Mel Gibson leaves Jodie Foster high and dry at Cannes photocall

The Cannes International Film Festival rages on with the The Beaver photocall, for which director and actress Jodie Foster was front and present but her co-star, Mel Gibson, was quite notably absent in spite of the fact that he was reportedly expected to attend. Surely, Jodie is fine with the fact that Mel was not present at the photocall because, no matter what, she’ll always love that man for the rest of her life even though he’s left her to deal with this mess all by herself.

Obviously, I have to wonder whether the woman even has a grasp on reality any longer. Not only does Jodie have poor taste in male associates, but she dared to describe the lower percentage of female directors as “race psychology,” yet she herself (despite being a woman) convinced a studio to give her $20 million of funding to make a movie about a guy who talks through a puppet. Indeed, the film has already received a U.S. limited release, for which it only brought in a measly $104,000 from 22 theaters. So it seems that Mel’s recent extensive, self-piting interview didn’t help sell tickets, and he’s sitting this one out like a pouting child:

Mel Gibson’s absence from the press conference supporting his new film did not stop him dominating proceedings.

The actor plays a depressed businessman who uses a beaver hand puppet to communicate in The Beaver, which is directed by his co-star Jodie Foster who attended the press conference in Cannes.

The actress, who has been friends with Gibson since they starred in the 1994 western Maverick, faced a barrage of questions about the actor who has been accused of racism, homophobia and anti-semitism and appeared in court this year on a battery charge after a complaint from ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

But she insisted the troubled star, who is due in Cannes today to appear at tonight’s screening of the film, “was the right actor for the role” and had “a deep understanding of the struggles” faced by the character.

She said: “He really understood the character in a way that was extraordinary. I think that he was willing to go to such a deep place and willing to expose himself in some ways, to really talk about something he knows a lot about which is struggle, wanting to change, wanting to transform yourself, not wanting to be who you are and I’m so grateful for that performance”.

Asked if the film would help rehabilitate him in the eyes of the public and in Hollywood, she said: “I don’t know, I have no idea.”

Foster added: “Anything that you do that you obsess about and think about and give that much to for six months of your life in his case… allows you to look deeper at yourself and the people around you and the effect of what you do and has to have some kind of therapeutic, cathartic end.

“I know that he is incredibly proud of the movie and I think that he is proud of what he’s shown and I think he wants people to see that side of him and he’s an incredibly private man so what he shows on screen is deep as you could possibly get”.

[From The Independent]

Perhaps Jodie and Mel talked this over beforehand and decided it would be best for him not to attend and distract from the topic at hand. However, it’s pretty clear that Mel distracts from The Beaver whether or not he’s actually present; so if he is truly so “incredibly proud” of this movie, the very least he could have done is to establish a presence and show some support for his unyieldingly loyal friend, co-star, and director. What a douche move, but there’s a slim chance that he might actually show up for the premiere itself. Admittedly, Jodie wasn’t completely alone for the photocall and press conferences because Kyle Killen and Keith Redmon bothered to show up. Her co-star, however, is another matter altogether.

Meh, could have been worse than him not being there. he could have been there punching her in the head and telling her to suck his c@ck. Screw him, screw this stupid movie and god forgive me, screw jodie foster too.

  2. Whatever says:

Maybe it was planned that way. Just because it “was reported” that he’d be there doesn’t mean it is true. Half of what is reported is crap anyway. I can see him laying low and it’s a smarter way to handle it than Chris Brown and Charlie Sheen out there not caring one bit or seeming the least bit affected by their behavior.

  3. bored says:

I think it’s best that he’s not there.

  4. dorothy says:

Feel sorry for her in a way. She went all out to produce this movie and Gibson’s idiot actions destroyed any hope of ticket sales.

However, the movies premise of a man talking through a beaver? Really, did that sound like a good script?

  5. thegreatdefender says:

Its very brave of her to carry on without the co star, she is a strong brave woman and a good friend to mel

  6. Eve says:

She’s smiling to keep from crying.

  7. BG says:

She is looking good. Her face isn’t streched like that of other actresses 10 younger than her.

  8. BG says:

I meant “10 years younger” than her.

  9. Freestyle says:

It’s likely he didn’t show up in order to give Jodie her moment in the sun and not to distract from that. Since the tapes hit the media, all talk of this movie has been about him when it is in reality Jodie’s movie. It’s rumored he will appear later tonight.

  10. Solveig says:

He is expected for the evening red carpet.
Penn wasn’t there fot the photocall, thus I don’t see why it is such a big deal if Gibson was not there and I don’t understand the need to question his friendship to Jodie.
Plot sounds stupid, but who knows, maybe it’s better than it sounds.

  11. EdithP says:

Not the photos I was expected from a beaver photoshoot.

Has anyone heard how the movie was received in Cannes?

  12. Freestyle says:

The movie was well received at Cannes according to Reuters news service. Lots of applause.

  13. EdithP says:

Thanks Freestyle. While Mel certainly has some disgusting personality traits, I do think he’s a good actor. I won’t pay to see The Beaver but I’d watch it when it comes to cable.

  14. Dorothy#1 says:

She is crazy, but she looks great! I hope she comes to her senses soon because I really like her!

  15. Kat says:

I love that Jodie looks younger than Lindsay Lohan.

  16. FakeJohnLocke says:

Don’t see the big deal here. Mel Gibson has a lot of problems – old news. Jodie Foster is loyal to him – old news. The movie is a risky, “art film” that is not going to make a lot of $ – no news. Mel is not goofing around on the red carpet because his life is in the sh*tter and he doesn’t feel like answering stupid questions from E reporters – got it. Mel can be both a messed up human being and good at his job. Jodie can be both an imperfect human being and good at her job. Like most of us. Again, not a lot of news here.

  17. Rhiley says:

I think Jodie Foster is a fantastic director. Dialogue drives the plots of her films, so they are not action packed pictures, but the characters she creates are very interesting. I think Robert Downey Jr.’s best work is in Home for the Holidays, and if he had starred in The Beaver, I would definately want to see it. But I cannot stand the sight of Mel Gibson, and I am a little disappointed in Jodie Foster’s defending him so relentlessly. He is disgusting and nothing she says can change that. I want to continue to like Foster and her work, but it is getting hard to do. I feel like she must tell herself that because she is an academic and an extrememly logical person that her feelings are correct while everybody else who is creeped out by Gibson is wrong. I can’t buy it, though. Mel Gibson is an abusive, self absorb, racist, xenophobe and no matter how much Jodie Foster tries to rationalize his behavior, I will never see him any differently.

  18. Freestyle says:

@EdithP – I saw the movie and loved it. I’m glad Jodie Foster is getting the recognition she deserves for her film. It’s unfortunate it was overshadowed by Oksana Grigorieva and her extortion plot.

  19. Lisa Turtle says:

    Meh,

I think Jodie approved of Mel’s absence. I think she knows what a shitstorm Me’s presence would have caused. Cannes is a hotbed of eurotrash press right now. Mel has a history of reacting negatively to intense questioning & aggressive photographers. Cannes is not the place for Mel to make his first red carpet appearance since the Oksana debacle. European journalists who hold no bars in asking personal questions would not have gone easy on old Mel.

  20. original kate says:

of course he didn’t show up – he’s a total pussy.

  21. MJ says:

This movie actually looks interesting. Jodie Foster looks amazing – she obviously understands the power of sunscreen.

  22. Freestyle says:

Picture of Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson on the red carpet in Cannes:

  23. Freestyle says:

According to recent tweets Foster and Gibson were just seated to a standing ovation in Cannes.

  24. Betsy says:

    FakeJohnLocke – Well said!

I think Mel (whatever else he may be) has been a good and loyal friend to Jodie Foster, who has been through some tough times herself. (John Hinckley Jr.) I admire Jodie for not abandoning Mel.

  25. kira says:

I really think Mel Gibson pretty much torpedoed her career along with his own. By supporting him, Foster has lost a lot of respect. It’s sad all around.

  26. Solveig says:

Here’s the red carpet. As I said, Mel is there.
    http://trovacinema.repubblica.it/multimedia/copertina/e-alla-fine-arriva-mel-gibson/29643913/1/1?speciale=cannes2011&ref=HREC2-13

I sort of feel sorry for this man, he is talented but has ruined his life with his own hands. He must consider himself lucky for having such loyal friends.

  27. melissa says:

I have that dress. I got it at Kohl’s. LOL

  28. sandy says:

i like jodie, she’s smart and a great actress, she looks great, she is a loyal friend, i respect that, i hope her movie is received well, good luck to her.

  29. carrie says:

i like her and i respect her:she’s faithful to her friends , she was ok with Mel about no photo call or press and Gibson did red carpet with Foster and many journalists liked the movie(on Twitter)

i don’t care about some people say on Foster:she’s more honest than Brangelina yesterday

  30. ZenB says:

It looks like Mel made it to France. I just saw something in my Twitter inbox. I eagerly await pictures and commentary. Yes, I come here for my fellow b!tches more so than the gossip!

  31. ZenB says:

I can’t believe I saw “I kind of feel sorry for Mel.” I think he made his bed but I think it’s ironic he lost his reputation over Oksana.

I don’t really know what to think about Oksana. I’m a “raised Catholic” My mom was ~40 when I was born. I’m an only child. I take my mom to church for Easter and Christmas, since she can’t get around as easily anymore.

This Easter Oksana was at the local church. She was in the communion line. I didn’t know what to think. The rule is that you do not get communion without confession and repenting. No clue if she did. I didn’t. I have to walk up to make sure my mom doesn’t get trampled so I take communion. Oksana had little Lucia with her which is why I noticed. I was bored and looking at the people in line and Lucia was adorable. She saw me looking at her she smiled and looked sheepish, I smiled back. I felt kind sorry for her. I bet she knows everyone was judging. I (for once) was not. I’m too busy feeling judged at that place to judge anyone else (other than for bad shoes).

I couldn’t help wondering if her taking Lucia to church was a condition of her agreement with Mel or if she is Catholic or if she is an Easter Christmas Catholic. I’m nosy but I’m not quite nosy enough to sit thru Mass to see if she shows up again.

I will admit to be glad to see her because I felt less alone in that place… LOOK! GOD! ANOTHER SINNER. The time I went before I swear the priest threw extra holy water on me.

  32. jenna says:

She walked the red carpet with Mel Gibson looking fabulous and she’s handled the press for this difficult to promote movie with class and grace. And Cannes loved the film and it received a 10 minute standing ovation. I notice you and the media would prefer not to post that though. You’d rather post anything negative.

I fail to see your negativity towards her regarding her quote about female directors. Maybe you don’t understand she was talking about there being a low percentage of female directors directing MAINSTREAM feature films in the sense that it might go back to the psychology of the producer feeling more comfortable giving funding for a huge budget to a person that looks like them. Very interesting comment and not at all out of touch with reality. She’s a brilliant lady.

And again people don’t seem to realize she has said over and over again she does not defend or approve of his behavior. But the press would rather focus on her quotes where she is talking about her long friendship with him.

  33. Vesper says:

I find it disturbing that even after Mel has been convicted people are still trying to dissect Oksana, her motives, and her lifestyle. What does it matter?? Mel is an abusive male who assaulted and terrorized his ex-partner and threatened to burn down her house and bury her in the rose garden. The personality / lifestyle of the person who was abused shouldn’t be a factor.

It’s like going back in time to the 70’s when a woman had to answer questions in a court of law about her lifestyle just so the man who raped her could be convicted.

  34. Vesper says:

Forgot to mention, not only is Mel a racist, alcoholic, abusive bully and an overrated has-been actor, he is also a C O W A R D.

  35. Dingles says:

I admire her for her loyalty to Mel even when the entire world was/is trashing him. Yes he messed up, big time, and he absolutely deserves the ridicule he’s received. But, he’s also a human being who needs a friend. Everyone needs a friend. She stood up for him when no one else was…I’m sure she was aware that people would direct their vitriol at her as a result. She was probably aware it could even hurt her career, but she chose to stand with him anyway. I can’t knock that.

  36. Solveig says:

@ZenB, sorry, but I don’t understand the point of your comment.
I think that being sorry for a man like him is part of the huge range of sentiments a human being feels.
I really don’t know what to think about his behaviour, I know HW and gossip magazines make up loads of BS, so it’s not like I believe everything those sources claim. But it’s obvious that he is an abusive person, it’s obvious that he is nuts, it’s confirmed that he’s said terrible, disgusting anti-semitic things, but I wouldn’t dare to be too judgy towards a man, because everyone of us has its faults and God only knows that we can’t judge if we didn’t walk 20 miles in someone else’s shoes.
That being said, I’m not fascinated by stardom, I’m not an apologist, that means that I stay on the victim’s side.

Ps: the victims of course are Oksana and her little child.

  37. Vesper says:

For everyone who keeps commenting on Jodie’s loyalty, wasn’t the movie already made before Mel’s rants / audio clips came out? If so, what else is she going to do but offer support to the actor she chose for the role. I wonder if he would have been choosen for the role AFTER the audio ciips came out. It will be interesting to see how loyal Jodie truly is when she is making or directing her next few movies? Kind of an “actions speak louder” thing.

@ Dingles – Everybody needs a friend?? Really? Perhaps, Mel can make friends in a Group Therapy for Abusers session. He will have lots of company. I don’t see too many people worried about support for Oksana.

  38. kasper says:

    Worst. Movie. Idea. Ever.

  39. Newbie says:

It’s her movie, so I hope it does well for her sake. I don’t agree with much that Gibson or his Grig(what? spelling?)orieva girlfriend have done over the past year, but I hope both of them get the help they need. Yikes. As crazy as Gibson is right now, he’s always been a talented actor. That’s about as much a pass as I’ll give him.

  40. harfang says:

From the “race psychology” interview: “When a producer hires a director, you’re hiring away your control completely. You’re bringing on somebody that will change everything. When you give that amount of power up, you want them to look like you and talk like you and think like you and it’s scary when they don’t, because what’s gonna happen?” She is not saying this is a good or even okay phenomenon; she’s explaining how she sees it playing out. Same with the assertion that rich honky females like her with the right power for it are selecting male directors because their gender makes them even more terrified of taking risks. This is the least stupid thing I have heard from her since the Beaver fiasco started.

*sigh* She looks so wonderful. And her complete (even if quixotic) confidence is such a breath of fresh air to me. Some of us in the real world are pining for you, oblivious elitist Jodie. Come back someday.

  41. emma says:

Mel will show up on Leno sooner or later.
