It’s not that I’m disagreeing with Emma Watson when she talks about wearing “too much” makeup. She’s right – all too often, she does wear too much for someone so young, someone with presumably good skin and strong features that don‘t need a lot of extra stuff. No, what I’m trying to point out is that Emma is wrong to think that her makeup issues are the BIGGEST “beauty faux pas”. No, Emma. That would be your hair, at least in my opinion. That hair makes you look like Justin Bieber, and I never get tired of making that comparison. Emma Watson and The Bieb could be sisters. Or brothers? Anyway, here are Emma’s thoughts on beauty – keep in mind that she’s the newest face of one of the largest beauty/cosmetics/fragrance companies in the world:
From chopping off her hair into a short pixie in 2010 to rocking dramatic Black Swan-inspired eye makeup at this year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere, Emma Watson is no stranger to experimenting with her look.
But even the gorgeous Brit, who always appears polished and chic, admits that even she’s prone to a makeup mishap from time to time.
“Wearing too much makeup has been my biggest beauty faux-pas,” she told Britain’s Hello! magazine. “I truly, truly believe that beauty is something that comes from within. You can only really look beautiful if you feel beautiful on the inside. It shows through your face, the way you move and the way you hold yourself.”
Watson goes on to admit that despite her down-to-earth approach to outer beauty, she still covets cosmetics.
“The funny thing about me is that I do have a lot of products — I’ve always loved makeup and its ability to transform you,” she said. “But I don’t actually wear a lot of it, so there is an irony that I own so much of it but wear so little. But I do love beauty products.”
And besides skipping the layers of makeup, Watson’s other live-by beauty rules are: “Don’t over-pluck your eyebrows and always take your makeup off before you got to bed!”

Don’t you love it when 21 year olds deign to give women beauty advice? No offense to Emma and the brigade of teenagers trying to sell me crap, but I would much rather hear beauty advice from women who are older than me and look younger than me. Women like… Monica Bellucci, or Julianne Moore, just off the top of my head. Still, it’s always good advice when you tell girls to take off their makeup at night. As for over-tweezing… it’s weird because I would love to tweeze the hell out of Emma’s brows. Right? She might need to rethink that rule.
As for her whole “I wear too much makeup but you should still buy Lancome stuff, please” message – I guess it makes some kind of sense. Some women just love to buy lots of beauty products, even if they don’t get around to using the stuff. I’m that way about shampoo and soap, honestly. I have stacks of soap and shampoos that I buy because I like the smell and I want to try them all out… eventually.

Ah, yes, I remember well. That gown…that make up…the hair.
Sigh, youth.
Did the top half of her gown come unfastened and fall down?
I think that Emma could be so cute, because she is sort of classically good looking. She does need some hair though and a tad less eye make-up than pictured here. 😉 I, too, confess to owning lots of make up -expensive stuff too, but I hardly wear it any more! She has such lovely skin!
I did like that dress, though. It was edgy.
I forgive her hair. She’s young. When I was a teen, I decided that I loved Twiggy and that I needed to chop off my long locks into that exact hairstyle. It was such a fail, and I have the unfortunate senior photos to prove it. And come to think of it, I went through a heavy-handed eye makeup, pale lip phase.
Although, she’s in her 20’s now, so maybe the ‘young’ excuse is waning…
I think her eyebrows are fine. Any thinner would be too thin! I kind of get what she’s saying which is basically “this is what I do, I’m only young, I don’t have any substantial beauty advice but I’m here to sell Lancome.”
She looks so much better with the long hair.
And what’s with all the eyebrows ladies? Can’t you make them behave? Yes I’m looking at you too fugly Pippa.
i actually love her eyebrows. i think their shape and size are perfect.
omg – how did i miss seeing that dress the first time? she should have counted that as a big blunder lol.
You would tweeze the hell out of her current eyebrows? ARE YOU f-in NUTS?! Any thinner than that and it’d look like ten kinds of hell. Maaaaan….
No, she does not have to rethink tweezing her eyebrows, at all. They are fine.
That dress and make up was a big mistake though. Gross.
I love Harry Potter but the more i hear from Emma it irritates me. I think her hero must be Goop, she has that vibe, which is not a good thing.
I don’t understand the problem with her brows? I think they look good. She has naturally heavy brows but she keeps them groomed. It’s not like she has caterpillars on her face! I have thick brows, too, and I once over-plucked and it completely changed how my face looked (I looked so mean!). I’ve never done it since. I’ve just accepted that I have heavy brows and plucking is about shape and management, not changing my face.
I support Emma’s “don’t overpluck” message.
I for one lovemher short hair! It takes a lot of confidence in yourself to go and chop off as much as she did, with the hair texture she has! She looks beautiful with the short hair, it highlights her strong features bc she doesn’t have this monstrous pile of curly hair to hide behind.
Too much make-up, but also her penchant for figure-skating outfits. Hopefully she’s outgrown those.
I love the hair myself but i may be in the minority. If you had to have exactly the same haircut for nine years you wouldnt mind a change either! She would suit more relaxed looks- she is naturally so good-looking putting too much effort in doesnt look quite right
i love her hair and her “advice” is completely true. my mom always told me the same things! i just think she’s young and appreciates trying new things fashion-wise. might as well try it now, when you can pull off wacky outfits vs. when you are 40, dressing 20.
she’s beautiful – doesn’t need all that make up
I like the hair personally – she has that pixie face that can pull it off
her worst crime is being unable to act her way out of a paper bag
Her brows are absolutely perfect! Not a hair out of place. Some of us have naturally thicker brows and don’t want the upkeep or the startled, angry look that comes with overplucking them.
She could probably have used a little MORE makeup on that hickey on her neck!
I love a strong brow, but why does no one ever talk about her smugface?
I think it’s refreshing that a young actress is saying ‘less is more’ for make up – look at some of the other younger) girls and how they cake it on.
Wearing too much makeup? Girl please! I still haven’t forgotten this: http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/photo_galleries/regular_galleries/1214-emma-watsons-harry-potter-premiere-style-evolution/photos/1310664703_emma-watson-11-lg.jpg
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? She is wearing a bra strap around her head and a dress that looks like a hybrid between a picnic blanket and a hamantaschen that ends at the cankle. Tea length or maxi girl – there is NO in between.
Sorry, that’s bugged me for years. And honestly, make up is the least of my worries. After a trillion red carpet events I’d get bored and start trying some weird stuff too!
MJ that’s not a hickey, it’s her earring shadow!! Do9es look like a hickey though 🙂
@Brooklyn – sweet Jesus, she was what, all of thirteen at the time, possibly fifteen?
I’d hate to be judged for what I wore as a teen – that really seems overly harsh. Rich teen, sure, but still, just a bleedin’ *kid*.
All She needs is learn how to act. She really sucks at it.
She is not ugly, she is just plain as hell, as well as being a very bad actress
She’s a kid. A good one. People can let her be creative occasionally without soooo much judgment. OHMYGOSH!!! Badly done! It affects them far more than most ever give one passing thought to.
Who didn’t wear something completely bizarre a time or two in their youth? Its an expected rite of passage. Its called originality. You don’t realize true class and taste are simple elegance till later in life. Some never do as evidenced by grotesque examples of sub-humanity such as gaga, snookie and the like.
This makeup regret is a tiny spark of individuality by a girl that obviously listens to and was hurt by what the “critics” spewed. For shame people. There are far bigger to fry.
I am a mother to daughters of this age. Bad form all around.
You recognize therefore significantly in the case of this matter, made me for my part imagine it from a lot of various angles. Its like men and women are not involved until it is something to do with Girl gaga! Your own stuffs nice. All the time deal with it up!
