Is Cheryl Cole coming back to America for ‘The X Factor’?

wenn3339604

Ugh, poor Cheryl Cole. It feels weird to feel such sympathy for a woman who by most accounts is just some talentless pop star and famewhore, but here I go again. Anyway, as you might remember, Cheryl was really trying to “happen” in America and Simon Cowell had given her a place at the judges’ table on the new American version of The X Factor. Cheryl has been a judge on the British version for a while, and that gig has made her very famous and very rich and beloved by many British girls (and boys). Then, a few weeks ago, Cheryl was dumped from the show. The reasons given were stuff like “her accent is too much for Americans” and “Paula Abdul hates her.” Cheryl flew back to England, rejected an offer to come back to The X Factor UK, and was said to be distraught and “in hiding.” Now, however, things seem to be looking up? She might be coming back to America:

Sources at “X Factor” tell TMZ … FOX and Fremantle (the producers of the show) are trying to get Cheryl Cole back on the program, a week after giving her her walking papers … but it’s more about the bottom line than about loving Cheryl.

Our sources say when producers told Cheryl she wasnt right for the U.S. version of “X Factor,” they tried to put her on the UK version of the show. Cheryl’s managers wanted £2.5 million and producers thought it was too much, so the deal went south.

We’re told Cheryl was due to get paid around $1.5 million for the U.S. show — about what Paula Abdul and LA Reid are making — but she has not decided whether to accept and come back. The whole situation becomes even messier when you take into account Nicole Scherzinger — who was originally hired as a host, but moved to being a judge when Cheryl was axed.

Our sources say Cheryl’s deal with the U.S version is “pay or play” — meaning she gets paid whether she does the show or not. We’re told execs at FOX — and especially at Fremantle — dont want to lose the money … so it’s better to have her on the show than not.

[From TMZ]

I still think that’s kind of insulting, right? It’s not like anyone but Simon Cowell really WANTS Cheryl back on the show, they just want her to come back because they don’t want to have to pay Nicole What sit a bigger paycheck at the last minute. The British tabloids have even more details about what’s gone down – The Sun reports that Cheryl is expected to join Cowell this Wednesday in New Jersey, for the NJ tryouts. Of course, The Sun also claims that there’s been “an outcry from fans of the Girls Alound singer”… in America? We still don’t know who she is! Anyway, it’s looking more and more like Simon Cowell is behind Cheryl’s triumphant return, which just shows that Simon actually does have SOME loyalty to his friends. A source tells The Sun, “This is the biggest surprise of the lot – Cheryl is back. Who could have possibly predicted this? It appeared that Simon had dumped Cheryl for good. But behind the scenes Simon has been wooing Cheryl. Key executives at Fox realized they had made a big mistake. They have been watching the tapes of her at the American auditions and realized she could be a huge star over there.”

Hm… it sounds like it’s mostly about money, actually. They’re probably already over-budget and Cheryl’s already been paid. Why not?

This is kinda looking like one big publicity stunt, isn’t it?

  2. mln76 says:

I agree with DGO we now know who this girl is kinda sorta only because of these shennanigans…Sounds just like all the B.S. they always pulled on Idol to get people buzzing about it during the haitus.

  3. Lisa says:

X factor is notorious for these kinds of publicity stunts. Simon has the media and the world eating out of his palm. He’s a very clever man

  4. uknowuloveme says:

    who effing cares?

  5. lizzy says:

@DGO – I completely agree. This whole drama seems the best way to garner attention for her, and minimize the possible criticism for her accent. The wronged woman card does wonders for careers these days.

  6. yve says:

Total publicity stunt they did this on British x factor with one of the judges a couple of years ago sacked him and brought him back after a week.

  7. gabs says:

I say they should give her a shot. If she sucks then just dont hire her for season 2. Yeah, shes pretty talentless and I dont think that her “singing” career will take off in the US but she could definitely become a high profile tv personalty and get some endorsements/ads(covergirl,loreal) like jlo got with AI. Theres money in that kind of “celebrity” stuff. Maybe a famous hollywood bf (ex J.Timberlake)can help her.

  8. Bit of Nonsense from London says:

Simon created her and keeps attempting to manipulate the public to love his creation. The British public have tired of her so he’s working on getting the US interested. Please don’t give her anymore airtime, Kaiser! There are a lot more talented and interesting people out there who we’d like to hear about.

  9. Ria says:

you seriously do not even *consider* this was all a plan to boost US X Factor popularity? seriously? SERIOUSLY? because it so was. *who* cared about the show before this? and now? it’s been a *great* publicity stunt.

  10. Mimi says:

The Brits are so boring and lacking charisma.

Seriously, there is no comparison as to their TV and film “stars.

They have ordinary people who are very plain and boring considered TV stars.

While Simon Cowell is indeed interesting, his judgement is dustorted when it comes to his fellow countrymen.

  11. flutters says:

I understand what people are saying about this being a publicity stunt. But…doesn’t it just make US X Factor look like a trainwreck? All this behind the scenes drama over the involvement of a person people in the US don’t really know. It may be in the blogs and news but I think your average Janes and Joes are shrugging their shoulders and thinking Idol was a big success without Simon and The Voice has a way cooler group of celeb judges than X Factor.

I know some people think all publicity is good publicity but I don’t think this drama helps X Factor even if the X Factor people think it helps X Factor. I assume they’ll have something dramatic happen whenever the auditions resume but why would people care?

  12. Julie says:

If this was a publicity stunt, Cowell might have overplayed his hand. People do not like being hoodwinked like sheep and will most probably boycot the show – Cowell and his shows are now reeking of DUPLICITY!

  13. Crash2GO2 says:

Wow. I think the publicity stunt theorists are right on here!

  14. Mimi says:

    re: “publicity stunt”

It sounds like one, but nobody knows who this girl is and no one cares if she is on the show or not.

I am assuming Simon thinks that she is more than a complete unknown because perhaps in England she is known for something, but who cares?

  15. brin says:

    Yeah, definitely a publicity stunt….ridiculous.

  16. duh says:

I don’t think it was a publicly stunt. People who wanted to watch the show before are going to watch it anyway and those who didn’t care, won’t watch it no matter how hyped is the show. The show has its fans: those who love singing competitions, fans of Simon and Paula. The fact that they sacked a judge and then took her back is rather off-putting than a great advertising. I believe it’s really the money they don’t want to lose. If they have to pay Cheryl anyway, they’d rather see her work and not relax at home.

  17. Darlene says:

am I looking at her nipple in the second photo? (the one with the orange…)

  18. Holly:) says:

If they wasn’t offering her the amount they are she probably wouldn’t even consider going back until they boosted the wage, its all about the amount of money to the majority of celebrities these days..

  19. bluhare says:

    @Mimi: Please . . . do go on.

  20. Lila says:

GO. AWAY. If Cowell had any sense at all he would have asked Jennifer Hudson to sit in the judge’s chair. I can’t think of a better example for what a show like that can do for an unknown and unlikely looking talent that defied all odds in the end.

  21. Louise says:

I don’t believe this story. Cheryl is only being paid $1.5 million for one year. That’s chump change considering that the show is expected to be a huge hit. Even if it has half the audience it’s expected too it’s still not that much money. Also I would be too offended to go back, especially when it’s clear nobody wants me there or supports me. I also don’t buy this as a publicity stunt. This is bad publicity. It would turn more people off then on. Also unless Nicole was in on this, she could cause problems since she was given the judge’s job.

  22. searching4grace says:

    @Darlene, that’s exactly what I thought. Ugh.

I wasn’t going to watch this show before, definitely not going to watch it now.

  23. Phil says:

Hey it’s the second coming of WHO GIVES A FUCK?! Michael K’s words, not mine. 🙂

  24. Jen34 says:

    @ Darlene

Her areola is showing in both photos. She is a lovely girl, though. She kind of reminds me of a southern Miss America type.

  25. ZenB!tch says:

I won’t be watching X-Factor. I could never abide AI and how will this be different? Still, I’d rather watch this girl than Nicole Whatsit.

  26. zesty says:

Man, does she wear a lot of makeup. She probably looks like a completely different person underneath all that stuff.

  27. Kimble says:

@ Mimi – Really? Just call foul every time Kaiser features a Brit in Hot Dong Friday …

Considering we’re just a little dot in comparison to the US, we do produce good music, film and men!!

Cheryl Cole does not count …

  28. Mia says:

    I’m trying to give a fuck. Umm…nope. Still don’t.

  29. jover says:

Has anyone listened to the “music” Girls Aloud put out; I haven’t but I can’t imagine that they were anything other than Spice Girl wannabees. While I find this girl deficit in beauty, brains, class, and talent, with the Snookification of pop culture, she could become a hit here in spite of herself.

  30. HannahG says:

    Farce, farce, farce.

That girl hasn’t once gone through an airport without a crapload of photos being taken of her. Why did she the last time?

Because it was all part of their game. I didn’t like that there wasn’t one official comment. And I knew audition with judges again weren’t until June 8th…

Pulling mickey out of public? Gross.

  31. CandyKay says:

One of the other gossip websites is reporting that a US tabloid was about to run an article about the UK incident in which Cheryl Cole assaulted an African bathroom attendant and used racial slurs.

According to the site, the producers are worried that once this gets out the new show will get off to a very bad start among the crucial African-American audience…12% of the US population, according to the new census.

  32. The Truth Fairy says:

“Our sources say Cheryl’s deal with the U.S version is “pay or play” — meaning she gets paid whether she does the show or not. We’re told execs at FOX — and especially at Fremantle — dont want to lose the money … so it’s better to have her on the show than not.”

SO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THE EXECS CUT HER WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT WAS IN HER CONTRACT, OR KNEW BUT HADN’T CONSIDERED THAT IT WOULD BE BAD BUSINESS TO PAY SOMEONE TO NOT WORK?? PLEASE! This doesn’t sound right at all.

In any case she should tell them to bugger off.

  33. matt says:

Mimi is so boring and lacking charisma.

Total publicity stunt. They do this kind of behind the scenes horseshit all the time on the UK version too.

  34. kg says:

Yeah – this sounds like a publicity stunt…I am not sure why we even need yet another one of these talent shows.

  35. Ell says:

Just as I thought, the usual Cowell move. I’m sure him and his publist, the lovely Mr. Max Clifford cooked this up from the start. A perfect way to endear ‘poor’ Cheryl to the US audience.

  36. TeeTee says:

TMZ is reporting today that the deal fell through and she will NOT return..
