Anne Hathaway is “grateful” to Duchess Kate for dressing like a lady

One Day comes out today. Are you going to see it? I’m debating it. I read the book and hated the last third of the story, and from what I can see, the movie is going to be much, much worse. But I still might see it just because I’m in the mood for a romance. Anne Hathaway has been all over the place this week to promote the movie, and much of it has been meh. I like Anne quite a bit, but she’s one of those people where a little goes a long way. She was on The Daily Show last night – these photos are from outside TDS’s studio, and I want her pants. Badly. Her bit with Jon Stewart was so boring, I don’t even care enough to find the video. Meh.

But here’s something interesting – Anne talking about the Duchess of Cambridge! I didn’t even consider the possibility that Anne could be pro-Kate, but she is. Anne seems to like Duchess Kate mostly for her covered-up, ladylike styles:

Vivienne Westwood may have called Kate Middleton “ordinary” this week but the Duchess has another famous face in her corner: Anne Hathaway. Sitting down with USA TODAY’s Andrea Mandell to talk about her new movie One Day, Hathaway took a royal minute to talk about style.

“Can I tell you how grateful I am to Kate Middleton?” said Hathaway. “Because she is such an advocate for dressing like a lady. I think for a few years that kind of slightly dirty look was adopted by Hollywood – you know, the stringy hair, homeless thing. And I really tried,” she laughs, “I was like ok I’m going to give that a go. (But) it doesn’t suit me, I don’t suit it. I always looked kind of chubby.”

Today she calls Kate’s ladylike wardrobe inspiring. “I’m just very grateful to Kate Middleton for making looking appropriate really fun again,” she says. “So right now my fashion choices are all about Kate Middleton.”

Speaking of fashion, Hathaway dished on getting into Catwoman shape for Dark Knight Rises, which is currently shooting in Pittsburgh. “I had to change my body in order to achieve the shape I wanted for Catwoman,” says Hathaway, noting how each body-hugging catsuit fitting represented personal milestones.

“We fit it over the course of a few months, and every time I would target a different body part we could take off the Spanx,” she laughs. “So it’s not your traditional movie prep.”

It also meant the actress had to stock up on flats. “There’s a reason why she wears heels,” says Hathaway, but “doing stunts in heels is a little hard on your feet. Normally I live in high heels (but) I have to wear flats all day and just kind of save up all my high heel time for the catsuit.”

[From USA Today]

I think I understand what Anne is saying: Kate stands for tailoring, for clothes that fit, for not showing your tatas and your biscuit, for looking occasion-appropriate and pulled together. I will give Kate credit for that too – although if she didn’t do all of those things, she would be viewed as a royal mess. But I still don’t think Kate is particularly stylish, and I find her style more “dated” than “ladylike”.

Oooh, more photos of Anne throughout this week. Some of these styles are the opposite of ladylike and flattering. Gurl, Rachel Zoe is phoning this crap in.

I want Anne’s white sunglasses real bad.

  2. i.want.shoes says:

It’s not like Kate has much of a choice.

I would like to be grateful to Anne for dressing nicely or appropriately too but she’s not giving me much to work with. WTF on that mix-pattern ensemble?

  3. Happymom says:

I think Anne always looks so chic. And I find her adorable and occasionally annoying. I loved her comments earlier in the week that she was living on “kale and dust” to be in shape for Cat Woman-and initially at the gym pregnant Jessica Alba could do more push ups than she.

I cannot STAND this idiot. UGH.

    Love waity!

    She grates my fucking nerves

I like Anne enough-a little bland, but likeable. Still think she was horribley miscast as CW, but hoping she pulls a Ledger and shocks us all. And she jus scored points for wearing an Elvis shirt. 🙂 Want her white sunglasses too!

You know, I really love this chick. Cannot understand the hate. She’s roughly the same age as Linnocent but she’s put-together, smart, focused, self-deprecating, has made mistakes in love and gotten burned and tried hard to move on like a normal woman would, her clothes are rarely uber-glam or fashion-forward but almost always flattering, classy, and sometimes striking, the more I’ve seen her acting the more I’m convinced that she’s pretty damn good and getting better. And I agree that it’s nice to have Waity around–Kaiser, I totally agree that Waity often looks dated or like she’s aiming for a 40-yr-old style–but when I look at the pics of the Kartrashians, I’ll take Waity–and Anne–any day!

    Let’s see:

    (1) Hate Ms. Hathway’s sunglasses and all of her above outfits

    (2) kate is NOT dated – she is classic – there is a big difference.

    (3) The movie has gotten terrible reviews.

I agree with Anne. It has been nice to see a more lady like way of dressing.

Fashion houses have made some beautiful dresses ranging from modest to daring. All well made, and some just flirting closely to the edge of naughty.

And then you have some that are just downright tacky. Sometimes they are even from the same design house.

And like Kaiser said, it is nice not to see someones tatas and biscuits.

  12. meg says:

Those pants are downright offensive and should be burned. (Along with anyone who thought they were a good idea)

AH’s black pants are BEAUTIFULLY tailored! But I’m sure Kate’s wardrobe is strictly planned by a royal committee of some sort and is kinda dated (I don’t mind the “recycling” bit so much). I mean, COME ON, that gray number looks like she works for the airlines…and it’s 1966.

But I need for AH’s press junket to end soon. I have said before that I’m not a fan of hers, but I do want her to succeed in DKR (for all womankind in comic book movies/franchises kinda thing). Right now, the constant quirk is making it harder and harder to imagine her pulling *it* WAAAAAY back/down for the “iconically sexyfied” Selina Klye. And even she admits the reaction to her in the suit was lukewarm, at best. If Nolan is taking Kyle in another direction (read actually creating a memorable and fully involved female character for once), then maybe there won’t be too much of a challenge for AH to overcome.

    Maybe…

It’s sounds to me like she’s a follower. Just because some Hollywood stars dress shabbily didn’t mean she had to follow suit. Couldn’t she have been a individual and dress in the manner she prefered? Why did she have to wait until Kate came around to feel comfortable dressing the way she want to? These comments don’t make her sound like a person whose brave enough to do her own thing.

  15. Bobby the K says:

I hope you get her pants too.

  16. mimi says:

Oh, Anne is so skinny :/

  17. dvz says:

This overrated twatsicle needs to shut the hell up and go the fuck away. No clue what anyone sees in her. She’s as interesting as a can of air.

  18. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Oh, do shut up.

  19. normades says:

    @dvz; lololol.

Anne has no style. This fugly batch of clothing is once again thanks to Rachel Zoe. The clothes “wear her” and those glasses look stupid.
