Remember when there was a huge controversy over then 15 year-old Miley Cyrus posing for Annie Liebowitz in Vanity Fair while wearing just a sheet? Everyone dissected the situation and questioned how her parents could leave her alone long enough for the famed photographer to get those too-sexy shots. Fast forward a few years and Miley is making provocative videos, she’s wearing revealing performance outfits, she’s getting tattoos and she’s regularly going out in sheer tops without a bra. Oh and I almost forgot that she was videotaped smoking a bong!
She’s 18 now so it doesn’t seem like it’s a big deal given her industry, but her new image may be costing her millions. Fox News interviewed a bunch of media experts who presumably analyzed Miley’s CD sales and came to the conclusion that she’s alienated her young fan base. She’s come a long way since Hannah Montana and it’s costing her.
““Few entertainers can transition, and Ron Howard did, from lovable child actor in ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ to memorable adult actor in ‘Happy Days’ and ‘American Graffiti,’ to award-winning director of ‘Apollo 13,’” Jason Maloni, crisis communication expert at Levick Strategic Communications told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column.
“Miley Cyrus should aspire to be on that level and the first step is hard work. Unfortunately, it seems she isn’t far from the path many young adults follow: exploring adulthood; testing the boundaries around them; and flirting with danger through reckless behavior. “
Moreover, as she tossed her good-girl image in favor of a sexy bad girl, her album and box office sales suggest she also tossed away much of her fan base.
“I believe for the young fans who have grown up with her, while she is trying to assert her independence, she is alienating this one-time target audience,” explained Michelle Groover, Public Relations Professor at Georgia Southern University.
“With ‘Hannah Montana’ still airing on ABC Saturday mornings, her fans are confused by what they see on the program with what they see on an entertainment website, a magazine they see and/or hear their parents discuss. Many of her fans are too young to understand the difference between the actress as a real person and the role she plays on the show.”
A rep for Cyrus declined to comment.
Still, Maloni argues that Cyrus still has time to become as successful as a woman as she was as a child.
“The road ahead for Miley is to master her craft. Whether her future lay in music or acting, she needs to be studying at the feet of the best producers and directors there are, and also, watching the older artists and performers around her to learn from their mistakes as well as their successes.
“At this point, Miley could be a flame, or flame out ,” he added.
Miley was given free reign to do whatever she wanted with her career post-Disney. I remember when she bragged that the bizarre bird video for “Can’t be Tamed,” which looked more awkward than sexy, was her idea. Let’s face it, though, she was due for a career leveling out after Hannah Montana ended anyway. Without a Disney platform it’s so much harder to get constant exposure. It doesn’t help that she veered so far away from her old image that she’s now flashing kids who come to her concerts. I wouldn’t want my kid seeing that. Her fan base used to be tweens and it’s not like she’s cool enough for the 15 year-old and up crowd.

I have never liked Miley Cyrus. I thought she was annoying as a child actor, and now she’s just downright trash.
Disney needs to start finding people who are actually talented to star in their shows, and someone needs to pull Miley out of the limelight before she completes her transformation into Lindsay Lohan.

I was never a big fan of Miley but switching up the Hanna M image for the sexed up vixen without much natural talent behind her could never be good for her fan base, especially when parents have a say and purchasing power.
I can understand a Disney star wanting to break away from the “good kid” image and sexying it up a bit but she just takes it to a whole new level. She’s just raunchy and vulgar now.
I hope she finds a niche because as much as I try, I can’t hate her. She seems like an ok person.

She’s growing up in the public eye and that itself is not something easy to do for a young woman.
She is still learning and finding Miley which may take a few stumbles.
She will fall down before she gets it right. She can’t stay a child forever and as long as she isn’t doing anything harmful to herself or others-

Sure, we “have to let her figure herself out.” But we DON’T have to buy it. Miley grossed out my two daughters quite some time ago with her raunchiness, and just about everyone I know who has daughters of that age says the same thing: she’s just too, too “adulterated” for public consumption by her former fan base. It also doesn’t help that young female performers FAR more talented than Miley don’t seem to have to resort to this sort of thing.
(And it doesn’t look like she has any trouble “finding Miley” because in every dang picture, she’s got her hand right THERE — yeah, she found Miley all right. No question about that.)

I never really liked her but I do think she is pretty. My old boss and her daughter used to love her, but once she did that photo shoot at 15 my boss refused to let her daughter watch her show or buy any of her products.

My daughters liked her show but are uninterested in her as a singer/performer. One likes to put on a tee shirt before she puts on her pants or skirt, pull the shirt down until it just covers her underwear and claim that it is “Miley Cyrus’s new dress.” Then the other one will say, “No, no, that’s TOO LONG!”

Miley forgot that most of the fans buying hermerchandise were little girls. The parents of these kids will not spend money on the kind of education she was dishing out.
Her merchandise has been in the dollar stores for some time cuz parents do not like her message.

It’s my birthday, so it’s like the gossip gods made this happen as a present to me. Thank you, Gossip Gods! Next year I’d like her to get pregnant and go bankrupt and end up having to work as a stripper with a C Section, heaven knows she’s been gunning toward that career all her life.
She is like many young women who think that flaunting their sexuality equates to adulthood. When in reality it is character development that makes you a true adult. She definitely wasn’t steered in the right direction and now that she has chose this path as an adult, it all falls on her. She just comes across as slutty and predictable. Didn’t she make buckets of money as a child. She always has that to fall back on.

I kind of gauge the tweens market through my niece. She tells me Abercrombie is what wannabe fobs wear (she used to shop there previously) and that Miley Cyrus is considered gross now… so there ya have it, from the horse’s mouth lol.

This is such a stupid piece. Last year she was the 2nd highest grossing teen, making 48 million dollars. This year, she has 2 movies coming out, has three more she’s in progress on, and made $1.2 million at each show she did this summer. Is she a Disney kid anymore? No. Will her movies do well? Who knows, but she’s still wildly in demand. Sheesh.
