George Clooney plays a dad in new trailer for ‘The Descendants’

The trailer for George Clooney’s newest film, The Descendants, has arrived, and it’s rather reflective of the usual style of its director, Alexander Payne (Election; About Schmidt). Kaiser finds Payne to be an overrated director, and I’d tend to agree for the most part. I think Payne has an overall good message and is adept at critiquing society, but I’m not crazy about the “whimsical” way that his characters go about their journeys of self discovery. Perhaps it’s more of a quirky soundtrack thing that really bothers me, but whatever the case, I don’t rush to see Payne’s films, which are usually just variants of the same sad-yet-funny theme.

With The Descendants, Payne moves away from his midwestern comfort zone to relocate his characers to a Hawaiian setting. Like Schmidt (Jack Nicholson), Clooney’s character is yet another unexceptional American alienated from his surroundings, which in this case just happens to be his marriage and family. It’s rather difficult to discuss the film’s synopsis without revealing what look to be very pivotal plot details, but Clooney plays a father who must learn to take care of his two daughters after his wife ends up hospitalized after a boating accident. Naturally, there is an important, life-altering revelation that the trailer reveals in a pretty spoilerrific manner, so beware of watching it if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing. Also, Clooney cries.

Is anyone else thrown a bit by watching Clooney’s attempts to play a so-called “average guy” and, more importantly, a dad too? It’s a bit jarring and ultimately reveals that he’s on his own journey of self-discovery that just happens to lead to an Oscar nomination. Funny how A-list actors have all kinds of money and power at their disposal, but they get hung up on winning those silly gold statuettes, right? In other words, welcome back, Indie Clooney.

I just can’t buy him as a dad, he probably will get an oscar nod just because he’s George Clooney.

  2. the original bellaluna says:

It actually looks like something I want to see – but I’m a sucker for Clooney as a deeply flawed parent, because aren’t we all? (I loved Michael Clayton!) And did my ears deceive me, or was that Jeff Bridges? *swoon*

  3. mln76 says:

I love Sideways and Election but I was too scared of Kathy Bates and the hot tub scene to watch About Schmidt but yeah I am not buying Clooney as a dad.

  4. vanessa says:

George Clooney has aged so well. He was hot, hot on Roseanne and now he’s a very good looking older man, like Rhett Butler-esque 😀

  5. Kaboom says:

    It was Beau Bridges, actually

  6. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Looks pretty good to me. I don’t find anything jarring about it. In Up In The Air he played a pretty regular guy. It will be interesting seeing him play a dad because I can’t recall a film where he has. I don’t think George is going indie just to win an award. I can tell when an actor is but I don’t get that vibe from George especially after seeing Up In The Air.

  7. Nanz says:

Make up artist should get an Oscar for successfully making Clooney look so AVERAGE. It kind of tears at my soul to see him this way. The movie looks good to me.

  8. Racheal says:

My daughter goes to school with the younger girl. She’s very nice, and has done a lot of local theater. Scouts liked her, and she was lucky enough to be cast as his daughter. Apparently he was great with her.

  9. Lucy says:

@Love Angelina: If I recall well, he was a dad in Michael Clayton. The cute little boy who played his son showed up in 2 or 3 scenes, I think… It’s just that his relationship with his son was not that relevant to the story.

I think The Descendants is going to be a good movie.

  10. junk573r says:

He plays a dad in One Fine Day.

  11. KateNonymous says:

Clooney played a dad in One Fine Day and was much more believable in that role than his co-star, Michelle Pfeiffer, was playing a mom.

  12. Lucy says:

#10 and #11: That’s true! I totally forgot about it. He was very believable as a dad in that movie, good call!

  13. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@ Lucy, I have never seen Micheal Clayton never had an urge to, and I think I didn’t like him at the time for some reason, but I believe he made a convincing father, he is very good actor. Loved Up In the Air. I swear to gwad that movie will make anyone a Clooney fan.

  14. Lucy says:

@Love Angelina: you gotta see it! It’s a really good movie!

  15. the original bellaluna says:

    @ Kaboom – I swoon for him too! 😀

  16. really says:

Clooney is a rather classic actor!

  17. Solveig says:

I’m buying him as a dad, probably because he’s good on looking like a totally uncapable dad.
Here he reminds me of someone, but I don’t know who he reminds me of and for that reason I’m sure I’m going to spend some time watching over and over this trailer just to realize who this person may be. S*it!

  18. original kate says:

why is clooney incapable of portraying a father, because he has no children? then i guess jon hamm shouldn’t be playing a father of 3 on “mad men” etc. i guess we should only have parents play parents, and bus drivers should play bus drivers and teachers should play teachers and spies should play spies and on and on.

    stupid.

  19. Lucy says:

    @original Katie: well said!!!

I will buy him as a father, I will sell him as a father, I will borrow him to be the father of my kid I don’t have (ha!), I will “hire” him to be a father (Oi Elisabetta!)

  20. observer says:

He’s totally believable as a father. I agree that it’s stupid to think he should have kids in order to be a father. Lots of actors and actresses have played parents before they became parents in real life. Also, he has a niece and nephew in real life with whom I’m sure he’s very close, and that would have given him some real life experience from which to draw.

  21. spotchecker says:

    @ 19 Lucy

    sounds like a plan. win.

  22. liv says:

he also played a dad in “one fine day”

  23. Aqua says:

I’d see it just to see him run around in his flip flops again.

  24. original kate says:

forgot to mention clooney has old-man arm in that first photo.

  25. Louise says:

I can’t stand his voice. It’s so monotone. It’s always been like that but it seems worse now.

  26. Camille says:

Have never cared for Clooney- as a person or as an actor (only thing I have ever really liked him in was Dusk till Dawn).
I don’t find him attractive either, his no-lipped face and ‘old man’ looking body do nothing for me.

I don’t buy him as a father, much as I don’t buy Aniston or Diaz as mothers. There is something to be said for an actor having a ton of various life experiences, it gives the actor a wider range and depth to draw from. Clooney in my humble opinion doesn’t have much range or depth- it has nothing to do with him having kids or not either BTW.

  27. rainstarr says:

@liv “One Fine Day” was so great! Easy film to watch again even if you know what happens. Great chemistry with Michelle Pfeiffer.

  28. Rachel says:

I will totally see this. Not only because I think it looks good in general, but because I have recently had to give up my MASSIVE George Clooney crush because he finally started to look TOO MUCH like my father and grandfather! (There is some facial resemblance, but even more, the physical and vocal mannerisms are similar). I have always thought he was a pretty good actor, and because of the familial resemblance, I totally buy him as a dad. I also think it’s a smart career move; he can’t play the pretty boy much/any longer.

  29. Lucy says:

@Aqua; It was quite funny seeing him running in his flipflops, isn’t it? haha

@spotchecker: That was me just being silly and enthusiastic about the movie, ;).

  30. There is perceptibly a bunch to identify about this. I consider you made some nice points in features also. Could you update me with your next post please?

  31. This is a great write-up. I am a blog author myself and this is very supreme information. Maybe you can give me some tips sometime as a writer? Thanks and keep up the excellent work. Send me an email:)
