make up looks a bit…idk. it makes her look, for lack of a better term, exotic. like, if i didn’t know who she was, i’d think she was maybe greek or italian. so i like it for that ethnically ambiguous aspect.

i love the tiara. went well with the veil, didn’t overpower the look. very nice.

pippa’s dress is more my taste, though. i loved hers the moment i saw it.

  22. mamaT says:

a cross between grace kelly’s and maria von trapp’s dresses for sure.

  23. MoMo says:

I think her eye-makeup choice was suitable for sunlight. It was the television lighting in the Abbey that made it less flattering.

  24. JulieM says:

Realist: FYI- Grace Kelly’s dress was designed by Helen Rose, costume designer for MGM where Grace was under contract. I think that part of the deal to end her contract with MGM early so she could marry Rainier was to allow Rose to design her dress. And WOW, just one of the most iconic wedding dresses of the 20th century. I totally agree with you that classic/real Dior is unsurpassable, but he did not design her dress.

  25. Chickie Baby says:

She looked lovely. The dress was also reminiscent of Julie Andrews’ gown in “The Sound of Music.”

Hopefully Catherine’s elegance will start a trend back toward ‘classy’ wedding styles here in the States, and move away from some of the boob-a-licious frocks that seem to be so popular now. The tradition behind the religious ceremony about bridal gowns seems to have been forgotten by some brides.

  26. teehee says:

Im not too hot about the dress; but will say that theres only so many ways a white laced dress can look— brides dresses are all gonna look fairly similar to one another when they have the same basic cut. Its not like she was going to have the lace portion on the bottom (skirt) instead of up top on the arms LOL so ….

  27. lin234 says:

Do you guys have any close up shots of her earrings? Just wondering what they look like up close. I think she really nailed it although in some shots elsewhere, her mouth lines and eye bags really come out and make her look closer to 40 than still in her twenties.

  28. bananapanda says:

Thank you Chickie baby- strapless bridal gowns are an abomination and tacky even if you are skinny. I’m so impressed that they pulled this wedding off so beautifully- yet it seemed like a happy family day too. Kate’s parents are so sweet and everyone gets along so well. That fly by was fun!

  29. e says:

She looked pretty but aside from the jewelry, I could see anyone wearing that dress. Obviously not every bride could afford that designer or craftsmanship but the design of the dress was simple. I know she covered up because of where she was married but I do wish that more brides would get away from the strapless dress. The lace sleeves looked great. I hated the makeup but I didn’t expect her to change her ways this late in the game. I can’t really say anything bad, she is a pretty girl but then you look at Grace Kelly and just WOW. When you talk iconic beauty and fashion icon Kate pales in comparison.

  30. lin234 says:

While I think the lace sleeves look really sweet on her and this occasion, it’s a tough look to pull off for a wedding in terms that it can easily look cheap when it’s not done with the right materials and setting. I think there are some girls that look great in strapless dresses because its modern, simple, and fits with a simpler church and hotel reception type of setting.

A side note: hopefully if Kate has a boy, he’ll get his hair genes from her side of the family. Her dad has really thick and great hair for his age!

  31. Richie says:

Everything about Kate looked fantastic! God bless them both! you could see that William is so in love wz her!

  32. Darlene says:

Her makeup and EVERYTHING looked just perfect. She was lovely lovely lovely.

  33. Hollowdoll says:

In my opinion Kate is no more attractive than her sister. To me she comes off a little mannish. Over all my feels regarding her are, meh.

  34. Kiska says:

I LOVED her dress. It was elegant and cut beautifully for her figure. I like that it wasn’t overblown and that she kept it simple.

  35. REALIST says:

Thanks Julie. Nice parting gift from MGM, aye? When you think about it, a wedding dress is more like a costume than anything, so who better to design it than a costume designer?
Bit of a bummer, though-I always thought it was Dior-we cam blame my mum-she told me that, and she was a FAN of Princess Grace.
I watched every minute of Chas and Diana’s wedding. Loved the dress on TV, in person at Kensington Palace (1992)-meh. But that was the beginning of the Big 80’s, so it was appropriate for the day.

  36. jane16 says:

Loved the dress and hair. What I didn’t like about her makeup, was a) too heavy, and b) thought her lips could have used a little more color. Loved the pic of Grace btw. Stunning.

  37. Beatrice says:

Dress was pretty and classy. I loved the silhouette and the short train. At first I thought it was sort of ho-hum plain, though. However, after reading the official description, I realized the dress was probably a lot more intricate and beautiful than it looked on TV. I don’t think the details (other than the lace bodice and sleeves)showed up well. As for the makeup, I think it makes her look hard and older than she is. Even so, she was still a beautiful bride.

  38. Ron says:

I thought she looked absolutely perfect. This will usher in classic wedding dresses with sleeves again, which is so welcome. I think she has a great sense of style.

  39. BeckyR says:

When did Catherine’s veil get lifted from her face??? Must have missed this bit. Thanks, readers…

  40. Mairead says:

It could be that she wore something old or borrowed (depending on whether the tiara was one or t’other) under the dress. She also has to have a sixpence in her shoe to complete the rhyme. 😉

If the lace is the nod to “something old”, apparently the design in the lacework is meant to have the floral symbols from Great Britain – the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the daffodil for Wales and the shamrock for Northern Ireland.

I thought it was a nod to Grace Kelly as well, but really, the design is very reminiscent of Princess Margaret:

  41. Micki says:

After 9 years together William might recognize her even with his eyes shut. She could have tried something less boring than her everyday make up and hair.

  42. Newbie says:

I love that pic of kelly. Amazing.

  43. dorothy says:

    She looked like a princess!

  44. Nikki says:

I know I’m a dork, but I think she looks beautiful and I think they’re adorable together!

  45. Mshuffleupagus says:

    REALIST:

Sorry if I’m misreading, but did you mean that Dior designed Grace Kelly’s dress?
Helen Rose, the wardrobe designer from MGM created it.

  46. 4Real says:

She looks timeless and I think they are adorable also…

I KNEW I SAW THAT DRESS BEFORE on a ROYAL! It was buggin me…

  47. Poppy says:

Here is some pictorial history of the Tiara, often worn in the past by Princess Anne and Princess Margaret

    http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2011/03/tiara-thursday-scroll-tiara.html

More pictures of the Bride and Groom and wedding party here, as well as a close up of Kates earrings it looks like diamonds surrounding a drop pearl in the centre. Also a picture of her dress from the evening dinner/disco ….alas its really quite boring.

    http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/

  48. You don't say says:

    Old: lace work
    Borrowed: Tiara from the Queen
    New: Earrings from parents
Blue: Apparently a bit of blue was in the button detail on the back of the dress

  49. Jo says:

i love how one of the English commentator interviews a royal insider (forgot the name) prior to the ceremony and asks him what career paths will Kate Middleton take pursue and he names like several professions.. That made me laugh. What a joke. This woman had 8 years with William doing nothing. And on top of that, she has no major ties or association to charities. Sounds like a lazy free riding royal consort to me.

  50. Az says:

Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, hello?

  51. Franny says:

I’m seriously having post wedding depression knowing my life will never be like this 🙁

  52. DeeVine says:

Very brave of her to do her own make up and it was perfect. Gorgeous! Grace Kelly was such an amazing natural beauty too.

  53. Gemma says:

By the way, the reason she had to have her ring on the other hand is because your wedding ring finger has to be free of any other rings for the ceremony – at least in the Church of England (which, by the way, William will be the head of as well when he becomes king). I had to do the same thing when I got married, and I was terrified of it falling off, because I could only fit my ring halfway onto my other finger, my ring finger is tiiiiny!
