Kristin Davis adopted a baby girl named Gemma Rose Davis

Exciting news for Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis – she just became a mom! Well, not “just”. Apparently, Kristin adopted a little girl through a domestic adoption process several months ago. Kristin named the baby girl Gemma Rose Davis. As far as I know, Kristin is not in a relationship with a man or a woman (there are rumors that she’s a lesbian, but I’ve never seen anything confirmed), so I’m assuming Kristin will be raising Gemma as a single mom. She issued a statement (and a photo, here) to People Mag:

Kristin Davis is a new mom!

The Sex and the City star, 46, welcomed daughter Gemma Rose Davis through domestic adoption a few months ago, PEOPLE has confirmed exclusively.

“This is something I have wanted for a very long time,” Davis tells PEOPLE. “Having this wish come true is even more gratifying than I ever had imagined. I feel so blessed.”

Davis, who is a global ambassador for Oxfam and a patron for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, will next be seen in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Congratulations to Kristin! I like it when celebrities fly under the radar so effectively. Kristin is never in the tabloids, even when she’s promoting something. While the Sex & the City set was, at times, consumed by a catfight between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, I never heard anything about Kristin fighting with any of her costars, on that series or any project. So… my verdict is that she’s just the kind of sweet, stable and charitable woman who should be a mom.

Kristin has always been my favorite of the SITC group. Loved the write-up and congrats to her.

  2. Samigirl says:

Charlotte (& Kristin) was always my favorite! I get so happy when people adopt here in our country, because it seems to be left out so often. Good for her and that sweet baby girl!

  3. remotecontrol says:

Love her!!! She seems so sweet and how wonderful to adopt a child!!! I wish them both a wonderful life together as a family. Btw the dog in a bowtie totally made my day!!! 🙂

  4. Angelina Stevens says:

    Congratulations!!!

  5. Robocop says:

Great news for Kristin. She has the makings of a good mom.

  6. Ell says:

Lovely to see this story here. Sounds like she’ll make a great Mum, a good example to her daughter with her charity work.

  7. MB says:

I’m pretty sure she isn’t a lesbian since those sex pics of her came out. She was definitely with a man at the time.

  8. Jayna says:

She never ages. Such pretty features and hair.

I’ve never heard rumors of her being a lesbian. She had a boyfriend in England for a while. And I remember when some exboyfriend sold photos of her completely nude about five years or more ago. They were all over the Internet. Cute figure but I know an embarrassment to her. She must have felt betrayed.

    Samigirl:
May you never be in a position to have to investigate the possibilities to “adopt here in our country”.

Sweetie, it isn’t that easy. “Our country”, in fact, makes it practically impossible for all but the wealthy, hetero, caucasion couple. Wealthy being the key word here.

  10. Rudypatudie says:

    Good for her!

She’s not gay. Probably just choosey.

She dated Alec Baldwin for gods sake. He’s about as masculine as you can get.

  11. palermo says:

I thought there was an age limit to adopt? I guess it depends where you get the baby from?

  12. tess says:

palermo, if it is a private adoption, i believe there are no age limits.

samigirl, i do not think there are any caucasian (assuming KD adopted a caucasian) infants left out or unadopted in North America. most adoptive parents WANT a baby, as young as possible. i heartily agree with you there are many older children who need loving homes, and that KD was always my fave too.

  13. jamie says:

    What a pretty name.

  14. valleymiss says:

Kristin could easily pass for 30. Crazy! She’ll be a good mommy.

  15. Turtle Dove says:

Kristen seems like a sweetie and I’m glad that she’s a mom. Congrats.

During the SATC days, I recall her being linked to several guys (Liev, Chris Noth… and someone else I believe), and I don’t think that the other gals appreciated that she was getting that press for her love life. A little jealousy of the pretty, single gal.

  16. apsutter says:

She looks fantastic and is agin beautifully!!! See what happens when you have a normal body and arent scary skinny…sjp should take notes.

  17. The Original Mia says:

Aww…so happy for her. Gemma is a cutie.

  18. Kloops says:

Lovely! She seems to be well suited to motherhood. Congratulations to the new family!

  19. Aqua says:

Congrats to her,I just love happy stories like this!best wishes to you and your little one.Enjoy her at every stage because she’ll grow up fast and before you know it you’ll be wondering where the time went.

  20. Lisa says:

I <3 Kristin. She seems to have a good perspective on life and be really mature compared to most people in show business. That’s one of the reasons I <3.

She’s talked openly about having been an alcoholic (she’s been sober for 20+ years, I believe). I bring that up *not* as a criticism. I think that her experiences with addiction and her recovery from it have probably helped give her that perspective/maturity. It’s probably one of the reasons she’s so good at dealing well with people and keeping her name out of the tabloids.

I wish her the absolute best!

    Re: Domestic v. International Adoption

I’m an attorney and I did my comprehensive paper in law school on adoption laws, so I have some knowledge about adoption.
There are 3 different types that are thrown around whenever a celeb adopts:
    1. Private Domestic (U.S.) Adoption- where the birth mother chooses the adoptive parent(s) and then gives up her parental rights- the government is not a part of this. Private Adoptions are almost always of infants, and are expensive- usually around $25,000 up to $50,000
    2. Domestic Adoption from Foster Care- where the birth parent(s) parental rights have been terminated by the government and the child is legally a ward of the state- the child is in foster care and eligible for adoption. These adoptions are relatively inexpensive (around $1000) but the children available are almost ALWAYS over the age of 3 since our laws permit birth parents at least 36 months to regain their parental rights. This is why so many older children are in the foster care system. Some people foster the infants and then are able to adopt them, so they raise the child from infancy. However, the goal of the government in these situations are “birth family reunification,” not adoption.
    3. International Adoption- this is where foreign countries have become signatories to the Hague Convention and our State Department permits U.S. citizens to adopt from these countries. The costs are similar to Private Adoption ($25-$50k). However, some potential adoptive families wait on private adoption lists for years because for whatever reason a birth mother doesn’t choose them. Some see international adoption as “easier”, since once you are matched with a child it almost always goes through- a birth mother always has the right to change her mind.

So…no path to adoption is easy. None of them are quick, without heartache, without worry, and EVERY adoption that gives a child a family and a home is worthy, regardless of what country the child was born into.

Obviously, young infants are the most desirable, and healthy Caucasian infants are the most desirable of the desirable.

For the record, Kristen Davis adopted an African-American baby.

  22. Camille says:

Aww, lovely story. Congrats to Kristin :).

It just shows that if you want something enough (example: having a baby) and you have the resources to do so, you will get what you want (side eye at Aniston).

  23. Chris says:

Why does SJP have such a high profile when her co-star Kristin is/was so much better looking?

Could someone please explain the appeal of SJP to me?

  24. Turd Fergussen says:

I don’t have kids, probably never will, but I always wanted to name my daughter Jemma if I had one. *sigh* Good choice, Kristin!

  25. the original bellaluna says:

    Congrats & God bless!

  26. LittleDeadGrrl says:

    She’s beautiful. I can’t believe she’s 46. Hope she’s happy with her new baby girl …

  27. Samigirl says:

@everyone directing adoption comments at me: I never ever said domestic adoption was easier. I said it was less common than international adoption. I myself am adopted, and my husband and I have gone through tons of classes, paperwork, etc. To become foster parents. I am fully aware of how difficult the process is, so it’s not something you need to pop off at me about. The only point I was making is that domestic adoption is less common with celebrities when compared with international.

On another thread regarding adoption, I stated that caucasion babies are the most popular…I know this. But, you do not have to be wealthy to adopt. My dad was in no way wealthy, but he still adopted me. Regardless of what you seem to think, I am well educated on the subject, as adoption is a road my husband and I will be taking one day.

  28. marybeth18 says:

@Samigirl: I certainly never intended my comment to be directed at you; it was more a response to the multiple comments I read on the People site of people making ignorant remarks about adoption. Kudos to you for choosing to adopt- I think that is great!

However, I would like to gently suggest that as far as celebrity adoptions go, I think that the split between domestic/international is pretty even. It’s just that the two most famous examples, Brangelina and Madonna, adopted internationally.

Recent(ish) domestic adoptions were done by: Kristin Davis, Mariska Hargitay, Denise Richards, Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hugh Jackman (who is Australian but adopted from the US), Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman, Sheryl Crow, Calista Flockhart, Diane Keaton, Jamie Lee Curtis & Christopher Guest, Edie Falco, Sharon Stone, Rosie O’Donnell, Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw, Kate Jackson, Nia Vardalos, Willie Garson…to name just a few.

  29. Viv says:

Good for her. I give her props for adopting an African-American baby and not going for a surrogate or foreign adoption. She seems like a really nice person.

  30. Samigirl says:

Marybeth, I certainly wasn’t directing that at you. You said nothing negative to me. And you’re correct about the most famous examples. Perhaps I should have said that the international coverage gets more attention. The only point I was trying to drive home was that I really appreciate people who do adopt domestically. There are tons and tons of children (not babies-children) here in OUR country that deserve that chance. The man who would eventually adopt me, took me in at 3…that’s why it’s so close to my heart. It’s just something I am really passionate about. I swear, I hear all the time “I want a China baby,” or “Ooh, I want a baby from Russia.” and it makes me want to scream…there are tons of beautiful children HERE that need loving, happy families.

  31. lucy2 says:

Congrats to her! I’ve always liked her, she seems sweet and genuinely nice and caring. I’m sure she and her daughter will be very happy!
If I recall, I think both Nia Vardalos and Willie Garson adopted older children through the foster system, which makes them a little extra awesome.

  32. dilettante says:

Didn’t she also date Jeff Goldblum at one point?

  33. marybeth18 says:

@lucy2 and @samigirl: You’re both right- Nia Vardalos adopted a 3 year old girl and Willie Garson adopted a 7 year old boy. I think the fact that they adopted older kids is terrific. I totally agree that there are so many children in foster care in need of homes, and it would be great if there were more positive stories about adopting older kids in the media. It’s certainly a huge need in our country!
