Cameron Diaz takes on pregnancy in ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’

Millions of women, including myself, have endured pregancy with the indispensible help of a little book called What to Expect When You’re Expecting. In fact, I’d suspect that purhasing this book (or borrowing it from a friend) is one of the first things that pregnant women do after freaking out over a positive pregnancy test. The bestseller is a very matter-of-fact guide to what’s going on at all stages of gestation and even includes some rather icky post-natal discussions; it does not mince words, and it is not a lovey-dovey, narrative-styled piece of literature. Naturally, Hollywood wants to ruin the book by lifting the title (for name recognition purposes) and adapting it into a form of romantic comedy starring none other than Cameron Diaz. This piece of news comes from Deadline’s Mike Fleming, whose sources are usually right on the money:

Nothing’s official yet, but I’m expecting Cameron Diaz to have a deal shortly to star in Lionsgate’s What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the Kirk Jones-directed romantic comedy adaptation of Heidi Murkoff’s bestselling how-to manual. The pic has a script by Heather Hach and Shauna Cross. Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and David Thwaites are producing, and Doug McKay is co-producer. Murkoff and husband Erik Murkoff are exec producers with Alan Nevins. The idea is to take a book that has sold north of 16 million copies, and turn into a pic in the vein of Love Actually, where five couples experience the surprises that happen when a stork visit is imminent.

Diaz just started production today alongside Colin Firth in Gambit, the Michael Hoffman-directed caper comedy that was scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. Shooting on What To Expect When You’re Expecting will begin in July. Diaz is repped by CAA and Rick Yorn.

[From Deadline]

What’s even worse than the retooling of the book’s subject matter into a nonrecognizable, episodic, mushy series of pre-birth marriage proposals and (inevitably) someone giving birth in the back seat of a cab is the fact that we’re going to have to watch Cameron Diaz freak out when her water breaks. The notion of Diaz giving a believable performance as a pregnant woman is completely laughable, which is partially her fault by giving all of those “soundbite”-styled interviews about how she loves her life more than the idea of having children and thinks marriage a dying institution. While Diaz will be acting like a pregnant woman in this movie, will it seem even remotely authentic to the target audience, who presumably enjoys the thought of having children and also feels a lot differently about marriage than Cameron seems to do? And don’t even get me started on how annoying her screams will sound in a birth scene.

Holy crap, I had to click on this article because I was sure that you mistakenly used a picture of Ellen Barkin. (Not that I don’t love EB, but they really shouldn’t be looking like sisters.)

I hated the What to Expect book – it’s doom and gloom plus shilling for all the other items that they sell (A day planner! A sticker chart! A set of temporary tattoos! What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Expect a Sibling!) There’s a great set of books for the dads called The Caveman’s Guide to Pregnancy which were funny and really informative.

  2. serena says:

I hope it’s not confirmed. What an hypocrite.

  3. Maritza says:

She really likes showing off her legs a lot, her dresses are way too short and fugly!

  4. cookie says:

Bad top photo or has she done something to her face? She looks weird.

  5. Marjalane says:

Me thinks “not afraid to age” Cami had a little work done recently. The lower portion of her face is oddly jacked.

Man, she’s going to work those legs to death, isn’t she?!

  6. girl says:

I thought the book was shit also. So alarmist and unnecessary. I NEVER read it while I was pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Glad I didn’t, especially now that I am a more experienced mother. Dr. Sear’s books are far better.

  7. Working says:

@ Maritza if i had those legs i would walk around like pantless racoon!! Lol. I honestly thinks she looks fantastic

  8. Bodhi says:

@Gabrielle ~ A friend gave my husband the Caveman book & he loved it! Well, loved it so much that he actually read it & remembered some of what it taught him!

I bought “What to Expect” & read a little bit of it. I thought it was informative in a general sense, but it was defiantly alarmist & I didn’t like that it focused more on the medical model of childbirth & gave hardly any info about the midwife model.

Anyway… The decision that Cammie could convincingly play a pregnant woman must have been made by a man! There is no way she can do it! (Not that only moms can convincingly play a pregnant woman)

  9. lilred says:

@serena: How exactly is she a hypocrite? She may not want ankle biters of her own, but she can still act in a movie about them that does not make her a hypocrite.

  10. RHONYC says:

i found that book on the $1 rack in the public library when i was 3 months pregnant & it is ‘THE’ pregnancy bible. there is no substitute. i found the illustrations of each monthly stage especially useful. 🙂

  11. ladybert62 says:

That is exactly what I thought – I am sick of seeing those legs! I guess since her face is looking ancient that she is drawing attention to her legs – she looks too old to be beliveable as a young (I assume) mother to be – I just dont buy her in that role.

  12. alma says:

i actually loved the book 😀 but i hate the idea of her being in the movie. please choose a real mom!!

  13. bluhare says:

Jesus, Cammy. Hang up those micro minis. They look like crap on anyone over 5’2″ who isn’t a cheerleader. Including you.

  14. original kate says:

so only actresses who have had a baby or want one should play a mother? i guess actors/actresses who are gay can’t play straight, sober can’t play alcoholic, healthy can’t play ill, etc. while i think cami is a bad actress and the movie sounds like crap she certainly shouldn’t be denied a role because of her views on marriage & motherhood. she isn’t a pedophile, for christ’s sake – is a woman who doesn’t want to produce rugrats really that threatening to the mommy brigade?

  15. Mika says:

Bedhead, child birth is like anything else, you can pretend it’s happening. I’ve been to a live birth and seen many on TV… besides the blood and poop and real tears, the mother acted pretty much the same way. Diaz doesn’t want kids, fine, but she’s an actress. Actresses ACT. Straight people play gay, good people play murderers, and childless people play parents. If you think motherhood is somehow “special” and can’t be faked, you need to get over yourself.

Before you all go after me as a childless 23 year old, I want you to know that I showed this to my mother, who is a mother of four and she cosigns.

  16. KateNonymous says:

I skipped the book (enough people told me about the alarmist aspect) and went with a couple of other reliable manuals. I’m pretty sure that, having just gone through this a year ago, I don’t need to see Hollywood’s “interpretation” of the fears, disappointments, and joys of pregnancy and childbirth.

  17. courtney says:

um I agree dcami is a bad actress if you tried to put her in a remake of Summer wishes winter dreams she’d fall flatter than a perm on a hot day. granted the actress that originated the role in the original film nearly 40 years ago is an icon and the role was written specifically for her. ever heard of prothetic make up to make you look younger ever thought maybe Cami can’t have children or is to vain to try

  18. Zelda says:

Holy crap people–why the hate because she doesn’t want kids?

Time and again, I see married people with kids get pissed when someone says they don’t want kids or marriage. I never see the reverse.

If you are happy with your choices you shouldn’t need others to justify them with envy. Some of us don’t want what you have. It’s very lovely for you, but we don’t want it for us. Deal.

  19. karena says:

I don’t want children. People call me selfish. I reply that it is selfish to make another human so that they can feel “complete” or to trap a man into commitment. I have plenty of nieces and nephews to spoil, cuddle and then send home. Being an aunt is the best gig in the world.

  20. Slim Charles says:

We get it – you have great legs. But that first pic make you look desperate to show them off. It’s like you forgot your pants.

I remember the healthy eating plan in “What to Expect…” It said if you were really hungry and wanted to splurge, you could have a bagel. WTF! Who splurges on a bagel?

  21. Ari says:

Karena – I get the same thing and I don’t even bother defending myself.

Them: It’s selfish to not want kids.
    Me: YUP!

    *walks away*

  22. Kim says:

What is she injecting in her face? She looks terrible!

  23. vanessa says:

I wouldn’t watch this movie with her in it. She doesn’t want kids or get married and has never been pregnant, she has absolutely no idea how to portray that even if she has ppl telling her what pregnancy is like. They should pick someone who has had children!

  24. Bodhi says:

I don’t think that anyone is criticizing Cammie’s decision not to have kids (if, in fact, that is what she has decided) or anyone’s decision not to have kids, for that matter. It nobody’s business but your own if you want kids or not.

Personally, I don’t think that she is a very good actress or that she could convincingly play a pregnant woman/mother role.

  25. fizXgirl314 says:

hahahahahahha… I was wondering when she was going to break down and get butchered… celebrities… so predictable *sighhh*

  26. original kate says:

“They should pick someone who has had children!”

    “please choose a real mom!!”

    “What an hypocrite.”

    are you people for real?

  27. Zelda says:

    @original kate
I dunno, I’m starting to see their point.
Think about it: Inglourious Basterds was that much better because Christoph Waltz really IS a Nazi. The Social Network was good beacuse Jesse Eisenberg really IS a website designer. And Christian Bale really DOES fight crime as a masked crusader off-camera as well.
    Logic.

  28. Camille says:

    Lordy she is fug. *shudder*

Totally and completely agree with your last paragraph Bedhead. Great write up 😀 .

  29. original kate says:

“And Christian Bale really DOES fight crime as a masked crusader off-camera”

@ zelda: yes, exactly. people can only play what they are in real life! meryl streep really does have a farm in africa, and johnny depp is a pirate, and michael c. hall really is a serial killer, and charlie sheen really is an alcoholic douchelord…oh wait, that one IS true.

  30. feebee says:

Bodhi has summed up my take on it so I won’t repeat, also agree with the ‘great legs but let’s move on from the micro minis’ sentiment.

I thought it was Tom Cruise who saved people in real life not Christian Bale?

  31. janna says:

yikes!!!! where’s photo shop when you need it?! need to photo shop her face right off that body!!

  32. Zelda says:

    @original kate:
Don’t belittle their accomplishments! Bruce Willis has had an impressive career for a man who is dead people.

  33. Madison says:

No actor is right for every movie role they get offered and Cameron is miscast in this role, the movie would be better with a mom type actrress like reese witherspoon, jennifer garner or julia roberts.

  34. Sparkly says:

That is the WORST pregnancy book out there. How on earth are they making a movie of it? Ugh.

  35. Caz says:

Making a movie out of this book just isn’t right. Is Cameron going to be doing her obligatory dancing around in her undies scene when she realises she’s pregnant? This movie regadless of the actress is such a bad idea. Is Hwood that berefit of decent script ideas?

  36. Ol cranky says:

This could be a great film if they have Tina Fey writing the screenplay

  37. fizXgirl314 says:

btw, why the eff are they making a movie about a pregnancy book? Have we really run out of all other plausible ideas on which to base movies?

Also… those of you who are suggesting they cast a “motherly” type are being sexist or racist or something… Oh I know what it is… retarded.

  38. Newbie says:

    she looks so ROUGH.

  39. Kelly says:

I have nothing against her, but man is she a terrible actress – very distracting!

  40. Ruby says:

I feel sorry for women who choose not to have kids. Not because they are ‘selfish’ but because society judges them. Didn’t feminism teach us we have a choice. I have 3 kids whom I love and would die for. But I am not one of those who gloat and gush about them. They are great but I don’t need to scream it from the roof tops and I hate hearing women carry on like they are little Gods. Being a mother for most part is being a butler, short order cook, janitor, laundromat, nurse, referee etc

  41. Isa says:

I remember when she was cast as the mother in My Sister’s Keeper. I thought she was going to ruin the movie. Not because she doesn’t want or have kids. Anyway she surprised me by not being too bad.

As for this role, I feel like the labor scene is going to be completely overacted. But I guess it would be pretty boring if we watched them sleep through their labor like I did…

Anyway, I love that book. I’m reading it now with this pregnancy. I don’t find it to be alarmist. There’s a lot of information in there that didn’t apply to my pregnancy, so it didn’t freak me out. But there are SO many things that can go wrong during pregnancy. I wanted to be informed about them.

  42. Lindy says:

WTE is alarmist? Really? Maybe I just don’t get freaked out easily, or maybe I just like having as much info as possible. Someone suggested Dr. Sears. I read half of it and got so sick of his sanctimonious crapola that I gave it away. And honestly, I feel about him the way I feel about my OB–at the end of the day, I’m just not going to let some man tell me what pregnancy is like, how childbirth should work, or what I should do to breastfeed my infant. Seriously, screw off, you know nothing. I’ll take the WTE book any day!

Ahem. As for Cami being remotely credible as a preggo chick? Not likely. She’s an ok actress, but not amazing. I can’t see her pulling it off. Also, if I had those legs, I just might wear skirts that short, too.

  43. JenJen says:

I don’t want to read about it, see or know it. I used to love her. She looks like Hell now and says she gets better with age? All that time alone taught her nothing to end up with a sleazebag playa.

  44. SamiHami says:

Sure, women who haven’t given birth can play a pregnant woman in a movie. But only if she is a reasonably good actress. Cami is definitely NOT a good actress-I still don’t get her popularity. She looks awful and her acting is even worse.

  45. kazoo says:

see, this is why oversharing actors need to rethink what they tell people. when you know too much about actor’s personal life and thoughts, it removes your ability to see them as an actual character in any role.

@zelda, lmao. please, never leave this site. you make me laugh daily. 🙂
