Katie Holmes covers the November issue of Marie Claire to promote her role in Jack and Jill (in which she plays the wife of Adam Sandler, who does double duty in drag) while wearing a red leather jacket and generally looking like she’s talking out of the side of her mouth. In other words, it’s business as usual minus the fug booties from hell and the Scientology minders; although it is not out of the realm of possiblity that both were lurking in the background.
At any rate, Holmes is being interviewed by Pankaj Mishra, the author of The Romantics (the novel that was adapted into the 2010 movie starring Holmes), in the same dubious tradition of Stephenie Meyer’s lukewarm interview of an ass kissing KStew in Glamour. Here, the roles are reversed, with Pankaj writing ridiculously flattering statements — “she looks like the quintessential movie star,” “[h]er dancer’s figure and Empire State Building legs literally stop traffic,” and “massive doe eyes, rosebud cheeks, and darling smile” — to describe Holmes’ physicality. The interview is … unfocused and strange at best, and here are a few excerpts:
On The Future: “I feel ready for the next chapter of my life. I’m excited to begin a new phase: roles I might have been afraid to play before, places I want to travel to with my daughter. I’d like to build the design business. But not too fast.”
On Working With Adam Sandler: “Adam has comedy down to a science. He knows how to find the funny — not just in himself but in everyone around him. He makes you feel comfortable and supported so that you can be your best. And he runs the takes again and again until comfort gives way to laughter.”
On Balancing Work & Family: “I’m thinking about getting rid of this,” Katie says mischievously, pointing at her cell phone. “Wouldn’t it be great to have an old-fashioned phone sheet? Go to your office, make your calls, and then continue with your day?”
“My daughter was with me the other day at a work event, and it was a long day. I took out some paper and markers that I had in my bag, and someone said to me, ‘Oh, that is so cute,’ and I looked at her and thought, No, this is not cute. This is what all mothers have to do.”
“Being around this business, my daughter is exposed to people with incredible talent, people who are the best at what they do. People I only dreamed of getting to work with as a little girl.”
[From Marie Claire]
Okay, I’ll give her that bit about paper and markers. Every mother that I personally know (including myself) will readily admit that crayolas and markers are the most portable form of kiddie entertainment in the world and also a great way to stimulate young minds. Even though she does questionable things like taking lipstick-wearing Suri out of school for New York Fashion Week, Katie really does seem to be a pretty devoted mother, and she mentions Suri several times during the interview. Oddly, Katie does not mention Tom Cruise at all. Poor unhinged, lift-wearing midget.
Now for the accompanying photoshoot, which is pretty bland and features Holmes wearing lots of heavy eye makeup and wearing “dreamy” dresses. Well, I like the parts of the green dress that are visible, but the rest is pretty meh.

I love her in the swimsuit shot. She looks classy and elegant, like a younger (but more budget) Jackie Onassis. There is something very refreshingly ladlylike about this girl.
I think she’s still stuck in Joey from Dawson’s Creek. Every time I see her in a new role I still think she’s the same character. It’s like she has no range whatsoever. Always the same.
I liked this photoshoot, when someone else dress her she’s stunning. (love her hair and makeup lately).
She’s been looking really pretty lately! Way less robotic.
I love the second to last picture, but I HATE it when people take pictures holding their hair. It’s like they’re teenagers again, modeling in their mirror. I don’t know why, it just bugs me.
Shouldn’t Suri be exposed to other kids instead?
She looks pretty in the photos, but as usual the only reason she gets magazine covers and such is because of her personal life. And yes, how interesting it’s all Suri, no Tom. Wonder if the “new chapter” includes a split? COS arranged, of course.
Many go on about Jennifer Aniston being boring and bland but to me Katie Holmes personifies bland. She has morphed into Tom Cruise’s safe and dull trophy wife when she probably has more potential than this but will we ever know what potential Katie has other than being Cruise’s wife?
Serious shopping in the full body pics-her head looks way to big. She’s pretty but essentially not interesting. All the cash, COS and paps in the world won’t turn her into an A list actress or a thinker.
I think she looks very pretty.
She has awful legs though.
I agree Auds and Sara. SHe is boring bland and you know when her name is attached to a film it won’t be any good! She sold her soul for fame and fortune and I don’t think she quite got what she had hoped for. She’s no stunning beauty but can look good if the camera angle is just right!
So beautiful, gets better and better as she matures – shame about the chip.
she always looks like she suffered a stroke on 1 side of her face, always seems lopsided 2 me
If she hadn’t married Tom, we would would never hear about her. And empire state legs? Her legs are not her best feature at all lol.
She talks such pretentious shite.
she is honestly one of the most BORING looking ‘celeb’ *YAWN
I do think she is very beautiful, if uninteresting.
“Empire State Building legs” is not necessarily a compliment 😉
Alright, I know this is incredibly mean and I deserve to be ripped up for even writing this, but…I CANNOT stand her crooked mouth. That smirk drives me nuts! Pull up both sides of your mouth at the same time for crying out loud!
Sorry.
It must be TC’s mega-$$$ that keeps Katie in our faces all the time. Girl can’t act, dance, sing or design *fashion* and she’s still getting magazine covers. so.over.her.already.
suri this, suri that, traveling with my daughter…. no amazing husband? weird
“[h]er dancer’s figure and Empire State Building legs literally stop traffic,”
Um… no. I try not to rip on anyone for the way they are built (what they do with what they are given is a whole ‘nother story!) but seriously? She has MUCH better features than her legs… like all of them.
And I hate that damn smirk thing too. That is why I hated Joey Potter so much, that effing smirk. UGH
I long for the day when they stop overselling this wet noodle as a high fashion model/designer/actress. i’m even embarrassed for her. it’s embarrassing to see how she gets trotted out for various things – or trots herself out and seems to believe all the hype – and the rality is just…meh. that’s hollywood. it totally lobotomizes people.
it’s the try-hard or try-so-hard that’s annoying. like the kid at high school who just never lets up to be the popular one. it’s like, enough already. just chill.
and that red jacket looks cheap.
For some reason, she’s looking very Jolie in this spread. Who is their plastic surgeon?!?
Obviously, I’m not a novelist of Hollywood, or anything, really. But, the way that this author uses the word ‘literally’ might help explain my almost total lack of knowledge of her body of work. I wish I had a Katie Holmes smirk app, or something.
I really like the picture of her in the water. Not an angle or facial expression we get to see, regularly. Who knew that scowling with eyes cast downward with so little clothing or hair intervention to gum up the proceedings would be so becoming? I hope it’s not from practice.
