Nip/Tuck star blames Christopher Reeve for his horseriding accident

Clueless “Nip/Tuck” star Kelly Carlson places the blame on Christopher Reeve for the horseriding accident that left him paralyzed. She could have left the beloved recently departed actor out of her lecture on how to best ride a horse, but instead she decided to bring him up, knowing she would invite controversy and publicity:

OK, this is going to offend people,” Carlson told Steppin Out’s Chaunce Hayden. “I love Christopher Reeve . . . But it was more his fault. When you’re jumping a horse, 99.9 per cent of the time it’s your fault . . . You never take a horse over a fence unless your horse is totally trained to do it, and you have a relationship with the horse. It’s all about trust . . . You have to have your hip bone and heel bone in a straight line up and down. If you don’t, you’ll go over the horse’s head . . . Chris probably wasn’t sitting right in the saddle. That’s the only reason why you fall off.” Reeve died two years ago of complications from being paralyzed from the neck down. His wife, Dana, a non-smoker, died last year of lung cancer.

Just because you know horses doesn’t mean that Christopher Reeve had it coming! The best drivers get in accidents, and any number of things can go wrong. What a stupid, arrogant thing to say. She didn’t just say he probably did something wrong, she went and explained his mistake in detail as if she was there and saw it all. Even on the off chance that she’s right there’s no reason to bring it up and what good does it do! I hope this woman’s career completely tanks now. Now that it’s on Page Six, you know that she’s going to release a rambling statement completely backtracking on everything she said and claiming it was taken out of context.

Christopher Reeve and his wife Dana, who worked tirelessly for his charity until her death, are both departed. They leave behind a teenage son who is said to be under Robin Williams’ guardianship. (I hope he’s ok now that Williams is in rehab.)

  1. Holy shit! What an arrogant thing to say. She sure assumes a lot and makes statements like he “probably” was sitting wrong. Look, with a guy like Reeve, who is essentially a national hero for simply being a good guy, you take that .1% chance she mentions and you ASSUME that it was the horse’s fault – if only for posterity and if only to think nice thoughts about the man!

    Damn.

I’ve never watched Nip/Tuck. Is she this callous on the show? Maybe she’s method acting.

I promise you this – I’m a much more sensitive celebrity than Carlson. I even sat my son down and talked to him about how it wasn’t the Croc Hunter’s fault that he got stabbed in the chest by the bayonet end of a giant fish. Justice (my son) was still quite upset by the whole thing. Who isn’t?

What a low life, what is w/ the horrific middleage hair style! She’ll never have the class or success of Christpoper and Dana.

  3. lelo says:

Here bad boob job will hopefully cause her to fall off of her horse and smash her face.

  4. Josiegrl says:

Apparently she’s not getting enough publicity. I wonder if celebs were like this in the 1940’s? Did they have more class then or was it that they just weren’t as accessible as they all are to us today.

  5. Josh says:

Oh please… I love how even the original leaves out the question leading to the comment. How about something like.. oh… “So Kelly, I understand you ride horses and even jump. Don’t you think that’s too dangerous in light of Reeve’s paralysis and eventual death?” ?? Perhaps with a little more blame put on the horse in the question. Kelly wasn’t saying Reeve had it coming… but he didn’t have to get on that horse either. Driving a car is one thing, jumping a horse is like taking a curvy road at high speed… screw up, and you’re in big trouble. It’s not the car’s fault, either.

  6. marines all the way says:

Celeb I’ve got the video of CR falling off would you like me to send you the clip? maybe them ppl can get a better prospect.

  7. Jaymee says:

She must be part horse, look at that arm hair. Neeeeeeh!

  8. alex says:

Whataver. Who the hell is she anyways? What right does she have to blame him? She wasn’t there, she’s not a horse expert and she’s not even famous. I know I’ve never heard of her. She really should’ve kept her mouth shut.

  9. Angelika says:

What the hell does she think she is? God.. I watch Nip/Tuck regularly and she plays a stupid bitch and probably is one in real life as well. She doesn’t have a big role and she won’t land too many in the future either..

  10. Not a fan says:

well lets be honest, if Christopher Reeve didn’t get on the horse in the first place, he wouldn’t have fallen.

  11. Angelika says:

Well, then we should all never ride horses again, drive cars or get into planes..

  12. Celebitchy says:

Not a fan, that’s a good point! Marines I don’t really want to see it, thanks. I did see Christopher Reeve in person after his accident. He was at the Air and Space Museum in Washington in Fall, 2003. He was smiling a lot and looked really happy. When we left I was telling everyone in line “Christopher Reeve’s in there!”

  13. Celebitchy says:

    Ipek,
I hope you didn’t write that. The piece itself is really ignorant. (Not the writer/you, just the writing.) I didn’t embrace health causes either until I got terribly ill. Hopefully it’s just mean-spirited satire, but even so it’s in terrible taste.

  14. Ipek says:

No, i didnt write that. I don’t take any of his writing seriously, it’s just dark humor. And I’m sorry about your illness.

  15. Rich says:

My dad has been in a chair for 31 years, and it was his fault and has been on the Federal payroll since, (disability). He was in a car and was liquored up and hit a tree. Reeve was on a horse in a jumping event…there is risk…he feel and that was that. His foundation did nothing for my dad nor did he expect it to. Reeve made a mistake and sometimes there is a tought learning curve in life. The fact that she brought it up and you people love him…doesnt change the fact that she is right. All she did was call a spade a spade and that is it.

  16. Celebitchy says:

Rich how is she right? I mean, do we know that he was not sitting right on the saddle and that’s why he fell? Statistically she could be right, but I want to know how she is right in this case. Do you have evidence that Reeve was sitting incorrecly in his saddle or that he somehow spooked the horse? Did anyone say anything to that effect that wasn’t just speculation?

This is a little personal for me because sometimes I need a wheelchair and I know what it’s like to be in one. Blaming someone in a chair for their problem is f’ing weak, in my opinion. It also helps people feel distant from the person in the chair, like “oh, it was their fault, that could never happen to me.” Because people who can’t deal with it either stare or look away and you can see on their face that they don’t want to think about it.

Even if someone had an accident or whatever, even if your dad was drunk and driving, it’s not right to blame the person and it does nothing to address the problem.

Tough learning curve?! Life is random. Some people get screwed and some get lucky. Of course people are successful or miserable based on their outlook and the amount of work they do, but you can’t discount random accidents. Neither Reeve or your dad “had it coming.”

Thank you for listening to my rant.

  17. Angelika says:

Very well said, Celebitchy. Nothing left to say about that.

  18. bitch says:

its his fault. Dont do dumb things on big beautiful animals. duh. treat them with respect and you wont end up like christopher. (tear)

  19. b.i.t.c.h. says:

    its HER* fault.

  20. Slighter says:

Sorry, but had to comment. I’m a riding instructor and that is the biggest load of BS I’ve heard (at least recently). The theory (heel in line with the hip) would do little to nothing to prevent most types of fall (it’s also pretty outdated). There is no absolute ‘safety zone’ while horse riding but most falls cause no injury or very minor ones. Mr Reeve was just very very unlucky, and to suggest otherwise is misguided and ignorant. If she were right, then the top tier professionals would have found her magic method of staying on and would never fall off, which they do from time to time. Don’t believe me? Watch a top level three day event and count the falls. Three or four people will normally come off, and almost all of the time they’re uninjured. Falls that cause massive injury are very rare, but falling off happens from time to time. She was so wrong I’m angry as hell that someone who clearly knows only a little about the subject would dare to comment that arrogantly about something that ruined a mans life.
Nerd attack over, please continue with your day.
