Did Lady Gaga copy an Annie Lennox performance from 1984?

wenn3485644

I know some of you were talking about this controversy yesterday in the Lady Gaga/Jo Calderone/VMA post, but I was going on too little sleep, and I totally missed it. Guess what people are accusing Lady Gaga of NOW? Ripping off another artist. SHOCK!! Only this time Gaga isn’t ripping off Madonna or Bette Midler (or Christina Aguilera!). This time Gaga is being accused of ripping off an iconic 1984 Grammy performance by Annie Lennox/The Eurythmics.

Now, first of all – I was alive in 1984, but I was much too little to watch the Grammys. And while I have never heard of this performance before today, I have to say that if Kelly Bleedin’ Osbourne can reference it within minutes, it’s probably very well-known. That’s right – Kelly O. was the one to point it out on Twitter:

kellyotweet

[From Kelly’s Twitter]

The clip that she referenced (below) is of The Eurythmics’ 1984 Grammy performance, in which Annie Lennox was dressed up in her drag kind gear, and she looked a bit like Elvis and Johnny Cash. Isn’t it funny that when Gaga does the drag king thing, she just looks like a really busted, strung out Adam Goldberg? Here’s the video from 1984:

*sigh*

I love Annie Lennox. So, so much. Amazing voice. And that song still sounds so fresh and amazing today, right? Okay, enough gushing. Once again, here’s Gaga’s performance from Sunday night:

I won’t judge you for going back up to Annie Lennox and watching that performance over and over. Annie is amazing.

Now, as for the complaint that Gaga just jacked Annie’s shtick… I don’t know. Just because Gaga does the drag king thing, does that mean she’s copying everybody who has done the drag king thing, forever and always. Of course I’m concerned about the very similar wiglets, and the similarly unfortunate sideburns (yikes). I think Gaga is a lot like Beyonce in these kinds of situations – both Bey and Gaga pay attention to what other artists do, what’s new and what’s iconic throughout pop music, and they both copy and rework. Madonna did too, come to think of it. Whatever.

Wait, what? Lady Gaga copying another artist? Noooooo.

  2. fancyamazon says:

I don’t know if it was a complete copy or not either, but the outfits were very similar. I can’t watch the video of gaga, but I did watch the Lennox clip. I love her so much. However, if I were Annie, I would be insulted by the outfit alone, if it is a copy. Gaga just looks dirty and skeezy where Annie looks like a sharply dressed androgyny, although you are right about the horrible sideburns.

Artists throughout time have been reworking each other’s ideas….there is nothing new under the sun, as it were. This makes it hard sometimes to judge these acts to be or not to be copying to the point that is is an outright “fraud” of sorts. However, I am starting to think that Gaga and a few others think that they are the only ones to have access to old video clips.

  3. teehee says:

When this first happened I was wondering “how long before the real Joe Calderone comes out of the woodworks and sues Gaga for copying him”

  4. GiGi says:

It just seems so over worked, tired and “done” at this point, doesn’t it? GaGa, while a talented performer, was fresh for about a minute and now just tries too hard. All the time.

  5. lucy2 says:

When the question begins “did Lady Gaga copy-” the answer is usually “yes”.

Annie Lennox is amazing. Love her voice.

  6. mln76 says:

I just think GaGa is overexposed and doesn’t actually know who she is as a performer so you just get these piecemeal and boring performances but she is talented. She needs to take a break. How wonderful is Annie?

  7. Carolyn says:

Oh tx for including the 1984 Eurythmics clip. I remember watching that with my parents as a young teenager and asking them why Annie was dressed as a man. Much more innocent times back then (well, for me anyway). They really did rock. Annie played the piano and sang without backup on an Australian show recently and brought the house down. She still has IT in spades. I like Gaga’s music. I’m getting tired of Kelly shooting her mouth off at what everyone else does. She does nothing interesting herself. Pot calling kettle black – remember her failed single which was basically a copy of Fade to Gray by Visage??

  8. You don't say says:

Annie Lennox has a voice that is beyond great. She can be dressed like a man one minute, then put on a dress and be sexy the next, and it works. I think she has the most beautiful eyes. As for Gaga, no comment.

  9. Skins says:

I kind of like Gaga, but she is trying way too hard to show what an “artiste” she is, when she is really just another pop singer. That crap at the VMA’s was over the top ridiculous and I can’t see how anybody would like it.

  10. ShanKat says:

They don’t make ’em like Annie Lennox anymore.

Lady Gaga is a hatchet-faced hack. She does her meager talent further disservice by aping more talented artists.

  11. Diane says:

Hell yeah she copied. Who will be next?

  12. Ponytail says:

Have a look at the “Who’s That Girl” video on iTunes or YouTube to see the original appearance of the male character – including the point where HE kisses HER (rubbish special effects but still…) Bonus points to anyone who can name all the female UK pop stars in the video !

  13. Riana says:

    Q. Did Gaga copy (fill in the blank)?
    A. Yes.

Let’s face it. Gaga’s personal creativity died around her first album. She had a few extra songs left that didn’t make the first cut which went into the reworked The Fame Monster but after that she was a singer with a massive following and reputation looming over her head which is when she started jacking other more talented singers. Unfortunately Gaga can’t simply Gaga-fy true artistic expression which is why half her crap comes off as so pitiful. The expressions on celeb’s faces while she ranted and railed as Jo on stage was somewhere between confusion and boredom.

What really annoys me is she, unlike Beyonce, rips off people who’s creations were done before the majority of her fan base was alive. Like since no one will immediately connect the dots she has a right to use someone else’s vision to pad her own lack of imagination.

Still she and Beyonce are becoming Tge two most obvious rip off artists on the scene right now.

  14. djork says:

And they are both ripping off–I mean referencing–Lily Tomlin’s 1970s character Tommy Velour.

  15. tapioca says:

I would take an image-thieving Gaga over an image-thieving Beyonce any day based on the quality of the music – Born This Way eats 4 for breakfast and flosses it’s teeth with I Am…. a Pretentious Twit, even with Beyonce stealing all her tracks from other songwriters.

And at least she tried to do something that this generation hadn’t seen before; props too for staying in character all the way through!

  16. the original bellaluna says:

There are no words. Annie Lenox is beautiful in her own right, and her voice is also beautiful in its own right.

I have just about every song she’s ever sung in my collection, and I listen to them almost daily.

Ponytail – “Who’s That Girl” is one of my all-time FAVES! You’ve got Banarama (all 4 of them); Marilyn; Cheryl Baker; Kiki Dee; Kate Garner…I’m sure I’m missing more than one!

  17. mary simon says:

I’m glad Britney had the common sense to decline a kiss.

  18. DetRiotgirl says:

Yesterday I pointed out that Madonna had already done the drag king thing at the VMAs in the 90s, but I somehow had forgotten all about Annie. Forgive me, I’m still young! I wasn’t born yet when the above clip originally aired.

However, now that the comparison has been made, it does seem like a no brainer. Annie has always been known for her androgynous look, and she does it much better than Gaga.

For what it’s worth, I did think Gaga’s little monologue was kind of interesting though. I’m mildly fascinated by her on/off relationship with her douchetastic boyfriend, Lüc Carl. He seems like such a tool box, and it’s interesting to note how much crappier her music got after the two of them got back together.

Also interesting to me, was Jo’s little rant about how he can’t take what a huge star Gaga is. I honestly think she was channeling Lüc for that. He has a book deal and thousands of followers on Twitter because of her, and yet he never thanks her. He never even mentions her. He uses her for publicity, but can’t even be bothered to comment on You and I; a song she wrote for him.

Her first two albums were actually kind of fun. Don’t get me wrong, she was still pretentious, irritating and I was never a fan. But, at least she had a slight sense of humor about herself. With Born This Way, that died and she seems desperate to prove that deep down she’s a rocker chick who likes metal bands and makes profound art.

Everything about her lately screams “chick who is trying to get her boyfriend to take her seriously”, and I think it’s sort of sad. I normally can’t stand Gaga. But, I do feel a pang of sympathy for her when she awkwardly throws herself into promoting this big love song for a guy who doesn’t seem to really love her back.

I think I’m just curious about her love life because she’s done such a good job of keeping it out of the tabloids. It’s pretty much the only thing about Gaga with any sense of mystery left to it. Her stunt queen antics are boring and played out at this point. But, I’m always somewhat fascinated by good relationship drama.

  19. GeekChic says:

I actually think Gaga most resembled Simon Helberg (he plays Howard Wolowitz on the Big Bang Theory). Is anyone really surprised at this point that she isn’t doing anything original? I wish she would give up the gimmick and just sing. Can you imagine how shocked people would be if she went out and gave a performance akin to Adele’s with just a piano and a microphone?

  20. Tierra says:

I really think GaGa looks better as a man and i dont mean that to be snarky but she looks good that way. I didnt catch the beg. of her act,I just saw her do that song, which i liked and Im not even a fan. In fact, I usually cant stand her b/c i think she’s totally over-rated but I was impressed with her performance of that song (cant think of the name).
It didnt remind me of anyone else, just something from the 50’s or something from that period.

  21. The Truth Fairy says:

Either the gimmicks will die or her career will.

  22. aenflex says:

look eventually everyone will have done everything, and nothing will be original copy, if it even is today. Lenox is untouchable, regardless of whether she was the 1st or last. Gaga, in her own way, is untouchable as well. Lenox and Madonna won’t last forever, 84 was 26 years ago. We need a drag for today, 2011, and if Gaga steps up, than so be it.

  23. smh says:

Madonna and Paula Abdul also had performances dressed as men. Though in theirs I think they stripped the men clothes off at a point. I don’t know if she nicked the concept from elsewhere but she ripped off one of the very few tolerable Madonna songs already (tolerable only because it was before the 2000’s and she wasn’t as much meddling in the writing process back then).

  24. Eve says:

Have you guys noticed that every two weeks or so we’re discussing Gaga copying somebody else’s music, outfits, ideas, stunts? Scratch that. EVERY time we talk about Gaga we discuss the fact she may be copying someone else?

  25. Addie says:

She can go ahead and copy all she wants, but she musn’t CLAIM to be ‘re-inventing’ anything or pretend to be original and ‘self inspired’.

Who is she trying to fool?

  26. snappy81 says:

I think min76 is on to something with: I just think GaGa is overexposed and doesn’t actually know who she is as a performer so you just get these piecemeal and boring performances but she is talented. She needs to take a break. How wonderful is Annie?

Still, I can’t help thinking that “it’s all been done”. Doesn’t anyone around her say, “hey, you know this reminds me of [fill in the blank]” before she puts these songs/characters/performances out there? Maybe she needs better “people”?

  27. hairball says:

I agree too that the artists in the audience were looking bored and embarrassed for her. When Britney Spears is on stage giving you a ‘you’re an idiot’ look….not good.

I was ok with Lady Gaga at first but then she just became so full of herself like everyone in the world lived or died for what she said. She actually believed she was some Messiah.

  28. Ell says:

    Annie’s unique, I’m don’t think GaGag is.

The 80’s was a confusing time, I remember first seeing the Eurythmics on Top of Pops, Boy George was about at the same time, I honestly couldn’t work out who was male and who was female.

  29. Cleo says:

Wow, Jews really do have amber eyes like Mediterranean Barbie dolls.

    Her nose is her jewelry.

But I hope she stops doing this look really really soon. Like NO MAS.

  30. Gemini says:

I’m 50 with young kids so I still listen to current music and I am finding that there is not much originality left anymore in music much like fashion, it gets recycled. So I don’t buy the hype when I’m watching GaGa, Kesha, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy or Alicia that I’m watching music history because its just a different version of what I saw or listened to 20 or 30 years ago.
Actually GaGa reminded me of Andrew Dice Clay.

  31. mia girl says:

What random target is next in Gaga’s copy cat antics? Will she push a derivative of Marilyn Manson? Androgyny ala Boy George with braids and ribbons? Perhaps her take on the over the top performance/piano antics of Peter Allen? Or maybe she’ll go for the motherload and rip off an opera piece – Wagner’s Ring Cycle be warned.

@the truth fairy: “Either the gimmicks will die or her career will” ITA!!!

What struck me watching the VMAs is that you had all these female pop stars strutting their stuff with big production numbers/gimmicks, and then Adele comes on stage with just piano accompaniment, a microphone and a single spotlight and blows them all away!

  32. TL says:

What the Ralph Machio is going on here!!

  33. AngelMay says:

Gaga is over. It was funny/ pitiful when Britney shut her down. Gaga is still that pretentious teenage girl desperate to get in with the popular kids.

  34. Jules says:

What else does Gaga do other than rip someone else off? Besides, she looks better as a man, she/he should stick with the look.

  35. Annie says:

@mia girl, say what u will adele’s performance was no where as good as bey’s own B was the day’s star.

  36. fancyamazon says:

@DetRiotgirl perhaps that is part of her problem…..maybe she will pretend not to copy “You’re so Vain” next……stay tuned.

  37. theaPie says:

    She looks good as man.

  38. mia girl says:

@annie – Yes Beyonce’s baby rub was definitely the moment of the night, and her performances are always great. But after having seen it twice, I am fairly certain Bey was lip synching the majority of the song. She sang a small part and then switched to a pre-recorded track. That’s fine. It was still great.

But for that reason, I’ve got to say best performance was Adele.

  39. DetRiotgirl says:

@fancyamazon Hmmm… I think you’re onto something there. I imagine her version would go something like this:

“You walked into the lower east side bar
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hair was blown out with aqua net
And your spandex pants were apricot
You had one eye on the fog machine
As you imagined it was still the 80s
And all the girls wondered if you were a hipster
    You were a hipster and…
    You’re so lame
You probably think this song is about tools
    You’re so lame
You probably think that they’re nothing like you
    Don’t you?
    Don’t you?
You had me several years ago
    When I still got irony
You said we made such a pretty pair
As long as it wasn’t publically
But you still wanted me to promote your blog
And plug your book for free
    I had some dreams
    I stole them from Madonna
    Them from Madonna and…”

  40. Novaraen says:

On Gaga the male schtick is suuuuuper creeeeeepy. On Annie…it’s hot as hell! 🙂

If Gaga would just step up and say “Yeah, I admire all these people that I’m emulating…and that’s why you see so much of these other talented artists in what I do”….instead she says NOTHING and continues to copy others and act like it’s all new.

  41. fancyamazon says:

    @DetRiotgirl lol: ) love it!

  42. jover says:

Love the posts and detroitriotgirl those lyrics are wayy better than most pop lyrics you should be writing for gaggles, bouncy, riri and others.Riana and min76 you’re definitely on to it; not only her creativity but the “creativity” of her team has withered, look at this comparison by 1973 led zeppelin had five albums out all great with songs played and covered everywhere up to today and on their own efforts; the talent, song writing skills, musical knowledge and live musicianship have declined, gaggles is at a dead end she can’t do rock, urban, or country because she would never be accepted by those fans – she went into dance pop because that was the easiest and worked those themes to death. She became famous way too soon, and whatever genuine artistic development could have occurred was thwarted by her meteoric rise – although i’m a detractor she needs to go away for five years to achieve real musical/personal development/knowledge and then come back fresh – but in today’s pop scene that’s pretty much impossible.

  43. Ron says:

What would be shocking is to have Gaga walk out on stage in a gorgeoues gown, with beautiful hair and make-up and rely on her talents. That would make me fall the fuck over.

  44. Dizzybenny says:

@Addie.Perfect point! It’s not that she’s copying that’s the problem is that she CLAIMS she’s original and an ”artist”.
Leave the coke behind CaCa maybe you will finally see yourself for what you trully are.A talented singer with an attention deficit disorder.

  45. original kate says:

    of course she did.

  46. cindy says:

I was expecting Gaga to hold up her arm and open her mouth like Bowzer off of Sha na na.

  47. Diane says:

    @DetRiotgirl: That’s hilarious!

  48. Feebee says:

Annie Lennox is an original. Never heard of her copying any one. I don’t mind the copying/paying homage I just wished it was acknowledged like when Beyonce ripped off an artist’s work for one of her videos and never said boo about the source material.

The thing that irks is that Gaga looked similiar to Lennox at the MTV Awards!!! Essentially the same show, just a generation later. Which makes it smack of copying instead of just 2011’s drag.

Thanks for including the Eurythmics performance. Always nice to remember when the top artists didn’t need 50 freaking dancers behind them to make it “a performance”. Not everyone has Lennox’s pipes and stage presence.

  49. Thea says:

I think she looks like a cross between Ralph Macchio and Amy Winehouse in drag. She is grasping at straws now. Why not just sing and forget the drama for a while?

  50. velourazure says:

RE: #29 Lady Gaga is Jewish?

  51. Dawning Red says:

I just refer to her as Lady Xerox.

  52. Ramona Q says:

I give lotsa credit to Gaga for being so unsexy on purpose, in the sex-saturated music industry today.

Can you imagine Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyonce doing a performance that didn’t FOCUS on their SEXED UP image to the point of obsession?

Gaga’s music sucks, and she is annoying, but I give her credit for dressing like Adam Goldberg and getting a major rise from people out of it.

If Annie Lennox did it 27 years ago, so what, it is even more relevant today in our crazy porno society.

  53. bluhare says:

Actually, what I thought of seeing her photo was Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan.

  54. Goofpuff says:

@Dawning Red lol Lady Xerox is perfect!

eh. Lady Gaga is getting desperate because she’s and her crazy ass team are running out of ideas. And her stupid Jo character was just an excuse to brag about herself and win herself egotastic points.

Why doesn’t she reinvent herself as a character that actually does some good instead of one douchy character after the next? Oh that’s right, because she can’t actually act so must stay close to herself as possible.

  55. Swan Jacca says:

When your music isn’t very good you have to resort to cheap gimmicks and cheesy costumes. See Gene Simmons.

  56. Nymeria says:

Annie Lennox was spine-tingling in her 1984 performance. And incredibly sexy.

At least 2 posters grasped the Annie Lennox connection yesterday. From the “Lady Gaga as Joe Calderone at the VMAs: now she’s copying Andrew Dice Clay?” thread:

“Years before Gaga, before Madonna, I’m pretty sure Annie Lennox dressed up like a guy during one of her performances, and looked exactly like Gaga did last night.” (Joe, #44)

“Annie Lennox did it better 20 years ago. Fail. Next.” (Jill, #82)

  57. Just Sayin says:

The test of time will be the final judge. Anne passes with no problem, she is still relevant as she has the talent to back it up. As for the copy cat hack Fab Morvan ring a bell.

  58. gee says:

I agree a million times over with the sentement: it’s ok that she’s “referencing” or stealing, but she needs to give credit!!

  59. Paula Berry says:

Geeze, why is everyone hating on gaga!?
She’s been doing the “Joe thing” for years Now in
interviews. It’s like she can’t do anything without someone yelling about her having no creative thoughts on her own. I don’t think it’s copying anne (who I love btw) by wearing a mens suit.
Has she looked like Madonna sure she has but she’s already said that. I’m an artist and I’ve been to 3 gaga concerts 4 beyonce concerts and 2 Madonna concerts. They are all amazing and born with the gift, why can’t we just realizes that. It’s like people are confused when gaga looks ugly or crazy and they can’t wrap their heads around her and are always saying she’s crazy. Yeah crazy like a fox. This girl can give a performance that’s amazing and have every person hanging on her every word. I get it, and I find it refreshing to finally have an artist who isn’t “beautiful” and who can think outside the box something that the glamorous types would never
do! I’ve never been to a concert where everyone is so emotional not because they are looking at thier favorite artist but because of what the artist is saying and the powerful message they r delivering! She has an amazing message and I thank her for it! I’m not gay but I think it’s wonderful that she can have a voice for people who are hurting over their sexuality, being bullied or disowned for it.

  60. hairball says:

@Paula Berry: Yes it’s nice she has contributed to having a positive message for gay tolerance. But she does not think outside of the box. She copies everyone else.

She seriously has believed her own hype and I have to keep myself from gagging at the pious statements she makes. The truth is, a lot of people, myself included, don’t really care what she has to say.

She decided for whatever reason to hoist herself on a pedestal and is getting burned for it. She went on and about not hating anyone or something like that, then like 2 days later she is calling someone/thing ‘retarded’.

I don’t care that she’s not perfect, but she had declared she was and some Messiah. So yea, it’s a bit sickening.

    She needs a reality check.

  61. Pedro Madasaw says:

This is Bad–AnneLennox di a much beter job!

  62. Madison says:

Who hasn’t she copied., nothing original about her.

  63. Little.grrl.lost says:

Is it weird that I actually find her kind of attractive in drag?

  64. Catherine says:

    I’m sick of her s**t.

  65. ann says:

Agree with #53. I’ve seen a side picture of her dressed this way and she reminds me of a brooding Bob Dylan.
Oh, and Cate Blanchett stole the show in playing Dylan. I wished I could remember the name of the movie though.

  66. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Thank you Kaiser for being reasonable in your last paragraph. I agree.

Kelly Osbourne can kiss my ass. Performing in Drag doesn’t mean your copying someone’s perform crazy person (not the word I wanted to use). (Sooooo tweeting that when I am done.) I don’t know why everyone has to ride Lady Gaga and be such bitches to her. I just don’t get it. Some serious unnecessary hate on her.

  67. sam says:

Its called putting on a show. If she didn’t put on a show in some way then you would all be complaining that she was boring!

Each star has their own way of doing this – and yes if you look around I can guarantee that they will have all copied elements from somewhere – thats the celebrity package!

The fact that it causes so much discussion simply means that you are all paying attention.

  68. Mauibound says:

    Gaga is boring period .

  69. Kloops says:

The difference is that Annie’s performance still feels edgy and…subtle, maybe? She let’s the performance speak for itself. Gaga’s feels contrived and rife with ego stroking. I couldn’t watch all of it bc it was uncomfortable, but wasnt there a whole bit about how Gaga dumped ‘Jo’? I don’t know, I like to think Annie’s alter ego would be all “I’m hot either way. Deal with it motherf*ckers.”

Nothing about Annie screams desperation but everything about Gaga does. Waste of talent.

  70. thetruthhurts says:

Instead of it being about an ex-wife, Lady Gaga is the LeAnn Rimes SWF of music.

  71. thetruthhurts says:

Brandi Glanville better watch out, GaGa might just start copying her swimsuits too. There is no originality in the musical artists today. Sad.

  72. Ale says:

Gaga is more like bob dylan, Lennox looked like a man throughout the 80’s not just in drag performance and she and Eurythmics were ridiculously overrated, Dreams are made of this is now as dated and pretentious as it gets.

  73. hanna says:

I think gaga looks better as a dude, :))

  74. lrm says:

music today sucks. even the 90’s and early 2000’s had a slew of great female vocalists-alanis, jewel, sarah, lauren, erykah, of course tori amos, joan osborn, heck even paula cole has an actual good voice and writes songs/plays an instrument.
Add t that alot of collaboration santana and everyone, sting with middle eastern, prince and MJ still doing their thing along with madonna and you had a range of pop semi-talents with actual singer/songwriters…..
while yo umay have heard the same song by an artist over and ver again for a few months, the person probably could actually sing and possibly wrote her own music…..plus all lthe 80’s carryovoers like paul simon, lennox, van morrison, david byrne, peter gabriel, eminem, many great rap and hip hop artists,etc-people who continued making great music and it was played on the radio….
there was a variety until abut ten years ago.
Today, it’s only crap-which is why gaga is considered ‘so talented’-b/c she has a decent enough voice and writes some songs…..

AND producers are trying to make all the genres blend-it’s ‘almost country, almost pop, almost 80’s, almost rap, etc’
and it nearly always sucks these days!it’s the same 4 songs. rhianna said ‘this is an exciting time in music’. bwa ha ha. for her, maybe.
when my 10 yr old hears all of the ppl lady gaga has copied, ,even he is starting to tire of her…
It’s not that she copies, it’s that she acts like the original purveyor.

And she is not reworking anything; she is just copying.
i try not to read her posts, but i had to when i saw the annie lenox in the title. my ten year old adores the eurythmics; what can i say-he has great taste.

  75. Jayna says:

The song is soulful. and she sang it with a scowl the whole time. My complaint is it was dull and cheesy. She didn’t get a standing ovation for a reason. It was a mediocre opening for a big awards show. She never held my attention in a good way, only in a cringeworthy way. She’s given some amazing performances before.

Anyone on this site who doesn’t have Adele’s 21 album. buy it ASAP. Best album of the year so far and will be a classic album forever.

  76. Lushus L. says:

Cher dressed up like Elvis in her “Walking in Memphis” video. I believe that was in 1995. Hmmm.

  77. Jayna says:

Irm, I’m with you. I buy new music, but it’s disposable most of the time and I lose interest. Adele’s 21 is mindblowingly beautiful and mostly just her and the piano. Very stripped down instrumentwise. Gaga’s Born This Way was disappointing. Maybe if I was a teen I would feel differently.

I remember Toni Braxton’s debut album in the 90s. So fresh sounding. And Babyface’s For the Cool in You album is one of my all time favs of the 90s as was Seal’s first two brilliant eclectic albums. But don’t forget Alicia Keyes. She’s a brilliant artist from this past decade and Pink’s album was such an original gem singing and writing about the ending of her marriage.

    HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE:
Annie–> only dressed as a guy and sang (what does dressing as a guy have to do with the song she’s singing?)
Gaga—> actually created a CHARACTER with a NAME and PERSONALITY. (appeared in her music vid for You and I, and actually related to the song)

  79. anne_000 says:

it just seems as if the quality of the singer is based on the ratio of the number of backup dancers one doesn’t have. the less, the better quality.

  80. Katie says:

Is it sad that I think that Annie Lennox actually comes off as a really, really sexy dude? I love her and her music; “Love Song for a Vampire” from Interview With the Vampire is a great song.

And not to defend Gaga or anything, but I think her whole “Jo Calderone” schtick is supposed to emanate the vibe of one of those 50s’ greaser/tough guys. She’s Italian, it fits. I think the parallels that can be drawn between her and Annie Lennox is that they both chose to channel the same vibe, which would mean that they were *both* copying the guys who did their hair like that in the past. I think people need to give Gaga a break on the copying. All forms of art copy themselves as time progresses; how many original ideas can humans come up with?

I’d much rather see Gaga and her hilarious drag-king self actually having a presence on stage than Chris Brown getting applauded for his dancing. Sure, boy can dance, but people are so quick to forget what he did to Rihanna. Although she tries too hard most of the time, Gaga stands for something, and I like that about her.

  81. Hyde says:

Say what you want about Gaga… she sure has a hellava lot more talent than Kelly O. I mean really!!!! Kelly, why so critical? Insecurity? Jealously? Celebrity by birth, what an accomplishment!!! I…am…Ironman……All…Aboard…hahahahahahahaha

  82. filthycute says:

    Shocked.

Another funny thing: THIS, Annie Lennox, is live singing. Real singing.

What we hear from Gaga and Beyonce these days and credit as “live singing!” is a farce. None of them are singing live.

    Annie sounds awesome, but real.

I remember feeling lit on fire by this performance, watching it on TV as a 6 year old.

  83. thebutlerdidit says:

Errr, no. Evidently you guys are too young, except Gemini, who accurately placed this “homage.” This is a take on the Andrew Dice Clay hosting that got him banned from the MTV awards. He did the whole schtick, smoked on stage, etc. This year was the first year they let him back to the show. That said, she needed to ditch the Tish School Junior Monologue business. She’s not good at it. I like her music, can anyone jusr get her to remove her head out of her own ass and sing her songs?

  84. Layzo says:

I don’t think there’s an original bone in this girl’s body. She’s such a rip-off artist. Most of her songs and videos remind me of Madonna in her hey days.

She is such an overrated artist…err copycat. There’s emulating and copying. This chick straight up just copies with nothing to show that is truly hers.

  85. krimekat says:

Lady Gaga is nothing original . . . copy cat!!! Oh, and her music sux!

  86. sonia says:

not only does she copies Annie’s iconic performance but also tries to kiss Britney to show she can be Madonna… i have from day 1 ever since I have known her have not found her an original.

  87. Francesca says:

It wouldn’t matter if she copied people if she do them one better, ya? She didn’t do anything but look freaky…

  88. Natalie says:

“Did Lady Gaga copy an Annie Lennox performance from 1984?”

Of course she did. Gaga doesn’t have an original bone in her body, nor an original thought in her convoluted little head.

  89. Amanda says:

Interesting. I really didn’t get the whole performance anyways?

  90. Hi there, I found your website by way of Google whilst searching for a related matter, your web site got here up, it appears to be like good. I’ve added to my favourites|added to bookmarks.

  91. Ru says:

I concur with everyone’s statements who label gaga an unoriginal rip-off artist. I’d like to only add a few other artist names that have not been mentioned that get over looked: Nina Hagen’s outlandish fashion savvy (if she even knows who she is)

  92. Ru says:

Sorry….I didn’t get to finish listing artist names before this site uploaded my comment.

To continue: Nina Hagen’s fashion savvy was considered wild and outlandish but original in the early 80’s…I’m just saying; and for her vocals, give credit to Allison Moyet (from Yaz), and Cyndi Lauper too. I also sometimes catch hints of Back Street Boys and N’Sync in her music *haha*. Anyone else hear it? Again, just saying.

  93. A says:

For your information, Lady G has just ripped off a very close friend of mine..
    Its sickening…
I believe this person does not appreciate these artists she steals.
