Bryan Cranston: “Any one of us could become a horrible dangerous person”

I love “Breaking Bad” so much. It’s just a phenomenal show that manages to bring it week after week. This upcoming weekend’s episode is sadly the last of the fourth season, which makes me want to ram my fists against the wall and yell “why?!” but maybe I’ve just had too much coffee this morning.

Star Bryan Cranston was on “The Today Show” this morning promoting the finale. I kind of vacillate on whether I find him hot or not. I know he’s an older dude at 55, but there’s something really compelling about him when he has hair. Then he plays his character too well and I start to associate him with Mr. White and think he’s a nut job with cancer who just happens to be a genius at chemistry. Cranston said some pretty interesting things this morning in regard to his character and what he’s learned from the show, namely that we’re all capable of being criminals.

Matt Lauer: An article I read, which by the way called [Breaking Bad] one of the best four shows of the last ten years… says “It seemed like this was going to be the story of a man forced to become a criminal because he’s dying of cancer. That’s the elevator pitch, but that’s completely unrelated to what the show has become. The central question on Breaking Bad is this ‘What makes a man bad?’ Is it true?

Bryan Cranston: It is. What I’ve learned from this experience is that any one of us, even the meekest person among us, could become a horrible dangerous person given the right set of circumstances.

Matt: In a split second?

Bryan: Well maybe not in a split second. Over four or five seasons.

He was funnier than I expected. In a way I agree, because I know I would do some desperate things in a life or death situation. You never know what’s going to happen and that’s a large part of this show’s appeal.

As for how it’s going to go for Bryan’s character Walter White, he said “he’s down the road too far now… it started out very altruistic, he wanted to leave something for his family… He decided to do something risky for the first time in his life.”

Matt questioned Bryan about his career post-“Malcolm in the Middle” and the fact that he was only being offered goofy dad roles. Matt asked him “Most actors want to support their families, how hard was it to turn those [roles] down?

Bryan joked “I don’t care for my family very much so I was willing to take the risk. It was easy to turn them down actually because the industry has the tendency to try and pigeonhole an actor… But I don’t want to help them do that, so I [wanted] to veer off and do something else.”

He also explained that he has to fly home every weekend to his family in L.A. when he’s away filming in New Mexico. He sounded pretty ok with it. “Actors historically have been vagabonds… so we have to go and accept that part of our lives.”

I was so impressed with Cranston and my crush was renewed with this interview. He’s funny, grounded and an amazing actor.

There are 16 episodes left for “Breaking Bad” which will be split into two seasons. While we have more of this incredible show to look forward to it surely won’t be enough.

Also, I know Gus is a terrible person and we should want him dead for Jesse and Mr. White’s sake, but he’s so badass that I don’t want him to die. If you guys request it, I’ll do a recap on Monday! Maybe I’ll just link to Videogum’s recap and add my thoughts though, because their recaps are the best.

    Awesome show indeed.

Bryan Cranston: “Any one of us could become a horrible dangerous person”

    He’s right.

P.S.: I liked him on Saturday Night Live — and kinda hot when he showed up wearing underwear in that sketch I hate (What Up With That).

It is an amazing show, and being from Albuquerque, I also love seeing all the familiar places. And as far as old-guy-crushes go, I can’t get enough of Hank. So glad he’s not an invalid anymore. Oh and Jesse. I love Jesse too.

  4. lucy2 says:

Brilliant actor on a brilliant show. Holding out for a different role after Malcolm was probably the best career movie in recent Hollywood history.
I disliked Hank at first, but now he’s one of my favorite guys. The shootout scene last season was excruciating.

I can’t help rooting for Gus too – I’m always more intrigued by the reserved, quiet, almost elegant villains that over the top blowhards. Ben on Lost, WoFat on the new 5-0, etc. Gus is fascinating.

Cranston is such a BAMF and gave a great performance in Drive. Kaiser, Celebitchy, THANK YOU for these interesting posts instead of Kardashian galore!

It’s not the last episode, there are 13 this season. Be prepared for this Sunday.

  7. Me says:

I dont like tv much but I LOVE this show.

I felt sympsthy for Gus in his flashback, I even began to like him, but last episode renewed the fact that he needs to die. Like Walt, he probably started off a good person and his circumstances led him to where he is now, but he’s too far gone there’s no option left for him but to die (for Walt and Jeese’s sake).

As for my favorite character, I’m starting to really like Odenkirk’s role. He brings the much needed comedy. Still CANNOT stand Skyler. I also don’t hate Walt this season as much. Jeese’s starting to get on my nerves though. He needs to look past all the trickery Gus keeps throwing his way.

  9. Rita says:

I think this show is great because it is not so “main stream”.

    • sup says:

oh god who cares if it’s main stream or not? point is that it’s one of the best written shows out there, with extremely good acting talents. i hate it when people start hating on good stuff when it’s “mainstream” it’s so hipstery so fake and forced. actually this folly existed way before hipster shit but honest to god i can’t understand why people decide that something isn’t cool enough once it’s discovered and enjoyed by many. they’ll disown their favourite bands, miss out on some great music because they “sold out” wtf kind of mentality is that?

  10. Really says:

LOVE LOVE this show. Please recap. Amazed at how they are able to keep me at the edge of my sofa ever week. I do find his wife & son to be annoying characters but I guess they are necessary.

  11. Liz says:

Agreed. Anyone who’s read Dostoyevsky also agrees.

  12. Pyewacket says:

Love Cranston and it is sad that the show has been canceled! Thanks AMC!

  13. Leticia says:

@Liz, yes, you are right. also, the bible speaks of mankind’s innate depravity. We are all capable of doing anything, given the right temptation and circumstance. I have to keep a tight leash on myself – I’m so easily tempted!

  14. The H says:

ADDICTED to this show. When I started watching it it was fairly late, I watched three seasons in a week. I couldn’t sleep until around 4am. Now that I’m caught up waiting a week in between episodes is torture. I’m fairly consumed, yes, but the writing and the characters- brilliant. I could go on and on (and I do!) but ive just got to say- thank you for this article..
    And recap!!!!!!!!!!!!

God I’m going to miss this show when it’s over. Nothing comes close.

  15. kristin says:

love this show love walt & jesse & gus
    very timely well done masterpeice

  16. Michelle says:

Love this show so much. Such great acting and writing.

Remember that scene after Walt’s assistant (forgot his name) was killed and Gus killed his henchman while Walt was pleading to go back to cooking? When Gus said “well, get back to work’, i felt a chill down my spine and I had a twitch in my neck. Such a powerful show.

And yes, what I like the most about the show is that it shows that we are mostly bitches to circumstance and we are all capable of behavior we now think is deplorable.

  17. LeeLoo says:

    Greatest. Show. Ever.

YES, please do a review!!!! I love Gus and I hope he doesn’t die in the finale. I want Gus to come back and melt faces in season 5. Gus = doom that walks. I hope we see Mike once more before the season ends.

In all honesty I’ve come to hate Walt this season and I am now solely on the side of Jesse. I see the show as doing that to us. They are making Jesse into the protagonist and Walt into the antagonist, I definitely feel that it will be a theme going into the final season (s).

  18. Aqua says:

This is the only show that not only will I absolutely not miss during the regular season but it’s well worth watching the repeats as well!

  19. lin234 says:

Sometimes I still can’t believe this is the same guy in Malcolm in the Middle. He is a terrific actor.

  20. sassy says:

This show IS a meth hit. Every single actor in this show is so on point and intense in every scene. I don’t know how they do it.

  21. Stacia says:

Love this show! Gus (Giancarlo Espisito ) was badass on that episode when they went to Mexico to confront the cartel and ended up poisioning them all.

And I love that crooked lawyer, Saul….”Better Call Saul”…check out his site:

  24. Kim says:

He is right. If ones family or life were threatened who knows what one would be capable of. We ALL have it inside us but thankfully most of us dont ever have to go there.

  25. Maritza says:

He is a wonderful versatile actor whether its comedy or dramatic he transforms himself in the character, that is what a really good actor does. I love Breaking Bad as much as I love Dexter.

  26. AcornPaste says:

I finally gave up on Breaking Bad with just 4 episodes left on Season 3. It was incredibly slow-paced for me. But I have to say, the script is amazing and Bryan Cranston is wonderful.

  27. JaneWonderfalls says:

I agree. Most of us can be one moment for making a bad decision and being to deep in it.
