Duchess Kate’s Canadian style tour continues: cute or boring?

wenn3422383

Above is a photo from the protests outside of an event in Montreal, where Duchess Kate and Prince William were doing some kind of royal visit to a hospital. It’s just a reminder, for those of you who think I’m too harsh on Kate – I’m really not that harsh. I do like the girl, but I just think she’s ripe for some gentle teasing. I would never stand outside of one of her events with a sign that said “PARASITE” though.

Anyway, on to the fashion! For Canada day, Kate wore Reiss, a British designer, and an outfit she had recycled and repurposed. Kate wore this dress, “The Nannette” last year for her engagement portraits by Mario Testino. In those photos, I didn’t really notice the odd boob-ruffle, though. It’s cute, but I kind of wish the whole ensemble wasn’t so matchy-matchy with the red accents. Red maple leaf hat (by Sylvia Fletcher at Lock & Co.), red pumps, red Anya Hindmarch clutch. It’s nice seeing Kate more away from her usual blues and whites, though. Red looks nice on her. Also: her maple leaf brooch is the Queen’s.

Next up: Kate in a grey dress (with some kind of bluish-green undertone) by Catherine Walker, a favorite of Princess Diana. The dress is called “The Kensington” – Princess Diana lived at Kensington Palace. This is Kate trying to look solemn, because she and William were visiting the Canadian War Museum. Kate and William also got to plant a tree (an Eastern Hemlock…?) symbolizing their love, and I don’t mind telling you, Waity did NOT know what to do with a shovel. She’s all “Er… what?”

There were other costume changes and events, but unfortunately, we don’t have those photos. If you go here, you can see William in a chef’s jacket, though. I have to admit something – I’m surprised that the royal tour so far hasn’t gotten more attention. I guess it’s because there have been no flubs, major or minor, but I also think it’s because neither William nor Kate are really that dynamic? Go on and hate me. While I think Kate is performing her royal duties with grace, the camera often catches her looking like she doesn’t really know what she’s doing. She’s not a “natural” at this, but she’s studying, and she’s trying, and good for her. I’m not bashing her for putting in the effort – although I will bash her for not paying attention to whatever task is at hand, and instead looking around for the photographers so she can turn her face to them. There are way too many shots of her looking in the complete different direction than everyone else – it’s not a coincidence. As for William, he’s been in the royal bubble so long, I get the feeling that he’s simply incapable of being spontaneous. It makes for a dedicated public servant, but not a terribly watchable one.

    She always looks amazing.

  2. Boo says:

I think she’s doing an outstanding job. Her red hat with the (Canadian) maple leaves was adorable, and the purple knit dress (not pictured here) was gorgeous on her–so wonderful to see her in some color! I’m just liking these two more and more.

  3. Beth says:

She’s wearing the red and white because those photos are from Canada day… obviously wanting to show her support and enthusiasm for the day by wearing all the colours of our flag.

  4. Alix says:

She’s probably looking around so much because she’s not used to being part of such huge gatherings — still trying to take it all in. Girlfriend’s gotta learn how to exit a car, though! Keep knees/feet together, swing both legs around, THEN step out of the car. Really, this is Princessing 101, and prevents inadvertent shots of the royal undies.

  5. Brittney says:

I LOVED the purple dress that’s not in the pictures here… but I loved her in the chef’s coat too. She looks amazing in anything.

  6. Anon says:

I completely disagree – this is huge news in Canada and the UK at least (and has the most accredited news persons of any royal tour at almost 1400 from all over the world – 80 of which are from the US). Wall to wall coverage on the major news stations and they are BOTH doing a great job at what they are there to do. There are plenty of photos and video of BOTH of them looking engaged with people or the event at hand and you must be trying to find the odd photo that gives the opposite idea. They are literally (especially her) being snapped hundreds of times per minute so of course there will be off shots – but those are few and far between. She’s also dressing very well to support the country (native designers) and the occasion. They look like they are really enjoying themselves, and their visit should help boost tourism to Canada given the pics that are being shown around the globe.

  7. dahlia1947 says:

Beth:She’s wearing the red and white because those photos are from Canada day… obviously wanting to show her support and enthusiasm for the day by wearing all the colours of our flag.

Exactly! and she looks cute holding that shovel! Not clueless at all! Just cute and giving them a big smile!

It looks like William makes her laugh alot and that’s nice.

  8. bluhare says:

She’s done really well. Looks great, appears to be a natural at the walkabout thing. They look like a team to me, and one where both participants get along and really like each other.

I think they’ve got staying power, I really do.

  9. Toe says:

She looks nice in the red dress, but she needs to stop losing more weight.

  10. Turtle Dove says:

I like the red and white outfit. Befitting the country she’s in. The little maple leaves on the hat are a nice touch too.

She does seem very studied in finding that camera, I’ll concede. I do think that Catherine is looking far too thin. Not a sexy look. I’m surprised that she hasn’t lobbed off that hair yet. Royals frown on the long hair, but I can see Catherine digging her heels in on that one.

  11. Chickadees4me says:

The parasite sign holder….. you do have the option of not living in a commonwealth country lol

I love Kate and think she’s charming & Wills too, she looks wonderful in Red & White 😀

I hope their marriage is a happy, wonderful one.

  12. You don't say says:

It is a big deal in Canada, so that is nice. Are women going back to wearing ugly pointed toe shoes? If you are going to be on your feet for any length of time, please wear something that will not be so damaging to your feet. Plus, pointed toe shoes make your feet look really big.

I like her clothes and really like the red and white outfit. It really stood out, but was pretty for the occasion. She is muted in tone and style, but seem appropriate for what she is doing and where she is, which is better than looking garish.

  13. brin says:

I think she’s doing great and the people, for the most part are excited to see them. For their first official trip, they are doing a fantastic job.

  14. Faye says:

Love the red and white! But I usually think she looks lovely.

  15. Gino says:

A bit on the skinny side. Her thighs are starting to frighten me, they’re half the width of her face. I understand she’s conscious of being watched and judged all the time but she’s got to eat something soon.

  16. anne_000 says:

i know it’s to show off the colors of the canadian flag, but i dont like the red (hat), white (dress), red (shoes) combo. also, i’d like her purse if it wasnt matched with this outfit.

the grey dress shows off her small waist very well, but i dont like the pointy-ness of the collars of the neck and sleeves.

also, why does she walk with her foot facing almost sideways? doesnt seem like an elegant way to walk.

  17. Pyewacket says:

This couple bores me and I do not find her clothes interesting or her looks beautiful.

People are so intent on making her bigger than Diana and all she will ever be is a poor facsimile.

  18. Hellen says:

The red and white outfit is an obligatory nod to Canada Day – I would have been surprised if she had NOT worn the national colors.

Gray dress is mega-boring, as is the blue dress she wore for the ship tour most recently. She’s playing it safe, and although she always looks great which is probably better than making some huge fashion errors – but the overall effect is a yawn.

  19. katnip says:

    @anne

ITAWY on all points.. I too hated that white dress red shoe combo. I would have much preferred she had worn a red/white (patterned) dress instead of that red hat/white dress/red shoe assemble.

She is lovely, not my idea of beautiful, but she has an innate grace and elegance about her.

I find them not that exciting but I get that there is need to make them this amazing couple.

    I do like them together.

  20. Lushus L. says:

That guy with the Parasite sign looks like a total goober!

  21. Turtle Dove says:

One thing that I really like, she’s recycling dresses a few times before she retires them. There’s an intelligent frugality there that I respect. I like fashion, but anyone who is a slave to trend surfing loses points with me (Jennifer Lopez, etc.).

  22. macey says:

Whats up with the Parasite sign? was that aimed at Kate & William or are they protesting something else?

I think Kate is always looking around b/c she is genuinely enjoying herself and wants to take it all in and not miss a thing. Almost like she wants to make the moment to last just a second longer.
I just adore these two. i cant believe how much I enjoy seeing pics of them and what she’s wearing even tho Im not really into fashion. She’s so refreshing compared to the scantily dressed poptarts that are usually all over the tabs.
I dont get why everyone is so hard on her. I think she’s doing a great job considering the pressure she must be under. Ive really come to love her for some reason.

  23. Tiffany says:

I wonder where they are in town today? They must have been at McGill? It’s kicking in Montreal right now, festivals, celebs, yachts-and Cirque.
Wonder if they will go tonight?

BTW, the restaurant that Rihanna and Drake were pap’d at is kinda funny. They are on a PR tour. That place, which is just up my street is completely open to the street, not a very private place. The most open place in town, but good food.

  24. Mia says:

@Pyewacket: ITA. They are dull as dishwater. She’ll never be Diana. Never. I will never look at Waity & think she’s more dynamic than Diana. It’s fruitless to try to do so.

I’m also a little tired of her in blue. I love blue/navy, but it’s just too much. Good lord, I know it’s her signature color, but switch it up.

  25. Sari says:

Sophisticated, elegant, and classy. I wish I had her wardrobe.

  26. DD says:

Parasite? Wow, that’s a tad harsh.

  27. Mia says:

Could “parasite” be referring to the fact that Canada is paying for this tour?

  28. Heebeegeebee says:

Macie ITAWY. I adore them both. He has so much character and a brilliant sense of humour. He is not dazzling, he is low key and a hard worker to boot. Kate is divine. If she was that into herself she would not have worn the maple leaf hat. But she did and it touched me deeply. And she is not matchy matchy, she is classic. They are both brilliant role models for our youth.

  29. LaCanadienne says:

“Parasite go Home” is meant to convey the displeasure Canadian taxpayers feel by having to pay for this visit (royalty is like a teenager in the basement – never leaves, empties the fridge, entitled to be there, etc).

The US portion of their trip is NOT being paid for by the US taxpayer .. this is reserved for us with the dubious pleasure of being a “Commonwealth Country” and having the monarchy the “head of state”.

In the alternative, Canada could become a republic (like France or the US) but given how successful that seems to be, we’ve mostly decided to stay a parliamentary system, so head of state being the queen … meh … good as anything else for most folks but some people do not want anything to do with even the idea of monarchy (which ya gotta admit is pretty “middle ages”).

By the way saying “July 1 is Canada’s independence day” is wholly inaccurate – Canada has never had an independence day, we never left the Commonwealth, and quite frankly if there ever is an independence day in Canada it would probably be Alberta’s Independence or Quebec’s independence from Canada … but I digress …

USA is fascinated by royalty and that is interesting given that US had an independence war and purposefully chose to not revere the monarchy, but here 200 + years afterwards are so revering monarchy … huh … funny that …

Kate is lovely – boring – but lovely – I would like to see difference cuts, shapes and forms. A fuller skirt, capri pants, empire waist, etc

Their cavalcade passed right in front of my door on their way to the Institut for their cooking lesson and I have to say their Montreal visit may have been short but the best pictures and video so far are of the cooking lesson, the cooks outfit they wore, the fun they clearly had with the class, it was perfect.

  30. mary simon says:

For someone who is new to all of this, I think she is doing great. Even if her fashion has to be subdued – she wears her clothes well and always looks very comfortable with herself. I like the way she and Wills always seem to be sharing a laugh. So far, so good.

  31. Dhavy says:

(yawn…)she’s a little boring but at least she’s not Fergie (boy that was a disaster).

I’m tired of everyone holding her up to the same standards as princess Diana, she’s not and she never will. Maybe it’s the thought of her just sitting and waiting to be asked to be married by the future king just because she felt it was an entitlement for putting up with him for years that annoys the crap out of me, as if she needed to prove to the rest of us commoners she was better than us by being picked. Nothing wrong with royalty marrying someone without a title, but she made it like a masterplan. Besides, being rich, not working and living off the family’s fortune is not too farfetch from royalty lifestyle.

Anyway, the grey dress is nice but she looks too thin…is she wearing pantyhose?

  32. mimi says:

YOu can tell that was what she waited for for almost a decade:
    To be famous for nothing.

    To have photographers around.

It seems ALL she does is look for the camera.
    She loves it.

I am not sure how can anyone say she is doing a good job or a bad job.

I am not sure what is her job.
How is she to do good at what?

Unless she is some sort of model and her “JOB” is to look for and find the photographers.

Someone can make a video game out of it.

In the game- you play Kate and yoy get points for noticing and finding where photographer are, and looking at their direction.

If you don’t get your photo taken- you lose points.

By the way, her outfits are fab.

  33. Len says:

I really don’t see why Kate cannot be as great as Diana. I think people are over-idolizing Diana. She was not that eloquent or particularly interesting. Yes, she was beautiful and did alot of charity, but let’s not get carried away by that glamour. Underneath it all she was a bit dull, whiny and not exceptionally talented.

  34. Pirouette says:

LaCanadienne, if the US is fascinated by a monarchical system, which I have never noticed, it might be because people there are not familiar with it. Further, if people in the US are “revering” the monarchy now, it is not the same reverence they chose to reject in the late 18th century. I have never heard someone in the US argue for the adoption of a monarchy there.

  35. Cynthia Roxane says:

They are both just perfect. William is a lucky man.

  36. Yasmine says:

The parasite comment is also from a Quebec Member of Parliament, Khadir, who last month said he’s against the monarchy because: “It’s a parasitic system that we inherited from ancient times.” AMEN!

    http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1000095–quebec-parliamentarian-calls-visiting-royals-parasites?bn=1

I am also a bit pissed off that the government is cutting social services, public sector jobs, and so on…while the tax payer has to take on paying for a state visit from these useless two.
Oh and finally, as usual, she bores me and is too matchy…. ZzZzZzZzZzZzZz

  37. pitd says:

I think her red hat is really cute 🙂 But she looks very tired.

  38. ZenB|tch says:

Kate is as young and hip as a princess can be. She’s lovely an appropriate. I wouldn’t wear it but it’s not hideous. I don’t like the hat. We dont do hats on this side of the Pond

  39. Miss Marie says:

Let’s hope for the best for this young couple. There are very few positive role models for young people these days. It is refreshing to see a very young set of people that are so gracious to all. The Royal family’s history is wrought with tragedy so keep these folks in your prayers. Let’ not rip her down about her clothes or makeup – she’s taking the high road. We should too…

  40. badrockandroll says:

Fashion-wise, there really were 2 Dianas: the one during the marriage, and the one that emerged after the divorce. The outfits that Diana wore on her first visits to Canada and Australia were absolute Fashion Nos: matchy missy prints, peplums and pleated skirts that blew with the air, matronly flats and twee hats. Really dreadful stuff. Her personal sense of style didn’t really develop until she got rid of the husband, the hose and the constraints of being a royal, and strapped on the stilettos.

Catherine has a good working uniform that seems right for all the diverse things that she has to do on a tour day. Her one miss is her hair: she’s going to have to bite the bullet and tie it back or chignon it up, because the parks and boats and public squares where she appears can be awfully windy.

But I think that her dynamic with people is quite animated: if you can find the pics of them in a Quebec youth home, you will see her being a magician’s assistant and William playing foozball, and they are really interacting well with their hosts.

For her first tour outside Britain, I would say that she has done much better than Diana did on hers, but then she’s older, more educated, and likely has had more support from her husband and from his family than Diana ever did.

  41. Minx2 says:

I like her white/red outfit for Canada Day but the gray dress is just drab. The dress she wore today, however, a blue number with lace (or embroidery, I’m not sure) on the top is just awful. I was stunned to see her in something so bad.

  42. Andie B says:

She always looks lovely, and is doing her best to learn the ropes as a Duchess. She has married into a conservative family, and always looks appropriately dressed. If she showed up somewhere with her boobs on display, her hair backcombed, and wearing 5 inch heels there would be an outcry I’m sure. Sadly, I’m starting to get a real Prince Edward vibe from William.

  43. lease says:

I’m usually all for the skinny look (sad but true, i’ve been brainwashed by the media i suppose)
but I really think Kate could gain 10 or 15lbs and look fabulous.
She’s beautiful and has great style, but she looks sick to me. Like, really sick.

  44. Ilovemee says:

Kate needs to hire Rihanna’s stylist STAT!

  45. gab says:

Her sense of style is dull and boring – just like her “job.”(read: life)

  46. Anon says:

@badrockandroll: So true about Diana and her two styles. People forget that she didn’t start out as a fashion plate at all. The thing about Kate is that her style might not be flashy, or too fashiony – because of her position – but it is classic, elegant, and clean lined. The best way I could sum it up is timeless – as in we won’t be looking back years from now at pics of her from this tour and cringing like we do with the early tour pics of Diana.

@Len: I couldn’t agree more with you about the over-idolization of Diana. While she certainly did a lot of good for the world, people again forget that she was quite manipulative with the press and could be quite self-centered and serving herself. Let’s give Kate some time to establish her own charitable interests (as we did Diana) before we bash her for not measuring up. Besides, Kate didn’t ask for the comparison.

  47. Boo says:

I read a really interesting article about Kate’s fashion choices being “diplomatic” rather than fashionista. They made the point that she wore the grey dress because it was in deference to what would have been Diana’s birthday–she decided to wear something very simple out of respect for her husband’s mother; she did not want to be calling attention to herself that day. I thought it was a good article…if anyone wants me to dig it up, I’ll try to do that!

  48. Devon says:

I find her hit and miss with her clothing choices but on the whole, I think she dresses very well. She knows what works for her body and sticks with it. I would like to see her in other colours than white, navy/blue and black. Greens, pinks, reds…they’d all look great on her.

  49. sooo says:

The idea that the Quebec protests are about the cost of the visit to the Canadian taxpayer are laughable. The people of Quebec do extremely well themselves from Canadian taxpayers (can you say federal transfer payments). The parasite comment comes from someone whose province is heavily subisdized by the rest of Canada and can’t get over the fact that New France fell to the British at the battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. It was decided 252 years ago and they need to get over it.

Oh, and Kate always looks amazing. I would love to have 1% of her gracious style and charm.

  50. NJMDPS says:

    She…..they….look great. Good job!

  51. eternalcanadian says:

So far the only outfit I have liked on Catherine was the purple dress from the Canada Day evening festivities. Everything else has been boring and too old-looking for Catherine. I would have liked to see her wearing trousers! We’ll see what she wears for the dragon boat race, in the Yukon at the bush lodge, and in Calgary.

William also could look better. Thus far he has looked just like his father in suits that are too hot for the kind of weather (which explains why he’s sweating and red-faced–nothing to do with embarrassment over the flailing mobs).

Well, they still have a few days yet, and then they’ll be in LA so maybe their outfits will spiff up. But they’re just so boring and conservative right now.

  52. guilty pleasures says:

    1) She always looks lovely and appropriate.
    2) She is the future queen and current royalty, nt a Kardashian or Hilton with a sex tape entree to fame.
    3) How in the H*LL do any of us know if she’s boring? We don’t know her one little bit!
    4) who are any of us to judge how long the two of them waited to get married? She’s not even 30, maybe she wanted to live a normal life for a little longer
    5) Diana was a simple person. No independent thought, really, for the first many years. Pretty, sure, a commoner, yes- and the reason we all identified with her-it could happen to us too!!!

Give them a break, don’t judge them by the trashy standards Americans have sunk to regarding who is fame worthy.

I say hats off, and good job so far.

  53. Crys says:

well, technically speaking the royals have no practical purpose. They’re merely figureheads.

  54. sandy says:

Kaiser, I don’t find you are harsh at all when it comes to Kate, you just make observations based on facts. Since she became the duchess, people in general seem to be obsessed with her. You cant even say something simple like, ‘i think she needs to stop playing with her hair’, without people going all loco moco. Diana was loved by masses because she showed despite being a princess she was human just like all of us with flaws and insecurities. She wasn’t afraid to talk about it or look less than perfect. With Kate it’s like she is trying too hard to look good and be perfect and playing pretend she has forgotten how to be normal. Sometimes she looks even smug in some pictures. I know it wouldn’t have been easy for her being William’s girlfriend and waiting for him to propose, but she hasn’t done anything yet to show people that she didn’t deserve the Waity Katie moniker. I mean if all it takes is a high street dress worn with panty hose, blow dry hair , inane smile to impress, then yes I am impressed. William is boring too, he has been doing this for so long, that he could probably do this in his sleep. that’s why people like Prince Harry because he is spontaneous.

  55. feebee says:

She seems to be doing all right considering she’s under much more scrutiny now.

Re the Diana comments @badrockadnroll, @len and @46, I understand what you mean but the fashion of the time wasn’t that inspiring, so it’s hard to blame it all on a fresh 20 year old hitting the world stage, trying not to upstage her husband let alone tower over him.

And yes she was manipulative with the press but that’s one of her interesting traits (for me!). She was up against the Palace machinery. All’s fair in love and war, and she was at war with them for a long period of time.

There’s no need for people to compare Catherine to Diana. She is not Diana II but Catherine I. Diana was a different time, a different world (in terms of technology etc) and will be eternally a youthful, vibrant 36 years old.

  56. theotherbird says:

    Une autre Canadienne:

Somebody was in my hometown (Ottawa, capital of Canada) last week, tying up the traffic. I was at home, wearing uncoordinated pyjama bottoms and an old t-shirt, drinking bevvies on my patio in the sunshine.

I think I had the nicer time of it, and didn’t cost my fellow citizens (who are facing job cuts everywhere and pension clawbacks too) a dime.

  57. Kloops says:

Super cute. Not totally solon the red shoes (a little too matchy-matchy) but everything else was well played. I especially liked the purple number with her hair tied back.

  58. jemshoes says:

My theory is that Kate and William will make A LOT of effort to eschew scandal and controversy – Kate’s not that kind of girl, it seems, and that’s probably why William finally decided to marry her. She’s young, pretty, subdued, obedient and she gives the British Royals new blood and a breath of fresh air.

That “Queen Of Hearts” interview his mother gave all those years ago, speaking of the establishment, etc – it can’t be great having your mother go public saying those kinds of things about your father, grandmother, grandfather, etc (even if they are The Establishment). No wonder William was so long and so careful in choosing his bride and wife. So, yes, they will work hard to be not dynamic and I think they’ll also be quite happy. 🙂

  59. Lee says:

    Kate…you are absolutely lovely….PLEASE EAT SOMETHING….you need to gain at least 10 pounds….how I wish I had your problem….

  60. Louisa says:

Good luck to the Royal Family trying to teach a chav the protocols of the monarchy!

  61. Christine says:

Can we please discuss William’s fashion? He needs a better tailor. And does he only own the one blue suit?

  62. Jaxx says:

It never ceases to amaze me how people can look at photographs and judge a person’s character, motives, thoughts and feelings. We don’t know this couple or anything but the bare basics about them.

  63. ElleGin says:

I think she looked lovely. She wears outfits that are appropriate and flattering.

What was that protest about anyway? Were people angry cos they were visiting? Why?

Also, I totally agree with feebee.

Anyway, at least this couple look happier than another recently wedded one.

  64. mimi says:

I find it odd that the British people are paying for PR teams for 2 people (who have no real jobs) to travel at the expense of the Canadian people.

I really wonder how British people feel about it.
Obviously the Canadians are pissed and see them as parasites.
They are paying for their vacation for crying out loud!

But how to the Brits feel?
How parents who need that money to be spent on educational programs, or sick and disabled people who don’t get some benefits and treatment (or just “help”) see this.

Think about all the money being spent about styling her, organzing their vacations, pushing positive publicity stories about them and building her up as if she was some actress or singer or politician.

She has no job. All she wanted was to be famous. At least Willian is a military man and doesn’t seem to obsess where are the cameras and have his picture taken.

I feel sad for him. He deserved a woman who wanted to marry him and hand with him for who he is as a person.
Not a woman who see him as her ticket to fame and won’t bother paying attention to anything but where are the photographers.

  65. eternalcanadian says:

@ElleGin, there are lots of people in Quebec who are against the British monarchy (not William and Catherine themselves, just the institution and the way Canada continues to be a “colony” of Britian) because it was the English monarchy that defeated the French monarchy on the Plains of Abraham (ironically a place William and Catherine visited which I thought was a bit improper in Quebec) to make England the ruling country of what would become Canada. It’s a long political drama thst continues to this day. Those people you see in the picture are part of the Quebec movement that want Canada to get out of the monarchy or prevent a British royal member from setting foot in Quebec so any time a British royal member visits Quebec they protest and boo and whatever. Kind of lame they waste their time doing that when if they really want to get Canada and Quebec out of the monarchy they should run for federal office and put forth motions to do so.

  66. moderncanadian says:

i’m a canadian and i find this tour ridiculous. in fact, polls strongly suggest that most canadians under 65 don’t give a shit about the royal family. will and kate seem like a nice enough couple and i hope they end up doing some good in the world, but they should stick to britain for their official “come show us how much you love us, oh common people” visits.

  67. JulieM says:

I completely agree with the posters who say Katie is famous for doing nothing. What a vacuous 29 year old woman, with absolutely no accomplishments of her own except hanging on for 9 years to bag a prince. This is what she wanted. To look pretty and dress well (she is and she does, by the way) and pose for cameras while flicking her hair and flashing Diana’s ring. Why people are so enthralled with this I will never understand.

  68. really says:

Kate is doing a fabulous job! Very lovely! And NO-ONE will ever be Diana but Diana, William was blessed to have such an angel for a mother!

  69. Canadian Taxpayer says:

As a Canadian taxpayer, I resent having to pay for this beauty pagent. We have SO MANY more valuable ways of spending this money to help Canadians.

Further, Wills and Waity may be nice people, but we live in the age of equality. No one should have to bow to anyone. The monarchy doesn’t actually DO ANYTHING. As far as I’m concerned, Britain can keep them.

  70. Anonymous says:

Kate is a famewhore with really nice clothes. How long is it going to be before people see through her? Honestly, I don’t get it.

Do feel sorry for William though. He seems very sweet. Kinda wonder what he’ll go through behind closed doors with her.

  71. KatzeOttawa says:

Well, I’m not sure what the US or International media have been saying about the Cambridges, but it’s been all over Canadian media! The CBC website’s top story is almost always the Royal Tour. I live in Ottawa, where the Duke and Duchess spent some time (they drove by my house 😀 ) and the Canada Day festivities were really lively and fun with them around. There were about 300,000 people on Parliament Hill chanting “Will and Kate” and cheering. It was a good time!

  72. Rita says:

I think Kate and William are doing just great. I know it’s just “shovel ready” waving but Kate looks perfect. Love her style, smile, and her little “parade float” wave.

Once the public and private honeymoons are over I’m sure she’ll get down to a more substantive life (couldn’t get less substantive) but for now I enjoy seeing her.

  73. Dizzybenny says:

up to 80 reporters at any time following them?? lmao!!
that’s the regular amount that follows any Canadian hockey team during an NHL season.
It’s a good thing they came AFTER they annouced that Winnipeg will get a team back.If not the ”royals” would have been page 8 right after the bikini girl on page 7 .Plus she looks like she’s 38 !!

  74. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

‘What have you done for me, lately?’

‘Give me my money back, give me my money back, you bitch. I want my money back…’

I can’t be anything other than a sour grapes about these things. How can I support the idea of paying people for the dubious honour of being reminded that I’m inferior for it? Doesn’t that sound strange? I thought I was kind of lame when people were booing (time to find a hobby) but there’s something very houseboy about it and if you’re looking for a bow, you’ll have to chlorophorm me into it. Congenial? Yes. Prostrating? Can’t.

  75. Stephanie says:

Graceful, stylish, and understated. I like her. I really didn’t at first, but she has grown on me!!

  76. Violet says:

She looks good, but too skinny. Her weight was healthy when she was dating William, but the minute she got engaged she starved herself down. Not something you’d think William would encourage, given his own mother had issues with anorexia/bulimia.

  77. curmudgeon says:

If I were paying taxes for this crap it would piss me off too, cute as they are. Its an expensive and archaic tradition, the royal family. But in the U.S folks you paid for Obama (and every other president, No political sides here) to go on tour to push his political agenda. They all do it and it costs millions. Dems and Reps are private parties. So once the president is elected we shouldn’t pay for him to fly about the country to bolster his party. Whatever party is in office should pony up. Literally millions. Nobody blinked when the coutry was flush, but we are a little strapped right now. Funny how perspectives change, eh?

  78. Digby says:

Your scientific poll amazes me. So what if Katie is looking in a different direction to everyone else — for 1/500 of a second !! You actually think the photographers would send a picture of the back of her head ?? They’ll press the button when she turns to them, and that’s what you see. What you don’t see is all the rest of the time that she’s facing away, towards whatever she’s up to. So there

  79. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I guess perspectives change, but at least a president lives the country and has a job. We have our own green-eyed spectre currently stewarding in the roll of ‘Guy Who Professionally Hates Toronto’–it’s an honoured tradition! No, it’s the notion that a trick of primogeniture aided by skilled, um, ‘love-digging’, is in and of itself reason enough to be expected to feel connected to people whose only role–ONLY ROLE, is to tell me to fork over money at their behest in perpetuity. Um, on what grounds? Inbreeding and intrigue, well I’m convinced. And in return? You’ll live on the other side of the world and that’s it? ‘Who’s Manitoba, you ask?’ Well aren’t you a pip?’ And duties? No one has to justify his life to me, obviously, but I’ve just got a different picture in my mind when I think of ‘welfare cheats’…willful hyperbole. I just think a lot of the Commonwealth Kids are tired of being nigh-on waterboarded into falling into rapture over them. Most of the time we don’t think of each other or have meaningful places in each other’s lives, but c’mon, this is kind of bull. Scoop: Rich chav barnacles self to rich snot, families become collectively wealthier. Waistlines and hairlines disappear in***money!money!money!*** preparation for cash. Oh, well

  80. Ashley says:

Chickadees4me – No I don’t think the sign holder has the option to move to a non “Commonwealth country”. As a Canadian do you know how hard it would be to emigrate? And what would his excuse be “I don’t want to pay taxes to the parastitic royals”, they’d laugh in his face. His plight does not give him top priority over someone genuinely seeking asylum.

So no he does not have the option, but as a citizen of his country he does have the option to bring about change. And good for him. Canada isn’t doing too good right now (like most countries making cuts), why should his money go to a family that is one of the wealthiest in the world (I believe the Grimaldi’s of Monaco are at #1, the Windor’s are at #2).

  81. telesma says:

I love both of these, if not the red hat/fascinator thing. Like I said elsewhere, she’s an English duchess. I expect her to wear boring clothes. These are beautifully tailored, sophisticated, and fairly creative styles that fall within the obvious strictures of her position.

  82. Amerie says:

The white dress is hot! but the gray is fugly!

  83. bhagyashree says:

She is very poorly bred and ugly and ill mannered to be the future queen. When I compare her to Princess Diana or Princess Grace Kelly, she scores nowhere. William could have found a much better one. I dont know why this fugly female!!
