How will a McCain election affect pop music trends?

While it might seem silly to try and predict pop music tastes based on who is president, trends over the last thirty years show a pattern of what kinds of music become popular based on which party controls the white house. Based on these trends, let’s first see how a McCain presidency might influence pop music.

Heavy rock music with a dark, emotional subtext usually does better during Republican presidencies. Going back to the Nixon years, trends have shown that heavy, theatrical rock music does well when a Republican is in the White House. Heavy metal pioneers, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Alice Cooper first became popular during GOP administrations in the early 70’s. Critics attribute this first rise of heavy metal as a reaction to the hippy music of the 60’s, as well as a commentary on the conservative political climate.

The Reagan years saw a re-emergence of heavy metal. Bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, and Twisted Sister became hugely popular during Reagan’s time in the oval office. Big hair, makeup, flashy costumes, loud guitar solos, and wild stage shows became the mainstream at the same time Nancy Reagan was telling the youth of America to “just say no to drugs.” So oddly, metal fans and Republicans alike look back fondly to the eighties as a kind of golden age- but for entirely different reasons.

Similarly, the presidency of George W. Bush has coincided with a new-found popularity of an emerging type of theatrical heavy music. Emo bands like Aiden, Fallout Boy, Taking Back Sunday, and Hawthorne Heights combined heavy rock sounds, emotionally deep lyrics, and a new sense of fashion to create a musical trend that achieved huge popularity in the new century.

Given these trends, a McCain presidency would likely bring about a re-emergence of heavy rock rooted in both the emo and heavy metal. This new style would likely feature a dark, androgynous fashion sense, a combo of the emo-goth style and the glam rock style of the 80’s hair metal bands. The music would re-focus on the guitar mastery of earlier heavy bands like Van Halen. Lyric content would likely steer away from the emotional introspection of Emo and back to fantasy-inspired topics like the band Iron Maiden uses. So if McCain is the victor on November 5th, pull the hairspray and leather jacket out of the closet and get ready to ROCK!

That’s it, after reading both articles, I’m convinced. I’m changing my vote for the sake of music.

God, yes, KDRockstar! I just voted for Obama this morning. Had I voted the other way, I’d have had to go to the Supervisor of Elections office and demand they give back my ballot. I had a young teen male in my house during the heavy metal heyday and I cannot live through that again.

And didn’t the heyday of Southern rock occur during the Nixon/Ford administrations?

PLAY SOME FREEBIRD. *holds Zippo over head*

    Edit: ZOMG FREEBIRD.

I’d said this on the other thread before I realised this one was here:

So, if McCain wins, are we going to see a resurgence Prog Rock similar to the early 70s under Ford or metal/hard rock like the 80s under Regan? 😉

Oh yeah, I’m afraid we would be back to the era of the 16 minute epic sound experiment. In a simpler time when Phil Collins knew his place was behind the drumkit. 😈

are you sure that a mccain presidency wouldn’t see a huge abba revival? with an abba reality show, and a weekly t.v. series about fernando (from an abba song for you who are unfamiliar with their music), abba marathons on all radio stations, “all abba all the time”. and mamma mia playing in a continuous loop on all movie channels. and finally, john and cindy twisting on the white house lawn to abba melodies. (how can anyone, with all the music in the world, choose abba as the best of the best? that alone says the poor old guy should just retire back to arizona and drink ice tea in a hammock.)

*Grabbing both sides of head and shrieking at Kaiser to SHHHH!*

I live in Lynnrd Skynnrd’s hometown (is the name spelled right? I can never remember) and it’s about the town’s only claim to fame since our football team SUCKS and our other musical hometown heroes, Molly Hatchet, Gary U.S. Bonds and Limp Bizkit, have all fallen by the wayside. You can’t go anywhere without hearing that song, or “Gimme Three Steps”.

I do like “Freebird” though. It’s the only song I ever had with a man. That makes no sense. Try again. The only time any man and I ever had an “our song”, it was Freebird. Which is sort of sad, if you think about it.

  7. Kaiser says:

@Syko – And this bird will never chay-ay-ay-ange….

I love ZOMG FREEBIRD. But my favorite Skynyrd is “Simple Man” – that song truly makes me cry.

I’m not convinced. The last couple of years, druing Bush I and II, the idea of musical quality took a nosedive I could never have imagined. All these generic blonde female singers, for example. The almost-anorectic-oh-so-sensitive-yet-such-a-douchebag type of singer/songwriter in the male department.
And, please, who would confuse these Emo mama’s boys with real hardrockers/heavy metal bands? Try again.

Going to see AC/DC next month in Columbus 😀

  10. vdantev says:

All the music will be in German singing the praises of Fuhrer and fatherland?

  11. Syko says:

Let’s face it, Sauvage, in the years of Bush I and Bush II, the quality of life as we knew it took a nosedive, and I don’t think we can blame it on a bunch of guys crashing airplanes into office buildings.

  12. sauvage says:

I am SO with you on that one, Syko!

    toby keith.

    ZOMG FREEBIRD!

What is frightening is that some people could take me seriously. It seems like people are looking for reasons to choose – aka the hockey moms going with Palin.

    Oh, and *love* “Simple Man.”
